THE WEEK IN REVIEW:

NEXT WEEK: 1 @ Dallas Texans (49-45) 3 vs Washington Jets (36-59) OFF DAY 2 vs Houston Roughriders (52-43)

ABL HAPPENINGS:
7/9:
Atlanta announced the signing of FA SP Jared Over (27 4*) to a 1 year 810K contract. Over was the 22nd overall selection in the 2018 draft by the Lexington Rebels and was unable to find a home in Free Agency this past winter.
7/10:
Melvin Torres (PHI) went 9 and struck out 10 in a 6-hit CG 4-0 win over 1st place San Francisco. In that game Bears 1B Juan Buena was hurt and will miss at least a month. The Bears hold a slim 2 game lead in the PL's California Division.
Toshiaki Otani (LV) tossed a CG 4-hitter for his 6th win (6-7 3.67) in a 7-0 win over the Chicago Hitmen.
7/13:
Justin Watkins (NYP) went 3-4 with 5 RBI's hitting 3 HR's in a 9-6 win over Baltimore.
Steve Tikkanen (LA) continues his “bad” year with a rare win as he goes 9, whiffs 7 and walks 0 in a 5-0 victory over Las Vegas. Tikkanen is 5-12 with a 3.84 ERA. He has not had a .500 season in the past 4 years going 10-13, 12-13, 10-14, and 12-16 but has only had a 4+ ERA 1 time (4.13).
San Antonio acquired 23 year old P Steve Telschow (3.5*) 1B Berhane Rassul (22 1.5*) and 2B Jesse Cain (21 2.5*) for Lexington's Blake Hixson (27 3*)
Ft. Worth's Josh Roth recorded his 400th career save today. He's 77-87 400 SV 3.06 ERA. He is just the 4th pitcher in ABL history to record 400+ saves.
7/14:
Baltimore sent SP Savier Manifold (21 0.5*) to Atlanta for RP Jose Campos (32 2.5*)

RUSTLER NEWS:
7/9:
Alexis Candalaria was taken 81st overall in the 2022 draft. A very good potential middle of the order bat. He's young, just turning 20. That was the only reason he wasn't promoted to AA this winter after a .322-30-85 season at SLC last year. Today he hit 3 HR and drove in 5 and is hitting .301-21-81 in 86 G with a .375 OBP and 64 R. His defensive is woefully inadequate but he's got time.
Drafted in the 25th round OF Mario Quinonez went 13-21 4 2B 3B 2 HR 4 RBI to win POTW in rookie league this week. Quinonez was the 807th and final pick of the draft.

ABL HAPPENINGS:

7/16:
Jonathan Frazier (LA) went 5-5 hitting 3 2B and driving in 2 in a 6-5 win over division leading San Francisco.
7/17:
David Corral (FW) threw as 2-hit 12K CG in a 4-0 win over Charlotte. The win was his 4th (4-2 2.08) of another injury riddled season for the 25 year old 4th overall pick.
7/18:
3x All-Star CF Isaias Kikkert signed a 1 year 2.8 million dollar deal with San Antonio.
7/21:
Veteran 2B Jeremy Wilson (JAX) went 5-5 in a 9-8 win over Buffalo.

RUSTLER NEWS:
7/22:
Rafael Aguinaga was diagnosed with a season ending injury to his throwing shoulder. The 24 year old tore his labrum and will be out at least 9 months. He was having a Jackie Robinson award winning season hitting .310-8-33 before the collision at 2B. IF Omar Colon was recalled and will serve as a backup IF and defensive stalwart Ryokan Kawata will takeover the everyday SS duties to provide some stability at the cost of offense. There was some talk about bringing top prospect Izzy Duran up given his elite defensive ability but it was decided he'll hole up in AAA Warren for now, where he is hitting .322/.347/.531 over 35 games.

