Rinehart allowed 9 hits, 2 walks and struck out 3. A 1-out single by 1B Dan White (25-5.1) won the game in the bottom of the 9th. He had 2 hits and scored a run. C Cliff Robinson (27-6.1) had 3 hits, stole a base and had 2 RBIs.

Providence (10) at Kansas City (3): Sam Paul (30-5.4) (12-12) over Frank Parsons (31-5.8) (11-23). Paul allowed 8 hits, 2 walks and struck out 4. At bat, he hit a triple, drew a walk, scored 2 runs and had 2 RBIs. Providence hit 6 triples. LF Charlie Gregor (26-5.2) had 3 hits with a double and a triple, scored a run and had 2 RBIs. CF Cub Beauregard (27-5.4) had 2 hits with a double, a walk, stole a base and score a run.

C Jake Houghton (34-5.4) of the Baltimore Orioles, broke his ankle stepping off the train in Providence and will likely miss the season.

To say that this is a big series we are starting today is a bit if an understatement. Manager/1b Pete Bucolo (37-4.1) and his Red Caps come into Recreation Park to play 4 games and give us a shot at taking over first place. They lead the league in runs scored with 5.6 per game (Detroit is #3 with 5.0). They are 2nd in runs allowed with 4.3 per game (Detroit is #1 with 3.9). The only time we have met so far, we split 4 games in Boston.

The only time Hank Anderson faced Boston, he got hammered.

CF Harley Becker (31-6.8) had 2 hits with a double, stole a base, scored a run and had an RBI. 2B Jocko Cole (23-6.1) hit a double, stole a base and scored a run. LF Ben Smith (26-6.7) had a hit and 2 RBIs.

For Boston, rookie CF Pat Stafford (24-5.4) had 3 hits with his 3rd home run of the season. 2B Mike Stables (29-7.1) had 2 hits with a triple and scored a run.

We are now in first place! We have to win tomorrow to keep it, though.

Liberty League:
New York (5) at Cleveland (2): Count Childs (29-3.1) (9-15) over Jim Ludwig (25-4.6) (4-5). Childs allowed 6 hits, 3 walks and struck out 4. At bat, he had a hit. Ludwig allowed 9 hits, 2 walks and struck out 4. 2B Charlie Smith (27-5.6) hit a 2-run home run and scored twice. 3B Ed Glass (25-4.5) had 2 hits with a double, stole a base and scored a run.

Troy (4) at Washington (5): Lou Townley (23-3.4) (14-8) over Miah Turner (24-5.3) (9-12). Townley allowed 8 hits, no walks and struck out 3. He has won 4 in a row and is 11-2 in his last 13 decisions. Turner allowed 7 hits, no walks and struck out 5. He has now lost 5 in a row and is 3-10 in his last 13 decisions. LF Ted Steeves (23-4.2) had 2 hits, scored a run and had an RBI. For the Haymakers, LF Jake Howard (26-4.6) had 3 hits and 2 RBIs.

Rochester (4) at Cincinnati (5): John Stevens (28-8.2) (13-10) over William Rose (34-4.9) (6-11). Stevens allowed 9 hits, 1 walk and struck out 6. At bat, he had a hit and scored a run. Rose allowed 8 hits, 1 walk and struck out 6. At bat, he hit a double and scored a run. LF Fleet Wilcox (28-4.9) drew a walk and hit a home run with 2 men on base, his 7th of the season.

Lost - 10 to 4

In 7 innings, McLeod allowed 9 hits, 2 walks and struck out 2.

Wood allowed 8 hits, no walks and struck out 6.

We made 3 errors and Boston made 4.

CF Harley Becker (31-6.8) had 2 hits with a double. 2B Jocko Cole (23-6.1) had 2 hits with a triple and an RBI. Jackie Porter (30-6.3) hit a 2-run pinch-hit home run, his 3rd of the season. We have to find him some more playing time, especially at home where he can launch them over our short right field fence.

For Boston, LF Charlie Warner (31-9.2) had 3 hits with his 4th home run of the season, scored 2 runs and had 2 RBIs. RF Dan Abrams (26-5.1) drew a walk and hit a 3-run home run. He is now 16 for 25 against McLeod (.640) lifetime with 2 home runs.

Some much for first place, but we can win it back in the second game.

