CHIX BEAT BEARS AGAIN IN 1ST GAME OF TWINBILL
In the opening game of the doubleheader in Memphis, the Chicks beat Mobile for the third straight game in the battle of the Southern Association front-runners... young lefty Bob Schultz (11-10) was solid as a rock in a 4-2 triumph over the Bears, limiting them to just six hits with nine Ks and only two bases on balls... Memphis beat 14-game winner Pete Wojey (14-7/2.42), tagging him for four runs on eight hits in six innings... pacing the Chickasaws at the plate with two RBIs each were CF Paul Armstrong (.327/42 RBI) and RF Roy Bueschen (.294/26 RBI)... 3B Bill Hart (.261/77 RBI) accounted for all of Mobile runs with a two-run clout in the first inning... it was his 13th of the year.

BEARS FINALLY WIN FINALE, DIVIDE DOUBLEHEADER
The second place Mobile Bears rolled into Memphis and Russwood Park for a four-game series intent on cutting into their big Southern Association lead... sadly all the Bruins could do was win one of the games and fall seven and a half games back in the race... the Chicks (77-29) won the first three contests before Mobile (69-36) finally got into the win column in the finale of the series... in the nightcap of the twinbill, in a monumental outing Ken Olson (13-5/3.75) scattered 13 hits to come away with a 4-1 victory over 13-game winner Chuck Eisenmann (13-4/2.84)... Olson stranded 12 Chickasaws, fanned five batters and issued only one free pass... RF Roy Bueschen's (.292/27 RBI) home run was all the Chicks could get off of Olson... Eisenmann was the loser, but kept his club close... in his eight innings Mobile managed only two runs on six hits... he left trailing by a 2-1 score.

ROOKIE QUINN HALTS PELS IN GAME 1
In game one of a doubleheader, 20-year-old Ivy League pitcher Frankie Quinn (3-1/2.57) was spot on for the Birmingham Barons at home at Rickwood Field... Quinn, a recent Yale graduate, put down the New Orleans Pelicans 6-2, striking out nine, walking nobody and only permitting one earned run and eight hits in eight and two-thirds innings... a fatigued Quinn needed the help of Al Heuser (1-0/3.38/9 G) for the final out of the game... the Barons rapped Pel pitching for 14 hits, led by 1B Walt Dropo (.293/40 RBI) with three RBIs and CF Tommy O'Brien (.309/76 RBI) with a pair of ribbies... Glenn Fletcher (7-7/4.91) was pinned with the loss... it was a sloppily-played game with three errors by each team... three of the five scores charged to Fletcher were not earned.

BARONS TAKE 2 FROM PELS
It was a good day all-around at Rickwood Field in Birmingham... good for the Barons, Fritz Dorish and the home fans... third place Birmingham (56-49) took both ends of the twinbill from sixth place New Orleans (50-58)... Dorish hurled them to a 6-3 victory in the nightcap in spite of giving up 13 hits... the Barons pelted Pel pitching for 16 hits, including three roundtrippers... RF Jimmy Wasdell (.305/17 RBI) hit a pair and batted in three runs, while SS Dick Atkins (.310/19 RBI) socked a two-run shot... winning pitcher Dorish (2-0/2.65) went the distance, fanned five Pelicans and walked none... Geoge Diehl (6-9/4.13) was hung with the loss, slapped for four runs in the first three frames.

CUCCURULLO CLIPS CRAX IN OPENER
Cookie Cuccurullo and Smoky Burgess starred for the Nashville Vols in the opening game of the Sunday afternoon doubleheader at Sulphur Dell... Cuccurullo (7-9/4.56) clipped the Atlanta Crackers 6-2, holding them to just six hits, struck out four batters and walked none in a stellar performance... Burgess (,389/58 RBI), the top hitter in the Southern Association with a .389 BA, went 3-4 and drove in four runs, collecting his 15th home run... Nashville is on a three-game win streak... Atlanta has lost its last three... the Crackers had a terrible day defensively with six errors.

