Game 50: St. Louis Browns vs. Boston Americans

A dominate pitching performance by rookie Johnny Lush combined with an offense that put the ball in play led to an easy 12 to 0 victory for the Boston Americans (27-23) over the visiting St. Louis Browns (27-23). The win moves the Americans back into a tie for the AL lead.

While he has had his struggles this season, Johnny Lush (7-6) was locked in today, as he allowed just 3 hits and 1 walk in his 95-pitch complete game shutout; Game Score 84. Andy Coakley (6-7) was knocked from the game after just 5 1/3 innings of play in which he allowed 9 runs (8 earned) on 9 hits and 3 walks; Game Score 16. Jesse Stovall covered the final 2 2/3 innings of play in which he permitted 3 runs (0 earned) on 5 hits.

Boston's offense was in full support of Lush today, as the Americans pounded out 14 hits (6 for extra bases). Leading the way were Solly Hofman (3 for 5, 2 Doubles, Run, RBI), Bill Lange (2 for 5, 2 Doubles, Run, 3 RBIs), Frank Chance (2 for 4, Run, RBI, Walk, 2 Stolen Bases), and Kid Elberfed (2 for 4, Double, 3 Runs, RBI, Walk). The Browns offense fizzled, as it eked out just 3 harmless singles on the day.

Game 51: Chicago White Sox vs. Boston Americans

A tough loss for the home team, as they fell behind early and simply could not muster any runs. In falling to the Chicago White Sox (23-28) by a 2 to 0 score, the Boston Americans (27-24) now sit in a 3-way tie for the American League lead with the Detroit Tigers and the St. Louis Browns.

Bill Carrick (8-5) was locked in today, as he twirled a 5-hit shutout in which he allowed 1 walk in his 104-pitch effort; Game Score 77. While Jesse Tannehill (5-7) was tagged with the loss, he limited the damage to 2 earned runs on 9 hits and 1 walk; Game Score 63.

Chicago's offense was generated by Lew Ritter (2 for 4, RBI, Stolen Base), John Dobbs (2 for 5, Run, Stolen Base), and Harry Bay (1 for 4, Triple, Run, RBI, Stolen Base). Aside from Bill Lange (1 for 4, Double), the Boston offense was nothing more than harmless singles.

Game 52: Chicago White Sox vs. Boston Americans

What an exciting, dramatic game as the Boston Americans (28-24) used a 9th inning double from Jesse Hoffmeister to get the walk-off win over the visiting Chicago White Sox (23-29) by a 1 to 0 score.

This was a battle between two dominant pitching performances. In the end, Sam Leever (7-5) picked up the victory by limiting the opposition to just 5 hits in the 104-pitch shutout win; Game Score 80. Take the loss was Bill Phillips (6-7) after he allowed 1 earned run on 4 hits and 1 walk; Game Score 73.

Despite limited offense today, Jesse Hoffmeister's pinch-hit effort (1 for 1, Double, RBI) is noteworthy. For the White Sox, Duke Farrell (3 for 3) played well.

Mike Grady (1 for 4, Double) and Claude Rossman (1 for 1, Double) provided the only spark on the day for the White Sox.

Career Pitching Leaders - K/BB

Now that I have nearly 4 season into this league, thought I would share the career pitching leaders in K/BB ration. It should be no surprise that Rube Waddell is the career leaders with a 4.2 K/BB ratio, as the big lefty has led the American league in K's in each of the first 3 full and is on pace to lead the league in K's again this season.
