I was frightened awake this morning, too early to even look a the clock and see what time it was. I had a horrible dream or dreams, because I think I was scaring myself out of them all night. People kept running up to me out of nowhere and ripping pieces of paper in my face and laughing maniacally. Others were flailing their arms about in a panic and their arms were all rubbery and did not seem to have any bones in them. The first GM I ever worked for, who has been dead for over 10 years, called me into his office and chewed me out for not having my shoes tied and told me he was going to have to let me go because the chairs I had bought for the clubhouse were all too flimsy and had snapped into pieces when anyone sat on them. My own mother, who is still alive, acted like she was talking to me from the hereafter and asked me why I hadn't given them the milk every day like she asked. Given who the milk? "The little puppies!" she wailed and held up a litter of them in her arms and they all had mangled legs and tails. A little girl brought me a bunch of daisies and asked me to put them on the grave of Giant Jim.........

Baucom has gone back to Jacksonville to be examined by Dr. Pepper, but there is no hope that he will refute the diagnosis of the Buffalo doctor. Pia filed the paperwork to put Baucom on the DL and recall P Al Calice (24-R) from Daytona Beach (A). Calice can work on his issues with us now, because the season is over as far as winning the division. Baucom was the rock that everything else was built on. We are down to a 2 man rotation with Del Warwick and Mike Marsh. And Marsh is having his own injury issues and I would not be surprised if he does not last the season. And our offense is way off form what it was last season and does not seem capable of winning games with less than stellar pitching.

Jacksonville Jays (21-12 .636 0 GA tied for 1st place in the Southern Division) at
Buffalo Bombers (17-14 .548 3 GB in 3rd place in the Northern Division)

JAX: Del Warwick (30-L) (3-4 2.31 ERA 50.2 IP, 50 H, 3 HR, 6 BB, 32 SO) Gold Glove(02)
BUF: Steve Cron (31-L) (4-2 2.70 ERA 53.1 IP, 49 H, 1 HR, 7 BB, 20 SO) All-Star

Warwick gave up 2 runs (1 earned) on 10 hits and no walks with 4 strikeouts in 6.2 innings last time out in a win.

Cron is their #1 starter. He was 17-14 with a 2.81 ERA in 256 IP last year and 18-9, tying for MLB lead in wins, with a 2.43 ERA in an MLB leading 263 IP in 2003. He has tied for the MLB lead in games started every season. He is 3-1 in 4 starts against the Jays in his career with a shutout and a 1.97 ERA. 32 IP, 31 H, 3 HR, 6 BB, 19 SO.

Lineups: Pos Name (Age-Bats BA-AB-HR-RBI-OPS-SB DEF)

Game Start: 2:05 PM
Ballpark: Sportsman's Park
Weather: 52 F, Partly Cloudy, with a 12 MPH wind blowing out to left
Attendance: 10,975

Top of the First
Charlie Faber strikes out on 3 pitches. Cal Doty takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. Ray McDonald grounds into a force at 2nd, 4-6. Tom McDowell strikes out.

Bottom of the First

Pete Hudzik gets beaned with the second pitch of the game. It is hard to concentrate on the action.... Charlie Childs lines a hit to left. Frank Cohen grounds into a 6-4-3 double play and Hudzik scores. No, he just goes to 3rd. Bob Sedrick grounds out to 3rd.

If the players are feeling anything like I am, we have no hope of winning today....

We need someone to do something to snap us out of theses doldrums and get us excited and Cal Doty does it! In the bottom of the 2nd, with 2 runners on and only 1 out, Dick Lyles lines one to left that looks like a sure run-scoring hit, but Doty makes a diving catch and hops up and fires to 2nd to double off the runner!!

Alright, boys! Let's score some runs!

We don't score in the 3rd, but everyone hit the ball hard and P Del Warwick had a hit. In the bottom of the 3rd, with 2 outs, Charlie Childs beat out an infield hit. Frank Cohen lines a hit to right and Childs went for 3rd, but Ray McDonald threw him out!

Top of the Sixth
With 1 out, Ray McDonald grounds a hit to right. With McDonald running, Tom McDowell swings at a 3-2 pitch and misses, but McDonald is safe at 2nd. They walk the lefty Jack Washburn intentionally to face Gary McKellar and he lines a hit to left and McDonald scores! 1 to 0, Jays!

