July 2024 - In Review
July 2024 Award Winners
Delaware Conference Monthly Awards Ogawa Grabs DEConf Best Batter Award for July: Seasoned by several years of professional experience, 39-year-old Totoya Ogawa put together a solid offensive month for Lewes and was crowned July's top batter in the Delaware Conference. He batted .289 with 10 home runs, 25 RBIs and 20 runs scored. Looking at his present stats, Ogawa has compiled a .249 batting average in 105 games with a .402 on-base percentage, while hitting 25 home runs and driving in 61 runs. Generals Hurler Named DEConf's #1 Starter: Oliver Nelson took a much-deserved turn in the spotlight earlier today as he accepted the Delaware Conference Pitcher of the Month award for July. The 24-year-old Generals starter is a relative newcomer to the league, but nonetheless racked up an impressive 4-0 won-lost record in 5 starts. This month he fanned 31 batters in 36 innings and compiled a 1.00 ERA. Up to now Nelson has compiled an ERA of 3.82 with a 8-10 mark over 22 starts. He has 122 strikeouts in 134.1 innings and has held opponents to a .224 batting average. Martínez Gets DEConf Rookie of Month Honors: Today Wilmington's Alonso Martínez was named the Delaware Conference Rookie of the Month for July. He punished DDIV hurlers hard the entire month, collecting 22 hits in 97 at-bats. He outdistanced his competition with a .227 batting average, 7 home runs, 27 RBIs and 15 runs scored. This year Martínez is batting .294 with 29 home runs and 85 RBIs. In 88 games he has scored 63 times. MarVa Conference Monthly Awards Castaneda Claims MVConf Batter of the Month Award: António Castaneda of the Blue Crabs hit .347 in July with 9 home runs, 26 RBIs and 20 runs scored to capture a majority of votes for the MarVa Conference Batter of the Month trophy. The 24-year-old is in the last year of his contract and will undoubtedly use these numbers to try and bring in a huge pay raise. In his season totals, Castaneda has 26 home runs, .313 BA, .397 OBP, 81 RBIs and 73 runs scored. He has played in 95 games. Blue Crabs Hurler Named July's #1 Starter: Despite the number of years he's been in the league, Orlando Ruíz still gets excited when he puts together a quality stretch like he had in July. The 28-year-old starter for Chesapeake was named MarVa Conference Pitcher of the Month earlier today. He collected 5 wins and 1 loss with 36 strikeouts in his 6 starts, putting up a fine 1.02 ERA in 44.1 innings of work. This year Ruíz has made 22 starts, thrown 159.2 innings, fanned 120 batters and walked 48. His won-lost record is 15-2 with a 2.14 ERA. MarVa Conference Names Rookie of Month: Youngster Vance Burns emerged as the latest MarVa Conference Rookie of the Month today. The young man from Ellicott City deserved the honor, batting .259 with 6 home runs and 15 runs batted in. Is the month of July a harbinger of things to come or just a fluke? We'll find out someday, but for now, we'll just let Burns enjoy the limelight. Thus far this year Burns is batting .283 with 14 home runs, 42 RBIs and 65 runs scored. The Braves have put togehter a team of veterans that have been giving great support to one of the most rounded pitching staff in the game. I am really surprised that this team is winning their division by 11+ games. Their offense is lead by 3 players who are over 37 years old. Northern Division: Current Leader: Milford Clippers (63-45 .583 / + 3) Projected Winner: Wilmington Iron Pigs (89-73 .549 / +2) The Milford Clippers are trying to hold off the Iron Pigs, as the read hot Pigs have started closing in. The Clippers are a balanced team, without a .300 hitter, and oure 5th in the conference in runs scored. Their pitching is lead by Seth Bennett and Mariano Salazar who are leading the 3rd best staff in the Conference. Can they hold off the leagues top scoring offense? Eastern Division: Current Leader: Chesapeake Blue Crabs (62-45 .579 / +4) Projected Winner: Chesapeake Blue Crabs (92-70 .568 / +7) The Blue Crabs have a 4 game lead on the Barons, but it does feel like its a lot bigger than just 4 games. The Blue Crabs have the conference top scoring offense and have allowed the 2nd least amount of runs. Lead by a powerful offense, and consistent pitching, the Crabs try to battle injuries and take home their 3 division title, 2nd in a row. Western Division: Current Leader: Norfolk Cavaliers (76.32 .704 / +21.5) Projected Winner: Norfolk Cavaliers (95-67 .586 / +9.0) The Cavaliers had their worse month of their season winning .64 % of their games, each month they continue to drop. Are they ahead by too many games and being lackadaisical? Is the offense just not that good? They have the top pitching staff in the league, and the 2nd most runs scored, but they keep losing more games. They pretty much have the division wrapped up, but will they be able to contend in the post season?

