McNally was effective for Chicago, seldom allowing the Yankees to square up a pitch. The left-hander tossed 114 pitches over 9 innings. He limited New York to just 1 run on 5 hits.
"It's a gut punch," Yankees manager Wally Millies said, "to get here and find ourselves down 0-2 in the blink of an eye."
Game 3 is scheduled for Wednesday at Yankee Stadium in New York.

The Chicago White Sox appear poised to make a serious run at the World Series after a convincing sweep over the New York Yankees in the League Championship Series.

"Everyone's doing their part and things are falling into place," said Chicago first baseman Jim Spencer, who was named series MVP. "It feels like a special year."
For the series, Spencer hit .400 with a .500 on-base percentage. He had 1 home runs, drove in 4 RBI and scored 2 runs.
The Chicago White Sox will play against the Philadelphia Phillies in the next round. Philadelphia won their series against the Houston Astros 3 games to 0. The World Series schedule will be announced after the League Championship Series finishes.

Phillies Surge Past Astros to Take 1-0 Series Lead
The Philadelphia Phillies powered past the visiting Houston Astros, 5-4, in the opener of the League Championship Series at Connie Mack Stadium. Philadelphia right fielder Billy Williams was 3 for 5 with a double and 2 singles, while adding 3 RBIs, to lead the charge. The Phillies now lead the series 1-0.
The game was decided with two out in the bottom of the ninth. With Philadelphia trailing 4-3, Williams hit a fastball from Danny Frisella for a 2-run double. In the blink of an eye, the Phillies had a walk-off win.
"We're one game closer to our goal," Philadelphia manager Dutch Fehring said later. "It isn't any more complicated than that."
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Connie Mack Stadium in Philadelphia.
Phillies lead series 1-0

Game 2, October 5th, 1969, Connie Mack Stadium
Phillies Escape Astros in 10, Now Lead Series 2-0
The Philadelphia Phillies went into extra innings against the Houston Astros but ultimately moved to within one game of the World Series. The Phillies downed the Astros in a 10-inning walk-off at Connie Mack Stadium by a final score of 6-5. Philadelphia left-hander Sandy Koufax had a commendable performance. He threw 8.0 innings of 5-hit ball. The win gives the Phillies a 2-0 advantage in the best-of-5 League Championship Series.
The clutch hit was provided by Bobby Murcer. He delivered a walk-off run-scoring single off Lou Marone in the bottom of the tenth.
"We're happy," Koufax told reporters after the win. "When you're in the playoffs, you've got to treat every game like it could be your last."
Game 3 is scheduled for Tuesday at the Astrodome in Houston.
Phillies lead series 2-0

Game 3, October 7th, 1969, the Astrodome
Philadelphia Sweeps into the World Series
The Philadelphia Phillies have swept the Houston Astros and are on to the World Series. Philadelphia won 11-2 today at Astrodome to clinch the League Championship Series.
"We're happy to have put the dagger in when we had the chance," said Philadelphia right-fielder Billy Williams, who was named MVP for the series. "It could have been a tough series to finish if we let them start winning."
Williams won the award with a .600 batting average and a .600 on-base percentage. He had 0 home runs, drove in 6 RBIs and scored 2 runs.
The Philadelphia Phillies don't know who they will face in the next round. They will play the winner of the New York Yankees-Chicago White Sox series. Chicago leads the series 2 games to 0. The World Series schedule will be announced after the League Championship Series finishes.

NLCS MVP: RF Billy Williams (Philadelphia Phillies)

1969 World Series: Chicago White Sox vs. Philadelphia Phillies

Results

Game 1, October 10th, 1969, Connie Mack Stadium
World Series Game 1 Victory for Koufax and Philadelphia
The Philadelphia Phillies started the World Series in style, downing the visiting Chicago White Sox at Connie Mack Stadium by a score of 7-2 to stake an early 1-0 lead in the best-of-7 series. Phillies left-hander Sandy Koufax threw 6.0 innings of shutout ball.
Koufax allowed no runs on 2 hits over 6 innings for the Phillies. He walked 2 and struck out 5.
"There's nothing like the postseason," said Koufax, "to ramp up the pressure."
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Connie Mack Stadium in Philadelphia.
Phillies lead series 1-0