LATE RALLY GAINS SPLIT FOR ATLANTA
It took eight runs in the last two innings of the nightcap for seventh place Atlanta (37-71) to gain a split in the doubleheader with the Nashville Vols, who fell 11-6... the Crackers torched Nashville hurlers for 16 hits with LF Buster Maynard (.259/38 RBI), SS Fred Chapman (.261/31 RBI) and 2B Gene Verble (.249/28 RBI) driving in two runs apiece... tops at bat for the Vols were RF Chuck Workman (.373/133 RBI) and 1B George Byam (.256/35 RBI) each with two RBIs... Nashville (52-54) is in the fourth spot in the SA standings.

DRAKE'S 2 HRS & 7 RBIS TOO MUCH FOR LR IN GAME 1
It was a wild-and-wooly scoring fest in the first game of the twinbill in Little Rock at Ray Winder Field... Chattanooga roared back from an 11-4 deficit with nine runs in the top of the 9th and outlasted the Travelers 13-11... Lookout CF Larry Drake (.251/68 RBI) hammered a pair of homers and drove in six runs... his grand-slammer in the 9th was the game-winner... Drake is third in the Southern Association with 26 home runs... the red-hot hitting Drake has socked six in the last four games and eight in his previous nine games.

TRAVS AND 'NOOGA SPLIT A TWINBILL
It's wasn't easy, but the fifth place Little Rock Travelers (51-55) escaped with a hair-raising win in the second game of the doubleheader with the never-say-die last place Chattanooga Lookouts (32-72)... the Travelers blew a six-run lead in the top of the 9th, but they managed to gain a split with a dramatic 7-6 recovery on 1B Bobby Moyer's RBI single... Little Rock starter Marlin Stuart shut out the Lookouts for the first eight frames, but couldn't finish them off... but the Pebble bats saved the day with the last-inning rally... they tore into reliever Woody Johnson (1-3/3.32/20 G) for three hits in the fatal frame to salvage the split.

TRAVS TOP CRACKERS BEHIND SAULIA
On their home diamond, Little Rock topped Atlanta 7-1 behind the sharp pitching of Neil Saulia (9-7/4.80), who fired a complete game, stopping the Crackers on seven hits, while walking only two batters and fanning seven... the Travelers supported him with 11 hits and broke up a tight 2-1 game with five runs in the 8th, highlighted by RF Joe Mierkowicz's (.382/21 RBI) two-run triple... Carl Lindquist (9-12/3.70) toiled in defeat, slammed for all seven runs... the victory enabled Little Rock (52-55) to climb into a tie for fourth place with Nashville (52-55)... both clubs are far out in the pennant chase, trailng the top team Memphis (78-29) by 26 games.

CHICKS DEAL PELS PAINFUL LOSS
Visiting New Orleans came apart in the bottom of the 9th at Russwood Park and suffered a painful 3-2 loss to the Memphis Chicks... the Pelicans had the game in their control 2-1 heading into Memphis' last at-bat... the Southern Association leader churned out two quick scores and walked off with the win on RF Roy Bueschen's (.298/29 RBI) two-run base hit, sending in CF Paul Armstrong (.332/42 RBI) and 3B John Antonelli (.332/40 RBI) with the tying and winning runs... both clubs got strong mound outings from their starters... Jim Goodwin (4-1/2.67) worked the first eight innings for Memphis and held New Orleans to two runs on seven hits with six Ks and only one free pass, while Lee Howard (3-4/4.59) also hurled eight frames and yielded just one run... the decisions went to the bullpen... John Perkovich (18-2/2.98/24 G) snapped up his 18th victory with a perfect 9th, while Jim Kleckley (7-7/1.92/33 G) caught the loss... the Chickasaws (78-29) increased their SA lead over idle Mobile (69-36) to eight games... this was sixth place New Orleans' (50-59) third consecutve defeat.

'NOOGA CRUSHES NASHVILLE ON DRAKE HOMERS
Nobody has been hotter in the Southern Association than Chattanooga CF Larry Drake (.258/71 RBI)...Drake has hit 8 homers in the last 6 games... he continued his home-run spree with two more to crush the Nashville 10-5 at Joe Engel Stadium... Drake hit his 27th and 28th of the year and batted in three runs... RF Gabby Williams (.253/34 RBI) also chimed in with a third home run, a 2-run clout... the Lookouts busted up a 5-5 tie in the 7th on Drake's second smash of the game, putting them ahead to stay... the Chattanooga bullpen did their job well, shutting down the Vols completely the last four frames... Jack McKinney (4-9/5.44) got the win with three scoreless innings and five strikeouts... Nashville (52-55) is now deadlocked with Little Rock (52-55) for the fourth spot in the SA standings... Chattanooga is in the midst of an atrocious season, languishing in last place with a miserable 33-72 mark.

