NOTABLE OMISSIONS: Home run leader Jonny Gomes of Milwaukee, despite 22 shots, is snubbed. His .237 average and 47 RBIs worked against him. Two-time reigning Outstanding Pitcher Bob Veale (12-2, 2.42) is an inexplicable exclusion. Milwaukee's Moose Haas (6-2, 2.98) would have been a better choice than a few of the relievers chosen.

NOTABLE OMISSIONS: As with Gomes in the Northern League, current homer leader Willie Stargell (.283-18-56) was left off the roster, victimized by Orlando needing a representative and Cap Anson taking the slot. At the age of 30, former #1 pick Warren Spahn seems to be putting it together, going 6-2 with a 2.49 ERA - good for second in the league - for a horrible Las Vegas squad.

EASTERN DIVISION

The Riders, coming off their first division title have come back to overtake prior leaders New York and Louisville and claim the division lead at the midway point. The pickup of Bob Horner has been everything the Riders hoped it would be, giving them a power threat to join last year's homer champion, Adam Dunn. But Dunn has struggled early on this season, batting .220 with 11 homers. Tommy John and Jim Palmer have been strong, as has Red Munger, whose numbers are inflated after he's been blistered in two starts this month. The team, which has only 29 steals on the year, last in the Northern League, could really use a legitimate leadoff man by the deadline. Coming out of the break, the Riders play 10 of 13 on the road against defending champ New Orleans, baseball's best team in San Antonio, and division rival New York, a stretch that will tell a lot about where they're heading.

Evolution, redemption or plain old luck. Whatever you want to call it, the Louisville Racers, criticized for doing little this offseason, are right in the thick of things here in the East. Rico Petrocelli, who popped 22 homers and drove in 70 but hit only .217 last season has been tremendous, leading the club with 17 homers at the break and hitting .267 with 58 RBI. Joe Jackson, who broke his wrist last season and then broke his arm in his second game back, has scalded the ball in the first half, a .913 OPS magnified by his 31:14 BB to K ratio. Mickey Harris, who spent five seasons in bullpen duty for Charlotte and Alabama, was given the rotation spot last season and has grown into this year, leading the team with 10 wins and earning an all-star appearance. Mickey Lolich, who put up a 5.4 ERA after being acquired from New Orleans last season, has 8 wins and a 2.85 ERA now. And former ace Roy Oswalt has taken to the setup role, posting a 1.80 ERA in the early going. And that's to say nothing about Gene Richards, who leads the league in hitting. Can it all keep up? Only time will tell, but Louisville has definitely been a surprise so far.

The Charlotte Cougars are attempting to hang in despite an offense ranked 8th that is suffering from the loss of Paul Hines last month to a separated shoulder. Hines (.305-12-44) being out has left David Wright to carry the load, which he's done fairly well - well enough to earn a 3-year extension. But poor starts from free agent signee Mike Donlin and first baseman Adrian Gonzalez have left the Cougars scrounging. The top three starters of Jake Peavy, John Candelaria and Ralph Branca have been solid, but the team is really hoping Rick Sutcliffe, an 18-game winner a year ago, will right the ship.

After an 18-6 April, the remade New York Heroes have gone 27-37. While Albert Pujols has been solid, fellow offseason pickups Abner Dalrymple, Jack Rowe, Fred Tenney and Willie Keeler have been poor or played little. Joe Morgan missed six weeks with a broken foot, which surely hasn't helped, and the team handed Tony Perez the third base job in May. He's heated up and the team hopes that Morgan and Perez will help solidify things a bit. The pitching, for its part, has held up its end of the bargain. They are second in the Northern League in ERA (4.01) and dealt Jorge Cantu for Dick Radatz a week ago after management grew tired of John Hiller's misleading 16 saves. Radatz will be set up by Willie Hernandez, creating a potentially dominant back end for the Heroes in the second half.

