2019 World Series

Here's the matchup. Pretty clear what this looks like on paper. The 2 best offenses in the game, with one outstanding staff, and one staff that should get obliterated. It just NEVER works out that way.

2019 World Series

Game 1
Philadelphia Patriots-Luis Acosta (1-2 7.08)
@
Chicago Iron Pigs-Ken Lee (0-1 7.15)

Eric Coates kicks things off by drilling a solo shot in the bottom of the 1st.
David Fleming's 2 run shot in the 2nd, and Todd Heltons 2B, put Philly up 3-1. Paul Riggs makes it 3-2 with a solo homer in the bottom half.
Hugh Collins RBI double in the 3rd ties it up, where it stays into the 6th.
Ted Long drills a solo homer in the top half, before George Knox's 3 run homer in the bottom caps a 4 run 6th, putting us up 7-4.
Brady Hardin hits a solo shot off Andy Morgan in the 7th to make it 7-5.
Ellison and Holt can't get out of the 8th, needing Cruz to come in and slam the door, but not before a run scores to cut the lead to 7-6.
Then, with 1 out in the 9th, up 7-6, Todd Helton slams a 1 out 2 strike 3 run homer to deep right, giving the Patriots a 9-7 lead, and after Gibbons allows both batters to reach leading off the 9th, we cannot muster anything, and fall in game 1.
Philadelphia 9 Chicago 7
W: Escalante (2-0) L: Cruz (0-1) S: Gibbons (5)
HR- PHI: Hardin (4) Helton (5) Long (1) Fleming (3) CHI: Coates (1) Riggs (2) Gnox (1)

Philadelphia leads the series 1-0

Game 2

Philadelphia-Zach Hurt (0-0 8.10)
@
Chicago-Roberto Martinez (1-0 8,68)

A back and forth affair that started with 2 runs apiece in the 3rd.
Alexander homers in the 4th to give us a 3-2 lead.
George Quinn hits a 2 run shot in the 6th to make it a 4-3 lead, and we tie it in the bottom half.
3 doubles in the 7th give them a 6-4 lead.
In the 7th we manage 2 singles, sac fly, walk, walk, single, single, single, before reliever Bob Park can come in and get the 2nd out. But the damage is done, 9-6 after 7.
Garcia and Ellison manage into the 9th and Cruz enters to get the final 2 outs for the win, and series tie.
Chicago 9 Philadelphia 6
W: Pennington (2-0) L Escalante (2-1) S: Cruz (4)
HR- PHI: Carr (1) CHI: Alexander (3)

Series tied 1-1

Game 3

Chicago Iron Pigs-Stan Hall (1-0 1.93)
@
Philadelphia Patriots-Octavio Vasquez (3-0 4.45)

Luis Chavez' 2 run shot in the 1st puts us ahead 2-0.
George Quinn got the Patriots within a run in the 3rd with an RBI double.
Philly manages to squeak out a run in the 6th to tie but a single run in the 7th puts us up 3-2.
Hall is outstanding in his 7.2-7-2-2-3-7, working out of some early jams and around some poor defense.
The 3-2 game becomes 5-2 after Miller slams an 8th inning homer and Bill Alexander manages to open it up hitting a pinch hit 3 run shot in the 9th with 1 out, sealing the win.
Chicago 9 Philadelphia 2
W: Hall (2-0) L: Vasquez (3-1)
HR- CHI: Miller (1) Chavez (2) Alexander (4)

Chicago leads the series 2-1

Game 4

Chicago Iron Pigs-Bryan Rogers (2-0 1.20)
@
Philadelphia Patriots-Dan Millman (1-2 7.30)

A leadoff homer by Luis Chavez and a continued blazing hot streak from Bill Alexander put us 1 win away from our 2nd world series championship. Alexander hit a solo shot in the 6th and his 2 run homer in the 8th was huge breathing room in what was a 3-2 game. Bryan Rogers continues his torrid post season, and the pen manages another great game, tossing 2.2 hitless innings to close it out.
Chicago 5 Philadelphia 2
W: Rogers (3-0) L: Millman (1-3) S: Cruz (5)
HR- CHI: Alexander 2 (6) Chavez (3)

Chicago leads the series 3-1

Game 5

Chicago Iron Pigs-Ken Lee (0-1 6.75)
@
Philadelphia Patriots-Luis Acosta (1-2 7.82)

