We are in Rochester to play the Roosters a 4 game series through the weekend and finish our season series with them, which will take us to the All-Star break. They won a pair of games in Indianapolis on Monday and Tuesday. We won 3 of 4 games against them in Jacksonville, May 30 - June 2. They are 6th in scoring with 4.24 runs per game (Jacksonville is #7 with 4.18). They have scored 1 more run that we have, but we have played 1 more game than they have. They are 4th in fewest runs allowed with 3.49 per game (Jacksonville is #2 with 3.40). They lead the MLB with 12 shutouts. We have only had 5. There are only 3 teams with fewer than us: Charlotte and Memphis with 4 apiece and Indianapolis, who has not had one yet. The Roosters run differential is +62, 4th best in the MLB, and ours is +65, 3rd best.

Jacksonville Jays (51-33 .607 2 GA in 1st place in the Southern Division) at
Rochester Roosters (47-36 .566 1 GB in 2nd place in the Northern Division)

JAX: Del Warwick (30-L) (7-10 4.38 ERA 111 IP, 128 H, 14 HR, 23 BB, 65 SO) Gold Glove(02)
ROCH: Steve Weston (29-L) (8-4 3.08 ERA 125.2 IP, 109 H, 13 HR, 33 BB, 106 SO) Silver Slugger(02)/All-Star(2: 01-02)

Warwick gave up 1 run on 4 hits and 3 walks with 4 strikeouts in 8 innings last time out in a win at Memphis.

Weston is their #1 starter. He is 2nd in the MLB in SO and has finished 2nd or 3rd in every season. We beat him in May, scoring 3 runs on 6 hits, 1 home run and 1 walk with 5 strikeouts in 6 innings. That was the first time we had ever beaten him.

Top of the First
Charlie Faber grounds out to 2nd. Tony Weninger strikes out... T.R. Hunter swings at the first pitch and grounds out to 2nd...

Bottom of the First
Buddy Hendricks strikes out! Brian Bowden grounds out to 2nd. Glen Lewis, the ex-Jay Rookie of the Year, grounds out to 1st, unassisted! 1-2-3!

We got our first base runner in the 3rd (walk) and also our first GDP....

Bottom of the Fifth
The Roosters get their first hit of the game when Gary Russell hits a 1-out triple to right center... Mark Scott swings at a 3-2 pitch and pops out to short! We walk Jim Phillips intentionally to pitch to the pitcher, but P Steve Weston is a career .280 hitter... He lines the first pitch to center for a hit and Russell scores and Phillips beats the throw to 3rd.... 1 to 0, Roosters. Buddy Hendricks lines their 3rd hit of the game and inning to center and Phillips, the intentional walk scores... 2 to 0, Roosters.

Through 6 innings, we have 2 hits and 2 GDP, not the best ratio in the world....

Top of the Seventh
With 2 outs, Dickie Stemen and Cal Doty hit back to back doubles! 2 to 1, Roosters. They do not walk Don Kern, as they did earlier, and he pops one up to left, but Ron LeMaster muffs it for a 2 base error and Doty scores! Tie Game: 2 to 2!

The Bullpen gets up. We walk Glen Lewis intentionally and Tom Walker unintentionally to load the bases up with 2 outs.... Call to the Bullpen: All-Star Albert Davies (28-L). Ron LeMaster beats out an infield hit and Bowden scores... 3 to 2, Roosters.

Top of the Ninth
New Pitcher: Phil Engel (30-R), their closer, who is 1-3 with 13 SV and a 4.25 ERA in 53 IP. Only 4 HR and a 1.23 WHIP, though. 5-6-7 up for us. Tom McDowell takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4! PH Mike Volkman (37-L) grounds into a force at 2nd, 4-6. Pinch-runner: Bart Daw (33-R). Cal Doty grounds out to 2nd and Daw moves up... PH Bob Hutson (22-L) is sent up. We are hoping they will walk him to get to the pitcher's spot and then we can send up Fernando Tello. But they do not walk him and he sends a 2-0 pitch to deep right center, but not deep enough...

