Any chance we can get this series switched back to TBS? Wow Buck and McCarver are horrible. And the Keyhole Dancer turns my stomach.

The reason they need two guys to broadcast the game is because if either of the two were not in the equation, you'd be left with only one broadcaster.

Tigers 1, Red Sox 0. [Boxscore]
Summary: Cats out-pitch Sox in a knuckle-biter of a game. Pitching: Sanchez presented a contradictory picture - on one paw, he had 12 punch-outs and yielded no hits in an utterly masterful display of pitching prowess, but on the other paw, he walked 6 and had 2 wild pitches. Umpire Joe West's expanded strike zone had a lot to do with that, but it was still an unusual display of wildness from Sanchez, who tossed 109 pitches over 6.1 innings. Irregardless, he kept the Sox under control, which is what mattered, and struck out the side TWICE. Impressive! (He had 4 strikeouts in 1 inning, only the 2nd time in the post-season this has happened. (Overall of the Cubs in the 1908 WS was the other); he's also the first Detroit pitcher to ever do this feat.) With the win, his 2013 post-season record goes to 1-1, 4.35 ERA, 1.55 WHIP, with 18 punch-outs in 10.1 innings. Alburquerque took over mound duties in the 7th inning, and he was flawless, whiffing two Red Sox and getting a ground-out on the other. For that, he earned a Hold. This brings his record to 0-1, 1 Hold, 5.40 ERA, 1.80 WHIP, with 4 strikeouts in 1.2 innings. Veras came in to start off the 8th, and he more than did the job, gassing both batters he faced. He earned a Hold, bringing his record this post-season to 0-0, 1 Hold, 0.00 ERA, 0.86 WHIP, with 5 whiffs in 2.1 innings. Smyly was brought in to face Ortiz, one of the AL's most dangerous hitters this year - and got him to fly out to center in an 7-pitch at-bat. A well-earned Hold was credited to Smyly, bringing his stats to 0-0, 2 Holds, 0.00 ERA, 2.25 WHIP, with 2 K's in 1.1 innings. Benoit assumed the mound for the 9th and gave up the sole hit the Sox had to Nava (to angry and disappointed reactions from much of Tiger Fandom, who wanted the team-collective no-hitter. I don't think I've heard so much growling, angry hisses, and cat-calls - and that was just from me. Only God knows what the rest of the nation was doing.) An out later, the pinch-runner, Berry, stole second, making things a bit more dicey. Benoit decided enough was enough, and induced Bogaerts to pop-out to Iglesias to save the game. With that, his record goes to 0-0, 3 Saves, 4.15 ERA, 1.15 WHIP, with 7 whiffs in 4.1 innings. Offense: The Cats had their chances with 9 hits, 3 walks, and 2 HBP - and failed to capitalize on these opportunities as they stranded 12 on 1-11 hitting with RISP. Gotta give some credit to Boston's bullpen, they're very good. The list! (All stats are 2013 post-season.) Jackson, 1-5 (.120), a single and 2 strikeouts (15). Hunter, 1-5 (.167), a double (1) in the 9th. Miggy, 1-3 (.261), a single in the 1st, and a walk (2) and run scored (2) in the 6th. His post-season on-base-safely streak runs to 30 games. Fielder, 1-3 (.286), a single in the 1st, HBP in the 6th, and a walk (2) in the 8th. Peralta, 3-4 (.500), 2 doubles (5th and 8th innings, 2 doubles in the post-season), and a run-scoring single in the 6th to give him his team-leading 6th RBI. Infante, 0-3 (.190) with an intentional walk (2nd BB, 1st IBB) in the 8th. Avila, 1-4 (.158), a single in the 5th. Iglesias, 1-3 (.133), a HBP in the 7th and a single in the 9th. Defense: Stolen bases allowed, 2: Sanchez-Avila (1st inning), Benoit-Avila (9th inning). Next game: Sunday, Detroit @ Boston, 8:15 Eastern. National TV: Fox. National Radio: ESPNRadio. Detroit local radio: 97.1 The Ticket. Boston local radio: WEEI 93.7, WUFC 1510 (Spanish). Probable starters: Scherzer (2-0, 3.00 ERA) vs. Buchholz (0-0, 4.50 ERA). Scherzer is 2-0, 3.00 ERA in 2 games; 1-1, 2.57 ERA in 2 starts versus Boston this season. Buchholz is 0-0, 4.50 ERA in 1 start; has not faced Detroit this season. |

Literally, the ALDS has me ready to scrap my degree and go to Specs Howard to be a broadcaster. At least I wouldn't call JV as Scherzer three times in the same inning... Most of us in the D are just muting the TV and syncing to the broadcast on 97.1... hard to mess with Dan and Jim!

My problem is, they never shut up. There is no break from the blather. With all the graphics available in this day and age, I really wish a network would give the "no announcers" deal a try again. I remember them trying years ago for an NFL game. I know I can mute the tv, but I like the sound of the crowd.

I'd rather have Rod and Mario instead of whatever generic noise-makers Fox uses. Just doesn't seem like Tigers baseball without them in the booth.

Rod and Mario are great, but I'd still rather have Dan and Jim. TRULY they are Tigers baseball now... and I never thought I'd say that after Ernie...

Sorry Randy - It was a joke. McCarver is known/loathed for explaining the obvious and passing it off as 'expert' commentary.

Ah, got it. The captioning isn't always complete, especially with live stuff, so I miss a lot of the byplay and stuff like this.
Thanks for explaining, Chris.

Less than 8 hours to go for game 2, and Scherzer is on the mound. Think the Cats can pull another win off?
And the grand question of the day: Can Jackson go one game without striking out, or is he determined to get into the record books that way? |

Jason Beck of MLB.com gave an update (amongst other things) about Rondon. If you're interested, go and give it a read.
It doesn't look like we'll see him again until ST. Pity. He's developed into a pretty darn good pitcher with a bright future ahead of him. |