Bottom of the Sixth
Frank Cohen lines a hit to center.... Bob Sedrick doubles to right.... The Bullpen gets up. With the infield in, Tom Hamm grounds a hit to left and Cohen scores... Tie Game: 1 to 1. I thought for sure with our newfound enthusiasm, we would go on to win, 10 to 0..... Dave Lloyd lines a hit to right and Sedrick scores and Hamm beats the throw to 3rd... 2 to 1, Bombers. Call to the Bullpen: Bob Craig (27-R). Charlie Russell walks on 4 pitches to load the bases up with no outs.... Dick Lyles grounds into a 4-2-3 double play!! P Steve Cron grounds out to 2nd!

Top of the Seventh
Don Kern draws a walk. P Bob Craig is allowed to hit, because whoever we send up there, Manny will have them bunt and Craig is one of the best bunters on the team. So, of course, he bunts into a force at 2nd, 2-6.... With 2 outs, Cal Doty grounds a double over the 3rd base bag and P Craig scores form 1st! Tie Game: 2 to 2! Ray McDonald flies out to the warning track in right....

Top of the Eighth
With 1 out, Jack Washburn grounds one to 2nd, but Dave Lloyd throws it away for a 2 base error! Washburn steals 3rd! With the infield in, Gary McKellar swings at a 3-2 pitch and grounds out to short and Washburn holds.... Bart Daw flies out to deep left....

Bottom of the Eighth

The Bullpen is ready. Bob Sedrick knocks one off the wall in left center for a triple.... Call to the Bullpen: All-Star Albert Davies (28-L). Tom Hamm strikes out! Dave Lloyd grounds out to 3rd and Sedrick stays put! We walk Charlie Russell intentionally. Dick Lyles pops out to 3rd!

Top of the Ninth
P Steve Cron is at 116 pitches. 8-9-1 up for us. Don Kern takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4! Pinch-runner: Frank Roadman (30-R). PH T.R. Hunter (28-R) grounds a hit to right and Roadman beats the throw to 3rd! Charlie Faber pops out to 2nd.... Cal Doty pops out to left and Roadman tags up and gets thrown out by Tom Hamm.......

Bottom of the Ninth
New Pitcher: Johnny Groom (28-R). T.R. Hunter stays in to play 2nd and Bob Hutson (22-L) is in to catch. 9-1-2 up for the Bombers. PH Joel McCormick (36-R), 2 for 8 in this series, strikes out! PH Vern Stewart (24-L), a rookie, who is 0 for 7 in his career, but was the #36 prospect this Spring and was hitting .373 in the American Association (A) before being called up, grounds a hit to right.... PH Mickey Lynn (32-L), 0 for 8 this series, but almost guaranteed to hit a home run off P Groom, grounds into a 4-6-3 double play!!

Extras!
We are 3-0 so far this season.

Top of the Tenth
New Pitcher: Billy Temple (28-R), their 2-time All-Star(02,04) closer, who pitched a scoreless inning yesterday. He is 2-1 with 7 SV and a 1.08 ERA in 16.2 IP with 8 H allowed and 17 SO. 3-4-5 up for us. They go down in order on 2 ground outs to the pitcher and a pop out to short....

Bottom of the Tenth

3-4-5 up for them.... Frank Cohen walks.... Bob Sedrick grounds into a 3-6-3 double play!! Tom Hamm hits a 2-2 pitch over the center field wall....

Lost - 3 to 2

We had 6 hits and made no errors
Buffalo had 12 hits and made 1 error

We turned 5 double plays, 4 of them GDP.

Del Warwick went 5+ innings, allowed 2 runs, 9 hits, 1 walk, 2 HBP and struck out 3. At bat, he had a hit.

Steve Cron went 9 innings, gave us 2 runs, 6 hits, 5 walks (1 INT) and struck out 6. 136 pitches.
RHP Billy Temple (W 3-1) pitched 1 perfect inning.

I prefer pretending that the nightmare is still going on and that we'll all wake up now and it's all not real.

Can't be long.

(looks at wristwatch)

Any second now.

(nothing happens)

Right about now.

(nestles on his shirt)

I've had these dreams before, where somebody looks in the naughty folder on your laptop, or somebody you love lies in the road, conscious, about to be run over, and you can't rescue them because you're superglued to a chair. Or like the bestest pitcher ever suddenly coming apart - I mean, that's all impossible. Must be a dream.

(looks around)

Man, this dream looks real.

