Might be a good idea to root for the ref and hope he doesn't make any bone-headed game effecting decisions

I look at these teams, and I say "why couldn't the US have been in a group with Tunisia and Saudi Arabia?"

Sticking his foot out to impede on the progress would have done just as much.

he had every reason to slide there...if he doesnt the Italian has a clear pass across the goal mouth, instead he slide to block it and the Italian stuck his foot underneath him to get the PK

Again, the Aussie defense broke down in the final seconds. They had a man up but sent too many people up at that time. Italy made a good play and Neil made a dumb move in the box. It wasn't a bone-headed game affecting decision, it was a call that would be made, whether it was in the first minute or the last.

No, he really had no reason to slide. He was in front of the Italian and he would have needed to have been beat off a dribble before the Italian had a clear path across the goal. You just can't risk slide tackling in the box!

And also, if Neill forced Grosso to take an extra dribble or two to get past him, Schwarzer would have had an extra second or two to get in position to give Grosso a bad angle, and some more help would have been back further.

As I've said before here, if every time you give that penalty, even if it is for some reason in the rule book (we need RMY to answer that), you will have half a dozen penalties a game.

I somehow think Mr. Cantalejo may well get one of the later games. Watch for Mr. Blatter's statement - I think he will be very pleased with his decisions.

He wouldn't be if he had given Australia the penalty

I wouldn't bother, dude. With Blatter in charge it will continue to snowball out of control IMO.
