1968 World Series results
1968 World Series: Cleveland Guardians vs. Philadelphia Phillies
Results Game 1, October 2nd, 1968, Connie Mack Stadium World Series Game 1 Victory for Merritt and Philadelphia The World Series got off to a quiet start, with the host Philadelphia Phillies taking a low-scoring, 2-1 win over the Cleveland Guardians. Philadelphia left-hander Jim Merritt was marvelous at Connie Mack Stadium. The Phillies now hold a 1-0 lead in the best-of-7 series. Philadelphia catcher Johnny Bench helped the Phillies go up, 2-1, in the bottom of the sixth inning. With the game tied, Bench hit a solo home run off Cleveland pitcher Don Drysdale. "We lost," Cleveland manager Grant Bowler said later. "We'll deal with it. The series isn't over." The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Connie Mack Stadium in Philadelphia. Phillies lead series 1-0 Game 2, October 3rd, 1968, Connie Mack Stadium Philadelphia Tops Cleveland Again, 9-1 Riding the 3-hit performance of third baseman Bill Melton, the Philadelphia Phillies stopped the visiting Cleveland Guardians, 9-1, in Game 2 of the World Series. Melton was 3-3 with a double, 2 singles, and a walk, while scoring 4 times for the Phillies, who now lead the best-of-7 series, 2 games to 0. With Philadelphia leading 1-0 in the bottom of the fourth, Ed Kirkpatrick hit a 2-run single off Cleveland pitcher Denny Lemaster. It put the Phillies ahead 3-0. "They say the first rule of the playoffs is to win the home games," Kirkpatrick said afterward. "It feels nice, but it is kind of what we were supposed to do." Game 3 is scheduled for Saturday at Cleveland Stadium in Cleveland. Phillies lead series 2-0 Game 3, October 5th, 1968, Cleveland Stadium Road Win Lifts Philadelphia to 3-0 Lead in WS The Philadelphia Phillies are one game away from a sweep of the Cleveland Guardians after a road win at Cleveland Stadium, 5-3. Phillies left-hander Sandy Koufax had a strong outing. He threw 6.0 innings of 2-hit ball. Philadelphia now holds a 3-0 advantage in the best-of-7 World Series. The result might have been different, had it not been for former first round draft pick Johnny Bench. Bench had a run-scoring double in the top of the ninth inning to put the Phillies ahead, 4-3. For the game, Bench had 1 double and 2 singles in 5 at-bats. "Every team in baseball loses," Guardians manager Grant Bowler said. "We're in the playoffs and we still have the same guys that got us here. We'll bounce back." The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Cleveland Stadium in Cleveland. Phillies lead series 3-0 Game 4, October 6th, 1968, Cleveland Stadium Cleveland Breaks Through for First Win in World Series; Now Trails 3-1 Chris Short was not about to watch an opponent celebrate a championship on his home field. The left-hander pitched the Cleveland Guardians to victory at Cleveland Stadium, staving off the Philadelphia Phillies, who remain one game away from a title. Short threw 8.2 innings of 7-hit ball. The win cuts the series deficit for the Guardians to 3-1 in the best-of-7 series. Willie McCovey, who finished 3rd in the AL in runs with 87 in 1968, took Philadelphia hurler Pat Jarvis deep in the bottom of the third. His 2-run home run put the Guardians on top, 2-1. In all, McCovey had 1 single in addition to the home run, while going 2 for 4. "It was a good day but I'm not letting my guard down," McCovey said. "I'll let my guard down as soon as someone puts a big, fat championship ring on my finger." The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Cleveland Stadium in Cleveland. Phillies lead series 3-1 Game 5, October 7th, 1968, Cleveland Stadium Philadelphia Triumphs in World Series Sometimes the winner is the one who got the lucky bounces and the lucky calls, and sometimes the winner is just the one who played better. It was the latter case in 1968, as the Philadelphia Phillies topped the Cleveland Guardians 5-1 tonight at Cleveland Stadium to win the World Series. It was the 2nd title in franchise history. "When you play for championships, you have to play better than the team in the other dugout. We did that in this series, and all year. Now we're the best team in baseball," said Philadelphia center-fielder Johnny Briggs, who was named the series MVP. The Phillies took the series 4-1. The new titleholders completed the regular season with a first-place finish in the NL and a 96-66 record. Philadelphia manager Dutch Fehring grinned and nodded when asked to comment on Briggs's words. "Johnny said it best -- we played better than the other team," the skipper said. Hometown officials announced they were already planning a "grand celebration" for the winners in the days to come. Phillies win series 4-1 World Series MVP: CF Johnny Briggs (Philadelphia Phillies) |

New expansion teams for the 1969 season
Before the 1969 season, four expansion teams joined the AL and NL. In the AL, the expansion teams are the Kansas City Royals and Seattle Pilots while, in the NL, the teams are the Montreal Expos and San Diego Padres.
This caused both leagues to be split up into two divisions: the East and West--the AL West has the Royals and Pilots, the NL East has the Expos, and the Padres are in the West. Here are the divisions: Last edited by Lord Byron; 04-14-2024 at 01:11 AM. |