(slow whine)

(rolls back into a ball)

I am not worried about bad luck today! They can't do anything worse to us than they already have......

We are back home to play the Charlotte Hornets a 3 game series over the weekend. They just split 4 games in Ottawa. We split a pair of games with them in Charlotte to open the season. They are 6th in scoring with 4.40 runs per game (Jacksonville is #9 with 3.77). We have each hit 26 HR and we have out-walked them by a few, but they are outhitting us by 31 points (.259 to .228). Only Syracuse at .215 has a worse BA than us. The Hornets are 10th in fewest runs allowed with 4.11 per game (Jacksonville is #1 with 2.80, but that will not last without Jim Baucom). Their run differential is +10, 8th in the MLB, and ours is +34, 3rd best.

Charlotte Hornets (19-16 .543 3 GB in 4th place in the Southern Division) at
Jacksonville Jays (22-13 .629 0 GA tied for 1st place in the Southern Division)

CHAR: Rick Cox (34-R) (4-1 3.24 ERA 41.2 IP, 39 H, 1 HR, 11 BB, 15 SO) Ace(01)/All-Star(4: 01-04)
JAX: Mike Marsh (24-R) (4-1 1.12 ERA 36.2 IP, 23 H, 1 HR, 11 BB, 26 SO) All-Star

Cox, the 2001 Ace Award winner, is no longer their #1 starter and he has lost some velocity, but he still has his good control and he keeps the ball in the park mostly. He was 16-11 with a 3.14 ERA in 235 IP last year and 18-8, tying for the MLB lead in wins, with a 2.22 ERA in 255.1 IP in 2003. He is 9-2 in 13 starts against the Jays in his career with 2 shutouts and a 1.65 ERA. 103.1 IP, 82 H, 3 HR, 19 BB, 60 SO. We have lost more games to Cox than any other pitcher and his ERA is the best of any opponent with 8 or more starts.

Marsh gave up 2 unearned runs on 5 hits and 4 walks with 2 strikeouts in 7 innings last time out in a win.

Lineups: Pos Name (Age-Bats BA-AB-HR-RBI-OPS-SB DEF)

Trudy the Trainer has cleared CF Dickie Stemen (30-R), who was our hottest hitter on the team before getting hurt, to play, so he was activated from the DL. Problem is, there is no one I want to send down. I guess it has to be CF Gary McKellar (35-R), but he has a .720 OPS and deserves to stay.

Charlotte Hornets (19-18 .514 5 GB in 4th place in the Southern Division) at
Jacksonville Jays (24-13 .649 1 GA in 1st place in the Southern Division)

CHAR: Frank Lytle (31-R) (0-2 7.84 ERA 10.1 IP, 10 H, 3 HR, 8 BB, 11 SO)
JAX: Ernesto Noyola (25-R) (A Ball: 2-3 4.50 ERA 42 IP, 42 H, 3 HR, 14 BB, 32 SO)

This will be Lytle's 1st start of the season. He was 4-4 with a 4.59 ERA in 12 starts (35 G) and 113.2 IP last year and 1-3 with a 4.66 ERA in 9 starts (20 G) and 73.1 IP in 2003. He is 1-1 in 3 starts against the Jays in his career with a 2.41 ERA. 18.2 IP, 10 H, 1 HR, 13 BB, 18 SO.

Noyola is making his 1st start for Jays since 2003. He was 0-4 in 5 starts that year with a 5.81 ERA. He has allowed 12 HR in 81.2 IP in his career. His last 3 starts for Dayton Beach (A) were all good ones.

Monday Morning Report

Player of the Week - Keith Meyer, 3B, Memphis (30-L .340/.400/.514) Had 15 hits with 2 2B, 2 HR, 1 BB, 2 SO, 0 SB, 1 CS, 7 R and 7 RBI in 7 G (6 GS) (8th career PoW)

(Slash lines are for the season, not the week)