Won - 8 to 6

Shearin allowed 13 hits, 2 walks and struck out 4. At bat, he had a 2-out single that scored the 2 runs that put us up 8 to 6. He also scored a run.

Morlock allowed 12 hits, 1 walk and struck out 1. At bat, he had a hit.

We made 3 errors and Boston made 4.

CF Joe Kraus (28-7.9) had 3 hits with a double, stole 2 bases, scored w runs and had an RBI. 1B Harley Becker (31-6.8) had 2 hits and an RBI. We are going to give him a trial at first base. LF Ben Smith (26-6.7) hit his 3rd home run of the season with a man aboard. RF Jackie Porter (30-6.3) had 2 hits, a walk and scored a run and threw out 2 baserunners. C Evan Eckberg (29-3.5) had 2 hits, scored a run and had 2 RBIs and threw out 3 of 4 base stealers. However, he also made an error and allowed 2 passed balls and 2 wild pitches.

For the Red Caps, manager/1B Pete Bucolo (37-4.1) had 3 hits, a walk and 2 RBIs. 3B Bill Gordon (28-3.7) had 3 hits with his 4th home run of the year, scored 2 runs and had 2 RBIs.

At bat, he had a hit. 3B Ed Glass (25-4.5) had 3 hits with a double, stole 2 bases, scored 3 runs and had an RBI. 1B John Hilliard (25-7.2) had 3 hits, scored 2 runs and had 3 RBIs.

New York (4) at Cleveland (5) Game 2: Bill Henrichs (26-7.4) (5-2) over Al Stone (25-3.1) (2-4). Henrichs allowed 12 hits, 1 walk and struck out 1. Stone allowed 9 hits, 1 walk and struck out 1. At bat, he had a hit. CF John Dahlhauser (25-5.0) had 3 hits with 2 doubles and scored a run. For the Gothams, 3b Ed Glass (25-4.5) had 3 hits with a double, but no runs or RBIs.

Troy (9) at Washington (8) Game 1: Miah Turner (24-5.3) (10-12) over John Ritch (30-7.8) (5-10). Turner allowed 12 hits, 1 walk and struck out 7. At bat, he had 3 hits, scored a run and had an RBI. LF Jake Howard (26-4.6) hit 2 doubles, scored 2 runs and had an RBI. For the Nationals, CF Tom Laarman (24-7.8) had 3 hits with a triple, stole a base, scored 3 runs and had an RBI.

He has won 4 in a row. Buchanan allowed 10 hits, 1 walk and struck out 5. RF Ed Wakefield (25-5.8) had 2 hits and 2 RBIs. LF Jake Howard (26-4.6) had 2 hits with a double, scored a run and had an RBI.

The Jingoes made 9 errors behind McClean. LF John Rodgers (33-4.4) had 2 hits with a triple, stole a base, scored a run and hah an RBI. CF John Meredith (30-6.0) had 3 hits with a home run, scored twice and had 3 RBIs.

Rochester (4) at Cincinnati (3) in 11 innings Game 2: Bill Henson (28-6.5) (2-3) over Tom Blomberg (27-4.7) (3-6). In 11 innings, Henson allowed 9 hits, 6 walks and struck out 3. Blomberg allowed 7 hits, 1 walk and struck out 1. 1B Pete Hinde (29-7.9) had 2 hits with a double, stole a base and scored a run. RF Joseph Thomson (33-7.3) had 3 hits with 2 doubles, scored a run and had 2 RBIs. For the Reds, 3B Frank Young (34-7.6) hit 2 triple and drew 3 walks, but only scored 1 run.

Omaha (5) at Pittsburgh (4) Game 1: Tom Lee (27-6.0) (9-4) over Tom Lilly (25-6.4) (19-9). Lee allowed 12 hits, 2 walks and struck out 7. Lilly allowed 10 hits, 3 walks and struck out 8. RF Bill Hammack (32-5.0) had 3 hits, scored a run and had an RBI. 1B Charlie Jeffers (34-4.8) had 3 hits with 2 doubles and scored 2 runs. For the Stogies, 2B Jack Green (32-5.5) had 4 hits with a triple, stole 3 bases, but only scored 1 run.