Second place Mobile (69-36) and third place Birmingham (56-49) did not play... they were not scheduled yesterday.

PALM RETURNS FROM MAJORS, BEATS BEARS
In Southern Association action Tuesday evening, the third place Birmingham Barons picked up a solid pitcher from the parent team, the Boston Red Sox... they returned young 23-year-old Mike Palm after a three-week stint in the majors... Palm quickly picked up where he left off and easily put down the second place Mobile Bears 8-2, stopping them on two runs and six hits in his eight innings... Palm fanned 10 and walked three, upping his record to 9-4 with a brilliant Southern Association-leading 1.52 ERA... poor defense hurt Mobile starter and loser Roy Boles (4-4/4.27)... of the five runs he allowed, only one was earned... the four-run 6th did in Boles and the Bears, snapping a 1-1 deadlock and gave Birmingham its third victory in a row... Baron RF George Wilson (.327/77 RBI) had three ribbies for the day, including his 25th home run... 1B Walt Dropo (.302/42 RBI) also hit one out of the park, a two-run job... Palm didn't get much action in the Major Leagues, pitching in only three games and working just three innings... he posted a 6.00 ERA with the Red Sox... Mobile (69-37) slipped nine games behind the SA leader Memphis (79-29), while Birmingham (57-49) is a distant 21 games behind.

FIRST PLACE MEMPHIS POUNDS PELICANS
It was a tight contest until the 8th frame at Russwood Park in Memphis, where the Chickasaws pounded the New Orleans Pelicans for seven runs in a 14-6 rout... the Chicks cracked 15 hits with SS Freddie Hancock (.276/64 RBI) swatting a three-run triple to put away the Pels for good and send them down to a fourth successive loss... LF Billy Bowers (.314/57 RBI) also batted in three runs in the win... chalking up his 19th victory of the year was stylish left-hander John Perkovich (19-2/2.92)... lately manager Jack Onslow has been using him in his bullpen and getting great results there, too... Perkovich blanked New Orleans the last three innings... RF George McDonald (.362/30 RBI) had a wonderful game for the Pelicans... he had five of their 17 hits and drove in three runs... Memphis (79-29) increased its margin over runner-up Mobile to nine games in the Southern Association... New Orleans (50-60) is in the sixth spot in the standings, trailing by 30 games.

'NOOGA NOSES OUT NASHVILLE ON SCOTT HIT
Playing on their homefield in Chattanooga, the Lookouts nosed out Nashville 3-2... three consecutive base hits in the last of the 9th by George Myatt, Andy Fleitas and Minor Scott paved the way to victory, sending the Vols to their third straight defeat... big 6-3 right-hander Dick Weik (5-13/5.73) notched the win, only his 5th of the campaign... he weathered 10 hits by Nashville and only allowed the one earned run... Leo Twardy (7-11/4.97) suffered the loss, giving up 12 hits... Fleitas (.327/15 RBI) sparked Chattanooga with three-for-four... and manager/3B Myatt (.289/12 RBI) had a pair of hits and scored twice... the Vols (52-56) are still deadlocked with Little Rock (52-56) for fourth place in the SA standings.

CRAX TOPPLE TRAVELERS WITH LATE RALLY
Visiting Atlanta trailed 5-2 early in the ballgame against Little Rock, but rebounded late to come back and win it 7-5... three scores in the top of the 9th put the Crackers over the top... light-hitting 2B Gene Verble (.253/30 RBI) was the difference maker with a critical two-run single, which gave them their first lead in the game... Cracker reliever Joe Kirkland (4-0/1.86) recorded the win with two scoreless innings... the loss was pinned on Little Rock starter Al Piechota (8-10/3.33)... he was battered for 11 hits, but only permitted three earned runs... the Travelers made four errors in the game... Atlanta was even worse, committing five miscues, however they did turn three double plays... RF Ernie Logan (.290/29 RBI) lashed a two-run blast for Atlanta and drove in three runs altogether... Little Rock (52-56) remained in a fourth-place tie with Nashville (52-56)... both clubs lost last night.