A .500 May was bookended by a 9-16 April and an 8-19 May, putting the Ringers in their current predicament. John Anderson has been his usual solid self, but every other bright spot has a dark lining. Jim Ray Hart has 10 homers and 50 RBI, but is hitting .215. Rookie Turkey Stearnes is on pace for 100 RBI but is showing little patience at the plate, drawing only 10 walks. Of course, the biggest hindrance has been free agent signing Bill Byrd, whose decline that began last season in New York has continued here. Ed Walsh, who is on pace to lose 20 games, has actually pitched much better than his record indicates: in his last five losses, the Ringers have scored 0, 2, 2, 1 and 0 runs.

WESTERN DIVISION

The defending Northern League champions have overcome a terrible job on offense - though partly affected by injuries to Art Fletcher, Justin Morneau and rookie Ted Kluszewski. With a next-to-worst .315 OBP, the Stingers are finding it hard to scratch out runs. But their league-best pitching staff has kept them afloat. That will be tested for the next two months, though, as ace Bob Veale has been shelved with an elbow injury. Combined with Rube Marquard, the pair has gone 24-4 in the first half. But Veale's injury, while considered a strain of the elbow ligament and not a tear, will keep him out until mid-August at the earliest. Despite ERAs better than the league average, #2-#4 starters Bob Shawkey, Carlos Marmol and Dave Stewart have gone 14-22. The offense will need to pick it up to give some breathing room while Veale recovers. George Mullin will take his spot in the rotation for now.

The heart of the order has been outstanding. After an 11-12 April, the Chicago Hitmen have gone 37-26. Babe Ruth and Charley Jones each missed a month to injury, but in the end the duo, joined by Roger Connor, make baseball's toughest 3-4-5. Frank Baker and Ed Delahanty have set the table brilliantly and now that the pitching is coming together the Hitmen seem poised for a run. The quartet of Ben Sanders, Howie Pollet, Len Barker and Denny LeMaster all have sub-4.00 ERAs, and after a rough start and a temporary cut from the rotation, Johan Santana has posted a 1.93 ERA over the last six weeks.

Their draft was criticized again, their direction thought lacking. But, while the Milwaukee Bangers aren't there yet, the team has shown great improvement and sits five games above .500 at the break. They still own baseball's worst offense, but there is promise there. Jonny Gomes leads baseball in homers, and rookie Al Rosen has advanced faster than critics anticipated - fast enough that the team traded incumbent third baseman Joe Crede to Memphis for Tank Carr, who adds some pop at first base. The real promise, though, comes from the pitching staff, which ranks second in the Northern League. Eddie Cicotte, Smokey Joe Williams and Moose Haas - who was just given a 3-year contract - have each gotten stronger as the season has gone on. The only struggler is last year's #1 pick, John Montefusco, whose rotation slot is in question.

An 11-16 June and a 2-6 start to July have put the Indianapolis Engines back 10 games in the division. They are last in OPS and 8th in pitching, and the decisions being made are confusing to many. The outfield grouping of Stan Musial, Larry Doby, Jimmy Wynn and Bill Hinchman is bouncing in and out of the lineup. Inexplicably, Musial is again not being given the everyday job, despite batting .318 with an .820 OPS over the last two seasons. They then, in early June, traded Harry Davis - who still leads the team in homers with 11 despite being gone a month and is second in RBI - for Scott Sanderson, who was quickly booted from the rotation to the bullpen. Simply, it's a peculiar season in Indianapolis, and skipper Frank Selee is on notice.

They are hitting a whopping .296 as a team and, despite a league-low 46 homers, are second in runs in the Northern League. They are sending out five .300 hitters (Cleon Jones, Ken Griffey, George Stone, Larry Doyle and Eddie Collins) and Frank Chance is hitting .288. The problem is pitching, which has allowed the most runs in the PBL. Rube Waddell, so counted on to lead the staff again this season, is 3-9 with a 4.83 ERA, and seems to be done as a top-flight pitching in the league. The team just traded Jack Lapp to Philadelphia for Jay Hughes, who won 18 games for Wichita's championship team back in the inaugural season of 2009.

They scored 703 runs last season. This year, they've already scored 472, the most in the PBL. And with that, the surprising St. Louis Tides are in first place. Tris Speaker and Fred Lynn have undoubtedly led the way here - and lead baseball in average and RBIs, respectively - and now Rusty Staub is healthy after missing 7 weeks with a knee injury. They are also third in pitching, getting strong starts from Tommy Bond, CC Sabathia and Frank Smith. The ace, though, was Charley Radbourn (8-4, 3.20), who was just dealt to Orlando for George Gore, a solid player having a miserable season and who the Tides seemingly have no use for.