Omaha (40 at Pittsburgh (3) Game 2: Lee Sprague (25-3.5) (5-1) over Tom Adams (30-6.0) (18-7). Sprague allowed 9 hits, 3 walks and struck out 1. Adams allowed 8 hits, 2 walks and struck out 1. Omaha did not make an error, while Pittsburgh made 3. 2B Felix Hill (26-4.2) had 3 hits and scored a run. Omaha has now won 7 in a row, since getting their two ace pitchers back.

Baltimore (2) at Providence (3) in 10 innings Game 1: Egyptian Hooker (37-3.9) (6-6) over Pop Yurkovich (33-5.6) (9-17). Hooker allowed 8 hits, 1 walk and struck out 3. At bat, he had a hit and an RBI. Yurkovich allowed 6 hits, 2 walks and struck out 3. SS Bill Loschiavo (27-5.8) led off the bottom of the 10th with a single, advanced to 2nd on a passed ball, to 3rd on a groundout and scored on an error. He also hit a triple and scored another run.

Baltimore (5) at Providence (6) in 13 innings Game 2: Egyptian Hooker (37-3.9) (7-6) in relief of Frank McSherry (30-4.1) over Sammy O'Quinn (23-5.9) (4-3) in relief of Tom Wilmarth (25-5.4). Hooker pitched 3 scoreless innings, allowed 1 hit, a walk and struck out 2. 2B Bill Loschiavo (27-5.8) again scored the winning run. This time he triples and scored on an error. Manager/1B Paul Fenner (36-4.6) had 3 hits, stole a base, scored a run and had an RBI. SS Bill Parsons (27-8.3) had 3 hits, scored a run and had an RBI.

Milwaukee (5) at Kansas City (4) Game 1: Dan Burton (30-4.9) (19-14) over Al McClaughry (21-5.6) (3-1). Burton allowed 8 hits, no walks and struck out 1. McClaughry allowed 14 hits, no walks and struck out 5. At bat, he had a hit and scored a run. 1B Harold Bradley (26-5.1) had 3 hits with a double and an RBI. 2B Lou Bohus (25-5.4) had 3 hits, stole 2 bases and scored 2 runs. C Cy Morton (25-4.6), in his major league debut, had 2 hits and 2 RBIs.

Milwaukee (8) at Kansas City (6) Game 2: Tom Washam (32-6.1) (15-5) over Al McClaughry (21-5.6) (3-2). Washam allowed 10 hits, 5 walks and struck out 4. Milwaukee scored twice in the top of the 9th to take the lead. SS Herman Bonjour (32-5.6) had 3 hits with a double and a triple, scored 2 runs and had an RBI. LF Jack Shay (33-3.9) had 2 hits with a triple and a walk and scored 2 runs.

Brooklyn (12) at Chicago (7) Game 1: Henry Rawls (31-4.3) (10-14) over Pony Stanley (22-6.2) (7-8). Rawls allowed 9 hits, 1 walk and struck out 4. At bat, he had 2 hits with a triple, drew a walk and scored 2 runs. RF Tom Campbell (27-3.6) had 3 hits with a double and a triple, a walk, scored 2 runs and knocked in 3. LF Otis York (29-6.3) hit a double and a triple, scored a run and had an RBI. For the Colts, RF Candy Simpson (26-6.8) had 4 hits with his 6th home run of the year, scored 3 runs and had 2 RBIs.

Baltimore (2) at Providence (8): Sam Paul (30-5.4) (13-12) over Sammy O'Quinn (23-5.9) (4-4). Paul allowed 7 hits, 2 walks and struck out 4. At bat, he had a hit and 2 RBIs. The Grays knocked out 17 hits. C John Toler (27-6.4) had 3 hits with a double and scored a run. 3B Bill Parsons (27-8.3) had 3 hits with a double, stole a base and scored a run. 2B Tom Hepner (23-7.1) hit a double and a triple, scored a run and had 2 RBIs.

Milwaukee (11) at Kansas City (8): Tom Washam (32-6.1) (16-5) over Frank Parsons (31-5.8) (11-24). 32 hits by both teams. CF Harry Mihlbauer (27-5.7) had 2 hits with a home run, and 4 RBIs. He began the season with Brooklyn, but was released. 2B Lou Bohus (25-5.4) had 5 hits, scored 4 runs an had an RBI. C Cy Morton (25-4.6), after getting 2 hits in his major league debut, followed it up with 4 hits, scored 2 runs and had and RBI. So, we will have to wait for his third game and see whether he gets 6 or 8 hits to determine the pattern.