Lost - 3 to 2

We had 5 whole hits and made 1 error
Rochester had 6 hits and made 1 error

Del Warwick went 6 innings, allowed 2 runs, 3 hits, 2 walks (1 INT) and struck out 3. He balked.

Won - 10 to 4

We had 17 hits and made 1 error
Rochester had 7 hits (all singles) and made 2 errors

Ernesto Noyola (W 7-1) went 7.1 innings, allowed 4 runs (2 earned), 7 hits, 2 walks, 1 HBP and struck out 3. 120 pitches. At bat, he had 2 hits, scored 2 runs and had 2 RBI.

Larry Thornton (L 13-3) went 3.2 innings, gave us 6 runs (5 earned), 9 hits, 1 home run, 1 walk and struck out 4. 87 pitches.

3B Charlie Faber had a hit in his only at bat. PR/3B Bart Daw had 2 hits, scored a run and had an RBI. 2B Tony Weninger hit his 2nd home run as a Jay and his 4th overall on the season, drew a walk, scored 2 runs and had 3 RBI. SS T.R. CF Dickie Stemen had 2 hits with a double, scored 2 runs and had an RBI. LF Cal Doty had 2 hits, stole a base and scored a run.

The Roosters announced that LF Ron LeMaster had mild shoulder inflammation and the expected it to bother him for 4 or 5 days. P Marcelino de la Rosa, also injured during the game and already suffering from a mild hamstring strain, had back stiffness. They expected that to be gone by tomorrow, but the hammy would linger for a few more days.

Trudy's report on Charlie Faber is a strained rib cage muscle that she figures to take a full month to go away. She says he can still play with it, but he is not all that great at full health, so we will put him on the DL.

Fun fact: I was looking over the archives, reminiscing about those wonderful days in 2001 when we lost 108 games, and found a few interesting tidbits. Who scored the first run ever in a Jays game? It was Charlie Faber, as a member of the Richmond Robins! Also, P Del Warwick's first ever win was against the Jays as a member of these Rochester Roosters.

We finish the season series with Rochester 4-4.
Same as we did last season.

We scored 10 runs on Friday off their best pitcher and 3 total runs in the other 3 games....

Tommy Keyser (L 3-3) went 7 innings, allowed 3 runs (1 earned), 7 hits, 1 walk and struck out 2. At bat, he had a hit.
RHP Robbie Hopley did not retire a batter and allowed 1 run, 2 hits and 1 walk.
RHP Bob Craig went 1 scoreless inning (with 1 inherited runner scoring) and walked 1. He threw a WP.

Ralph Williams (W 5-8) pitched 9 shutout innings (CG), gave us 6 hits, 2 walks and struck out 5. 116 pitches. At bat, he had 2 hits.

2B Tony Weninger hit a double and drew a walk. C Don Kern hit a double.

Around the League: The All-Star rosters were announced today and 3 Jays were voted to start the game, the same three as last year: P Jim Baucom, CF Cal Doty and RF Ray McDonald. Baucom obviously will not participate, but he gets credit for being an All-Star at least! No other Jays are going this season and I think RP Bill Grant was robbed.

Two ex-Jays are going: RF Glen Lewis of Rochester, for the 4th straight season, and RP Justin Reddick of Indianapolis, who we dumped on them this Winter...

Also, tomorrow is Roger Davis' 30th birthday.

Top of the First
Jorge Moreida swings at the first pitch and beats out an infield hit... Bob Cline bloops a hit to center... Just to remind everyone: this is the worst offense in the MLB... Gabriel Beltran grounds a 2-2 pitch to left for a hit and Moreida scores... 1 to 0, Explorers. Robert Duenas swings at a 3-2 pitch and flies out to deep center and we finally have an out. Floyd Shawn flies out to left. Marc Barksdale, the hero of yesterday's game, takes a 3-2 pitch for strike three!

Bottom of the First

Tony Weninger beats out an infield hit! Cal Doty grounds a 2-2 pitch to center for a hit and Weninger goes to 3rd! Doty steals 2nd! Fernando Tello, robbed of the opportunity to ground into a double play, decides, instead, to hit the ball over the wall in right center! Way over the wall! 515 ft! 3 to 1, Jays! Ray McDonald strikes out... Jack Washburn grounds a 2-2 pitch over the 1st base bag for a double! Tom McDowell grounds out to 3rd. T.R. Hunter swings at the first pitch and pops out to 2nd.

