SEPT. 10, 2016

Memphis 8, Chicago 3: Denny LeMaster (8-14, 4.01) was pounded for 7 runs over 2 2/3, and Brian Lawrence (8-10, 4.88) wouldn't let them come back despite the Chicago's bullpen's strong work after LeMaster's ouster. Otto Velez and George Wright homered for Memphis.

Sacramento 9, St. Louis 6: The Stingers beat 20-game winner Tommy Bond, handing him his 7th loss, banging out 18 hits that included two homers from Ted Kluszewski. Don Buford added four hits for Sacramento. Rookie Duke Snider hit his 9th for St. Louis.

Arizona 7, Wichita 1: Justin Verlander (8-12) threw a complete-game 3-hitter as the Brigade continue to falter in September, now having dropped 8 of 9, their offense sputtering terribly. Willie Wells had two hits, including his 16th homer, and drove in 3 for the Sandmen.

Memphis 5, Chicago 0: The Strummers play spoiler, taking 3 of 4 against the Hitmen, this time as Tim Lincecum (14-9, 3.40) shuts them out on a complete game six-hitter. Jack Clements drove in three, hitting his sixth homer.

Sacramento 5, St. Louis 4: The Stingers score three in the ninth, led by RBI doubles from Jack Clark and Don Buford as Joe Sambito blows the save for the Tides. Joe Benz threw 3 2/3 scoreless innings of relief, and now has a 1.47 ERA since August 1.

Wichita 8, Arizona 6: The Brigade break their losing streak but not without event, as they almost blow the lead made by their 7-run second inning. Joe Kennedy, Joe Wood and Chad Cordero combine for 4 2/3 scoreless innings of relief though to back Jonas Gaines. Jay Gibbons and Ken Griffey homered for Wichita, which is hoping for a miracle.

SEPT. 13, 2016

No contenders played on the 12th, so we move to Sept. 13th as the stretch drive continues, and a hugely important series for the top of the Northern League West kicks off.

Sacramento 3, Chicago 2: Socks Seybold hit a two-run homer, his 15th of the season, off Johan Santana (12-8, 4.70) and Carlos Marmol (11-12, 3.95) struck out 9 over 7 1/3 as the Stingers took game one of a vital 3-game series in Sacramento, creating a tie atop the division. Frank Baker hit an RBI triple in the top of the 9th with two outs off Ed Siever, but Mark Mulder came on to get Babe Ruth to ground out with the tying run on third.

Indianapolis 7, Wichita 3: The Engines handed Jay Hughes his third straight loss and 15th of the season, getting homers from Elmer Flick (9) and Larry Doby (10). Doug Waechter (1-1, 5.23) got the win for the Engines.

SEPT. 14, 2016

Chicago 2, Sacramento 1: Ben Sanders (17-8, 3.28) came up huge, outdueling Sacramento ace Bob Veale as the Hitmen overcame a first inning homer from Ted Kluszewski, getting a pinch-hit single from Frank Isbell in the top of the 9th off George Mullin to score Patsy Dougherty. Brandon Lyon notched his 14th save for Chicago, which restaked its claim to the top of the division.

Wichita 6, Indianapolis 1: Rube Waddell (10-11, 4.59) was strong again for Wichita, making the most of a 16-hit attack that saw four hits from Larry Doyle and three apiece from Jay Gibbons and Eddie Collins.

Sacramento 6, Chicago 4: The Stingers scored four in the third against Denny LeMaster (8-15) as Art Fletcher hit a 3-run shot and Ted Kluszewski hit his 15th, and 5th of the month, to go back-to-back. Babe Ruth hit his 24th homer of the season in the loss, which once again evens things up atop the division. Rube Marquard won his 17th.

Chicago 4, Philadelphia 2: Bert Campaneris stayed hot, batting .320 on the month, stroking a big 2-run double in a 3-run fifth that but the Hitmen ahead for good. Len Barker (10-11, 3.82) went 8 strong innings and Brandon Lyon, though shaky again, got his 15th save. Russ Ford fell to 12-16 for the Ringers.

Wichita 4, Sacramento 1: Clinging to their season by a thread, the Brigade get 8 innings of 1-run ball from Johnny Schmitz (13-8, 3.45) and a two-run shot from Jay Gibbons, his 21st, as the Stingers mustered only six hits.