Down 1-0, Philly's Pete Merritt hit a solo homer in the bottom of the 2nd.
Unbeknownst to everyone, that would be it for the scoring until the 11th.
Ken Lee went 8-3-1-1-0-7 and Luis Acosta went 7-8-1-1-2-4 in a fantastic pitchers duel.
We would use 5 relievers over the next 3 innings.
In the top of the 11th Julio Salinas would get Knox and Coates to start the inning. Dave Gibbons was called upon and he promptly walked Rivera. Cary Wallace pinch ran, and Lorenzelli chopped a high hopper for an infield single, putting runners on 1st and 2nd with 2 outs.
On a 1-1 pitch to Chavez the ball got away, and the passed ball allowed the runners to move up to 2nd and 3rd. I assumed that would be it and Chavez would draw the intentional pass. Apparently not, he took a 1-2 pitch, lining it over 2nd base and Lorenzelli motored from 2nd to make it a 3-1 Chicago lead.
Ernesto Cruz started the bottom of the 11th and got Fleming on a 1 pitch ground out to 1st. Hardin popped to 2nd before Paco Gonzales singled to center. W
With 2 outs Ron Carr stepped up...
On the 2-2 pitch Carr smoked a 1 hopper to Wallace at short who moved a step to his left, forcing the runner at 2nd and making the Iron Pigs the 2019 IBL World Series Champions!

Chicago 3 Philadelphia 1 (11)
W: Ellison (1-0) L: Gibbons (0-1) S Cruz (6)
HR PHI: Merritt (3)

WORLD SERIES MVP-Bill Alexander 6-16 6 Runs 3B 4 HR's 7 RBI's

A(N) Gold Gloves-Guillermo Cruz SS

Front office news:

Michigan has fired GM Eugene Eichler after just 1 year on the job. Eichler was the Houston GM for their WS years in 2012 and '13, and many thought he was brought in to bring Michigan, and its enormous stable of great prospects, to the next level.

Sacramento's Bartolo Romero, the 2017 manager of the year, and manager of the 2018 World Champs, has been fired. No idea what or why, but with the departure of Art McPhun, Mr. Marquis has instructed me to approach Romero for the managing job here in Chicago.

Free Agents

We're going to try and talk to Hugh Collins, but it appears his price has gone from 18-19, to 22-23. That is a problem.

Bryan Rogers did not hit his vesting option, and can potentially become a free agent. His initial ask is 18x9, which has no chance of happening. I am ready, and actually would like, to go into next season with Stan Hall and Andy Morgan in the rotation, along with Lee, Martinez and Zamora.

Both Collins and Rogers are Type A's, bringing a pick should they sign elsewhere.

I am going to see if I can get Hugh to come to a more reasonable number prior to filing.

As for arbitration, we have just 4. Ellison, Winston, Johnston and Webb. We will offer all 4, as well as Rogers and Collins, arbitration.

Reliever Mike Moore will not be offered arb, and will become a free agent.

2019 Financials

A look at the seasons ending financials. I have decided to allow Hugh Collins to file for free agency. If he does not accept arbitration, I can see if there is a market out there in the 20+M neighborhood (which I think there will be) and if so I'll take the pick, move Coates to LF, Ash to CF and Chavez to RF and go from there.

If both he and Rogers become free agents I'll have more than enough cash to make some inroads in free agency. And there are quite a few good free agents coming.

2019 Award Winners

Rookies, MVP's, Koufax winners...
Not sure if anyone noticed, but Luis Chavez, I think, is the IBL's first ever 40/40 player.

2019-20 Off season, an Iron Pig original heads north...

November

I've extended a 5 year offer to 38 year old Bartolo Romero, to manage the Iron Pig club. My feeling is that at 63 Art may just call it a day, going out on top. If not there's certainly a place here for him, but I think he's done managing.

11/2 Buffalo has acquired power lefty Mark Moser from Corpus Christi for 22 year old IF prospect Bill Miles. Miles is a 2 star 2nd round pick in 2019 out of Lafayette College. Moser appeared in 71 games, going 6-3 2.52 for the Hooks and figures to be a huge upgrade for the Bison pen.

11/4 Green Bay has snagged 25 year old slugger Roberto Alvarado from the Michigan Battlecats in exchange for 23 year old SP prospect Ralph Miller. In Alvarado's rookie year he hit .296-22-112 in 143 games. He's going to have to DH for Green Bay, as he's about the slowest runner in the IBL and his defense is ranked as atrocious at best. He's a switch hitter who excels from the left side. Miller is a 3 star prospect, but this still looks like a huge win for the Blizzard.