Game 2, October 11th, 1969, Connie Mack Stadium
Phillies Hammered by Harper, Drop Game 2 to White Sox
Chicago second baseman Tommy Harper was the difference-maker for the White Sox in what turned into a shootout with the Philadelphia Phillies. Harper earned accolades after going 3-for-4 in the 4-1 White Sox win. With the victory, the White Sox moved into a 1-1 tie in the best-of-7 series.
Bobby Tolan drew 1 walk against the Phillies. With the game tied in the top of the eighth inning, he hit a sacrifice fly that put Chicago in front, 2-1.
Phillies manager Dutch Fehring did not take questions after the game, telling assembled reporters that he would hold a press conference "if and when we win the World Series."
The next game is set to be played on October 13th, 1969 at Comiskey Park in Chicago.
Series tied 1-1

Game 3, October 13th, 1969, Comiskey Park
Road Win Lifts Philadelphia to 2-1 Lead in WS
With right-hander Pat Jarvis leading the charge, the Philadelphia Phillies got past the Chicago White Sox, 3-1, in extra innings in Game 3 of the World Series. Jarvis threw 6.0 innings of 1-hit ball at Comiskey Park as Philadelphia managed to grab a 2-1 lead in the best-of-7 series.
Philadelphia used the timely hitting of Ed Kirkpatrick to seize the win. The center fielder stroked a run-scoring single in the top of the 12th inning to put the Phillies on top, 2-1. It was his only hit in 5 at-bats, but it was a game-changer.
"We're feeling good about this," said Phillies manager Dutch Fehring. "We have got an advantage now and we just need to keep the pressure on."
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Comiskey Park in Chicago.
Phillies lead series 2-1

Game 4, October 14th, 1969, Comiskey Park
Almost There: Philadelphia On Cusp of World Series Triumph After 2-0 Win
Jim Merritt pitched a gem to help the Philadelphia Phillies escape with a tight, 2-0 victory over the Chicago White Sox in a low-scoring World Series contest. The left-handed Merritt threw 9.0 innings of shutout ball in the win, just enough for the Phillies on a day when their offense dried up. Philadelphia now leads the best-of-7 series 3-1.
Merritt excelled for Philadelphia, as he kept the Chicago offense quiet. The left-hander went the distance, shutting out the White Sox on 3 hits.
"We lost," Chicago manager Fred Koster said later. "We'll deal with it. The series isn't over."
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Comiskey Park in Chicago.
Phillies lead series 3-1

Game 5, October 15th, 1969, Comiskey Park
It's Over! Philadelphia Defeats Chicago
With a 9-5 win over the Chicago White Sox tonight at Comiskey Park, the Philadelphia Phillies wrapped up their 3rd title in team history.
Philadelphia left little doubt who was the better club. "Team" was the word of the day as the Phillies celebrated the culmination of their banner year in the victors clubhouse following the game.
"Hitting, pitching, fielding; those are all things you need to win, but most importantly you need a team, a team that works together toward the same collective goal," said Philadelphia manager Dutch Fehring. "Our players felt that way all year and they played that way. When one guy had an off day, 24 others stepped up their game and filled the void."
A jovial mood filled the air as Philadelphia celebrated into the night. The city's mayor said parade plans were underway and a "huge celebration" in the works.
"We're going to celebrate our team, our championship Philadelphia Phillies," the mayor said.
The champions completed the regular season with a first-place finish in the NL East Division and a 114-48 record.

World Series MVP: RF Billy Williams (Philadelphia Phillies)

(In this TL, the 1969 Phillies will definitely be seen as one of the best teams in baseball history (there is no other way to describe a team that went 114-48 and swept the NLCS (against a 100-game winner Astros), and only lost one World Series game (against the 100-game winner White Sox)--and they now have more World Series championships in this sim than they do IRL (3 as opposed to 2).)

1970 All-Star Game results

July 14th, 1970, Busch Stadium, St. Louis

AL Defeats NL, 7-4
There's a whole lot of pride on the line when the best baseball players throughout Major League Baseball gather for the all-star game.
It was no different this year, as the AL bested the NL by a score of 7-4, in a spirited contest played at Busch Stadium.
"It might be a little lower intensity than the regular season or playoffs, but everyone in that clubhouse still wants to win this game," said Roy White of the AL, who was named the game MVP.