Philadelphia 6, Chicago 5: The Ringers got to loser Howie Pollet (12-9, 3.82) early, scoring 4 in the second. Pollet righted the ship, lasting into the 8th, but Chicago's comeback fell short. Ed Walsh (12-14, 3.91) got the win for Philadelphia. Frank Baker had two more hits and 3 RBI for the Hitmen, continuing his hot hitting.

Wichita 5, Sacramento 2: The Brigade are scratching and clawing and make up ground today with a big win. Ricky Nolasco (13-14, 4.70) went the distance for Wichita, backed by homers from Frank Chance (12) and Larry Doyle (4). Dave Stewart (10-15, 4.28) took the loss for the Stingers.

Chicago 14, Philadelphia 8: The heart pumped strong for the Hitmen, as their vaunted heart of the order delivered in a huge way. Charley Jones hit two homers, giving him a league best 31, and Babe Ruth and Roger Connor also went deep as the Hitmen scored 10 runs over the last three innings for a comeback victory.

Sacramento 12, Wichita 10: It was slugest day in the west, as this one was even more crazy than the Chicago game. Sacramento built a 9-0 lead only to have Wichita come all the way back and tie it at 9 with a 6-run bottom of the 8th. But the Stingers got 3 in the top of the 9th and staved off a comeback attempt from the Brigade in the bottom half to win it and keep pace with the Hitmen. Al Zarilla drove in four and Ted Kluszewski hit his 16th for the Stingers. Jay Gibbons hit his 22nd for Wichita.

Indianapolis 6, Chicago 4: A sloppy game kicks off this 4-game set, as each team made three errors. Chicago's proved more costly, though, leading to two unearned runs that proved the difference in the game. Doug Waechter (2-1, 4.76) bested Ben Sanders (17-9, 3.31). Charley Jones smacked his 32nd homer in the loss for Chicago. Hanley Ramirez had four hits for the Engines.

Sacramento 6, Milwaukee 5: The Bangers had hoped this series would mean something, but that ship sailed a while ago. Bob Veale (15-2) was strong again for the Stingers, who got Ted Kluszewski's 17th homer, and 7th of the month. Milwaukee rookie Al Rosen hit his 18th in the loss, as Sacramento tied up the division again.

Indianapolis 7, Chicago 2: It's been a rough go for Denny LeMaster, who falls to 8-16 and is 2-7 since August 1. Chicago leaves 12 on base as a team, with the heart of Ruth, Jones and Connor leaving 4, 5 and 5, respectively. Stan Musial had three hits, including a homer, for the Engines.

Sacramento 3, Milwaukee 2: Rube Marquard wins number 18 as the Stingers take over first place, outdueling John Montefusco, who was strong over 7 1/3. Whitey Lockman drove in a pair for Sacramento. Jonny Gomes, who led the league in homers at the all-star break, hit only his second since then for Milwaukee's runs.

New York 5, Wichita 2: The Heroes hung a four-spot on Jay Hughes in the first and Harry Krause went 8 strong to win his 16th for New York. Dick Radatz earned his 21st save.

Indianapolis 3, Chicago 0: The Engines take their third straight, relishing the role of spoiler. This time it's Andy Coakley (15-14, 4.42), who goes the distance. Pedro Guerrero had three hits and Elmer Flick had a pair for the Engines. Len Barker was solid, allowing 3 runs over 8, but still fell to 10-12.

Milwaukee 10, Sacramento 7: Tank Carr slammed three homers for Milwaukee against Sacramento's Bob Shawkey, preventing the Stingers from taking a 2-game lead in the West. Eddie Cicotte, loser of 21 games, won his 11th.

New York 8, Wichita 7: The Heroes blew a 7-3 lead, but survived Dick Radatz' 8th blown save and got an RBI single from Tony Perez to end it in the bottom of the 10th.

Indianapolis 6, Chicago 3: Up 3-0 on the strength of a pair of Babe Ruth homers, the Hitmen dropped their fourth straight at home, getting swept by the Engines in the four-game series. Mike Koplove, acquired at the deadline for Geovany Soto, was pummeled for three runs in an inning of work after Johan Santana, used in a surprise relief performance, allowed the Engines to tie the game. Pedro Guerrero hit a 2-run double in the 9th to give Indianapolis the lead.