They're in second place and playing well, but the story of the first half for the Memphis Strummers is the trade of their centerpiece - and the best player in the young history of the PBL - Oscar Charleston. The centerfielder and three-time Outstanding Hitter was batting .279 with 4 homers and 37 RBI in early June when the deal was done. That .279 mark was Charleston's last season as well, but despite his driving in 100 runs for the fifth time is six seasons, Memphis feared a decline was beginning. The early part of this season did nothing to change that. John Lackey was 7-3 with a 3.38 ERA, and Memphis felt Lackey would offer more of what they needed. He's gone 1-3 with a 5.31 ERA in six starts with Memphis.

The defending champs are struggling, and it's the pitching that's doing them in. Dontrelle Willis, given a league-record 7-year deal during spring training, began terribly but righted the ship in June. Mark Prior has looked lost in stumbling to a five and a half ERA and a pace for 20 losses. And Andy Sonnanstine and Jouett Meekin have struggled. The offense, middle of the pack right now, has gotten a big boost from Jake Beckley, who returned after missing two months with a broken hand and hasn't missed a beat, batting .300 for what would be the 8th straight season should it hold up. Dwayne Murphy and Pete Rose have taken steps backward thus far.

Their main free agent pickup, closer Sam Jones, ruptured a disc in his back and is done for the season. Bake McBride took a step toward breaking out, hitting .300, until getting beaned and suffering serious post-concussion effects that have placed his season in jeopardy. And Pete Alexander has battled arm trouble all year but is trying to slog through. Such is the plight of the Orlando Orcas, who are getting off years from everyone not named Cap Anson, though it seems Sam Crawford is coming around. After 12 losses, Denny McLain lost his rotation spot to the incoming Charley Radbourn.

If you don't have something nice to say...the Alabama Airmen have the next to worst offense in the Southern League and the worst pitching. Sid Gordon and Del Ennis are bright spots, and Bill Madlock and Ray Knight seem to be on their way to becoming solid contributors. But there's no anchor here, on the mound or at the plate. And that's why Alabama once again finds itself in the cellar. The guy who could be that guy, George Brett, has struggled after coming back from a concussion suffered in spring training. With two long-term injuries derailing his rookie season last year, Brett could be on his way to a reputation as injury-prone...which would only fit how things go for the Airmen.

WEST DIVISION

This was predicted to be a horrible season for the Sheriffs, who took major hits in free agency this offseason. Instead, Red Ames and Luis Tiant have taken steps forward to more than mitigate the loss of Joe McGinnity, and rookie Jud Wilson has joined the surprising Jason Tyner as sparkplugs atop the order to more than compensate for the loss of Rafael Furcal. The TEAM ERA is 3.35, which is better than great. Rookie Grady Hatton has been phenomenal at second base, leading the team in average and RBIs. Ted Trent hasn't been his usual self but has still been excellent. But the best story of the season has to be Noodles Hahn...18-8, 2.53 in the inaugural season of 2009 with a mind-blowing 383 strikeouts, Hahn went 13-15, 5.17 in 2010 with a K rate nearly halved. He was booted from the rotation the next year, stayed on the reserve squad for most of 2011 and all of 2012, and put up a 6.91 ERA in relief in 2013, only to be back on the reserve squad for all of 2014 and made all of four appearances in 2015. He's back this season, 4-4 with a respectable 3.73 ERA and has some life on his fastball again. He was 20 in that first season, so only 27 now, Hahn is hoping to rebuild his career.

You have give the Idols credit: they know how to replace a fallen star. When Ty Cobb went out after tearing his meniscus - on May, during a 5-for-5 effort - the Idols went out and replaced him by dealing for the best player in PBL history, Oscar Charleston. Consider now, the lineup once Cobb comes back, presumed to be in September. Rookie Yogi Berra has started to heat up, Luke Easter and Dan Brouthers have been stellar, and Dave Winfield is beginning to develop into a force. Eddie Murray is finally getting a chance, playing against lefties, who he is crushing to a 1.052 OPS. They are 8th in ERA, though, and the deal of John Lackey to get Charleston, while flashy, didn't address a need and only exacerbated a weakness. The deadline could be interesting for Los Angeles, which has a surplus of offense.

