2020 Draft

2020 Draft
We have 5 picks in the first 2 rounds. 18th, 37th, 38th, 54th and 65th. We won’t pick again until the 5th round but will lose nothing with the extra early picks. I wasn’t seeing a ton of pitching depth in this draft, and will likely focus on college position players in an attempt to get some depth at various positions in the minors.

We’ll note the picks up to our 1st, and then just our picks from then on. Cesar Cordero is, to our scouts, the best position player in this draft. A 21 year old switch hitting outfielder with a triple crown bat, and 70 SB legs who can play across the outfield and will win gold gloves. OF Ted Russell, a 22 year old lefty, 3B Michael McGrath and OF Felix Estrada are all names that, if still around at 18, we’d love to try and grab.

1st Round
1) Staten Island Yankees-Vincent Everett 6’3” 195 LBS OF (18) Redwood Christian HS, CA. Our scouts have no interest here, especially with a 7.5M price tag. Had a monster sr year (.552-12-39 32 SB in 21 games). Has 20 speed.
2) Michigan Battlecats–Isaac Raines 6’2” 190 SP (17) Proviso East HS, IL. Good makeup, low 90’s fastball at 17, huge year vs average competition, asking 4.8M.
3) Dallas Texans- Thomas Gibson 5’11” 165 OF (17) Hamer HS, NY. Big glove, 20 speed, gap power (2.5* by our scouts) 2.6M ask.
4) Dallas Texans-Ricciardo Vasario 5’8” 180 OF (17) Druid Hills HS, GA. Another burner, same bat projection, 4M ask.
5) Edmonton Trappers-Thomas Brown 6’0 180 OF (18) Wake Forrest College (2nd year draft eligible).Edmonton selected him #4 overall in last years draft, failing to sign him. Clearly they love the kid.
6) Dayton Dragons-Aurelio Ramirez 6’2” 195 IF (21) Houston, Tx. Average, extra base hit bat, 20/20 speed/stealing ability. 2.2M
7) Michigan Battlecats-Daniel McGowan 6’0 215 SP (19) Pinole Valley HS, CA. Lefty projecting 4 pitches, 143-10 K/BB ratio. Wants 4.6 to sign. Michigan has been nails in the draft when it comes to pitching.
8) Corpus Christi Hooks-Jonathan Lyons 6’0 185 OF (17) St Edwards HS, FL. Not someone anywhere near the 1st on our board. Huge speed, OSA thinks he’s a 20 power guy.
9) Edmonton Trappers-Ivan Martinez 6’6” 210 SP (22) Stanford. HUGE body. OSA says he’s a 19/20 movement/control with a bowling ball sinker. For 9 million he better be as close as they think he is.
10) Boston Bombers-Greg Dickson 6’3” 200 SP (18) Ogden HS, UT. Our scouts have this kid as a 20/18/18 ceiling. Already mid to upper 90’s with an aces build. We’d find a way to get the 6.5M if he’d slid down. Boston’s stable of young horses just got more crowded.
11) West Michigan White Caps-Boyd Jackson 6’0 185 SP (17) Canevin Catholic HS, PA. We have him as a 2.5 star kid, 89-90 FB, decent sinker, split. Ridiculous #’s 78 IP 117 K’s 7 BB 0.80, asking 7 million.
12) Fresno Grizzlies-Frank Morgan 5’11” 205 OF (20) San Diego, CA. All around player, hit run and field.
13) Sacramento Rivercats-Mark Allen 5’11” 215 SP (18) Trinity at Meadow View HS, VA. Low to mid 90’s sinker, good change and split. 5.5 million ask.
14) Houston Roughriders-Patrick White 6’1” 210 C (19) Aurora Christian HS, CO. outstanding HS catcher, bat projects to have pop.
15) Alaska Avalanche-Florent Rivet 6’3” 215 1B/3B (22) Concordia (PQ), Montreal. OSA loves him, huge bat projection, average, power, eye , decent wheels, good defender on the corners.
16) Los Angeles Wizards-Ryan Butler 6’1” 195 SP (21) Portland College, OR. Mid to upper 90’s arm, 3+ pitches, wants 4.6.
17) New Hampshire Fisher Cats-Juan Martinez 6’3” 195 SP (18) Philadelphia Montgomery, PA. Righty with low to mid 90’s already. Our guys have him as a 3 or 4 guy if he stays healthy.