Brooklyn (4) at Chicago (5): Pete Rinehart (26-6.2) (12-13) over Al Green (22-3.8) (2-3). Rinehart allowed 8 hits, 3 walks and struck out 4. At bat, he had a hit. Green allowed 11 hits, 2 walks and struck out 4. At bat, he had a hit and a walk and scored a run. Trailing 3 to1, the Gladiators scored 3 times in the top of the 9th to take the lead, but RF Candy Simpson (26-6.8) hit a 2-run homer in the bottom of the 9th to win the game for the Colts. It was his 7th home run of the season. SS Henry Potter (31-6.4) had 3 hits with a triple, stole a base and scored 2 runs.

3B Bill Gordon (28-3.7) hit a home run in the top of the 9th to give the Red Caps the lead. It was his 5th home run of the season and 2nd in as many games.

Anderson allowed 6 hits, 1 walk and struck out 4. At bat, he had a hit, but inexplicably decided to try to steal 3rd base and was thrown out easily. That is the 2nd time he has tried that this year with the same result each time.

Peters allowed 7 hits, 6 walks and struck out 6.

We made 6 errors, 3 of them by C Joe Kotlyar (29-6.2), and Boston made 3. We did turn 3 double-plays, however.

CF Ben Spencer (24-4.2) had a hit and 2 walks, stole a base and scored a run, tore his ankle up making a catch and will miss the rest of the season. He was starting to look like the answer in center, scoring 6 runs in 5 games. 2B Jocko Cole (23-6.1) hit a double and scored a run. RF Jackie Porter (30-6.3) had 2 hits and 2 RBIs. SS Sam Boullion (25-4.8) hit a double and drew a walk and had an RBI.

For Boston, LF Charlie Warner (31-9.2) had 2 hits, stole a base and had 2 RBIs.

Grand National Association:
Omaha (7) at Pittsburgh (5) in 11 innings: Tom Lee (27-6.0) (10-4) over Tom Adams (30-6.0) (18-8). Neither starting pitcher was very impressive; there were 29 hits by both teams. But Lee Sprague (25-3.5) came on in the bottom of the 11th with runners at 2nd and 3rd and no outs and got 3 straight outs without allowing a run to score to preserve the win. CF Dave Cunningham (30-5.4) had 3 hits with a double and a triple, scored 2 runs and had an RBI. 2B Felix Hill (26-4.2) had 3 hits, scored a run and had 2 RBIs. 1B Charlie Jeffers (34-4.8) hit 2 doubles and scored 2 runs. Omaha has now won 8 in a row.

Tuesday, July 7, 1885

On our off day, I put P Tommy Shearin (27-5.7) on a train back to Syracuse and sent for P Ed Bush (25-5.3) and CF Fred Bianco (26-6.9). Bush's problem has been his control and he has walked 2 or fewer in 4 straight starts in A Ball. Shearin is just too hittable for the likes of the Liberty League and our park is not suited to his tendency to allow deep fly balls.

Grand National Association:
Omaha (1) at Pittsburgh (6): Tom Lilly (25-6.4) (20-9) over Lee Sprague (25-3.5) (5-2). Lilly allowed 5 hits, 1 walk and struck out 10. At bat, he had 3 hits with a double and 3 RBIs. Sprague allowed 8 hits, no walks and struck out 3. The Mutuals made 7 errors.

Baltimore (12) at Providence (1): Pop Yurkovich (33-5.6) (10-17) over Egyptian Hooker (37-3.9) (7-7). Yurkovich allowed 8 hits, 2 walks and struck out 7. At bat, he hit a double, drew a walk, scored 2 runs and had 3 RBIs. Hooker did not pitch well, but the Grays did not help him any with 7 errors. 2B Jake Steitz (26-4.7) had 3 hits with a triple, scored 2 runs and had 4 RBIs. SS Smith Yocum (27-5.5) had 2 hits and a walk and scored 3 runs.

