Bush came through big time!

Our offense has gone down the toilet of late. It took the league 43 games before they registered 6 games scores by their starting pitchers against us of 70 or higher. They have 6 in the last 8 games. OF course we have faced some awesome pitchers over that span, but we faced those same pitchers earlier in the year. We have not drawn a walk in 3 straight games and have a string of 11 in a row where we have not drawn more than 1.

Bush allowed 4 hits, 1 walk (!!) and struck out 4.

Turner allowed 4 hits, no walks and struck out 4.

We did not make an error and Troy made 2.

2B Jocko Cole (23-6.1) hit a triple and scored a run.

We now have 3 days to get back to Detroit to start a home-stand. I think I will swing by Syracuse and have a look at the team there. See if Zenas Keough (24-4.5) looks better than Tommy Shearin (27-5.7), although I think a pitcher of milk would look better than the Shearin right now.

Liberty League:

He has been heard talking to himself of late, muttering unintelligible gibberish punctuated by an occasional clear curse word. 3B Frank Young (34-7.6) had 2 hits and a walk, stole a base and scored 2 runs.

Burton allowed 7 hits, no walks and struck out 4. Jim Granier (30-5.7) had 3 hits with 2 doubles, scored a run and had an RBI.

I got to watch Zenas Keough (24-4.5) pitch and he tossed a shutout. He has won 7 in a row and 9 of his last 10, so I am taking him to Detroit with me and putting Tommy Shearin (27-5.7) on a train back to Syracuse when I get there. At worst, Keough will just get hammered the same as Shearin has.

We begin an 8 game home-stand with 4 games against manager Paul Richards (44-5.4) and his Spiders. We are 6-2 against Cleveland so far this year and we beat them 3 of 4 at their park the last time we met. They are 7th in the league in scoring with 4.3 runs per game (Detroit is down to 5th with 4.8). They are 6th in runs allowed with 5.1 per game (Detroit is still #1 with 3.9).

Home, sweet home! This was out 7th home win in a row. We are now 24-9 here and 26-18 on the road.

McLeod allowed 7 hits, 2 walks and struck out 5.

We had 12 hits and made 2 errors. Cleveland made 5.

RF Joe Kraus (28-7.9) had 3 hits with a double and a triple and a walk and scored 2 runs. CF Fred Bianco (26-6.9) had 2 hits, stole 3 bases, scored 2 runs and had an RBI. LF Ben Smith (26-6.7) had 2 hits and an RBI. 1B Jim Oman (24-5.8) had 2 hits with a 2-run home run. 3B Sam Boullion (25-4.8) hit an inside-the-park home run, scored twice and had 2 RBIs. It was his third round-tripper of the year.

For the Spiders, C Deacon Dubin (28-8.8) had 2 hits with his own inside-the-park home run (he actually hit his first) and had 2 RBIs.

Liberty League:
Washington (6) at Cincinnati (3): Lou Townley (23-3.4) (21-17) over John Stevens (28-8.2) (21-14). Townley allowed 7 hits, 1 walk and struck out 6. Stevens allowed 5 hits, 1 walk and struck out 8. At bat, he had 2 hits with a double and scored a run. I cannot tell you why Stevens lost: Washington made 6 errors and Cincinnati made 4. SS Otto Warfel (34-8.5) hit his 2nd home run of the year and had 2 RBIs.

Rochester (4) at Troy (5): Miah Turner (24-5.3) (19-17) over George Skinner (29-7.8) (1-1). The game was tied at 3 going in to the 9th. Rochester scored once in the top of the inning, but Troy scored twice in the bottom. Turner allowed 9 hits, no walks and struck out 6. At bat, he had a hit, 3 walks and scored a run. The winning run scored on a 2-out passed ball. RF Bert Gellis (24-5.5) had 2 hits with a double, stole a base, scored 2 runs and had an RBI. For Rochester, CF John Meredith (30-6.0) hit 3 doubles, scored a run and had 2 RBIs.

We had a season high 20 hits and made 3 errors. Cleveland made 5.

RF Joe Kraus (28-7.9) led off the game with an inside-the-park home run and ended up with 3 hits, his 50th stolen base of the year, 3 runs scored and 2 RBIs. CF Fred Bianco (26-6.9) had 3 hits, 2 stolen bases, scored 3 runs and had an RBI. 2B Jocko Cole (23-6.1) had 4 hits with 2 doubles and 4 RBIs. 1B Jim Oman (24-5.8) had 2 hits with a double and scored a run. C Evan Eckberg (29-3.5) had 3 hits, scored a run and had an RBI and threw out the only runner to try and swipe a base, but had 3 passed balls. Can't really fault him too much though, the way Bush's pitches were dancing around today. They were near unhittable and uncatchable. SS Sam Swanger (33-4.8) had 2 hits, stole a base, scored 2 runs and had an RBI.