They were 28-24 on June 1 before the injuries came. Jimmy Williams broke his elbow, Mike Lamb broke his ankle, Bill Campbell was diagnosed with bone chips in his elbow, and Ken Holtzman went down with a torn rotator. All of these will keep these guys sidelined into August if not the for the rest of the season. Ginger Beaumont has proved a strong free agent pickup, but the disappointment of Honus Wagner's career continues. Good for a while, he was never great, and now seems at 31 to be on his last legs. The belief in Oklahoma City is that the trio of Walter Johnson, Steve Carlton and Ron Guidry will anchor this staff for a decade. They've been solid, but right now the best pitcher is Britt Burns.

Warren Spahn finally is living up to the hype that seemed lost when the Alabama Airmen inexplicably buried him on their reserve squad for two years. The first pick in the expansion draft by the Milwaukee Bangers, Spahn went out and lost 22 games, and two years later was traded to Vegas for Adam LaRoche. Now 30, Spahn seems to be putting it together. The bullpen and the emergence of Max Carey and Dave Parker have, along with Spahn, been the only bright spots in yet another dismal season in Las Vegas. Rookie Jackie Robinson struggled out of the gate, hitting .250, then got hurt. Dick Allen is suffering through injuries yet again. And ace Christy Mathewson posted a 5.72 ERA before being shelved with shoulder problems. The team continues to make money, incredibly, but something has to start looking good in Vegas soon.

Whoever said pitching wins never met the Arizona Sandmen. They've allowed the fewest runs in the Southern League, but baseball's worst offense is holding them back. Last season, when the division as a whole was offensively inept, besides Los Angeles, they got away with it. But this offense is on pace to not even crack 650 runs, which is brutal. Dutch Leonard has been strong rebounding from last season's injury that ended what was shaping up to be a remarkable season. But he, Anibal Sanchez, Dan Casey, Justin Verlander and Mike LaCoss all have sub-3.85 ERAs. Sam Thompson has been good, but not his usual great self on offense. And Lip Pike has provided the pop they hoped for when signing him as a free agent, but little else, en route to a .188 average. Willie Wells, who tested free agency but ultimately came back to Arizona has continued his decline of last season.

Miracle Month Puts Brigade in Hunt

At the all-star break, the Wichita Brigade were 20 games below .500 at 34-54, 16 games out of first place and in last place in the Northern League West.

Now, after a 24-4 August that completed a two-month 39-15 run, the Brigade are where nobody expected them to be: two games out and within striking distance in the final month of the season.

The August charge was led by Pitcher of the Month Ubaldo Jimenez, who went 5-0 with a 1.85 ERA. But the pitching staff has done this surge despite still having allowed the most runs in the Northern League. Nonetheless, Jay Hughes and Johnny Schmitz joined Jimenez to lead the charge. And, after a rough July that was part of another down season for Rube Waddell, the Wichita icon went 5-0 with a 3.40 ERA during the August run. Add in Ricky Nolasco's own 5-0 month - with a 3.97 ERA - and the comeback story is told.

The Brigade took advantage of a two-month stretch that saw every other team in the division play sub-.500 ball. Their offense remains #2 in the North, and with five .300 hitters in the everyday lineup, the Brigade seem poised for a stretch run that would be the most remarkable comeback story in PBL history.

"There ain't a man in here who ever gave up," outfielder Cleon Jones (.306-11-84) said. "Another month of good ball is all we need."

That run begins as they go for the sweep in Milwaukee tonight before heading to Sacramento. They host the division leading Chicago Hitmen for a 3-game set to end the season...a series that could, incredibly, mean everything.

Only one race that's within 5 games, so that's what we'll follow for the final month. Can Wichita complete its amazing run?

