Chuck Harmon, an outfielder, became a Phillie through a 1957 mid-season deal to become the third black player to break the Phillies color barrier. . Shortstop, Chico Fernandez, was the first, debuting on 1957's Opening Day and third baseman, John Kennedy was next debuting a few days later. Kennedy was soon gone, however, playing a total of only 5 MLB games. Harmon was third, coming to the Phillies later that year via a trade with the St. louis Cardinals. See photos of Harmon with all three of his major league teams on the previous page; Page 54, Section: 1080. Harmon was also the first black player to play in the majors for the Cincinnati Reds when he made his major leagues' debut on April 17, 1954. Harmon's teams in his four year major leagues career were: 1954-1956: Cincinnati Reds; 1956-1957: St. Louis Cardinals; 1957: Philadelphia Phillies. Ted Simmons - A Good Shot at the Hall Of Fame this coming December?
Ted Simmons missed being elected to the National Baseball Hall Of Fame by an era Veterans committee by one vote two years ago. His era's group, "Modern Baseball - 1970-1987" comes up for election this December at the annual Winter Meetings. He's got to be the leading candidate to be elected from this era this time around.
Simmons played 21 MLB seasons (ages 19 to 39) between 1968 and 1988. He made 8 all-star teams, hitting over .300 seven times, with a career high of .332 in 1976. He had six years with at least 20 home runs (career high 26 HR in 1979) and 10 seasons with at least 80 RBI, 8 years with at least 90 RBI and three seasons with 100 RBI or more (career high 108 RBI in 1983. He caught 1,771 games and also had over 200 games each at first base and as a designated hitter. He also occasionally played in the outfield or as a third baseman. He had 248 home runs and had 1,389 RBI for his career. He hit .285 lifetime with 2,472 Hits in 2,456 MLB games: Career: 1968-1980 St. Louis Cardinals/NL; 1981-1985: Milwaukee Brewers/AL; 1986-1988: Atlanta Braves/NL. Pictured Above: Ted Simmons' 1970 Topps card. OOOPS!!!! This post was meant for Gambo and T_Wil1 (Majors), not General Baseball Image Discussion. I'm afraid It's Too late to change it now. It was originally posted there... I'm guessing that one of the moderators moved it to this more appropriate thread.

ESPN Baseball Coverage Credibilty
On Sunday we had to endure the presentation of Hank Aaron depicted on National television alongside Jackie Robinson while wearing a Boston Braves uniform ….. a team he never represented.
The next night the baseball presentation puts forward the notion that one of the reasons that made Robinson such an ikon was that baseball was a pioneer among Major sports in being the first to give such an opportunity to those of his ethnic background!!!! Although it was not routine for black footballers to represent a NFL franchise numerous black footballers were given this opportunity most notably commencing with Fritz Pollard in 1920. What has happened to informed, professional sports commentary ? Last edited by UKBaseballfan; 07-03-2019 at 04:45 AM. |

That kind of misinformation is really unfortunate given the magnitude of the subject. On the other hand, I think we should consider ourselves lucky they even acknowledged baseball prior to 1960. Modern audiences tend to dismiss that type of baseball with the phrase "well, the game has changed..."

More on opening Day 1946
Beginning of MLB's Post World War Two Years ears (4/16/1946) Continued.
Hall Of Fame Slugger, Ralph Kiner (Pittsburgh) made his MLB debut today, as did the man whose home run in the 1950 season finale, sent the Philadelphia Phillies (Whiz kids) to the 1950 World Series as they narrowly edged the Brooklyn dogers for the Nl Pennant. sisler debuted as a St. louis Cardinal. The Cardinals would defeat the Boston Red Sox in a 7 game World Series. Ted Williams would be the MVP of the all-star game and the Retroactive Rookies of the Year would be American League: Hoot Evers (Detroit Tigers- .266 b. avg) and National League: Del Ennis (Philadelphia Phillies) with the Phillies' Ennis also taking The Sporting News' Rookie Of The Year honors (TSN made only one selection for both leagues). Ennis wasn't on the roster on Opening Day, but made his MLB debut soon after that on April 28. He batted .313, with 17 home runs and 73 RBI to defeat runner-up, Ralph Kiner (23 HR, 81 RBI, .247 b. avg.) for The Sporting News' ROY honors. NY Giants VS. Philadelphia Phillies - Opening Day 1946
Sample Box Score: Opening Day 1946 (4/16/1946).
NY Giants defeat Philadelphia Phillies at The Polo Grounds, NYC. Home Runs By Mel Ott (Giants); Ernie Lombardi (Giants); Ron Northey (Phillies) and Danny Murtaugh (Phillies). Two teams had player-managers in 1946. The Cleveland Indians (Lou Boudreau: 1942-1950) and the Philadelphia Phillies (Ben Chapman: 1945-1946)) were player-managers in 1946. Boudreau would be hailed for leading the Indians to their last World Series victory as a player-manager in 1948. Ben Chapman played in 24 games as a player-manager for the Phils in 1945, playing both in the outfield and pitching. In 1946 Player-Manager, Chapman inserted himself into only one game as a pitcher (May 12) which turned out to be the final game of a 1,717 game career (1930-1946). Hall Of Famers nearing the ends of their careers, Mel Ott and Ernie Lombardi, both with the NY Giants, played in this game. Last edited by MorganMiller1926; 04-16-2019 at 09:40 AM. |