Liberty League:
Washington (6) at Cincinnati (8): Lou Ellard (27-6.3) (13-16) over John Ritch (30-7.8) (6-19). Ellard allowed 7 hits, 3 walks and struck out 3. At bat, he hit 2 doubles and had an RBI. Ritch allowed 8 hits, 3 walks and struck out 5. At bat, he hit a double and had an RBI. He has lost 8 in a row and 14 of 16. 3B Frank Young (34-7.6) only had 1 hit, but scored twice and had 3 RBIs. For the Nationals, 2b Tom Anglin (32-5.6), in his 1st game back after missing a month due to injury, had to leave with a sore shoulder. The doctor has prescribed 5 to 7 days of rest.

New York (4) at Troy (9): Harry Lamb (30-6.4) (19-12) over John Allen (27-6.4) (13-16). Lamb allowed 9 hits, 4 walks and struck out 2. He has won 5 in a row and 7 of 8. 3B Sam Cowan (29-5.1) had 3 hits with 2 doubles and a walk, scored a run and had an RBI. SS Bill Lawson (28-6.9) had 2 hits with his 2nd home run of the year, scored twice and had 2 RBIs.

Yurky has won 4 of his last 5 starts after losing 6 of the 7 before that. RF Harry Cole (27-6.4) had 3 hits, stole 2 bases, scored 2 runs and had 2 RBIs. 1B Lou Knight (36-5.2) had 3 hits with a double and his 6th home run of the season, scored 2 runs and had 3 RBIs.

Lost - 5 to 3

We lost the game in the 5th inning. McLeod had not allowed a hit yet and he retired the 1st two batters of the inning. And then LF Bill Nichols (25-7.7) made their first hit a blast over the right field fence to put Cleveland up 1 to 0. McLeod seemed to get rattled and gave up back-to-back singles to the next 2 hitters and then SS Jesse Flanders (25-5.4) knocked another one over the right field fence to make it suddenly 4 to 0. I need to see about moving that fence back some. It is the easiest spot in any park in the Liberty League to hit one out, except over the left field fence in Cincinnati.

McLeod allowed 7 hits, 2 walks and struck out 7.

Kornfield allowed us 5 hits, 2 walks and struck out 7. Yesterday 20 hits, today only 5. At least we ended our streak of 13 straight games with only 1 or no walks.

We made 3 errors and Cleveland made 4.

CF Fred Bianco (26-6.9) had 2 hits with a triple, stole a base and scored 2 runs. 2B Jocko Cole (23-6.1) had 2 hits and stole a base.

Liberty League:

We were losing 2 to 1 and I sent up a couple of pinch-hitters in the bottom of the 8th, but we went down 1-2-3. And then P Zenas Keough (24-4.5) made his major league debut in the top of the 9th. He did the job, getting 2 ground-outs and a pop-out on 5 pitches. In the bottom of the 9th, CF Fred Bianco (26-6.9) led off with a single and 2B Jocko Cole (23-6.1) bunted him over to second. As I've said before, I'd rather see a fast guy like Bianco try to steal second without using an out to get him there and give us an extra chance to knock him in, but what can you do. Ballplayers have their own ideas. LF Ben Smith (26-6.7) then hit a groundball deep in the hole towards second and reached on an infield hit and we had runners at first and third with 1 out. 1B Jim Oman (24-5.8) then hit own in almost the same spot that Smith did and their second baseman threw the ball away and Bianco scored and we had runners at second and third and one out. I guess the best days were had by 3B Frank Young (34-7.6) who had 3 hits with a double and his 4th home run of the year, stole a base and scored 3 times and Washington's CF Asa Holtz (25-6.7) who had 4 hits with a home run, scored twice and had 4 RBIs.

He has won 6 of his last 7. Childs has lost 4 in a row. 3B Sam Cowan (29-5.1) had 2 hits with his 3rd home run of the year, scored 2 runs and had 3 RBIs. He then tried to steal third on a catcher who had already thrown out the only 2 guys to try in the game and had thrown out 4 of 5 since being called up from A ball, but the gamble paid off as the throw to third ended up in left field and the game was over when Warren crossed the plate.