Our pick. Cordero is there, and while it’s awesome, it worries me a tad that a bat we have as that big, lasted. He’s asking a bit over the slot but we’re good with it.
1) Cesar Cordero 6’3” Bryant College, RI. OF Switch (21)-Huge toolset, glove, bat, legs, every skill is or projects as 16+. Scouts say he’s smart with a high baseball IQ and a great work ethic. Durable as hell to. If we nail this pick, this kids a franchise player.
2) Ted Russell 6’5” 210 UMKC, MO. RF Left (22). Huge power bat, very good wheels, average defender. A leader, good influence and a hard worker.
3) Michael McGrath 6’0 Farleigh Dickinson, NJ. 3B/SS Right (21) Every offensive skill projects to 14+, bad wheels, very good glove, cannon arm.
4) Felix Estrada 6’2” 210 Centenary, LA CF/RF Right (23) Good legs, top of the order bat (perfect 2 hole bat). Already has ++ range and ++ arm to play either position. Likely a guy to go straight to AA when he signs.
5) Brian Wilson 6’2” 205 Cardinal Stritch, OH OF (17) 1st high school player. HUGE power potential, very high risk high reward project. Has charisma but work habits are an issue.
6) Francisco Lopez 5’11” 190 Lone Oak HS, KY C (17) Righty bat that has monster pop potential, very good eye. Good teammate, hard worker.
7) Greg Bennett 5’11” 220 Texas SP (21) Good FB, can be a pen lefty is starting doesn’t pan out.
8) Victor Rodriguez 5’7” 185 East Carolina RP (22) mid to upper 90’s right now. The second the command shapes up he’s an IBL arm.
9) Bill Heard 6’4” 210 New Orleans 1B (21) decent glove, no wheels, nice bat across the board.
10) Steve “Basket Case” Bascombe 5’9” 175 TCU SP (22) About 6 inches below a SP’s height, but durable innings eater who could be a reliever.
11) Manuel Diaz 5’11” 205 Anderson Christian HS, SC SP (17) power arm, 92-94 already. Bit on the small side, but a minor league SP who could be a major league bullpen guy.
12) Ruben Arroyo 6’4” 205 Cal State Fullerton 3B (20) good runner, bat could surprise, decent glove, great arm.
13) Mark Nugent 6’5” 215 Wilson HS, CA C (18) likely FAR TOO BIG to catch, but could play 1st. Great eye for a teenager, runs ok.
14) Ernesto Gonzalez 6’1” 190 Texas 2B/3B (21) already gold glove capable. Decent runner who’s smart on the bases. Backup IF seems to be highest projectable case.
15) Jeffery Jenkins 6’0 195 LF/RF (18) good glove, good wheels, top of the lineup contact bat.
16) Hugh Reed 5’6” 190 3B (20) plays with a chip on his 5’6” shoulder.
17) Mario Colon 6’1” 225 SP (17) has outstanding command but needs to gain velocity or he won’t progress
18) Derek Goodwin 6’4” 225 C/1B (18) big body, no wheels, work ethic a concern, flyer pick with a lot of risk.
I let the computer pick the last few, and for some stupid reason, and I knew it would happen, he picks a crap ton of catchers…. Have to sort that one out.

Funny thing is, check back to the opening paragraph on the draft. The 3 players I was looking at with pick 18? I got all 3.

Authors note!

I have imported the Chicago Iron Pigs Dynasty to OOTP 14, and am working out some kinks, figuring everything out, and continuing. Some very cool new features. Question, is it ok to paste photo's and what not, as I have been doing, of software that's in beta?

GREAT GAMES-Esteban Figueroa (SAC) tossed the 21st no-hitter in IBL history and the 3rd in Sacramento River Cats history by downing the Pittsburgh Bulldogs 4-0. The 25 year old is 8-4 3.47 in 15 starts.
6/23 ALK 13 CHI 5 Morgan (4-2) 3 HR's 7 ER 3 IP. Avalanche hit 5 homers. Roman (ALK) 3-5 2 HR's (11) 5 RBI's. Riggs 3-4 Chavez HR (20)
INJURY NEWS-Alex Rodriguez (BUF) will miss at least the next 3 months for the Bisons after fracturing an ankle today. The 29 year old was hitting .251-11-39 in 65 games.
6/24 CHI 15 ALK 5 18 hits Chavez (21) Rivera (9) Ramirez (3) Salinas (12) homer. Collins 3-6 Ash 3-5 Lorenzelli 2 2B's (19) Trujillo (7-5) struggles (5 ER 6 IP) but wins. Sabathia (4-6) gets pounded for 4 HR's 7 ER's 6.1 IP.
TRADE News-Buffalo sent 28 year old slugger Jim Roberts to the Sacramento River Cats for two very good players. 25 year old Elvis Mardell who will take over the every day job behind the plate, and 22 year old hitting prospect Everett Cox. Cox was the River Cats 2015 1st rounder, and Mardell was drafted in the 4th round of 2016 and has turned into a very good every day player. The Bisons are 5 out in the Empire, 2.5 back in the WC.
MILESTONE-38 year old Closer Joe Boswell recorded his 300th career save today. He joins Ernesto Cruz (324) and Julio Gonzalez (319) in the 300 save club.
6/25 SI 6 CHI 2 Lee (6-8) 6 ER 5 IP, 4 run 2nd. Collins hurt in the 7th. Lorenzelli 3-4 2B (20)
INJURY NEWS-Hugh will miss a week, no more, so I'll try to manage like hell and not make a roster move. I guess this is 'injury' news as well. Head Trainer Ricco Cotichini agreed to a contract extension. The 63 year old will be here 4 more years, and I am guessing that'll be when he hangs it up.
Jim Roberts, the OF Sacramento acquired yesterday, went 4-8 with 2 HR's in the 2 games since being traded, and was hurt in todays game. They put him on the 15 day.
6/26 SI 6 CHI 4 Went too far with Martinez (6-7) CG 8-7-6-6-2-11 2 run homer (Leduc) in the 8th to lose it. 123 pitches. Salinas HR (13) Chavez SB (26)

