Yes, I was just coming here to comment on this. Does this even sound like the guy who pitched for you?

Williams, an All-Star closer acquired from Milwaukee during the offseason, has a 9.00 ERA and has allowed runs in four of nine appearances. He has walked seven in eight innings.

He imploded tonight for four runs in the ninth allowing the Rays to tie the game, and then go ahead and win in the 10th.

I figure one of two things:

1) This is NOT the real Devin Williams. Your ballclub had somebody else undergo facial surgery to resemble him and play the free agent, for chump change, while Williams is hidden someplace and taking down a salary from the Brewers and the Yankees. Maybe he is actually on your squad at this moment, disguised as someone else!

2) Or, more logically and probable, look for an announcement soon that this Williams is going on the disabled list with a lingering injury that he suffered before spring training and has been bothering him ever since. The Yankees may do this even if he's not injured, to save face. Talk about a foul up, this is shaping up to be one lollapalooza.

This is a bit weird. The Yankees are playing a regular season game in their spring training ballpark.

Now would be a good time to leave certain players there, demoted, who thus far are stinking up the place! Saves travel expenses, don't you know.

New York Yankees left-hander Max Fried lost a no-hit bid in Sunday's 4-0 win over the Tampa Bay Rays just as the bottom of the eighth inning was about to start when the official scorer changed a sixth-inning call to a hit after originally calling it an error.

How that was scored a hit is one of these:

But the Yankees would have "yankeed" Fried anyway as soon as he hit a certain pitch count. Up-front Boonie, calling on his phone from somewhere below the seats (he was tossed for the 40th time in his career): "Hey, my tablet says no more than 102 pitches. I don't care if it's a perfect game!"

I can see why the umps got bamboozled. First of all,

Steinbrenner Field’s poles are 30 feet tall, the minimum for a Major League stadium, and appropriate for the venue considering there is only one seating deck. As a point of comparison, the foul poles at Yankee Stadium are 90 feet tall.

But second of all, Judge hit the ball so hard and so far, that you can hardly see it in the replays. Forget about the first replay in this video, which they run twice; the cameraman was also fooled and didn't focus on the right spot. Go full screen and look at the next replay after that; at about 0:48 you see a quick flash of white against the trees. That's the ball coming down out there, and it was fair.

If Judge ends up with 761 home runs, I will remember this one.

I'm not saying you're right, I'm not saying you're wrong. But that thing is monstrous and the camera angle shows the foul line cutting in the direction of the ball, and ... I don't know.

That foul pole was not built with Judge in mind, clearly. It's like trying to measure your daily commute with a 12-inch ruler.....

He's like a deer in headlights. You can see it in his face while he's pitching.

This is going to be another one of those stories in which a player was blinded by the glare of New York and, perhaps, moves on to a team like the Twins (no offense to them) and once again excels. We have seen it before.

That, or like I said earlier, look for the announcement of a previously undetected injury.

He has already been demoted after last night's debacle. Take a look at his stats:

As of this moment, the man is batting .410 (it's almost May!) and has 8 home runs and 27 RBIs (it's still only April!).

I foresee a reverse trend in coming years. While right now there are no more single-digit uniform numbers left for Yankee players, we will begin seeing the numbers on the other end being retired, starting with #99.

The Yankees have not had a 20-game winner in over 20 years. Can Max Fried do it? With Aaron Boone as a manager, compiled game scripts in hand, I doubt it. Plus, Fried won 17 games back in 2019 but never more than 14 since then.

But he is now 6-0 and his ERA is 1.01 so this is shaping up to be a career year for him. Health? Keep fingers crossed.

It's funny how this is — and I don't want to make a thing out of the "New York mystique or whatever — but Devin Williams comes to town and "craps the bed" to use low's crude but effective phrase.

Max Fried arrives in New York and can do no wrong. How to account for this? I would think the Yankees rated each as top-notch in their respective roles when they signed them. One soars north and the other dives south.

I just watched a replay of yesterday's triple by Judge. As the opposing 3B, you have to hope the play isn't close because it must be like trying to tag a freight train coming at you.

Those of you who have noticed my insouciant tone in the Braves and Pirates thread, take note: The Yankees (currently) stink.

Aaron and Goldschmidt, with a sprinkling of Grisham, are the only guys hitting. Rice shows signs but he's not there yet. The rest of the lineup sux, from mediocre (Volpe and Cabrera) to the atrocious (Chisolm, Escarra, Dominguez, Peraza, and Reyes).

I left out Bellinger on purpose. Is it too soon to call him the second big off-season mistake, after deer-eyes Williams? (Practically as I typed that, Bellinger hit a 2-run homer, bringing him just above the Mendoza line. Now he will go 0 for 10.)

On the mound, you have Fried and maybe Rodon. The rest of the starters either stink or are hurt or both. The bullpen isn't too bad if you leave Williams out of the bunch but there are some unfamiliar dudes down there.

All in all, this is not looking good.

I actually had forgotten that DJ LeMahieu was on the team but I see that the Yankees are planning to activate him today. Good timing, I suppose, with the injury to Oswaldo Cabrera. He can't do much worse than the other remaining guys they have to play 2B and 3B.