At bat, he hit a double and drew a walk, scored a run and had and RBI. Washam allowed 5 hits, 2 walks and struck out 4. 2B Felix Hill (26-4.2) had 2 hits and an RBI.

Chicago (10) at Kansas City (7): Pete Rinehart (26-6.2) (18-21) over Al McClaughry (21-5.6) (12-8). 17 errors were the feature of this ugly game. Rookie SS Bob Robertson (22-4.1) only had 1 hit, but stole a base and scored 3 runs. He also did not make an error.


Down in the Eastern League (A), P Ted Ryther (31-4.3), who led the GNA in ERA last season for Providence, but only pitched half the season due to a severe elbow injury, is trying to work his way back into pitching shape with the Wilmington Blue Hens. So far, he is finding the going rough as he is 0-6 with a 3.38 ERA. He was among the league leaders in fewest walks allowed last year with 1.1 per 9 innings, but is so far issuing 3.2 free passes per 9 innings this season.

We begin a 4 game series against manager Paul Richards (44-5.4) and his Spiders today. This will be the last we see of them this season. So far, we are 9-3 against them. We beat them 3 of 4 in Detroit the series before last. They are 7th in the Liberty League in scoring with 4.3 runs per game (Detroit is 5th with 4.8 and dropping fast). They are 6th in runs allowed with 5.2 per game (Detroit is still #1 at 3.9). Cleveland's League Park is not a bad place to hit as long as you don;t expect to hit it over the fence. It's the toughest place to hit a home run in the Liberty League.

Kornfield gave us 5 hits, 5 walks and struck out 8.

2B Jocko Cole (23-6.1) hit a double and a triple and scored a run. 3B Harry Robinson (26-3.3) hit a double and scored a run, but made 2 errors. SS Sam Swanger (33-4.8) twisted his ankle and will be gimpy for a few days.

Manager/1b Pete Bucolo (37-4.1) had 2 hits and scored 2 runs. The Jingoes' losing streak reaches 15 games with no end in sight.

Cincinnati (3) at Washington (1): John Stevens (28-8.2) (24-15) over Lou Townley (23-3.4) (22-21). Stevens allowed 2 hits, no walks and struck out 7. At bat, he had a hit. Townley allowed 7 hits, no walks and struck out 8. The Reds scored all of their runs in the 2nd inning.

Bush allowed 4 hits, 3 walks and struck out 4. At bat, he had 2 hits with a double and an RBI. This was his 3rd shutout in only 15 starts. He had 3 for Syracuse before being called up.

Ludwig gave us 8 hits, 2 walks and struck out 4.

We made 1 error and Cleveland made 3.

CF Fred Bianco (26-6.9) had 2 hits and stole a base. 2B Jocko Cole (23-6.1) had 2 hits and scored a run. Our offense has become amazingly consistent at a very mediocre level. In 6 of the last 8 games we have scored exactly 3 runs. In the 2 games we did not, we scored 2 and 4 respectively. I think it is time for a shakeup.

Liberty League:
Cincinnati (3) at Washington (4) in 11 innings: Bill Crawford (27-7.2) (1-0) in his major league debut over John Stevens (28-8.2) (24-16). In 11 innings, Crawford allowed 10 hits, no walks and struck out 6. At bat, he had 2 hit, 2 walks, scored a run and had an RBI that tied the game in the bottom of the 9th. He would have made his debut a lot sooner, but he missed half of last season with a pinched nerve and came up with elbow problems in Spring Training. He certainly looks healthy now and along with Lou Townley (23-3.4) gives the Nationals as good a 1-2 pitching punch as anybody. Stevens allowed 7 hits, 4 walks and struck out 5. 3 errors ended the game in the bottom of the 11th. For the Reds, 2B Jumbo Lynn (25-3.8) strained a rib cage muscle and will miss about 3 weeks.

Troy (0) at New York (5): John Allen (27-6.4) (16-16) over Miah Turner (24-5.3) (21-19). Allen allowed 4 hits, 2 walks and struck out 1. Allen now has 2 shutouts on the season. He has won 6 of his last 7 and the Gothams have won 8 in a row. Turner allowed 12 hits, no walks and struck out 5. CF Lorenzo Chappell (25-5.2) had 3 hits with his 3rd home run of the season and 3rd in the last 2 games. He scored 2 runs and had 2 RBIs. 3B John Reynolds (29-4.5) hit 2 triples, scored a run and had 2 RBIs.
