If he stands off, yes. As this sounds like the Italian player had time to wait for Neill to commit himself before tripping over him, Neill therefore had time to stay on his feet, close him down and block-tackle. If you 'dive in' in the area, you risk giving away a penalty.

Sounds resonable - but I don't see any correlation between the "good" referees and "good" refereeing performances in this World Cup. An English referee made the worst single mistake, and a German the worst overall performance I've seen.

Trying to get away from referees, I had this game down as 1-1 in 90 minutes, FWIW.

Even the "best" referees will have off days, and if they are not up to scratch, then like Mr. Poll and Mr. Ivanov they will be on the first plane home.
However, can you tell me how much experience a referee from Benin has, of refereeing a big game on the scale of a World Cup finals game?