GM Notes: Our #1 pick Black Quirke is struggling getting used to minor league pitching. In 158 AB's, he is hitting .177-5-14, with 61 K's. I feel like I have to do something with this offense, but I am not exactly sure. We continue to fall in batting average, and power numbers. We are missing something. Maybe I need to rearragne everyone in hopes that will spark a change, or do I bring up up Sergio Rodriguez (.374-6-73, AAA) from AAA to spark a fire... this is getting tough. Did I miss my chance at the dead-line to pull off that deal? I really thought we were better... As our offense continues to faulter, our pitching staff keeps getting better. Our 1-4 starters all have 12+ wins and an ERA of under 3.10. If I could ship Dalton Whitaker away it would free up a slot to possible go with a 6 man rotation. Right now I just don't trust him out of then and enjoy having an extra arm there. These guys are really putting it all together right now and it gives me confidence. The offense however is starting to scare me. The offense was flat this week. There really isn't much positive to say, excpet for Sergio Galvez and his week. Galvez is having a solid season hitting .281 out of the leadoff slot and playing out of position. He is a natural RF, who has been trained at 1B, who is forced to play CF. He is 9 HR's and 2 SB's away from a 30/30 season. He will be the third player in DBL history to do so... I am also going to give some props to Robinson Lopez. He is now the starting 2B and he had a solid week, hitting 2 HR's and raising his average 5 points. He will continue to get more AB's while ARod isn't hitting (ARod is now hitting .203). Francisco Gallegos is just in an awful slump and is now hitting .259-10-52. I am going to get Wally Lambert more AB's as the 1B. Lambert is hitting .287-13-45 as a parttimer. He deserves more AB's, specially if Gallegos isn't going to produce. Gallegos will stay in the lineup against lefties, since he is a switch hitter, but Lambert will end up in the lineup against righties. I have until Sept 1 to get the right guys on the roster. I may have to do some trickery to get another pitcher on the roster and to keep Whitaker off. DFA Whitaker on August 30th, then add him back when his time is up. If I could get a better arm on the roster that will help me out... and I need to figure out what to do with this lineup. I am going to bounce some guys around in the order and hopefully that mix-up will releive the pressure from some of the players, and get some of these guys going. This offensive downturn is starting to get to me and my confidence of a long playoff run. We could win 110 games this season and lose in the first round of the playoffs, and I will consider this season a loss... and will really need to sit back and reevaluate my "plan" for this club and maybe make some big changes... Lewis was moved from 3rd to 2nd, Brock from 5th to 3rd, Diaz up to 5th, Gomez from 8th to 6th and Gallegos down ot 8th. Gallegos is also on a 2 day platoon with Lambert, so Wally should get some more AB's this week. Hopefully something gets sparked here, I want to be able to rely on the offense at least a little! GM Notes: Back-to-back 2-4 weeks is tough to handle. This week was really crazy, the first few games we couldn't hit, the back-end it was a combination of not being able to get outs and not hitting the ball. Its not quite time to panic, but its getting close. I need to inject some life into this offense, but I am not sure how. I have checked the waiver wires, the free-agents, and there is nothing out there. I will need to think if I want to make a "big" change or just a minor one. Maybe one bat can change the out-look. Lopez will get one more start, and if it doesn't go well Griffith will be back in the rotation for the rest of the season. Griffith took a little hit on his movement, which worries me he is prone to throwing flat, and every little bit helps. My biggest issue/fear with making a move now is its close to the locking down the playoff roster, so if I make a move I either have to a) be sure its what I want for the playoffs or b) reverse that move right before Sept 1. I have some ideas of what I should do and I think pulling Gallegos (.260-10-52) is a start. Watching