CHIX WIN 3RD STRAIGHT, PELS LOSE 5TH STRAIGHT
Business as usual for the SA leader Memphis... the Chicks whipped sixth place New Orleans 4-1 for their third triumph in a row, while it was the Pelicans' fifth straight defeat... normally a reliever, Roman Brunswick (4-3/2.60/22 G), won his first start of the season in sterling fashion, restricting the Pels to just six hits, striking out four batters and walking only one... Memphis mustered nine hits off two Pelican pitchers with 3B John Antonelli (.335/43 RBI) driving in two runs and SS Freddie Hancock (.273/65 RBI) and 1B Gordon Goldsberry (.304/51 RBI) getting the other two... losing pitcher Dutch Dietz (9-8/3.12) doubled in New Orleans' only score in the top of the 5th... he permitted only one earned run in his six innings... the other three tiebreaking runs in the bottom of the 5th scored because of an infield error... Memphis (80-29) gained a half game on second place Mobile (70-38), raising their lead to nine and one-half games.

BEARS STOP BARONS' STREAK AT 3 GAMES
In the first game of a twi-night twinbill at Hartwell Field in Mobile, the Bears held off Birmingham 6-5 and stopped the Barons' three-game winning streak... the Bears led 6-2 going into the 9th and just barely escaped with a one-run victory... C George Dickey's three-run clout made it close... Pete Wojey (15-7/2.38) hurled the first seven frames, but tired out... Wojey allowed two runs - one earned - on eight hits, while striking out eight batters and issuing five bases on balls... Russ Oppliger (9-6/4.77/26 G) finished up, but almost blew the game, giving up three runs in his two innings... RF Walt Sessi (.286/32 RBI) paced the Bruins with a two-run homer in the 6th... Mobile torched Birmingham starter Al LaMacchia (5-9/3.89) for six runs... he went to the showers in the 6th behind 6-2 and was pinned with the loss.

BARONS VICTOR IN NIGHTCAP, BEARS SPLIT A PAIR
In game two of the doubleheader, third-place Birmingham (58-50) smoked Mobile (70-38) for nine runs in the first three frames, but then had to hold on for dear life... the Bears fought back, but came up one run short, falling 9-8, thus splitting a pair of games and falling a half-game further behind the Southern Association's top team, the Memphis Chickasaws (80-29)... the Chicks are nine and one-half games in front... the Barons lashed out 16 hits with RF George Wilson (.327/79 RBI) and 1B Walt Dropo (.300/44 RBI) leading the way with two hits and two RBIs apiece... Mobile collected 14 hits with LF Cal Abrams (.314/49 RBI) getting three of them and plating two runs... and 1B Preston Ward (.312/37 RBI) and RF Walt Sessi (.285/34 RBI) added two ribbies each... Birmingham starter Ken Rogers (2-2/3.10) evened his mark at 2-2 for the season, working seven sharp innings and only permitting two runs, striking out seven batters and walking four... standing out on the hill in relief for Mobile, Joe Smolko (3-3/294/26 G) didn't give up a single run in five and one-third innings and got them back into the game... 13-game winner Ken Olson (13-6/4.05) saw his ERA soar when the Barons lite him up for six runs in the first two innings.

'NOOGA ANNIHILATES NASHVILLE
The last place Chattanooga Lookouts annihilated the Nashville Vols 11-4, lashing out 19 hits at home at Joe Engel Stadium... it was the third straight victory for 'Nooga and the Vols fourth loss in a row... three players did most of the damage with nine hits and eight runs scored... LF Babe Ellis (.300/68 RBI) went 4-5 and scored three times... 3B Johnny Rizzo (.279/41 RBI) was 3-5 and scored twice... and 1B Robert Reid (.269/51 RBI) had two hits and scored three runs... plus CF Larry Drake (.255/72 RBI) smacked his 29th homer of the year, third best in the Southern Association... Nashville (52-57) is still tied with Little Rock (52-57) for fourth place in the SA standings.