May 9 - Frank Cane (29-R) of Syracuse pitched a 1 hit shutout at home versus New Orleans. He walked 2 and struck out 6. The lone hit was a 2-out single in the 1st. He is now tied for the MLB lead with 3 shutouts. It is the 9th shutout of his career. He is now 7-1 with a 1.29 ERA in 8 starts. I am not to concerned with him keeping Jim Baucom from leading the MLB in categories because he is injury prone and has never yet pitched enough innings in a season to qualify for the ERA title. The Sycamores won, 5 to 0.
May 9 - Mike Elizondo (26-R) of Columbus did Frank Cane 1 better and pitched a no-hitter at home versus Birmingham. He walked 1 and struck out 6. It is the 6th no-hitter in MLB history and the 2nd in the last 5 days. 3 of the 6 MLB no-hitters have been tossed by Explorers, including the only perfect game (3 different pitchers). At bat, he went 2 for 2 with a double and scored a run. He is tied with Cane with 3 shutouts on the season and now has 13 in his career. The Explorers won, 3 to 0, and only had 5 hits themselves.
May 10 - John Wilson (30-R) of Louisville pitched a 4 hit shutout at Providence. He walked 1 and struck out 6. It is the 2nd shutout his career. He is now 4-3 with a 2.62 ERA in 7 starts. The Colonels won, 2 to 0, with 2 runs in the top of the 9th.
May 10 - Charlotte lost 2001 All-Star P Ron Simon (32-R) for at least a calendar year with elbow ligament reconstruction surgery. He was 2-0 with a 2.31 ERA in 7 starts this season.
May 11 - Dave Gray (35-R) of Memphis pitched a 4 hit shutout at home versus Hartford. He walked 2 and struck out 3. 130 pitches thrown. It is the 10th shutout of his career. He is now 2-2 with a 3.76 ERA in 8 starts. The Mules won, 3 to 0.
May 12 - Carlos Santiago (27-L) of Louisville pitched a 4 hit shutout at Providence. He walked 1 and struck out 1. 92 pitches thrown. It is the 9th shutout of his career. He is now 5-3 with a 2.30 ERA in 8 starts. The Colonels won, 5 to 0.
May 12 - CF Victor Ocasio of New Orleans had 3 hits with a home run and 5 RBI at Syracuse. The Pelicans won, 9 to 4.
May 12 - Jack Brown (29-R) of Charlotte pitched a 5 hit shutout at Ottawa. He walked 3 and struck out 6. At bat, he had 2 hits, scored a run and had an RBI. It is the 8th shutout of his career. He is now 2-0 in 2 starts (7 G) with a 2.73 ERA. The Hornets won, 6 to 0.
May 12 - In a football game, the Memphis Mules won at home versus Hartford, 23 to 16. The Mules had an 11 run 1st inning and a 10 run 3rd. 3B Keith Meyer (30-L) of Memphis set a new MLB record by going 6 for 6 in a 9 inning game. He had a double, scored 4 runs and had 3 RBI. For Hartford, 1B Vinny Puga (28-R) had 4 hits, scored 4 runs and had an RBI. No non-pitchers were used in the game by either team. Edwin Torres (31-L) of Hartford deserves special mention for pitching 4 scoreless inning of relief!
May 13 - LF/2B Tim Dawson (28-R) of New Orleans went 5 for 5 with a double and a home run and 2 RBI at Richmond, but the Pelicans lost, 9 to 3.
May 14 - Danny Belsky (32-R) pitched a 3 hit shutout at Providence. He walked 2 and struck out 8. At bat, he hit a double and had 2 RBI. It is the 4th shutout of his career. He is now 3-2 with a 2.50 ERA in 8 starts. The Bombers won, 3 to 0.

Yesterday the Charlotte Hornets responded to our sweep of them by making a pair of trades. They sent 3B Tom Morris (31-R) to Buffalo for P Jerry Doherty (27-L) and minor league SS Cleon Gordon (23-R).

Morris was batting .306/.398/.431 in 72 AB with 0 HR and 11 RBI and 0 SB.

Doherty is 3-5 with a 3.48 ERA in 8 starts and was an All-Star last year when he went 15-11 with a 3.04 ERA in 213 IP. Gordon was a 2nd round pick in the 2002 B Leagues Draft and was a Top 100 prospect last year (#64), but was not in the Top 100 this Spring.

That seems like a lot to give up for Morris, a career .231 hitter with a .706 OPS. Charlotte sure needed the pitching help, though, with 2 good starters on the DL. Buffalo does not seem to have anyone very good to take Doherty's place in the rotation.....

The Hornets also sent CF Ed Northrup (26-L), currently on the DL and expected to be out for another month, to Providence for RF Carter Bates (35-S), CF Bobby Raker (24-R) and minor league P Jim Greer (23-L).

Northrup was batting .286/.311/.398 in 98 AB with 1 HR and 11 RBI and 9 SB. He hit .290/.331/.356 in 421 AB with 1 HR and 38 RBI and 31 SB as a rookie last year. He is a very good defender.