the team batting average drop has been really painful, partly because I know all these guys are capable of so much more. Maybe they all will wake up for the playoffs and we will just strom our way through. I need Cornell Pearson to get back on track. After a red-hot start he has fallen off a bit. In 2 August starts he has posted a 7.00 ERA. Remember he started the season 8-1 and is 4-4 since, and that includes a 3-1 July. I need him to get back to his April/May form. Ratings wise he is one of the top 10 pitches in the game, which is why I expect so much of him. Maybe all this panicking is the problem... maybe I need to sit and see how the next few weeks go. I know this team has holes, but every team out there has hole, at least as far as I can see they do. As long as our pitching is healthy and we can score some runs we should be good. Just need to relax and have some faith in these guys and start scoring more runs... I am honestly speechless (why this write up is so wonky) on how bad the last 2 weeks have gone after playing so well prior. I am not sure if its me, the team or just the guys I have together. This has been a rough time for the Cavaliers and we need to battle through this slump... Big week coming up. Norfolk Loses Brown for 3 Months
The injury that has kept Paul Brown out of action since 08/12/2024 will keep him out a while longer. Norfolk Cavaliers officials made the announcement this afternoon. They said that Brown is expected to miss at least 3 months with a torn triceps.
To date this season, Brown has registered 23 starts, 17-2 won-lost mark, 2.52 ERA, 164 IP, 202 strikeouts and 20 walks. Opposing teams have hit .209 against him. ----- In a time of struggle the one thing that keep us going was our top 3 starters, Contreras, Gonzalez and Brown... Losing Brown for 3 months is HUGE. This means he is done for the playoffs. Last season Brown was 2-0 in 3 starts during the playoffs, and would of been relied upon again this season. I am honestly not sure there is anyone more valuable to this team than Brown. Saying this is a huge blow doesn't do it justice. Vaughan Griffith will be placed back into the rotation taking Browns slot and Alberto Sanchez will be brought up to take over in the pen. Carlos Coranado, a lefty starter, may end up with the big club before September hits.It might be nice to have a lefty in the rotation. He has been hot and cold in his return from injury, but he seems to be getting better.

The first was to send Leonard Lawson down to AAA. He will get more swing down there and he has a cold spell. Plsu I will have him spend some time in CF... To take his spot we called up Sergio Rodriguez, a 20-year who is a solid contact hitter with great speed (and a right-handed bat). Sergio Rodriguez will play CF, Sergio Galvez will shift to 1B and Francisco Gallegos is now on the bench. Alberto Sanchez was sent down to AAA at the end of the week and Carlos Coronado was called up and will take over the #5 slot in the starting rotation, sending Armando Lopez back down to AAA. GM Notes: This was a rough week for our startesr as they saw their ERA jump from 3.08 to 3.26, as well as losing their top guy. Now we will be tryign to fill that void the rest of the season. Can Cornell Pearson, Vaughan Griffith, Armando Lopez and Carlos Coranado pick up the slack?? I sure hope so. The one positive from our 3rd losing week in a row, is that we split with the Lewes Braves who are the front-runner to win the Delaware Conference... and I am not going to discuss losing 2 of 3 to the Washington Senators, because that just shouldn't happen. You don't realize how losing one player can change the whole complexion of a team, but losing Brown really did this for the Cavaliers. With Brown and Contreras 1 and 2, I felt like we had a chance to beat anyone, but now with just Contreras there is question marks. Hopefully Miguel Angel Gonzalez will be up for the test in the playoffs again. This is assuming we can hold on to our 20 game lead with 42 to go. I was trying to inject some fire into this offense by bring up the 20-yr old kid Serigo Rodriguez and I am not sure if it really worked or not, but Rodrigeuz hit .333 on the on the week with 2 doubles and 3 RBI's. He even stole 2 bases. I will