Im watching Stutgart against Berlin and Pantelic got a yellow for a supposed dive in the middle part of the pitch. Doubt this would have happened in England.

I think the English can learn a thing or two from the guys at Dolphins Stadium, or frankly any NFL stadium field staff on how to create a good drainage system (see: Super Bowl XLI).
Also, don't they have some sort of heating system under the field? Last edited by Raderick v2.0; 02-26-2007 at 05:43 AM. |

Fox Soccer Channel's England/FA classic tonight was the 1983 FA Cup Final between Manchester United and Brighton.
The Manchester United fans were singing--not sarcastically, but with vigour--"You'll Never Walk Alone". I couldn't have been more perplexed.

Most teams do but the lower down the leagues you go the less often teams will have it, I don't think the teams do to badly really as I can't remember the last time a top flight game was called of due to the pitch.

The Brighton v United one if memory serves me right went to a replay but Brighton had a golden chance in the first game to win it but blew it, can't think of the Brighton player who missed the chance, anybody ? |

Given I was still a passionate United fan back then and practically had a heart attack at that moment it is indelibly etched on my memory. Gordon Smith was the generous striker.
It is a shame the replay was such a damp squib and it did take the edge off winning the cup a wee bit. 3-0 up at halftime and the season was done. The second half was a bit pointless and I think everyone would have been happy to call it a match at the break and let us have a party and still get home at a reasonable hour. Thursday night replays were never ideal... I still don’t know why they didn’t just push it back the whole week to the next Saturday. Then again it did mean we won it on Sir Matt’s birthday, and it is a damn sight better than a shoot-out so it wasn’t all bad. Boilermaker, regarding the song; You’ll Never Walk Alone was a classic football song that all clubs used to sing for quite a long time. It only started to drop out of circulation and become seen as an exclusively Liverpool/Celtic song fairly recently, although I can’t pin down when. Possibly it was post-Heysel when we all shunned everything Scouse for a while, but I feel it was already beginning to fall out of fashion elsewhere in the late 70s. |

The two Spurs games you quote are certainly the last classic finals in my book, although the Manchester City game sticks out in my mind more for my little sister having a go at me because Worzel Gummidge was cancelled to make way for extra time... somehow in her little mind this became my fault
Chelsea Leeds stands out in my mind, but it is also one of my earliest clear non-United football memories. I also have very find memories of Wimbledon's triumph in 88 although no so much for the match. It had the feeling of a watershed going into the match with the threat of the breakaway league, increasing imbalance in the league and money steadily becoming a factor in the game. Liverpool completing a second double would have felt like a nail in the coffin. Wimbledon saved the dream that day, but sadly they only delayed the inevitable. |