CRACKERS CREEP PAST PEBS IN PITCHERS' DUEL
Two Atlanta hurlers combined to pitch a gem of a game to top the Little Rock Travelers 2-1... yesterday evening at Ray Winder Field, Ken Deal teamed up with Joe Kirkland... the tandem held the Travelers to eight hits with Deal (3-7/4.00) posting the win by working seven innings, allowing one run and six hits, while fanning six batters and walking three... Kirkland (4-0/1.69/14 G) finished up with two scoreless innings... Milo Johnson (12-9/3.35) was almost as good as he tossed a complete game, yielding only two runs on 10 hits with nine Ks and three walks... the Crackers overtook the Pebbles in the top of the 6th when C Red Mathis' (.281/39 RBI) sac fly scored LF Buster Maynard (.260/38 RBI) to tie it 1-all and 1B Chet Hajduk (.335/55 RBI) doubled in CF Country Brown (.327/33 RBI) with the winning run... Little Rock had led since the opening frame on 1B Bobby Moyer's RBI single... Nashville (52-57) also lost, so the Travelers are still deadlocked for the fourth spot in the SA race.

BARONS AND TRAVS TRADE ANNOUNCED
It looks like a good trade for both teams... Birmingham shipped two players, pitcher Alex Ronay and outfielder Joe Scheldt, to the Little Rock Travelers, in exchange for outfielder Ben Cantrell... the addition of Cantrell to the Baron offense gives them another very reliable bat in the lineup for the third place club.

Cantrell is batting a solid .287 this season with 5 home runs, 76 RBIs and 68 runs, while Ronay should be a good addition to the fourth place Little Rock pitching corps for the stretch run in the Southern Association... Ronay is 8-4 thus far this season with a 4.00 ERA... Scheldt has compiled a .270 mark with one homer and 24 RBIs... he has scored 53 runs.

BARONS HOLD OFF BEARS
Two of the better teams in the Southern Association tangled at Hartwell Field in Mobile last night... the third place Birmingham Barons and the second place Mobile Bears split a four-game series... and it was the Barons who chalked up the win in the finale... Birmingham managed to whip the Bears 5-4 in spite of being outhit 10 to 7... the longball made the difference with RF George Wilson (.327/81 RBI) and C George Dickey (.163/5 RBI) both going deep... it was number 26 for Wilson... he's fourth in the SA in roundtrippers... Frankie Quinn (4-1/2.74) logged the victory... the young right-hander gave up three runs on eight hits in seven and two-thirds innings, but struck out 10 Bruins and walked four... John Hall (6-4/3.38) was tagged with the defeat, permitting four runs on six hits in eight innings, walking five and fanning three... a bases-loaded walk to C George Dickey forced in the go-ahead run in the top of the 8th... Mobile (70-39) slipped 10 games out in the pennant chase behind idle first place Memphis (80-29)... Birmingham (59-50) is all alone in third place and trail the Chicks by 21 games... sixth place New Orleans (50-61) also had the day off.

VOLS SLAM 'NOOGA BEHIND SCHMIDT
Supported by 14 hits Nashville's Freddy Schmidt prevailed over Chattanooga 7-2... it wasn't a great performance, but it got the job done... Schmidt (2-1/4.21) scattered 10 hits and held the Lookouts to two runs... leading the Vols at the plate was the Southern Association batting leader, Smoky Burgess (.393/61 RBI) with three hits and two RBIs... Burgess tops the league with a stellar .393 BA... 3B Ted Cieslak (.284/37 RBI) had two hits and doubled in two runs... Chattanooga CF Larry Drake (.257/73 RBI) continued his hard-hitting ways with his 30th home run of the season, third best in the SA behind Chuck Workman with 44 and Charlie Gilbert with 31... the win ended Nashville's four-game losing skid and halted Chattanooga's winning streak at three... the Vols (53-57) remained tied with Little Rock (53-57) for fourth place in the SA standings... 'Nooga is nestled deep in the cellar with an abysmal 35-73 mark.