keep him up and see how it goes the rest of August. On August 3th I will have to look at this team and see if there are any moves I want to make for the playoff run. Once we hit September, I will be bringing up a couple of relief pitchers and going to a 6-man rotation. I think having these guys throw a little less will help us down the stretch. With Griffith and Coronado in the rotation right now, Armando Lopez will most likely the one to get the call as the #6. King had a big week, finally and has been hitting well in August. He has raised his average over 10 points, when I noticed he was hitting only .251 and is now putting up some respectable numbers (.271-18-71). Hopefully he can continue this and this just isn't a couple week special... and Gallegos didn't like being benched as he went deep 2 times this week. Maybe we have our spark? We are 7-12 in our last 19 games yet still are on top of the power rankings, and have no idea why. I would like to earn that ranking by winning games and holding off the opponents, not by everyone else's struggles. This season the DBL saw 4 players reach the 2000 hit mark, and they have been racing to see who will end up on the top of that list, here is a look how they currently stand: 1) Kent Davis - 2087 2) Jeff Lewis - 2043 3) Roberto Perez - 2033 4) Francisco Reyes - 2030 All four of these guys are in their mid-30's and should have a few more hits left in them...

So we went 3-3, we are turning things around or so it seems. I need to get a little more from Pearson and Griffith. In a perfect world, Pearson would step-it-up back and pick up the slack for the loss of Paul Brown. My fear is I am going to end up putting too much pressure on Contreras. Looking at my division I am going to have to step it up. The Senators, Express, Ports and Cardinals are all getting better, and if how we are playing is who we are, then next season we will be in a divisional battle. I am going to have to step it up just as much as the team if we want to continue our Western Division dominance. Hopefully I can get Bill Parker (owner) and the fans of the Cavlaliers another title before too long. I am missing the title years. Sergio Rodriguez seems to be enjoying his time up with the big club. So far in two weeks he has put up really solid numbers, batting in the #1 (vs LHP) and #2 (vs RHP) slots in the lineup. He doesn't seem very intimidated and is raking. He is hitting .348-1-8. Its a little shot in the arm, but it doesn't seem to be boosting the other guys up, like I had hoped. Sergio Galvez now has 34 steals and 24 HR's, it looks like he may fall just short of that 30/30 club this season. I have a feeling, however, if he doens't get it this season he will get it at least 1 time during his career. He is a solid player and just needs to put it all together. He slumped a bit in the middle of the year, but seems to have bounced back. The games we score, we don't seem to pitch. the games we pitch, we don't seem to score. It looks like we have all the pieces we just can't seem to put them all together. I would like to see us win a game 16-1 or something like that. See what we are capable of when we are firing on the same cylinders. Jeff Lewis has put together a pretty solid year (.326-6-52) despite missing over 50 games with injuries. He is set to play in just about 100 games, and it looks like he would probably be in the middle of the MVP talks again if he was healthy all year long. I am glad he is back and will need him to step it up if I want to contend (I am still sore over his performance in last years playoffs, and because of that I don't want him to pick up his player option for '25). Ramon Granados just didn't snap out of this season long funk and might of played himself out of Norfolk (.219-6-31). With Lucarelli returning next season, and Rodriguez showing he deserves time with the Cav's there may no place for Granados in the OF or at 2B. And I am not going to pay him $8M to sit on the bench... that being said Augusto Rodriguez (.192-2-21) is quickly playing himself into the back-up 2B/SS role. I still can't beleive he is signed for 3 more years. He really took some developmental hits over the years and has lost almost all his ability to hit. His rookie season and sophomore season he pushed .300 and now this season he will be lucky to hit .200! I had faith threw him a long term deal and it back-fired. I am trying to stay positive during this down slide, and I guess part of me should be grateful that the trading deadline has passed. why? Oh thats easy, I am an impulsive trader and who knows what I would of done. I think we are a good all-around team. August 2024 - In Review