11/7 On my wedding anniversary I get a nice gift. 38 year old Manager Bartolo Romero has agreed to a 5 year 850K per year contract to manage the club. This could be the beginning of a lengthy relationship. His coaching reputation, across all areas, is legendary and players talk about his excellent handling of players of any type, from rookies to veterans.

11/11 New York Knights Manager Jesus Valentin took home the FL Manager of the Year for 2019. It was his 1st, after 4 years managing the Railcats Valentin came to New York in 2016, and the Knights have made the post season every year since. The 44 year old is in the final year of his contract.

In the Coastal, Patriot manager Manny Gonzalez took home the Manager for 2019. He was a bench coach in Dayton, managed the Roughriders in '15 and '16, came to Philly in 17 and made his 1st post season as a manager this year. The 58 year old has 2 years remaining on his contract.

11/14 Michigan made a pair of deals today. First acquiring 28 year old SP Jeffrey Blackburn, who will slide into their 4th slot, for 21 year old 1B Dave Dougherty. Dougherty was the Battlecats 2nd rounder in 2016 and the #52 prospect in 2017 who's wpn a GG at 1B. Blackburn is 10-12 4.60 in 100 games, over 233 IP, mainly from the pen.

In their 2nd deal they acquired 25 year old IF Manny Louque from Dayton for 18 year old C prospect Ron Moore (2* 2019 3rd rounder) and 22 year old 1B Dudley Williams (1.5* 2015 2nd rounder). Seems both sides got a good deal here as both prospects are IBL capable, both very good hitting prospects and Louque can play around the IF and is a good offensive player. He hit .269-23-56 in 99 games for Dayton.

11/18 Frontier League MVP Luis Chavez was hurt in an 'off the field' accident yesterday. He's laid up for about a week, but there are about 2000 rumors floating around on how, or what, happened. He told us he was landscaping at home, and for now we'll choose to believe that one.

11/19 Salary Arbitration
Wes Webb asked 1.005, and was offered 650K, the team won
Jake Ellison asked 3.86M and was offered 3.2M, the player won
John Johnston asked 1.005 and was offered 750K, the team won
Dave Winston asked 3.0M and was offered 2.4M, the team won.

In a stunning deal, the Baltimore Railcats sent 5 players to the Boston Bombers for 38 year old OF Don Evans. Boston receives 5 prospects, 21 year old CL Jorge Trinidad (4.5* 2019 3rd round out of San Diego State) 21 year old C Tom Hood (1* 2019 11th rounder) 22 year old 1B, OF Mike Saltoun (1.5* 2015 7th rounder, can fly) 24 year old SS Jon Summers (1* 2017 15th rounder out of LSU, outstanding glove at SS) and 22 year old 1B/3B Tyson Scott (1* 2019 5th rounder out of Long Beach State, potentially big power low average bat). The 38 year old Evans is a career .287/.399/.486 hitter with 174 homers in 985 games. He had a career high 102 RBI's for Boston last season. He is a 2 time all star and a 2012 Gold Glove winner in RF. His 9.8M vesting option was met this year, so he has 1 season remaining on his contract.

11/22 Bryan Rogers and Hugh Collins, as expected, have declined arbitration and filed for free agency. I will make an attempt to sign Hugh if at all possible, but will be prepared to go in another direction if the price is too high.

11/30 Damn. I didn't expect him to sign this fast, but Hugh Collins signed a 4 year 71.6M dollar deal with the Edmonton Trappers. I never expected to lose him, so I guess I'll manage and head in another direction. To make matters worse, I had one big ticket free agent I was talking to, in case Collins didn't work out. SS Jimmy Rollins, and he signed today as well. He signed a 3 year 49.2M dollar deal with, appropriately, the Philadelphia Patriots. Fan interest dropped from 88 to 82 with the Collins signing.

In other big news, West Michigan acquired 3 time all star, former MVP and 2 time batting Champion Vincente Soto from the LA Wizards for 26 year old 3B Scott Thompson and 21 year old 1B Mario Martinez. Martinez is a 5 star prospect, taken in the 2nd round this past year out of Houston.

In another rather significant trade, Staten Island shipped 26 year old 1B Wazir Ubadah to Arizona for 21 year old OF Jerry Bond (2.5* 2019 2nd rounder). Bond is a power bat corner OF prospect while Ubadah has hit 57 homers and driven in 189 runs the past 2 seasons. His best year, 2018, he hit .268-33-113 in 157 games.