NEXT WEEK: 3 @ Memphis Blue Sox (60-48) OFF DAY 3 vs Chicago Iron Pigs (57-51)

ABL HAPPENINGS:
7/23:
Phil Rodeback (LA) whiffed 10 and walked 2 in a 12-0 pasting of Brooklyn for the 31 year olds 1st win of the year (1-4 6.66)
Tony Rodriguez (PIT) fanned a season high 16 San Francisco Bears as the Miners dropped the Bears 4-0 on his CG 3-hitter. He's 12-5 2.04.
7/24:
John Ganley (PHI) won his 7th (7-10 3.44) after fanning 15 and allowing 5 hits in a 5-2 win over Baltimore.
Ben Rice (FW) tossed a 2-hitter and struck out 15, walking 1 in a 6-0 win over Buffalo to move to 9-7 3.48.
7/25:
Former Rustler Kurt Hunt (SAN) threw a 4-hitter in a 1-0 win over Lexington to go 7-12 4.77.
Pittsburgh acquired SP Joe Stahl (30 3*) and 110K in cash from Atlanta for P Greg Guzman (23 2*) and P Freddie Sion (24 1.5*). Stahl is 2-13 4.89 after a 12-5 4.19 year in San Jose last season.
7/26:
Robby Reed (GB) struck out 15 and allowed just 3 hit as Green Bay downed Jacksonville 5-1. He's 5-15 3.82.
Danny Lopez (PHX) went 8, allowed just 2 hits and struck out 15 to 2 walks in a 5-0 win over LA. He's 10-8 3.37.
7/27:
In Tony Nagel's last 2 starts he's tossed 2 CG, allowed 6 hits, walked 2 and fanned 33 after a 17 K performance in a 3-0 win today over New York. He's only won 1 of those games as he continues a monster season. The Paragons ace is 15-4 2.84 with a league leading 269 K's in 164.2 IP.
7/28:
Karl Simone (DAL) went 5-5 in a 10-2 win over the Iron Pigs today.
Tony Rodriguez (PIT) followed up his 16 K masterpiece with a 5-hit CG SHO while striking out 14 in a 8-0 win over Las Vegas.
The expansion Washington Jets announced owner Ben Turner had passed away today. Turner will be succeeded by son Pat who, unlike his free spending father is known to be very tight with the purse strings but not a meddler in the day to day workings of the team.

RUSTLER NEWS:
7/25:
Couple of things from the FA market. We signed 17 year old, 6'7” 200lb RF Alex Vasquez for 1.9 million dollars. He immediately became our #3 prospect and #17 in the ABL.
38 year old 1B/2B Jeff Selley has been out of the game almost 2 years. A 2-time all-star and 2x Ted Williams award winner he agreed to a minor league deal and will report to AAA Warren where he will play every day. With the Aguinaga injury I wanted to shore up the middle IF depth and while he's a below average 2B our scouts say he is still an elite top of the order offensive player and a strong clubhouse guy. Over his 11 years, all spent with the Miners, he hit .298/.389/.482 with 279 2B 170 HR 561 K and 669 BB in 1439 games and 5137 PA. He led the league 4 years ago with a .441 OBP.
7/29:
It was supposed to be a temporary move when top prospect Izzy Duran was brought up to AAA Warren but he's done nothing but hit and play great defense and this week the 20 year old took home AAA POTW honors for his 14-24 HR 5 RBI effort. Duran is hitting .359-6-25 in 41 games.

THIS WEEK: 3 @ Memphis Blue Sox (60-48) OFF DAY 3 vs Chicago Iron Pigs (57-51)

THE WEEK IN REVIEW:
1st real bad week in awhile. Some trades but nothing major. Took extras to lose 2 and our pitching wasn't real consistent or good after Monday.

NEXT WEEK: 3 @ Charlotte Cyclones (60-54) 3 vs Lexington Rebels (69-45) 1 @ Buffalo Bison (48-65)

ABL HAPPENINGS:
7/29:
Josh Orcutt (SF) fanned 15 over his 7 innings of 2-hit work to outduel Phoenix's Cory Feucht in 1-0 Bears win and even his record at 7-7 3.83. Feucht lost for just the 4th time (14-4 2.70) tossing a CG (8-4-1-1-1-10)
7/30:
Rich Pace (PHI) went 3-4 hitting 3 HR's and driving in 6 in an 8-2 win over the Chicago Hitmen.
Denver traded P Ramiro Cirolli (26 3*) to Houston for OF Mike Kane (23 2*)
The NY Punishers traded P Adam Macfee (31 3*) and P Ryan Dean (21 2*) to Phoenix for P Josiah Lloyd (23 2.5*) P Armando Hernandez (22 2*) and P Chris Cybulski (23 2*). NY also sent 1.08 million in cash to Phoenix in the deal.
7/31:
Cory Bennett (CIP) threw a CG SHO allowing just 5 hits in a 8-0 win over Washington. Bennett is 9-10 3.62.
8/1:
Dustin Fennell (NE) went 9, fanned 14, walked 2 and allowed 5 hits in a CG 1-0 win over Memphis to beat Kevin Blevins (7-10 4.53) who went 7-4-1-1-3-7 in the loss. Fennell is 9-5 4.04.
8/3:
Quan Zhang (PRO) scattered 9 hits and punched out 13 in an 11-0 drubbing of Atlanta.