August 2024 Award Winners
Delaware Conference Monthly Awards Javier Domínguez Winner in August: The Batter of the Month honoree for August in the Delaware Conference is Milford Clippers center fielder Javier Domínguez. He showed no mercy as he finished the month with a .348 batting average, 7 home runs, 25 RBIs, and 27 runs scored. For the season Domínguez is batting .284 with 156 hits and 16 home runs. He has scored 91 times and batted in 98. Salazar Named Top DEConf Hurler: Despite the number of years he's been in the league, Mariano Salazar still gets excited when he puts together a quality stretch like he had in August. The 26-year-old starter for Milford was named Delaware Conference Pitcher of the Month earlier today. He collected 4 wins and no losses with 37 strikeouts in his 6 starts, putting up a fine 2.14 ERA in 42 innings of work. Over the season Salazar has thrown 199.2 innings and dished out 193 strikeouts with a 14-4 mark and a 2.66 ERA. High on the Hit Parade, Martínez Voted #1 Rookie: In August Wilmington first baseman Alonso Martínez was named Rookie of the Month in the Delaware Conference. Last month Martínez posted a .248 average with 28 hits, 9 home runs and 20 RBIs. To date Martínez has chalked up a .283 average with 38 home runs, driven in 105 runs and scored 86 times. MarVa Conference Monthly Awards MVConfs's Best Batter Announced: August was an outstanding month for Virginia Beach catcher Michael Shoemaker and it was capped off today with the announcement that he was named the winner of the MarVa Conference Batter of the Month award. Shoemaker compiled a .354 batting average and .387 on-base percentage for the month. In 24 games he piled up 35 hits, 10 home runs, 31 RBIs and 16 runs scored. This year Shoemaker is hitting .303 with 141 hits, 28 home runs, 96 RBIs and has scored 60 runs. MVConf Top Pitcher in August: Kennerley: "The kid had it all working last month," a veteran teammate told reporters. "He keeps up those kind of numbers, we might have to start inviting him out with us after the games." Rhys Kennerley put together a very solid month to take home the MarVa Conference's top pitching honor in August. The 24-year-old reliever threw like a veteran. In 13 relief appearances he raked in 5 saves and 11 strikeouts in 13 innings as he put together his 5-0 record and 1.38 ERA. Kennerley has 6 saves this year. In 41 relief appearances he has tossed 42.2 innings, fanned 29, and given up 11 walks with a 7-1 record. The Virginia Beach reliever has recorded a 2.32 ERA and allowed the opposition to hit .234 when he is on the mound. MarVa Conference Names Rookie of Month: Kevin Clark earned August's Rookie of the Month honors in the MarVa Conference for last month's performance. The boyish Annapolis right fielder might be wet behind the ears, but he's proving that he has what it takes to play at this level. Clark hit .367 with 4 home runs, 12 RBIs and 14 runs scored this past month on his way to winning the award. A look at his current stats shows Clark with a .327 average, 6 home runs, 24 RBIs and 25 runs scored. He has played in 47 games. The Generals just couldn't get anything going this season. The Braves have a very well rounded team lead by 5 wonderful starters, a solid bullpen and a veteran lineup that knows how to get the job done. As long as they can stay healthy this team will compete for the title, yet agian. Northern Division: Current Leader: Milford Clippers (80-56 .588 / +2.5) Projected Winner: Wilmington Iron Pigs (89-73 .549 / +2) The Clippers won 17 games in August and continue to hold off the Iron Pigs. This division is the only division that has a tight race and it looks like it will continue that way till the end. A middle of the road team, the Clippers are well balanced with speed, power, defense, and pitching. They will be a handful for