Milwaukee (11) at Kansas City (3): Dan Burton (30-4.9) (20-14) over Frank Parsons (31-5.8) (11-25). Burton allowed 8 hits, 1 walk and struck out 4. At bat, he had a hit, scored a run and had an RBI. 2B Lou Bohus (25-5.4) had 2 hits with a triple, scored 2 runs and had 2 RBIs. 3B Andy Byl (31-4.0) had 3 hits with a double, scored a run and had 2 RBIs. C Cy Morton (25-4.6) had 3 hits, scored 2 runs and had an RBI. I was wrong about the pattern. In his first 3 games, he has had hit totals of 2, 4 and 3. So, the next game should be 5 hits. He is 9 for 13 (.692) to start his career, though they are all singles.

Brooklyn (4) at Chicago (9): Pony Stanley (22-6.2) (8-8) over Henry Rawls (31-4.3) (10-15). Stanley allowed 10 hits, 1 walk and struck out 3. C George Sandefur (29-5.8) had 2 hits with a double, scored 2 runs and had an RBI. 2B John Sullivan (39-4.0) had 3 hits with a triple, scored a run and had 2 RBIs. For the Gladiators, C Jim Granier (30-5.7) had 3 hits with a double and a home run.

We begin a 4 game series against manager John Burton (46-3.6) and his Jingoes today. We won 3 of 4 against them when we last met in the middle of May. They come in on a 3 game winning streak. They are currently last in runs scored with 3.7 per game (Detroit is 3rd with 4.9). They are 7th in runs allowed with 5.3 per game (Detroit is still #1 with 4.0).

Bill McLean, Roch. (39-6.0) (R 4-21 2.98 9.4-2.6-2.9 H-BB-K/9) vs. William McLeod, Det. (26-5.6) (R 17-5 1.80 6.6-2.8-4.4)

Won - 5 to 4 in 10 innings

With the scored tied at 4, 2B Doc Coe (28-4.7) led off the top of the 9th for the Jingoes with a triple, but Rochester did not score. In the top of the 10th, SS Bill Rush (36-3.7) led off with a single, stole second and ended up at 3rd when the catcher threw the ball away. So the go ahead run was 90 feet away with no outs, but McLeod struck out 3 in a row to hold them in check. 1B Harley Becker (31-6.8) then led off the bottom of the 10th by knocking one over the left field fence to win the game.

In 10 innings, McLeod allowed 9 hits, 2 walks and struck out 6.

McClean allowed 9 hits, 2 walks and struck out 4.

Each team made 5 errors.

2B Jocko Cole (23-6.1) had 2 hits, scored a run and had 2 RBIs. LF Ben Smith (26-6.7) had 2 hits, a walk, stole 2 bases and had an RBI. SS Sam Swanger (32-4.8) had 2 hits and stole 2 bases.

His defense helped him out by only making 2 errors and turning 3 double-plays. Peters allowed 8 hits, 4 walks and struck out 5. His defense made 6 errors, but did turn a pair of twin killings. In the bottom of the 12th, P Ellard walked with 1 out and went to 2nd on an error. He then lit out for 3rd with the intention of stealing a base and the catcher threw the ball into the outfield and he scored the winning run. Ellard is no blazer, but he has above average speed and that is his 2nd steal of the season. He stole 8 last year in A Ball. He was a pretty fair first baseman back in the day. With the Red Caps loss and our win, the Wolverines are back in first place!

We begin a 4 game series with manager/P Lou Townley and his Nationals today. We are 6-2 against them this season. We beat them 3 of 4 at their place 3 and a half weeks ago, but we did not have to face Townley. They are currently 5th in runs scored with 4.8 per game (Detroit is #3 with 5.0). They are 6th in runs allowed with 4.8 per game (Detroit is still #1 with 4.0).

We were down 6 to 5 entering the bottom of the 9th. PH Jack Warren (33-7.2) led off with a single. CF Joe Kraus (28-7.9) bunted him over to 2nd, though I did not like the play. I would rather have had Warren try to steal since their catcher was nothing special and Townley was not very good at holding runners close and then we would have 3 shots at knocking Warren home rather than 2. But as it turned out, we only needed 1. 1B Harley Becker (31-6.8) doubled to left to tie the game. He then tried to steal third (another thing I did not like at the time). The catcher threw the ball into the outfield and Becker scored to end the game.

McLeod allowed 9 hits, walked 3 and struck out 3. At bat, he had a hit, scored a run and had an RBI.

We had 11 hits and made 2 errors. Washington made 6.