Bates was batting .279/.340/.395 in 43 AB with 1 HR and 1 RBI and 0 SB. Raker was batting .155/.210/.259 in 58 AB with 1 HR and 5 RBI and 1 SB. He was the 7th overall pick in the 2003 B Leagues Draft. But he is a slacker. Greer was a 4th round pick in this year's B Leagues Draft and was the #53 prospect this Spring.

Also, Louisville offered us a trade of 2B Ron Lerche (26-R) for Cal Doty. Lerche hit .296/.357/.484 in 608 AB with 27 HR and 83 RBI and 11 SB last year as an All-Star. But he has not played yet this year and is even more injury prone than Doty, so we passed.

The New Orleans Pelicans are here to play a short 2 game set. They lost 2 of 3 in Richmond over the weekend, but won 3 of 4 in Syracuse before that. We split a pair of games in New Orleans, April 26-27. Only 6 total runs were scored in the 2 games by both teams. They are 13th in scoring with 3.19 runs per game (Jacksonville is #8 with 4.00). The Pelicans are 10th in fewest runs allowed with 4.24 per game (Jacksonville is still #1 for now with 2.84). Their run differential is -39, 15th in the MLB, and ours is +44, now 2nd best to Richmond (+49), our next opponents.

Trudy's report on Johnny Groom is back spasms that she thinks will bother him for about a week. He can pitch with it, if needed, she says, so we will not put him on the DL, since their is no one pitching worth a darn in Daytona Beach (A) and we'll just try to avoid using him, if we can. I am not so worried about losing him to a more serious injury anyway, since I do not care for him much.

The Richmond Robins are here to play a 4 game series through the weekend. They split a pair of games at home with Charlotte on Monday and Tuesday. We were 5-9 against them last year when they finished 88-74 in 2nd place in the South. They were the only team we had a losing record against last season and we have never won the season series with them and have lost more games to them than any other team in our history. And it is not close. We are 19-37 (.339) all-time against them. The 2nd most losses we have against another team is against Louisville (28-33 .459). We are 11-21 (.344) against Providence. The Robins lead the MLB in scoring with 5.10 runs per game (Jacksonville is #8 with 4.03). They are hitting .310 as a team though 40 games. The all-time MLB record for a season is .282 by the Robins last year, which was 10 points better than anyone else had ever done (Buffalo - .272 in 2001). We are hitting a measly .241, 11th in the MLB, but it is on the rise. The Robins are 8th in fewest runs allowed with 4.05 per game (Jacksonville is still #1 with 2.95, but it is getting higher and higher). Their run differential is +42, 2nd best in the MLB to our +43. Ottawa is 3rd at +41. This is the series where we will officially end our hopes of repeating as division champs....

Coreano gave up 4 runs on 9 hits, 2 home runs and no walks with 1 strikeout in 3 innings last time out in a no decision that we won in the bottom of the 9th.

We are in Syracuse to play the defending MLB champions a 4 game series through the weekend. They just split a pair of games here with Indianapolis. We were 5-3 against them last year when they finished 100-62 in 1st place in the North. But then we lost the Millennial Cup to them in 6 games..... They are last in scoring with 2.93 runs per game (Jacksonville is up to #7 with 4.33). They are 4th in the MLB in HR with 38, but are only hitting .212. .238 is the worst BA any team has ever finished the season with (Ottawa - 2003). They Sycamores are tied for 2nd in fewest runs allowed with 3.36 per game (Jacksonville is still #1 with 3.02). Their run differential is -19, 12th in the MLB, and ours is +60, now #1! They have won the Northern Division every season so far, but are below .500 this year.

Jacksonville Jays (30-16 .652 1 GA in 1st place in the Southern Division) at

SYR: David Huerta (24-L) (1-2 1.74 ERA 46.2 IP, 35 H, 2 HR, 18 BB, 38 SO)

Coreano gave up 4 runs on 7 hits and 4 walks with 3 strikeouts in 4.2 innings last time out in a loss.

Huerta was 7-5 with a 3.05 ERA in 109.1 IP as a rookie last year. We faced him once and he held us to 1 run on 4 hits and no walks with 9 strikeouts in 7.1 innings in a no decision. We beat him in the Millennial Cup, scoring 4 runs (3 earned) on 7 hits and 1 walk with 6 strikeouts in 7 IP.