INJURY NEWS-And he'll hit the DL, out at least 4 weeks with a strained hip. Wes Webb will likely take over at 2nd, and we will put John Overhill on the 40 man, and call him up today.

All Star Break stats

The leagues hitting, and pitching, at the break.
The Coastal league.
Tulsa and San Antonio back at it, Philly trying to get back to another series. Boston faded, sorry to see that but the Keystone is tight.
River Cats giving it another run.
Some outstanding young talent, Castro is 25, Perez 24. I like New Hampshire's chances.

The Frontier...

At the AS Break.

The Knights are a legit threat every year now it seems. I might have fallen too far back to make up the ground, and may end up trying to get the WC spot, something I'd NEVER have expected at the end of camp. Columbus is just crushing the ball. I really thought this was the year we'd begin to hear from both Michigan, and West Michigan. The Battlecats lost Castillo for the year and are trading for pitching. Dayton is just bad, real bad.

At home

Our hitting, pitching, at the break.
Collins, Coates, Ash and Chavez combined with Rios and Salinas means someone's getting squeezed out of AB's unless someone's hurt. It's been Ash for the most part, but that could be changing. I need Rios' power, but Ash is raking. Knox is having an abysmal season at the plate. If he didn't have a gold glove Martinez would be getting ALL the PT. Rivera's D is killing me, I am unsure how to handle it other than to get him out of the game ASAP with late leads.

Lee's W/L is a fluke, he's making mistakes at crucial times and the offense isn't giving him room to. The BABIP makes me think the staff is what it is, with no one really regressing, or shooting up. If Morgan can get his walks down, he's going to be something.

The 2020 All Stars

Pretty sure this is the 1st season without an Iron Pig pitcher in the game. Only 1 player that started the year on the roster made the club for us.

GOOD GAMES-Fresno SP Cordell Bond, acquired from Alaska yesterday, tossed a 5-hitter in a 2-0 win over LA.
7/14 CHI 5 WMI 4 Collins 2-4 2 2B's (16) Chavez SB (30) Coates, Rios, Lorenzelli 2 hits apiece. Morgan (6-3) 6.2-4-3-3-2-7 Cruz SV (23) White Caps hit 4 solo homers.
7/15 WMI 4 CHI 1 3 more errors (Rivera's 19th) Trujillo (9-6) 7-9-3-2-1-4 Johnson (WMI) 8-5-1-0-2-5 W (9-8) Conklin SV (30)
7/16 CHI 5 BRO 4 (11) Ramirez 2 run PH game tying single in the 9th, GW HR (5) in the 11th. Collins HR (18) Hall 8 K's 6 IP ND Cruz SV (24)

CONTRACTS-Abel Bernarda, 29 year old 2B for El Paso, signed a 4 year 28M dollar extension with the Diablos today. Coming off a career high 30 homer season the infielder has struggled to a .208 average so far, with many speculating the looming contract issues were a big part of that.
7/18 AZ 8 CHI 7 Cruz BS (4) 2 runs 3 hits .1 IP. Lee 7.1-7-5-2-0-5 Rivera 20th error. Rios HR (9) Price (AZ) 3-6 HR (8 ) 4 RBI's (39)
7/19 AZ 6 CHI 5 Pennington 3 run homer on 1st pitch of appearance. Morgan 6.1 IP 7 K's 4 BB's leaves 2 on, both score. Ramirez 2-4 HR (6) Collins 2-5 3B (5) 2 RBI's (71) Ubadah (AZ) 2-4 2 HR's (27) 4 RBI's (94)
TRADES-Green Bay sent aging slugger Luis Rios, 39, and top pitching prospect Denis Rogers (20) to Pittsburgh for 30 year old SP Antonio Castro. Pittsburgh is 11 out, so Rios was a AAA filler at this point, can fill in if need be, but Rogers is a legit 2 or 3 if he continues his current trajectory. Castro is a huge power arm with massive command issues. Definitely starting to put it together now. In 19 starts he was 5-6 4.18 with 140 punch outs in 112 IP, but 64 walks. Still down from the 71 walks in 70 IP last year. Kirby Dean (4-9 6.25) was optioned out and MR David Becker was placed on irrevocable waivers to make room.