Beginning of December

12/1 Rule 5 Draft
Took no one but lost 2. Veteran catcher Tom Gentry was taken by Columbus and Staten Island took 24 year old AAA P Augusto Rocha.

IBL SINGLE SEASON RECORD-STRIKEOUTS
Walt Thompson (SAC) 281 '14
Bryant Thomas (TUL) 279 '19
Walt Thompson (SAC) 278 '12
Ramon Roa (PIT) 276 '19
Ramon Roa (PIT) 266 '18

12/2 West Michigan remained aggressive, signing SP Artie Johnson to a 5 year 88.5M dollar deal. Johnson is 75-39 4.09 in 141 starts. He will make 13.9 next year with an escalating base to 21.4 in 2024. Probably a decent barometer for Rogers market, though Johnson is 27 to Rogers 29.

LA sent slugging 1B/DH Julio Mercado (.269-30-100) and a 4th round pick to Baltimore for 28 year old IF Kyle Hill and 22 year old OF Hank Nelson. Mercado is a legit middle of the order bat, neither player LA received figures to be a starter.

12/3 Philadelphia signed former Battlecat Catcher Dana Reed to a 5 year 78M dollar deal. The 28 year old is a career .290-126-573 hitter in 898 career games between Pittsburgh and Michigan. Reed is a 3 time all star.

Unable to reach a long term deal Staten Island sent 27 year old Closer Stephen Watkins (21-17 95 Saves 2.93 in 348 games) to San Antonio for 19 year old OF prospect Andres Lopez (2.5*) and 21 year old C prospect Nacho Valencia (1*). Both prospects have very projectable bats, but it's a very confusing trade considering Watkins is rates as on the premiere closers in the game, and is just 27.

12/6 New Hampshire “stole” division rival Pittsburgh's closer, as Joe Boswell signed a 2 year 24.7M dollar deal with the Fisher Cats.

While the Knights inked 32 year old Julio Gonzales to a 3 year 36.9M dollar deal. Gonzales is 4 saves from 300 in his career.

IBL RECORDS SET IN 2019
Hitting
At Bats-Carlos Andrade (BRO) set a new record with 683 AB's, breaking Kevin Moore's (EDM) old record of 676. George Quinn (PHI) also broke the record with 677 AB's this year.
Runs-Luis Chavez (CHI) tied Bill Hill (DAY) and Dave Palmer's (EDM) record of 145 runs.

Pitching
Win %-Bryan Rogers (CHI) 16-2 record produced an .889 win %, breaking Vincent Bray's (PIT) old record of .857 (24-4)
CG's-Ruben Cruz (SAN) tied his 2015 record with 12 complete games.
Hits/9-Bryant Thomas (TUL) allowed 6.11 hits per 9, breaking Shawn Calhoun's (WMI) 2013 record of 6.28.
OPP AVG-Bryant Thomas (TUL) allowed a .1924 opponents batting average, breaking Shawn Calhoun's (WMI) 2013 record of .1966.

12/8 Las Vegas managed to sign 3B Chandler Harris to a 3 year 21.3M dollar free agent deal. Leaving division rivals Los Angeles, reeling. Harris is a career .246 hitter with 184 homers in 811 games. He's a 3 time gold glove winner at 3B and a 1 time all star. He lead the CL in HR's in 2018 with 49.

12/9 Edmonton is going for it, today signing 31 year old former all star C Ernesto Garza to a 2 year 11.6M dollar deal.

The Bombers signed SP Colin Durham to a 5 year 88M dollar deal. He's 80-71 4.11 lifetime.

The winter meetings

DAY 1
It's been clear since day 1, West Michigan (no post season appearance since 2012) and Edmonton are focused on getting good, now. The White Caps trade for Soto, acquiring OF Warren Rogers, and today opening the winter meetings with 2 different trades.

In the 1st deal they sent 31 year old RP Antonio Espinoza (58 games 6-5 1 SV 3.76) and 22 yr old SP Lester King (2*) to Sacramento in exchange for 29 year old 1B/DH Sherwood Miller. Miller is coming off a .298-41-122 season and is a career .255/.380/.470 hitter with 83 HR's and 277 RBI's in 404 games.

In the 2nd deal they send 26 yr old SP Mike Lucas to Edmonton for 18 year old OF prospect Javier Valenzuela. Lucas is 29-27 4.59 lifetime and OSA scouts think Valenzuela is a 5* prospect.