We load the bases up with 2 outs in the bottom of the 2nd for our cleanup hitter, but he does no cleaning and grounds out to short...

Top of the Fifth
With 2 outs, Bob Cline hits a 3-2 pitch over the wall in left for a home run... 3 to 2, Jays.

Bottom of the Fifth
With 1 out, Tom McDowell takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. T.R. Hunter grounds into a force at 2nd, 5-4. Bob Hutson doubles to left center and Hunter scores! 4 to 2, Jays!

Top of the Seventh
Jose Madrid walks on 4 pitches... The Bullpen gets up. PH Tim Brantley (31-L), the former All-Star, who is batting .152 with 1 HR and 3 RBI in 46 AB this year and who struck out yesterday, triples to center and Madrid scores... 4 to 3, Jays. Jorge Moreida lines a hit to left and Brantley scores... Tie Game: 4 to 4. Call to the Bullpen: All-Star Albert Davies (28-L). Bob Cline, who hit a home run last time up, bunts the runner to 2nd. We walk Gabriel Beltran intentionally.... Moreida steals 3rd... Robert Duenas grounds a hit to right and Moreida scores and Beltran goes to 3rd.... 5 to 4, Explorers. Did I mention that this is the worst offense in the MLB? Floyd Shawn strikes out looking. Marc Barksdale grounds out to 2nd.

Bottom of the Seventh
New Pitcher: Bill Chappell (25-R), a rookie, who is 1-1 with 1 SV and a 3.58 ERA in 37.2 IP. 23 BB. With 1 out, Jack Washburn hits a home run to right! Tie Game: 5 to 5!

Top of the Eighth
Joe Tirey doubles to left center... The Bullpen hops back up. A wild pitch sends Tirey to 3rd... Jose Madrid draws a walk... PH Miguel Andrade (29-L), who is batting .230 with 3 HR and 14 RBI in 135 AB, strikes out! Jorge Moreida swings at a 3-2 pitch and pops out to 2nd! Call to the Bullpen: Bob Craig (27-R), hopefully to face only 1 batter... Madrid steals 2nd. Bob Cline pops out to 2nd!

Top of the Ninth
New Pitcher: 2-time All-Star Bill Grant (34-L), who should have been a 3-time All-Star this year. Danny Rosas (26-L) is in to play left in a double switch. 3-4-5 up for the Explorers. Gabriel Beltran strikes out looking! Robert Duenas lines a 3-0 pitch to left for a hit... The Bullpen gets up. Floyd Shawn strikes out! Mark Barksdale pops one up to shallow center that looks like trouble, but Cal Doty makes a running catch!

Bottom of the Ninth
On the Hill: Mike McGillicuddy (25-R), another rookie, after a scoreless 8th. 4-5-6 up for us. Ray McDonald, 0 for 4 today and 2 for his last 14, lines a double to the left field corner! That is his 20th double of the season! They walk Jack Washburn intentionally. I would not mind a double steal here.... But we do not run and Tom McDowell flies out to deep right and McDonald tags up and goes to 3rd. Can we get a runner in from 3rd with less than 2 outs? No.... T.R. Hunter lines out to the pitcher... Bob Hutson grounds one to the hole on the right side.... 2B Jose Madrid reaches it, just, but Hutson beats the throw to 1st for an infield hit and McDonald scores and THIS Ball Game Belongs to the Jays!

P Danny Coreano has not healed up in time to make the start today, so we put him on the DL, retroactively, and called up Dave Buchalter (27-R) to make the start. He is 0-1 with a 7.62 ERA in 13 IP for the Jays with 10 walks allowed this season, but he is the only starting pitcher pitching decently for Daytona Beach (A). He is 6-4 with a 2.69 ERA in 12 starts for them and is only walking 2.8 per 9 innings with 7.1 strikeouts. The next best ERA in the Admirals' rotation is 4.46....

We are in Hartford to play the Whalers a 4 game series and finish up our season series with them. They lost 3 of 4 here to Orlando over the weekend.
