Young Star Helps Propel AL to Win in Midseason Classic The best of the best took to the field at Municipal Stadium tonight, giving MLB fans a show in the annual all-star game. The AL earned bragging rights with a 4-2 win over the NL. Denis Menke was named the MVP for his efforts, as he batted 2-for-2 in the contest. "I'm just glad we won, that's the main thing," he said. 1966 World Series: Cleveland Guardians vs. Atlanta Braves
Results Game 1, October 5th, 1966, Atlanta Stadium Road Win Lifts Cleveland to 1-0 Lead in WS The Cleveland Guardians wasted no time taking the lead in the World Series, beating the Atlanta Braves at Atlanta Stadium by the score of 9-3. The win gives Cleveland a 1-0 lead in the best-of-7 series. Guardians right-hander Pat Jarvis threw 6.0 innings allowing 3 runs. In the top of the fourth, Cleveland center fielder Lenny Green had a productive at-bat. With the bases loaded and one out, Green stroked a 2-run single to right. It made the score 3-0, Cleveland. For the game, he was 1 for 3 with a walk. He scored 2 runs and drove in 2. "The first game of a series is kind of a tone-setter, right?" Green said later. "After tonight, I hope so." The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Atlanta Stadium in Atlanta. Guardians lead series 1-0 Game 2, October 6th, 1966, Atlanta Stadium Roseboro, Guardians Wallop Braves in Game 2 of WS Riding the 2-hit performance of catcher Johnny Roseboro, the Cleveland Guardians got a road win against the Atlanta Braves, 7-2, in Game 2 of the World Series. Roseboro went 2-3 with a home run and a walk. He scored 2 runs and drove in 3 for the Guardians, who now lead the best-of-7 series, 2 games to 0. Fred Valentine, the Cleveland left fielder, contributed a 2-run home run in the top of the third inning to make the score 2-0, Guardians. For the game, Valentine went 1 for 5 with a home run. He drove in 2 runs and scored once. "We're one game closer to our goal," Cleveland manager Grant Bowler said later. "It isn't any more complicated than that." The next game is set to be played on October 8th, 1966 at Cleveland Stadium in Cleveland. Guardians lead series 2-0 Game 3, October 8th, 1966, Cleveland Stadium Atlanta Breaks Through for First Win in World Series; Now Trails 2-1 Behind a bravura effort from starter Earl Wilson, the Atlanta Braves topped the Cleveland Guardians by the score of 4-0 and got their first win in the 1966 World Series. Wilson threw 8.1 innings of shutout ball for the Braves. The win narrows Atlanta's deficit to 2-1. Wilson allowed no runs on 8 hits over 8.1 innings for the Braves. He walked 2 and struck out 6. "We lost," Cleveland manager Grant Bowler said later. "We'll deal with it. The series isn't over." The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Cleveland Stadium in Cleveland. But, as the saying goes, "to the victors go the spoils." For the victorious Cleveland Guardians, that meant the Major League Baseball World Series trophy. The Guardians took a 9-1 victory over the Atlanta Braves at Cleveland Stadium, winning their 7th championship after taking the series 4-1.
