I have another question: do you draft for Brooklyn for the Rule 5 draft as well?

1983 League Championship Results

American League Championship Series

Baltimore (105-57) sweeps Chicago (A) (86-76) in 4 games

Baltimore continues their regular season dominance with a 4 game trouncing of the White Sox. Gary Ryerson sets the tone with two more phenomenal ALCS outings. He is getting quite a reputation as a go-to guy in the postseason.

National League Championship Series

Cleveland (N) (103-59) knocks off Chicago (N) (91-71) in 6 games

Fans in the Windy City will be drowning their sorrows in the bleachers during the World Series. Led by their $22 Million man,Harry Krause, the Spiders put the highest payroll in the majors to good use as they walked all over the Orphans in their quest to unseat the Terps.

Before I post the World Series, I just wanted to note the performance of a journeyman that I found amusing:

Karl "Tuffy" Rhodes, LF, St. Louis Cardinals - 36 years old
.311, 39 HR, 122 RBI

Remember him?

1983 WORLD SERIES PREVIEW

BALTIMORE TERRAPINS (105-57) - Unlike the previous two year, this Terrapin squad also has a solid offense, ranked 1st in Team Batting Average in the majors. Darryl Strawberry (.266, 44 HR, 109 RBI, .375 OBP) is still their top power threat, while Mike Tiernan (.298, 12 HR, 90 RBI, 58 SB) and George Stone (.338, 64 RBI, 52 SB) set the table. On the mound, Gary Ryerson (19-5, 2.22 ERA, 196 K), always explosive in the postseason, translated his success in the regular season. Hal Reniff (5-6, 3.16 ERA, 52 Saves) emerged as the top closer in the American League. If he enters the game, it's lights out.

CLEVELAND SPIDERS(103-59) - The Spiders boast the highest payroll in the majors, and possibly the best player in the game in Larry Doyle (.358, 32 HR, 120 RBI, 45 SB), "The Pride of Cleveland". Other Spiders' stars include leadoff Duffy Lewis (.324, 15 HR, 98 RBI, 50 SB), Jason Giambi (.277, 25 HR, 115 RBI), and veteran Darrell Evans (.270, 34 HR, 104 RBI). The Spiders also have their counterpart to Ryerson in the $22,000,000 man, Harry Krause (22-3, 2.21 ERA, 270 K), plus two guys who could be #1 starters on most any other team in Ramon Garcia (16-5, 2.46 ERA, 152 K) and Stan Wall (18-7, 3.05 ERA, 98 K).

PREDICTION - This will a tight one, but I have a hunch that Cleveland's depth in the rotation will help them prevail. Spiders in 7.

1983 WORLD SERIES RESULTS

Game 1 Cleveland (N) 1 - Baltimore 3

Jumbo McGinnis and Ramon Garcia treat the fans to a pitching clinic in game 1. Garcia's only mistake, consecutive hits allowed to Darryl Strawberry, Mike Tiernan, and George Sisler in the 4th inning, lets 2 runs in and costs him the game..

Game 2 Cleveland (N) 12 - Baltimore 0

Stan Wall handcuffs Baltimore, and the Spiders scatter 16 hits, including 7 doubles, to blow past the Terps in Game 2, tying the Series a one game apiece.

Game 3 Baltimore 4 - Cleveland (N) 3

Gary ryerson pitches 8 innings of 4 hit ball, but it takes a mental lapse from reliever Vida Blue to win the game as Orlando Cabrera rips a hanging curve over the rightfield fence, putting the Terps ahead for good.

Game 4 Baltimore 1 - Cleveland (N) 3

In a reversal of Game 1, Ramon Garcia triumphs over Jumbo McGinnis by the same score. Jason Giambi's 3-run clout in the 5th is all it takes to tie the series at 2.

Game 5 Baltimore 5 - Cleveland (N) 4

The Terrapins appeared dead in the water through 8 innings, but everything changed in the top of the 9th when Cleveland sent in 40 year-old closer George Jeffcoat to close out a 3-0 lead that Stan Wall had spotted him. Six batters later, Jeffcoat had given up doubles to Bill Madlock, Mike Tiernan and Orlando Cabrera, Baltimore had scored 5 runs and there were still none out. Cleveland rallied in the bottom half of the inning, but it wasn't enough.

Game 6 Cleveland (N) 9 - Baltimore 12

Back in Baltimore, both teams came in gunning for a win, and the Terrapins almost let it slip away with 5 errors. Gary Ryerson pitched another solid game, and the bullpen didn't implode too badly in the 9th, allowing 4 runs, but hanging on for the win as Baltimore repeats for their 3rd crown in 4 years.

1983 CHAMPIONS - BALTIMORE TERRAPINS

Before I post the free agency results, note a couple of details......

I gave each expansion team $50M in their bank in order to compete. When in recent history has there ever been an expansion without a nice big bankroll?

I also gave each expansion $37.5M in Broadcast Revenue....slightly lower than the league average.
As a result, the competition for players was intense, and salary records were OBLITERATED, including the largest salary I have ever seen in OOTP......as you will see.