any team. Don't count out the Iron Pigs and their offense, lead by MVP canidates Matt Fisher (.295-34-117) and Alonso Martinez (.283-38-105) this team nows how to score runs. If the Pigs can get a starter or two hot this month watch out, with their offense anything is possible. I like the Pigs to pull it out in the end. Eastern Division: Current Leader: Chesapeake Blue Crabs (79-56 .585 / +8) Projected Winner: Chesapeake Blue Crabs (92-70 .568 / +7) A 17 win month put the Blue Crabs 8 games ahead of the surprising Surf Dawgs and the Barons. Led by Orlando Ruiz and his 17 wins and a powerful offense, 5-players with over 20 HR's, the Blue Crabs have lead the Eastern Div the whole way through. This team is the team to beat in the MarVa Conference. Western Division: Current Leader: Norfolk Cavaliers (90-46 .662 / +19.5) Projected Winner: Norfolk Cavaliers (95-67 .586 / +9.0) The Cavaliers all but have the division locked up despite an August collapse. The Cav's started out the season red hot and have slowly came back down to reality (Winning Pct by month: .778, .724, .667, .640, .500), but unfortunately for the Senators and the Ports the Cav's were hot enough at the beginning of the season to grab an early lead. They will rely on a 36-yr-old starter (Contreras) and a 23-yr-old starter (Gonzalez) to carry them the rest of the way, as their offense battles inconsistency.

Bryan O'Neil
Those who have been reading since 2017 have heard that name a few times. Bryan O'Neil was at one time my 6th out-fielder, but over the years he has fallen out of favor, and hasn't been on the Cav's roster since 2019. And in 2019 he put together a quite impressive 16 games... but ever since he has bounced around the Cavaliers minor league system. He is one of those guys that plays because he loves the game. He never complains and goes wherever we need him. This season he has been A, AA, and AAA. I keep signing him to minor leagues deals, not sure why, but I just have. I think it was that 2019 season, that made me want to keep him in the organization...
He has been in the DBL since 2013, and in that year we acquired him from the Washington Senators along with CL Carlos Rodriguez in exchange for CL Jack Clow and MR Joe Kelly. The deal headliners were Rodriguez and Clow, and he was just a throw in, one we are happy to have in our organization... The reason we are talking about O'Neil is, because he was closing in on 1000 professional hits. I thought it was a neat milestone for this kid, unfortunately he tore his labrum last week and will miss the remainder of the season. It is yet to be determined if he his decided to continue his career... Here is a look at his crazy journey...

Carlos Franco is going to return next week. He will get some AB's down in AAA and then will be called up. He may be my SS of the playoffs, if it works out. Other/Roster News: The week started with me designating Dalton Whitaker for assignment. With September coming up I wanted to make sure I had a better pitcher on my roster for the playoffs. Whitaker is out and Alberto Sanchez is called up once again. I have a feeling he will be better this time around. GM Notes: Sergio Rodriguez has been playing somewhat out-of-position with the Cavaliers. A better corner out-fielder we have him playing CF, which is weakness defensively for this team. In 139 innings in CF for the Cavaliers Rodriguez has committed 2 errors and has .935 FPct... His average dropped this week, despite getting a hit in every game, but one thing we think he needs to work on is his patience. In 72 PA's, Rodriguez has yet to draw a walk. Ramon Granaods hit .159 for the month of August, and has just about played himself out of the starting job. Currently, he is splitting time with Bernardo Velez who hit .244 in August. Not much better, but Bernardo is also a better fielder. He will continue to split time with Ramon until one of them gets on a streak... Granados isn't happy with his season at all, and in my mind its his final season with the Cavaliers. Augusto Rodriguez just hasn't hit the ball this season. A career .264 hitter, ARod has dipped under .200. Currently he is .191-2-25, with 49 hits and 20 walks. He has only struck out 17 times. Lucky for me his sad hitting hasn't