Milwaukee 4, Sacramento 2: Benjamin Boyd hit a 3-run shot off loser Dave Stewart (10-16) as Milwaukee took the final game of the four-game set. Moose Haas (8-13) earned the win with 8 strong innings.

New York 4, Wichita 3: Rube Waddell went 8 innings and was solid, but was victimized again by the home run ball. He allowed homers to Tony Perez and Duffy Lewis, the latter coming in the 8th to break a 3-3 tie. Waddell has now given up a league worst 39 homers.

SEPT. 23, 2016

A new addition here, as things have gotten interesting in the Southern League East, where the Memphis Strummers have tightened things up on the frontrunner St. Louis Tides after taking 2 of 3 from them earlier this week.

WEST

Sacramento 7, Charlotte 3: Losing the final two in Milwaukee hurt because Sacramento could have put some distance between them and Chicago, who was getting swept at home by Indianapolis. But at least the Stingers are in the driver's seat now, and they put the pressure on with a win at Charlotte, knocking Ralph Branca (14-13) around. Carlos Marmol (12-12) gave up a three-run homer to David Wright, his 19th, but little else.

Chicago 10, Milwaukee 5: An 18-hit barrage led by homers from Babe Ruth and Biz Mackey as the Hitmen ratchet the offense up once again. Though he wasn't great, Ben Sanders went the distance, winning his 18th. Smokey Joe Williams (17-13) took the loss.

Indianapolis 12, Wichita 9: The Engines continue to relish the role of spoiler, while Wichita continues to implode. Up 9-0 in the 7th, Brigade pitchers allowed 10 runs in the bottom half of the inning in what could be the loss that crushes them. Larry Doby drove in four for Indianapolis. Cesar Tovar did the same for Wichita.

EAST

New Orleans 11, St. Louis 1: Mark Prior (9-12, 4.75) has struggled, a big reason New Orleans isn't in the hunt. But he allowed 1 hit, a first inning RBI double to Johnny Evers, as the Knights pummeled Steve Hargan (4-2, 3.09). Roger Repoz hit a grand slam in a 6-run seventh for New Orleans.

Memphis 5, Oklahoma City 4: Willie Stargell hit a 3-run homer for Memphis and Fred Clarke hit one for Oklahoma City. But in the end, John Lackey (14-12, 4.30) outlasted Walter Johnson (15-15, 3.58) and Memphis worked its way to within five games of the Tides. Though time is short, the teams do meet for a three-game set to end the season.

WEST

Sacramento 5, Charlotte 2: Bob Veale was his usual brilliant self, winning his 16th, allowing only a 2-run homer to Albert Pujols. Don Buford had three hits for Sacramento, and Jack Clark, Al Zarilla and Brian Downing each had two.

Chicago 5, Milwaukee 4: The Hitmen rallied from a 4-1 deficit, tying it with a 3-run 6th and breaking the tie with a Patsy Dougherty single in the bottom of the 8th. Joe Bush earned his 5th win with two perfect innings of relief.

Indianapolis 6, Wichita 4: Were Wichita closer, this would be a tragic ending. Now it's just accelerating the inevitable. If yesterday's loss wasn't bad enough, today they lead 4-2 in the bottom of the 9th only to allow a 2-run homer to Larry Doby to tie it, and another 2-run shot to Pedro Guerrero for a walkoff loss. The best Wichita can do now is tie for the division, a most unlikely scenario.

EAST

New Orleans 5, St. Louis 4: Gabe Gross and Dwayne Murphy each homered off Victor Zambrano (4-7) as the defending champion Knights try to disrupt the Tides' popping of the champagne.

Oklahoma City 4, Memphis 3: Dale Murphy's three-run homer off Britt Burns wasn't enough, as Oklahoma City scored four unanswered runs off Billy Rhines (11-17, 3.71) in the middle game of this 3-game set. A lost opportunity for the Strummers.

WEST

Sacramento 11, Charlotte 3: Rube Marquard wins number 19, coasting after the Stingers put up a 5-run first against 19-year-old Curt Simmons (7-5, 4.21). Jack Clark and Socks Seybold homered for the Stingers, who banged out 20 hits on the day. The win eliminates Wichita from contention.