All-Star Game MVP: LF Roy White (Detroit Tigers)

American League Championship Series: New York Yankees vs. Chicago White Sox

Results

Game 1, October 3rd, 1970, Comiskey Park
White Sox Surge Past Yankees to Take 1-0 Series Lead
The Chicago White Sox took the first game of the League Championship Series in dramatic fashion, topping the New York Yankees with a ninth-inning walk-off, 3-2 victory. Yankees pitcher Joe Coleman had a productive, if futile, game. He threw 6.0 innings of 3-hit ball.
The White Sox were down to their final out when right-fielder Bobby Tolan turned a 1-0 curveball from Lindy McDaniel into a 2-run single. The walk-off single made the Comiskey Park crowd go wild.
"It's true for every sport, I think, but the playoffs are so short that you've just got to get in and get hot," Chicago manager Fred Koster told BNN after the win. "We took care of the first part and now we're just working on the second."
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Comiskey Park in Chicago.
White Sox lead series 1-0

Game 2, October 4th, 1970, Comiskey Park
Yankees Hammered by Campaneris, Fall Further Behind in CS
The Chicago White Sox moved to within one game of the World Series, downing the visiting New York Yankees at Comiskey Park by a score of 8-4. White Sox shortstop Bert Campaneris did some major damage. He was 2-5 with a home run and a double, while adding 4 RBIs and scoring once. The win gives the White Sox a 2-0 advantage in the best-of-5 League Championship Series.
A key moment came with one out in the bottom of the fifth. That's when Campaneris hit a changeup from Jim Bunning for a 3-run home run, putting Chicago up, 6-1.
"Things aren't going great right now," New York manager Wally Millies said. "But you don't need me to tell you that."
Game 3 is scheduled for Tuesday at Yankee Stadium in New York.
White Sox lead series 2-0

Game 3, October 6th, 1970, Yankee Stadium
White Sox Advance to World Series
The Chicago White Sox rode the strong arm of Dave McNally to earn a sweep of the New York Yankees in the League Championship Series.
Chicago won the final game at Yankee Stadium by a 3-0 count and the series 3-0. McNally was instrumental in the series win and was named MVP.
"Hopefully, we can do it all again in the World Series," he said.
For the series, McNally had a 0.00 ERA over 9 innings pitched, with a 1-0 record.
The Chicago White Sox don't know who they will face in the next round. They will play the winner of the Houston Astros-Philadelphia Phillies series. That series is tied at 1 game each. The World Series schedule will be announced after the League Championship Series finishes.

Seaver Handcuffs Phillies, Astros Seize 1-0 Advantage in CS
The League Championship Series got off to a quiet start, with the traveling Houston Astros taking a low-scoring, 2-1 win over the host Philadelphia Phillies. Houston right-hander Tom Seaver was marvelous at Connie Mack Stadium. The Astros now hold a 1-0 lead in the best-of-5 series.
In his 141-pitch effort, Seaver allowed 1 run on 5 hits over 9 innings. He walked 5 and struck out 11.
"Things broke our way today and that's great," Astros manager Frank Colman said. "It's important, though, to stay focused and not pat yourself on the back too much. We aren't done yet."

The clutch at-bat came in the bottom of the ninth inning, when Philadelphia right fielder Billy Williams, facing Lou Marone, had a run-scoring sacrifice fly. It gave the Phillies the 2-1 win.
Astros manager Frank Colman did not take questions after the game, telling assembled reporters that he would hold a press conference "if and when we win the World Series."
Game 3 is scheduled for Wednesday at the Astrodome in Houston.

The standout offensive performance from Williams included a .333 batting average, .450 on-base percentage, 1 home runs, 5 RBIs and 3 runs scored.
The Philadelphia Phillies will play against the Chicago White Sox in the World Series. Chicago won their series against the New York Yankees 3 games to 0. The World Series schedule will be announced after the League Championship Series finishes.

1970 World Series: Chicago White Sox vs. Philadelphia Phillies

Results

Game 1, October 10th, 1970, Comiskey Park
White Sox Rally Past Phillies to Claim 1-0 Series Lead
The Chicago White Sox took the first game of the World Series in dramatic fashion, topping the Philadelphia Phillies in a ninth-inning, walk-off, 6-5 win. Phillies left-hander Sandy Koufax was impressive in the loss. He threw 8.0 innings of 5-hit ball.
In the bottom of the ninth, with two out and the game tied, 5-5, 23-year-old first baseman Jim Spencer won it for Chicago. With the bases loaded, Spencer hit a 0-2 slider from Joe Grzenda for a run-scoring single, giving his team the 6-5 win.
"Every team in baseball loses," Phillies manager Dutch Fehring said. "We're in the playoffs and we still have the same guys that got us here. We'll bounce back."
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Comiskey Park in Chicago.
White Sox lead series 1-0