WEEK 16 SUMMARY
FL POTW-Ernesto Tobias (MICH) 11-23 2 HR's 7 RBI's (.263-4-30)

SCHEDULE: Huge Week!! 3 @ Columbus/3 @ Green Bay/Off day

7/20 COL 7 CHI 5 Ellison serves up Schalls 34th (2 run shot) in the 7th to lose it. M.Jones (COL) 8-9-5-2-3-8 W (13-3) Salinas 3-3 2 RBI's (64)
TRADE NEWS-Managed to pull the trigger on a semi big deal after the game. Dealt backup Catcher Martin Ramirez AAA SP Dave Wamboldt and 22 year old RP Christopher Fremont and our 2021 1st (18th overall) to Dayton for 24 year old former Iron Pig Catcher Shane Jackson, 19 year old C prospect Ron Moore, 27 year old AAA super utility guy Vinicius Montaury and Daytons 2021 #1 (right now it's the 1st overall pick!). Ramirez was one of our hotter hitters, and is just 27, Wamboldt was 16-2 2.98 in AAA last year, and Fremont is a power reliever with bad/poor command. Moore is a legit 4 star guy in our scouts opinion, and Jackson hits left handed, and is a better defender than Ramirez, giving us some options vs RHP. Our offensive output from behind the plate has been horrid, and we have little depth, which Moore really does help with. The pick could turn out HUGE if Dayton stays where they are, which they likely will.
7/21 CHI 4 COL 2 Rios 3-4 2B (16) HR (10) Hall (12-3) 7-4-1-1-3-9 Cruz SV(25)
MILESTONES-Ross Tunstall (LV) joined the 300 HR club today, going 2-5 with 5 RBI's. He's a career .289 hitter with 930 RBI's in 1223 games.
7/22 CHI 10 COL 8 Riggs 1-2 3 Runs 4 BB's Salinas 3-6 3 RBI's (67) Miller 3-5 2 RBI's (29) Webb 3-4 2B HR (12) C.Gonzalez (COL) 4-5 HR (5) Hudson (COL) 2-4 2 HR's (23) 4 RBI's (75) Debesa (22) Garcia (9) homer for Columbus. Rivera 21st error. Cruz SV (26)
7/23 CHI 8 GB 4 Miller 2-5 3 RBI's Rivera 4-5. C.Crawford (GB) 3-5 SB (37) Holt W (5-1)
TRADE NEWS-A seemingly normal day took a turn late after our win over Green Bay and we've managed to make what we feel is a huge trade. Unsure of the motive, but I think it had to do with payroll, Buffalo was shopping 2 time gold glove winner 25 year old SS Andre Blakeway. He was their 2016 1st rounder out of Tulane and the 2017 and 2019 FL GG winner at Short. He's a career .287/.392/.395 hitter who has great gap pop, and an outstanding eye. He's a RH hitter. The ask was Wes Webb and one of our blue chip prospects. In subsequent talks we managed to swap out the prospect for next years 3rd round pick, and Buffalo quickly agreed. Blakeway signed a 3 year 24M dollar deal prior to this season, with base salaries of 8.5 and 9 the next 2 years, and we felt that we could manage the payroll hit, for the talent level of the player. He'll assume everyday SS duties, pushing Lorenzelli to our backup IF role.
In other big trade news, the last place and IBL worst Dayton Dragons sent their 25 year old closer Luc Bonnet (2-5 22 Saves 3.32) to Arizona for their 2019 supplemental pick OF Bob Carter. Carter is a 19 year old power hitting OF prospect. Arizona, 3.5 up on El Paso, moves Bonnet into a LH setup role for 35 year old Closer Alex Browne. Brown will be a free agent at seasons end, so in addition to getting another power lefty in the pen, the Greyhounds picked up their closer of the future. Bonnet is said to be furious at the move.
7/24 CHI 9 GB 4 Chavez 4-6 3 RBI's (75) Rios 3-5 Blakeway 2-4 2B Morgan (7-3) 7-6-1-1-3-8
7/25 GB 4 CHI 1 Trujillo 6 BB's 7 K's 5.1 IP L (9-7) Benjamin (GB) 8-6-1-1-3-8
7/26 Off Day MILESTONE NEWS! Former Iron Pig Wesley Morgan joined the 300 club today in the Silver Stars 11-10 win over Dallas. Morgan hit 268 of his 300 HR's in Chicago. He's a career .280/.369/.527 hitter with 909 RBI's in 1189 games.

WEEK 17 SUMMARY
FL POTW-Wes Webb (BUF) HA! 11-23 3 HR's 7 RBI's (.281-14-34)