Chicago 4, Sacramento 3 (13 innings): Roger Connor hit a solo shot in the first, and Babe Ruth hit a 2-run shot two batters later to put the Hitmen up 3-0 and spot starter Rich Gale made it stand up for seven innings. But the Stingers got two in the 8th and one in the 9th to tie it and send things to extras, where it stayed tied until Charley Jones - to that point 0-for-5 - hit a 1-out single to score pinch-runner Ron LeFlore and give the Hitmen the walkoff victory.

Wichita 4, Milwaukee 3: Cleon Jones and Larry Doyle homered early and Jonas Gaines, making his first start of the season, survived 8th inning homers from Tank Carr and Pete Hill as closer Chad Cordero hurled the 9th and the Brigade continued to roll.

New York 16, Chicago 10: The Hitmen got homers from Babe Ruth, Biz Mackey, Ed Delahanty and Milton Bradley but couldn't overcome a 3-for-3 6 RBI performance from Orlando Hudson, who hit his first homer of the season and tripled his RBI output in the wild matchup. Former Hitman Josh Beckett (13-8) was hit hard but got the win. Johan Santana (11-7, 4.93) was hit hard for the second straight game.

Sacramento 9, Wichita 2: In what could be a pivotal series in the chase down the stretch, the Stingers host the red-hot Brigade and cool them off in Game One. Harry Walker was the only Stingers starter without a hit, though he walked twice. Carlos Marmol (10-11, 3.95) got the win with 8 strong innings. Jay Hughes (9-13, 4.57) was knocked out in the third.

SEPT. 3, 2016

Chicago 4, New York 3: Babe Ruth broke a 3-3 tie with two outs in the bottom of the 12th, hitting his 20th homer, off loser Jack Taylor. Taylor, who fell to 5-9, had worked four innings of stellar relief prior to that, following Frank Killen. Bob Caruthers threw 147 pitches for a 12-inning complete game in his first appearance since July 26. Mike Jacobs homered for New York, while Charley Jones hit his 27th for Chicago.

Sacramento 5, Wichita 0: The Stingers got an unsurprising start from Rube Marquard (16-8, 2.78), who hurled a complete game shutout - and a surprising day at the plate from Joel Youngblood, who hit a pair of 2-run homers off loser Rube Waddell (9-11, 4.90).

SEPT. 4, 2016

Chicago 9, New York 4: The Hitmen complete a big sweep to kick off the stretch drive, going up 5-0 after two and getting a complete game from an unspectacular Ben Sanders (16-7, 3.23). Ed Delahanty and Frank Baker each drove in a pair for Chicago. A Jimmy Rollins error lead to four unearned runs in the 8th, ending New York's hopes at a comeback. Harry Krause (13-10, 3.10) took the loss.

Sacramento 1, Wichita 0: Alarm bells sounded after Bob Veale's return from the DL August 30. The Chicago Hitmen mauled him for six runs on five hits and four walks in 1 1/3 innings en route to a 9-8 Chicago win. Fear not, Stingers fans, as Veale (13-2, 2.65) threw 8 1/3 shutout innings of three-hit ball, needing only a fifth-inning Joel Youngblood RBI single to back him. Mark Mulder picked up his 15th save as the Brigade's wondrous run seems to have hit a roadblock.

SEPT. 5, 2016

Chicago 14, Indianapolis 1: The Hitmen look imposing right now, as their offense is firing on all cylinders. Charley Jones hit his 28th homer, and six players had at least two hits. Denny LeMaster (8-13, 3.75) threw eight innings of one-run ball.

Sacramento 9, Milwaukee 2: The Stingers are trying to keep up with Chicago, getting a four-hit, 3 RBI day from Don Buford and 2 RBI apiece from Harry Walker, Al Zarilla and Justin Morneau to back the complete game from Dave Stewart (9-14, 4.08). What started out promisingly for Milwaukee has turned in the second half, and while they remain well ahead of last season, their hope to catch the division has passed.

Louisville 9, Wichita 4: The Racers have played fantastic ball the last few weeks in opening up a 7-game lead in the Northern League East. That was bad news for Wichita, which is struggling. Ricky Nolasco (12-13, 4.64) was pummeled, and Louisville was led by a four-hit, four-run effort from Joe Jackson, as well as Rico Petrocelli's league-leading 29th homer, to back Edinson Volquez (13-9, 4.15)

I can't believe it has taken this many years, but at least Eddie is getting moderate playing time and is going to the playoffs.