TRAVELERS TRASH CRACKERS AT HOME
On a rainy night in Little Rock, the Travelers trashed the Atlanta Crackers 12-6, bashing out 13 hits, led by three hits and three ribbies by RF Ed Mierkowicz (.373/24 RBI)... with 1B Bobby Moyer (.286/46 RBI), CF Johnny Grice (.315/48 RBI) and SS Alex De La Garza (.256/30 RBI) providing two RBIs each... newly-signed Andy Adams (1-0/4.32) had a rough time in his first start, knocked around for six runs and 12 hits in eight-plus innings, but he still picked up the victory, which enabled the Travelers (53-57) to keep pace with fourth place Nashville (53-57)... Atlanta (39-73) is in the seventh spot in the Southern Association standings.

CHIX RALLY PAST TRAVELERS IN 10TH
It's really tough to beat the Southern Association leader, the Memphis Chickasaws... the Little Rock Travelers tried their best, but just couldn't finish them off... trailing 7-5 going into the bottom of the 8th, the Chicks rallied and tied it up on CF Paul Armstrong's (.333/45 RBI) two-run triple, then won it in the 10th on an RBI single by SS Freddie Hancock (.275/66 RBI)... Memphis also got a superb relief outing from John Perkovich (20-2/2.86), who gained his 20th victory of the season with four scoreless innings and six strikeouts... Perkovich (.242/13 RBI) even poked a critical triple and a crucial double in the win... the Chicks outhit the Pebbles 15 to 14... coupled with the Mobile loss, Memphis (81-29) is 11 games in front of the Bears (70-40)... the defeat was costly to Little Rock (53-58)... Nashville (54-57) moved ahead of them by one game in the battle for the final playoff postion... the Vols are now in fourth place, while the Travelers fell to the fifth spot.

NASHVILLE MOWS DOWN MOBILE
On the road fourth place Nashville Vols put a good whupping on the second place Mobile Bears yesterday 8-2 at Hartwell Field, smashing 13 hits and two roundtrippers and getting a solid mound performance from winning pitcher Cookie Cuccurullo (8-9/4.41), who checked them on two runs and nine hits in eight-plus frames... Cookie walked five and struck out six Bears, shutting them out for the first eight innings... RF Chuck Workman (.373/138 RBI) and 1B George Byam (.262/40 RBI) both pounded home runs... it was Workman's 45th homer and 138th RBI, both easily tops in the Southern Association and Byam's 10th... Nashville (54-57) broke the tie with Little Rock (53-58) for the fourth spot in the Southern Association standings, slipping a game ahead of them.

BARONS BASH CRACKERS FOR 3RD STRAIGHT WIN
Third place Birmingham parlayed good hitting, good pitching and bad Atlanta defense to bash the seventh place Crackers 9-2 as the Barons chalked up their third straight win... leading the Birmingham 13-hit attack with three hits each were LF Ben Cantrell (.292/77 RBI) and CF Tommy O'Neill (.307/78 RBI), along with C George Dickey (.196/8 RBI) with two hits and three RBIs... racking up the victory was Harry Dorish (3-0/2.51)... he went all the way stopping the Crackers on two runs and eight hits with three Ks and a pair of walks... Atlanta's ace Norman Brown (8-10/3.05) had tough sledding, battered for five runs in just five innings... Birmingham upped its mark to 60-50 in the SA, while Atlanta is in seventh place with a poor 39-74 record.

PELS END 5-GAME LOSING STREAK
Two streaks came to an end at Pelican Stadium in New Orleans... the sixth-place hometown Pelicans downed the SA cellar-dwelling Chattanooga Lookouts 4-2 and put an end to its five-game losing skid and at the same time stopping 'Nooga's three-game win streak... Pelican RF George McDonald (.372/33 RBI) went 4-for-4 with a homer, three singles and three RBIs to pace them to the victory... New Orleans also got nice work on the hill from Glenn Fletcher (8-7/4.69)... the Lookouts got 12 hits off of him, but only two runs... going the distance he fanned four and walked only one batter... 12-game winner Vern Curtis (12-9/5.22) didn't last long... the Pelicans pelted him for four runs in just three innings.. neither club is going anywhere this year... both are deep in the second division of the Southern Association... the Pels are only 51-61 in sixth place with the Lookouts deep in the basement at 35-74.