Milwaukee 3, Chicago 2: John Montefusco won his 15th of the year despite a 4.80 ERA, going 8 strong to outduel Len Barker (10-13, 3.70). Nick Johnson hit his 7th homer of the season to break a 2-2 tie in the 6th.

EAST

New Orleans 6, St. Louis 5: The Knights overcome a 5-run third by St. Louis to rally and complete the sweep. Pete Rose homered twice and Chad Tracy homered as well against Fergie Jenkins (7-4, 4.09)

Memphis 5, Oklahoma City 0: Blue Moon Odom (15-5, 3.59) threw a complete game 1-hit shutout, allowing only a single to Lance Parrish to lead off the second. Odom walked two and struck out five in a game that was 1-0 going into the ninth, when Memphis scored four - three unearned - off Ron Guidry (12-15, 4.42)

WEST

Sacramento 6, Chicago 2: A three-game set in Chicago has major implications, and the Stingers ensure themselves the division lead when they leave town by taking Game One, putting them three games up. Bob Shawkey (8-12, 4.54) carried a shutout into the 9th against the vaunted Hitmen offense, allowing a 2-run Biz Mackey homer before exiting.

WEST

Sacramento 7, Chicago 4: Chicago blows a 4-1 lead as the Stingers score five runs in the 8th to win it. Howie Pollet (12-10, 3.80) was strong for seven but began to fall apart, and Brandon Lyon couldn't stem the tide in blowing his 9th save. Dave Stewart
(11-16, 4.29) went 8 innings for the win and Mark Mulder notched his 24th save as Sacramento's magic number is down to 1.

EAST

St. Louis 5, Alabama 2: Tommy Bond wins number 22 for the Tides, as Dick Higham bangs four hits, driving in two. John Beckwith had three hits for St. Louis. Rookie Alvin Dark had the first three-hit game of his career for Alabama.

Orlando 7, Memphis 3: Tim Lincecum allows four runs in the second and Memphis is unable to recover. Aaron Harang loses the win when a rain delay halts the game for 76 minutes 1 out away from being official. Ted Easterly, who has quietly had a great season for Orlando, batting .296, had four hits in the win. The Tides' magic number is 1.

WEST

Chicago 5, Sacramento 2: The Hitmen stave off elimination for another day, getting a homer from Roger Connor and a strong outing from Ben Sanders, who earned his 19th win with 8 strong innings of work. Carlos Marmol (12-13, 3.90) took the loss.

Alabama 5, St. Louis 2: The Tides can't clinch on their own as Eppa Rixey (8-10, 3.44) hurls a complete game 4-hitter to keep the champagne corked. Sammy Strang
had three hits including a 3-run homer, and 4 RBI.

Memphis 4, Orlando 2: The Strummers won't pack it in yet. Down 2-0 in the top of the 8th, they score four runs to hand Denny McLain his 20th loss of the season. Bobby Murcer hit a 2-run single in the rally, and John Lackey won his 15th with 8 solid innings. If the Tides win tomorrow in the series finale, they have a shot at tying for the division if they can sweep St. Louis to wrap up the season.

Orlando 1, Memphis 0: Talk about anti-climactic. With the opportunity to head home for a 3-game set that could spur a one-game playoff, Memphis mustered five hits against three Orlando pitchers, and Rocco Baldelli hit a solo shot off Billy Rhines in the fifth for the game's only run...the run that ends Memphis' season and gives St. Louis its first division crown.

WEST

Wichita 9, Chicago 5: Len Barker went 3-11 in the second half of the season, and his last loss was the most damaging. Before Sacramento even took the field out west to host Indianapolis, the Stingers had won the division crown. Barker was tagged for 8 runs in 2 2/3 and the Hitmen couldn't muster enough offense to complete the comeback. Joe Kennedy threw four scoreless innings of relief for Wichita in the win.

Indianapolis 5, Sacramento 3: It didn't matter, but Hanley Ramirez broke a 3-3 tie with a two-run homer in the 9th off Joe Benz to hand a Sacramento team drunk on pre-game division crown champagne the loss. Bob Veale took a no decision for Sacramento. Doug Waechter won his third for the Engines, and Hooks Wiltse earned his 27th save.