This is the most playing time he's gotten, but he's still being underused. His playing time actually dwindled after the All-Star Break. His attitude remains good, which is a credit to him, but the guy would be best served by being dealt and given a chance to play every day. Maybe he'll have a Carlos Beltran postseason (or, in PBL terms, a Justin Morneau postseason) and get his credit.

Indianapolis 3, Chicago 2: Erik Bedard (10-11, 3.84) threw 8 shutout innings and got RBIs from Jimmy Wynn, Heinie Wagner and Mike Easler and Indianapolis held off a 9th inning rally sparked by Bert Campaneris' RBI triple and steal of home before Jose Cardenal grounded out and Jack Glasscock did the same with Ron LeFlore on second as the tying run. Len Barker allowed 2 runs over 7 2/3 to fall to 9-10.

Sacramento 10, Milwaukee 4: The Stingers knocked out Moose Haas with a 6 run first and blasted Craig Swan as well en route to the rout. Al Zarilla hit his 11th homer for Sacramento, and drove in a pair, as did Whitey Lockman, who had three hits as well. Haas fell to 7-11 with a 4.80 ERA, and is 0-7 with an 8.21 ERA in his last seven starts.

Wichita 4, Louisville 2: Jonas Gaines improved to 2-0, bending but not breaking after allowing a first inning 2-run homer to Jim Lefebvre. Larry Doyle's 2-run double in the fifth broke a 2-2 tie. Bill Hands (12-11, 4.49) took the loss.

Chicago 10, Indianapolis 3: Babe Ruth hit two homers off loser Doug Waechter (0-1) and Johan Santana (12-7, 4.77) rebounded after two terrible outings as the Hitmen also got five RBI from Frank Isbell in the win, scoring at least 9 runs for the fourth time in seven days.

Milwaukee 6, Sacramento 2: Smokey Joe Williams won his 16th of the year, backed by homers from Joe Tinker, Nick Johnson and Pete Hill. Carlos Marmol (10-12, 4.09) allowed all the runs for Sacramento.

Louisville 2, Wichita 1: Rube Foster improved to 6-2 as a starter, allowing one run over 8+ innings - a homer to Frank Chance in the ninth - to outduel Jay Hughes (9-14, 4.47). Smoky Burgess homered in the 8th for Louisville.

Chicago 6, Memphis 3: The last run of interleague play begins with the Hitmen getting homers from all three in the heart of their order. Babe Ruth (23), Charley Jones (29) and Roger Connor (21) each went deep to back Rich Gale (3-1, 1.43).

St. Louis 10, Sacramento 9: The Stingers left 13 on base in this donnybrook that saw Rube Marquard and Fergie Jenkins each hit hard in an affair that saw the game tied or lead change 9 different times. Joel Youngblood drove in four for Sacramento, and now is hitting .500 with 2 homers and 9 RBI this month. PBL RBI leader Fred Lynn drove in another and had three hits for the first-place Tides.

Arizona 3, Wichita 2 (10 innings): Dan Casey (11-8) threw a 10-inning complete game and Larry Gardner hit a walkoff homer in the 10th off Chad Cordero to blow starter Rube Waddell's 9-inning, two-run, six-hit performance, sending the Brigade back down to .500, their two-month run in July and August seeming a distant memory.

Memphis 6, Chicago 4: A pitchers duel between Memphis' Blue Moon Odom and Chicago's Ben Sanders blew up when Memphis hung a four-spot on Sanders in the 7th, starting with Quincy Trouppe's 12th homer of the season. Odom improved to 13-5, 3.56. Sanders fell to 16-8, 3.36.

Sacramento 4, St. Louis 1: Bob Veale (14-2, 2.62) worked in and out of trouble through 5+ less than sharp innings, but was good enough. George Mullin and Mark Mulder hurled 4 innings of shutout relief, and Ted Kluszewski's first-inning 2-run shot set a lead the Stingers would never relinquish.

Arizona 5, Wichita 2: Mike LaCoss (9-14, 3.25) got what, for him, was inordinate run support and made it stand up. Mike Hargrove drove in three as Wichita fell for the 7th time in 8 games.