RUSTLER NEWS:
7/31:
AUSTIN DEALS BRENTLINGER FOR NILIN, AGAIN.
The Austin Rustlers acquired IF Devon Nilin (27 4*) and IF Jason Brown (25 3.5*) as well as a 2nd round draft pick in exchange for P prospect Andrew Brentlinger (27 3.5*) P Omari Stoner (26 3*) 1B Yoshinori Kamimura (26 2*) 2B Jared Ennis (26 2.5*) and their 2nd and 7th round draft picks next year.
A few of you might remember that Austin originally acquired Nilin in 2022 from the Brooklyn Blackhearts for P George Frost, then in March of 2023 traded him to Baltimore, along with Adam Webber and P Matt Shepherd for Brentlinger and IF JP Riggle.
Nilin went on to win the 2023 Jackie Robinson Award hitting .305/.356/.446 29 2B 6 3B 10 HR 31-53 SB
BACKROOM CHATTER
I felt very thin at the “extra” IF spot all across the organization. That utility guy that isn't just a bat and can play a few spots. Nilin is an elite defender at 2B and SS as well as a switch hitter. He handles RHP far better than LHP but he's good enough to plug in and play every day if need be. He's known as a real dirt dog in the Trot Nixon kind of way.
Brown is a RH bat who plays elite defense at 1B, 2B, and SS. He's also a 50 SB threat. Not as elite at the plate as Nilin but still can hold his own. He'll report to Warren.
Colon was sent down, Nilin was added to the roster.
Brentlinger is an elite P prospect but I am feeling good about my depth at SP and he's also 27, which I think is a bit “old” for a true prospect. He'll be a good one though and the rest of the deal was to lighten up the AAA roster a bit and move up in the 2nd round.
RUSTLERS, GENERALS CONFIRM DEAL
Austin traded IF Omar Colon (22 3*) and OF Victor Villalobos (27 2.5*) as well as their 3rd and 10th round picks next year to Ohio for P Sean Hedge (23 3.5*) and the Generals 3rd round draft pick next year.
BACKROOM CHATTER
Same deal really. Lighten the roster in AAA Warren to allow Duran more AB's, move an extra 4A OF with power, get back a power LH bullpen arm and move up in the 3rd round next year.
8/3:
3 items from down on the farm:
  • Ft Wayne OF Tommy Major (2nd round 2023 70th overall) went 3-4 slamming 3 HR's and driving in 5 in a 17-3 win over Joliet. Major is hitting .301-13-41through 36 games. Major would go 10-20 5 HR 11 RBI 7 R to take home POTW honors as well.
  • Ft Wayne OF Mario Quinonez (25th round 2021 807th pick) was just 1-5 in that 17-3 win but that 1B extended his hitting streak to a league high 25 games and he is hitting .321-5-18 through 35 games.

THE WEEK IN REVIEW:
A great week. Some younger players are putting the pressure on for at bats, namely Jeff Wagy and DJ Mullinax is heating up big time. Jereon de Vos is rounding into form at just the right time. Matt Eilers might be the bests closer I've ever had in OOTP, even better than my 1st, Ernesto Cruz of the Iron Pigs.

Another good week. Frank Robledo looks to be the guy to replace Adrian but I need his defense to improve. Romero is in the running, again, for a Hank Aaron award. Coryell will remain in the rotation for the remainder of the month and some of the call-ups will work in a start or two as well.
For now C Adam Geggus, P Sean Hedge, P Ben Woods are the only call ups as Warren is once again in the playoffs.

NEXT WEEK: 1 vs Atlanta Razorbacks (59-81) 3 @ Ohio Generals (66-74) 3 vs Dallas Texans (78-62)
