I admit that they look odd but isn't this simply an extension of the idea with a cupped bat end? Move the weight toward the sweet spot while maintaining the length?

Great, now he'll pitch to a 1.50 ERA and close out all games against the Metsies this year...

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Old time players PREFERRED think handled bats..better chance to foul off a pitch. Over time, whip-thin handles, and a fat barrel allowed for bat speed to increase. Strikeouts are up, home run rates are up. These torpedo bats put more mass near the trademark. Does it improve the player's ability to hit home runs? They THINK it does...and that may be enough. |

Interesting. Ruth was 32 during the 1927 season. Judge is also 32 this season. Ruth hit 358 home runs from 1927 through 1935, when he turned 40. He hit 60 in '27 and 54 in '28 but never more than 50 after that. Can Judge match his pace? Ruth was apparently healthy for at least the ensuing eight seasons, judging by his plate appearances. Judge would need to avoid serious injuries the rest of the way to have any chance.

Hey, Mr. Stearns! Look at this stunning resume of short-term success! Tempting, isn't it?

Assume his contract, throw in a couple of high-level prospects, and he's yours!

Albeit with a nod to Westheim and the time differential, I am getting used to these day games! No conflicts with Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune, not to mention cooking and dress shows. I'm sort of hoping this cold snap continues for a little while longer.

Sad: I just heard that a couple of ex-MLBers were killed in the collapse of the roof of a night club in the Dominican Republic: Tony Blanco and Octavio Dotel. Blanco was a coffee-cup player but Dotel was around for 15 seasons (13 teams!), including one with the Mets and one with the Yankees. Also killed was the sister of Nelson Cruz. She was the governor of the Dominican Republic's Monte Cristi Province.

I don't know how long it will last but Paul Goldschmidt is having a renaissance with the Yankees. I just saw him reach down and poke a pitch into right field that was six inches above the plate.

In other news, Marcus Stroman did nothing with the opportunity he got to start after Gerrit Cole's injury, having complained in spring training that he was a starter, not a reliever. He bombed again yesterday and the Yankees suspiciously put him on the IL with "knee inflammation." Max Fried is the only Yankees starter who is doing anything so far this season.

Stroman must be a top tier clubhouse cancer. His Mets tenure was rather... tumultous.

Aaron Judge commits to World Baseball Classic: Yankees slugger to serve as captain for Team USA in 2026

Okay, fine, but ONLY IF no games are scheduled in Dodger Stadium. It's bad enough we have to go there in May. ![]() "Uh, Aaron?" "Yes, Aaron?" "About the Dodgers. You remember that nasty ledge along the right field fence they got there? Where you stubbed your toe?" "Ouch. Sure do, coach." "Well, that's why you're DH'ing that whole series." "Gee, Boonie, L.A. is hosting the WBC through the quarterfinals [actually not true] and they don't have the DH [also not true]." "Then you're not going, Judgie. No, no. No arguments! We need that toe of yours, and the other one, in working order."

Hmmm. If I'm Cashman, I crop the right side of that image a little more to the left for my trade proposal presentation.

The weak link. This article just mentioned Max Fried as "the bright spot in an otherwise dim situation."

Heh, at first glance I thought that third column was plain ERA. Not. If 100 ERA+ is average, the Yankees are in trouble. They could use Clarke Schmidt, and that is saying something.

Carrasco's cookie had crumbled years ago with the Mets, what were the Yanks thinking?

Yes, yes, over here we're still valiantly trying to get Clay Holmes through five innings...
