1965 World Series results
1965 World Series: Detroit Tigers vs. San Francisco Giants
Results Game 1, October 7th, 1965, Candlestick Park Schaal, San Francisco Start World Series Strong with Home Win The San Francisco Giants started the World Series in dominant fashion, blowing out the visiting Detroit Tigers at Candlestick Park by a score of 12-4 and securing an early 1-0 lead in the best-of-7 series. Giants third baseman Paul Schaal had a standout performance. He was 3-4 with a home run, a double, and a walk. He scored 3 times and drove in 3. A key moment came in the bottom of the fourth inning when Giants pitcher Jim Maloney socked a 1-1 curveball to right-center for a 2-run triple, putting San Francisco up, 4-0. "There was a kid in the stands with a sign that said 'San Francisco Giants (probably) 1965 World Series Champions'," Maloney told reporters after the game. "I told him, 'Premature, but I like the confidence.'" The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Candlestick Park in San Francisco. Giants lead series 1-0 Game 2, October 8th, 1965, Candlestick Park Detroit Win Evens Series at 1 Behind a bravura effort from starter Denny McLain, the Detroit Tigers topped the San Francisco Giants by the score of 5-0 and got their first win in the 1965 World Series. McLain threw 9.0 innings of shutout ball for the Tigers. The win moves Detroit into a 1-1 tie with San Francisco. McLain, a native of Chicago, Illinois, was dealing all game. He kept San Francisco hitters off-balance, while giving the Tigers 9 quality innings. McLain threw 134 pitches, allowing 4 hits and striking out 8. "We're happy," McLain told reporters after the win. "When you're in the playoffs, you've got to treat every game like it could be your last." The next game is set to be played on October 10th, 1965 at Tiger Stadium in Detroit. Series tied 1-1 Game 3, October 10th, 1965, Tiger Stadium Allison Blasts Tigers, Giants Take Game 3, 8-4 Riding the 3-hit performance of left fielder Bob Allison, the San Francisco Giants got a road win against the Detroit Tigers, 8-4, in Game 3 of the World Series. Allison went 3 for 5 with a home run and 2 singles. He scored 2 times and drove in 3 for the Giants, who now lead the best-of-7 series, 2 games to 1. San Francisco used the timely hitting of Don Demeter to capture the win. The right fielder stroked a 2-run double in the top of the seventh inning to put the Giants on top, 6-4. It was his only hit in 4 at-bats, but he made it count. Tigers manager Randy Reese did not take questions after the game, telling assembled reporters that he would hold a press conference "if and when we win the World Series." The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Tiger Stadium in Detroit. Giants lead series 2-1 Game 4, October 11th, 1965, Tiger Stadium Almost There: San Francisco On Cusp of World Series Triumph After 6-1 Win Already in trouble in the World Series, the Detroit Tigers knew they needed a strong outing from their starter and good production on offense. They got one of the two. The Tigers failed to put much together on offense and wasted an impressive 7-inning effort from left-handed starter Marcelino Lopez, falling, 6-1, to the San Francisco Giants at Tiger Stadium. The loss put the Tigers in an even deeper hole -- they now trail San Francisco 3-1. San Francisco used the timely hitting of Harmon Killebrew to seize the win. The first baseman stroked a 2-run single in the top of the eighth inning to put the Giants on top, 3-1. It was his only hit in 4 at-bats, but it was a game-changer. "We aren't quitting," Detroit manager Randy Reese said. "Yeah, the odds are definitely in their favor, but they've got to earn it." The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Tiger Stadium in Detroit. Giants lead series 3-1 Game 5, October 12th, 1965, Tiger Stadium Giants Take Title With a 2-0 win over the Detroit Tigers at Tiger Stadium today, the San Francisco Giants wrapped up their 6th title in team history. The Giants left little doubt who was the better team. Celebrating a banner year, "team" was the word of the day in the victorious clubhouse after the game. "Hitting, pitching, fielding; those are all things you need to win, but most importantly you need a team, a team that works together toward the same collective goal," said San Francisco manager Harl Maggert. "Our players felt that way all year, and they played that way. When one guy had an off day, 24 others stepped up their game and filled the void." A jovial mood filled the air as San Francisco celebrated into the night. The city's mayor said parade plans were underway and a "huge celebration" would be in order. "I hope they have a big celebration," Detroit manager Randy Reese said. "They deserved to win this series and they deserve to celebrate it." Giants win series 4-1 World Series MVP: P Jim Maloney (San Francisco Giants) |
