It really blows my mind.

I am with you. I wish that had happened over the winter but they seem determined to see this through. In my dream world, they eat the whole salary and trade him to the Twins for a bag of balls. That would be huge win, paying for him to be a drag on an opponent's roster.

I think that we are stuck with a very expensive mistake.

Tigers gave Jose Urquidy a 1 year contract with a option for year 2. He's still recovering from Tommy John, but he did have some nice seasons in Houston. Fingers crossed that this under the radar signing pays off.

I like it. No downside at all. They pay him $1mil this year to rehab and work with the Detroit pitching staff. If he is worth keeping by year's end, they have a team option for 2026 at $4mil. If not, cut him loose.

Best case scenario is that he provides some depth help in late August / September and is a decent addition for 2026. Worst case scenario is they are out the $1mil

Flaherty looks so sharp already. If they can stay healthy, he and Skubal are going to be a fun one-two punch.

Parker Meadows and Matt Vierling are now slated to miss opening day. Dang.

Perez is back from whatever ailment he had at least.

Went into this off-season hoping that we might have Bregman at third. With the Vierling injury and Jung's woes at the plate, we will open with a platoon of Mckinstry and Ibanez.

That's steep drop-off in the hopes and dreams department.

Watching the Red Sox broadcast right now, and they mull over how the Tigers went from one albatros contract that was weighing them down to another, except that Miguel Cabrera was still universally revered/liked/appreciated when he couldn't really move anymore because he was generally likeable and had already put down a HOF career, while Javier Baez is none of that. He just plain sucks. The last bit there was adlibbed by me.

We've been using this one since 2022! I do change the title from time to time though. Until we rid ourselves of Javy, I like the current one but am open to a new suggestion.

My favorite was 2023 when westheim suggested some long silly name revolving around the Miggy farewell circus tour.

Then I agree wholeheartedly!! I can't wait for Javy to be gone... I didn't want to say anything at the time (positive thinking to the test) but I never was happy when we signed him as a free agent and could see this playing out the way it has. At least I was never surprised

The idea that any contract was weighing down a multi-billion dollar organization is exactly the mindset the owners want people to have as they go into upcoming labor negotiations. Still, for discussion sake, I will defend the Cabrera contract. Never liked him as an individual, but that bat played, and at the time everyone knew what the end of that contract would look like. The team was shooting for a title and if they had won one it would have been easier to swallow. It's revisionist history if people think otherwise. People were more than okay with that deal.

Javy was a different story. That created a bi-polar fanbase. Some loved it even though the signs were there from his days in New York. Others of us hated it but were hoping to be proved wrong. Sucks that we were right.

I think the Tigers dodged a bullet with Bregman. I wanted him here until the number got way out of hand. Ultimately, his swing profile doesn't fit Comerica and he made the right move for his career to go to Boston where he can play wall ball for 81 games a year. Once again though, even though I figured his offensive numbers would go down they would still be better than anything we would trot out there internally. Also, don't forget that Bregman can field the position so it would have been a net gain for the right price.

Super happy for the spring Tork and Mize are having because without any depth whatsoever offensively, a productive Tork will all of a sudden be very key. Lets hope he keeps it up. With Mize, same idea. Somebody will get hurt and even though pitching depth is a strength of this team you can never have enough. That adage is true.

Miggy was a good contract. The end was just a cost of doing business.

Javey was a panic move. That was a year bursting with free-agent shortstop talent. Detroit was in desperate need and found themselves staring at the chance of getting no one or Javey - they panicked.