Game 2, October 11th, 1970, Comiskey Park
Phillies Clip White Sox, 4-3, in WS Contest
The Philadelphia Phillies went the distance and then some at Comiskey Park to drag themselves back into a tie with the Chicago White Sox.
It took 12 innings to settle Game 2 of the World Series, but Philadelphia eventually took the 4-3 win behind the efforts of pitcher Mike Cuellar. Cuellar threw 6.2 innings of 2-hit ball to aid the Philadelphia cause. The clubs are now tied 1-1 in their best-of-7 series.
Philadelphia relied on the hitting of Billy Williams to pick up the win. The right fielder ripped a run-scoring single in the top of the 12th inning to put the Phillies on top, 4-3. For the game, Williams had 1 triple and 1 single in 5 at-bats.
"I hate extra innings," Philadelphia manager Dutch Fehring said. "It makes everyone more tired, wears out the bullpen, wears out the fans. Even winning doesn't make me feel good about it."
Game 3 is scheduled for Tuesday at Connie Mack Stadium in Philadelphia.
Series tied 1-1

Game 3, October 13th, 1970, Connie Mack Stadium
White Sox Hammered by Williams, Drop Game 3 to Phillies
When the games really matter, the Philadelphia Phillies put on their best show, beating the Chicago White Sox by a final score of 9-7. Billy Williams was 3-5 with a home run, 2 singles, and a walk, while scoring 2 and driving in 2. Philadelphia now leads Chicago 2-1 in the best-of-7 affair.
Williams won the game for Philadelphia when he homered off Eddie Watt in the bottom of the tenth.
"Postseason wins taste oh so sweet," said Williams after the game.
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Connie Mack Stadium in Philadelphia.
Phillies lead series 2-1

Game 4, October 14th, 1970, Connie Mack Stadium
Chicago Win Evens Series at 2
Trailing by a game in the World Series, Jack Billingham was ready for his start.
The right-hander turned in a performance for the ages at Connie Mack Stadium, pitching a 9-inning, complete-game shutout to lead the Chicago White Sox to victory in Game 4 of the World Series. Billingham held the Philadelphia Phillies to 4 hits and 2 walks, while striking out 4. The win brought Chicago into a 2-2 tie in the best-of-7 series.
Billingham was sensational for Chicago. The right-hander went the distance, shutting out the Phillies on 4 hits.
"We're happy," Billingham told reporters after the win. "When you're in the playoffs, you've got to treat every game like it could be your last."
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Connie Mack Stadium in Philadelphia.
Series tied 2-2

Game 5, October 15th, 1970, Connie Mack Stadium
Road Win Lifts Chicago to 3-2 Lead in WS
Don Wilson saved his best stuff for the biggest stage of them all.
In Game 5 of the World Series, the Chicago White Sox left-hander pitched a beauty, leading his club past the Philadelphia Phillies, 3-2. Wilson threw 8.1 innings of 4-hit ball in the win at Connie Mack Stadium. With it, Chicago takes a 3-2 lead in the best-of-7 series.
Chicago used a clutch at-bat from Lou Brock to capture the win. The left fielder hammered a 2-run home run in the top of the third inning to put the White Sox ahead, 3-2. It was his lone hit in 3 at-bats, but it was a humdinger.
"It was a good day, but I'm not letting my guard down," Brock said. "I'll let my guard down as soon as someone puts a big, fat championship ring on my finger."
The next game is set to be played on October 17th, 1970 at Comiskey Park in Chicago.

The Philadelphia Phillies and the Chicago White Sox will take the World Series to a decisive 7th game. In a must-win situation, the Phillies beat the White Sox, 11-9, at Comiskey Park to force the series into what will essentially be a one-game playoff. Philadelphia catcher Johnny Bench went 2-3 with 2 home runs and 2 walks, while adding 5 RBIs and scoring twice.
The game turned with one out in the top of the fifth when Bench hit a 3-run home run. It thrust the Phillies into the lead, 5-4.
"We're one game closer to our goal," Philadelphia manager Dutch Fehring said later. "It isn't any more complicated than that."
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Comiskey Park in Chicago.

Game 7, October 18th, 1970, Comiskey Park
Phillies Win 1970 World Series
The Philadelphia Phillies pulled out all the stops tonight, winning the World Series in a hard-fought series with the Chicago White Sox.
It was a seesaw affair, but with a 9-1 victory at Comiskey Park, Philadelphia lay claim to the franchise's 4th championship.
"There's no denying we faced a tough opponent," said Billy Williams. "But as the old saying goes, 'when the going gets tough, the tough get going,' and that's what we did today."
The champs finished the regular season 109-53 and claimed first place in the NL East Division.
A victory parade is set to be scheduled in Philadelphia in the days to come.