DAY 2
Boston sends 27 yr old RP Jose Martinez (17-20 3.67 58 Saves) and a 3rd round pick to Tulsa for 21 year old OF prospect Ramon Castro (3.5* big bat) and 24 year old IF Dave Tyler (utility IF, low ceiling).

In a 2nd deal Boston sends SP Adam Sanders (13-24 4.42 lifetime) to Houston for 32 year old 1B/DH Kelly O'Gorman (.289/.349/.448 in part time duty). O'Gorman figures to see far more time as a starting DH/1B in Boston than he has in any season so far, and Boston believes his bat is a top of the order one.

Off Season news....And another WS winner leaves Chicago

12/19 Bryan Rogers found a home. Signing with the Buffalo Bisons for 6 years, 94.8M. Rogers becomes their defacto ace, and we receive our 2nd supplemental pick. Fans, understandably, are unhappy, interest drops to 76.

12/21 Arizona inks former White Cap CF Daniel Collins to a 6 year 81.8M dollar deal.
Holy cow, the Railcats signed free agent Ramon Roa to a 6 year 113M dollar contract. Roa signing with a division rival was completely unexpected, as Baltimore was never one of the teams rumored to be in on him. With this signing the Railcat rotation becomes a division favorite and fan interest in Baltimore shot up.

12/22 The Railcats aren't done. Today signing 39 year old IF Mathew Moore to a 2 year 33.6M dollar deal. Moore is a career .285 hitter with 199 HR's and 787 RBI's. He was the 2013 Hank Aaron award winner, and is a 4 time All Star who's led the league twice in walks, twice in OBP. Fans in New York are furious that the Knights let him get away.

El Paso signed SP Jim Morris to a 3 year 46.2M dollar deal. The 25 year old is 43-78 4.52 in 1019 innings, all for the Hooks of Corpus Christi.

Remaining Free Agents- Alex Rodriguez (SS), Mark Buerhle (SP) Kurt Peterson (OF) Albert Camp (CL) are some of the names still out there.

12/23 Edmonton manages to nab CL Albert Camp, agreeing to a 3 year 36.9M dollar deal. He's 19-13 with 67 Saves and 3.28 ERA in 315 games.

12/25 Corpus Christi found their new closer. Signing former Bison Closer Glenn Hanna to a 2 year 10M dollar deal.

Knuckleballer Matthieu Cafasso signed a 2 year 19M dollar deal with Coastal League Champion Philadelphia today.

12/28 The only real substantive talks we've had were with 28 year old RP Stewart Ward. He had a monster '19 season for New Hampshire (4-3 39 Saves 2.19) and we were interested at 6-7M a year for 3-4 years. Today he signed with LA for 18.3M over 2 years.

CAREER LEADERS-ERA
Ernesto Cruz (CHI) 1.83
Joe Boswell (NH) 1.86
Bill Barlow (LV) 2.07

2020

1/3 Jesus Machado had a monster 2019. Getting a shot to close for the first time, he sported a 1.62 and saved 40 games in 66 appearances, and earned a 3 year 22.2M dollar deal from the Hooks, and will now call Corpus Christi home.

1/21 Fresno signed 33 year old SP Esteban Valdez to a 4 year 32.8M dollar deal. He is 106-90 with a 4.31 in 1781.2 IP, with 1445 career K's.

2/1 Not going to lie, very much looking forward to the expanded scouting stuff, and developmental idea around the minor leagues.

But in the meantime, I am putting major capital into player development this year. Moving the scouting expense to 14.5M, up from about 4. It needs to make a difference, I need more high end prospects in AA and AAA.

Heading into camp

2/3 LA signed 2 time all star and 2017 Gold Glove winner Marcos Oginlara to a 2 year 11.8M dollar deal. I am assuming this is their replacement for losing Soto. This guys a gold glove defender in every OF position, a very good runner and a power bat from the right side. His best season was 2017 when he hit .254-34-97 in 145 games. He's spent his entire IBL career in NY, and is heading across the country to continue his career.

2/9 Boston signed 27 year old multiple GG winner Kurt Peterson to a 6 year 47.2M dollar free agent contract. The Bombers are getting serious about getting good, fast.

FWIW Arod is still unsigned, and I cannot bring myself to even think about making a move.

2/29 New Hampshire got a steal today, signing 24 year old lefty Mark Buerhle to a 3 year 13.6M dollar deal. Buerhle is 41-40 4.41 in his career.