rubbed off on his fielding, he has 3 errors posting a .990 FPct in 610 innings... signed for 2 more years with a 300 AB vesting option for 2027. It looks like Coronado, Contreras and Gonzalez are my starters that are stepping it up. I am still shocked by Cornell Pearson's performance of late. Coronado missed 13 months with an injury after 2 solid starts to start 2023, then during his rehab he got hurt again and missed another 3 1/2 months. He seems to have found his grove with the Cav's however. In 2 starts he has allowed 17 hits in 17 innings, and only 5 ER. I like tos ee that fro him, because as it is now he is my left in the rotation. He isn't a "Matt Hollis", but he is good and will be a solid #4 or 5. I am glad he is back and I just hope he can stay healthy. We will bring up some September reinforcements and try to stay healthy for the playoffs. I hope we stay hot and can take this momentum and finish strong. We are going to have our hands full come playoff time so we need some things rolling. I do have faith we will perform ok in the playoffs, but I am a little nervous based on how we played over the the prior 3 weeks. We have a 3 game set against the Blue Crabs at the end of the season, it should be a playoff preview, but this week we have need to conecntrate on the Express and and Generals. This week will be tougher than last week and could prove if we have the right stuff. There are 24 games left and Sergio Galvez needs 6 HR's to be the 3rd player with a 30/30. Its not looking good. This included removing Dalton Whitaker from waivers and adding him back to the 40-man roster. And joining him are AAA players: OF John Stewart (.293-8-62), 3B Felipe Mora (.300-38-113), IF Yoelbi Mosca (.261-3-26), C Peter Alexaner (.343-2-12), MR Tariel Ratishvili (5-4 3.26, 15 SV), and MR Jimmy Jones (8-2 4.54, 3 SV). Minor league deals: We gave minor league extensions to Gautier De Los Angeles, Markus Lee and Bryan O'Neil. I am keeping Lee and O'Neil around only becuase they have been with the organization and long time and filled in when I needed them. De Los Angeles however he is around because I still have faith he may amount to something. I actually at one point thought he was going to be my 2B/3B of the future, but his development was stumped. Fingers are still crossed. GM Notes: The team may not have turned everything around when I brought up Sergio Rodriguez, but since his call up on August 12, Sergio Galvez has been on fire. Galvez went into the game on the 12th hitting .280 and over the past month he has raised his average up to .293. Coiencidence or not, its pretty impressive... and speaking of Rodriguez he is now hitting .303 in 89 AB's with only 10 K's and has yet to walk. He walked 15 times in 505 PA's in AAA this season... sometimes I forget that this is his first professional season. Augusto Rodriguez was red-hot this week, raising his average from .188 to .205. He may actually end the season over .200... With 17 more games to go, we do not have a player with 100+ RBI's. Our top 3 RBI guys are Henry Hamer (87), King Brock (79) and Sergio Galvez (73). For a team that is 2nd in Runs Scored I am surprised we don't have a guy on pace for 100. The way Hamer started the season, I thought he was a lock and actually a Silver Slugger canidate, will he get 13 RBI's in the last 17 games? Is going to be tough... I am surprised by how far away we are. Brock slumped during the middle of the year, Alejandro Diaz slumped to start the year... and Sergio Galvez has been batting primarily lead-off all season. I have been thinking to msyelf how disappointed I have been with the season of Alejandro Diaz, but in reality he is putting up the same numbers, if not a little better, than he did last season. Last year his first full season with the Cav's Diaz hit .250-29-81 with a 1.0 WAR, comparing those numbers to his currnet numbers .257-21-72 / 1.5 WAR, and a huge defensive boost (2023: -3.5 ZR, .999 EFF , 25.3 CS%; 2024: +4.7 ZR, 1.190 ZR, 39.7 CS%) I should be happy. He isn't ever going to hit .300, so I have to understand that my expecations have been way out of whack for the 24-yr old. Betwen him and Mark Bolton we have a solid catching slot. The Cav's have now reached the playoffs 9 straight seasons, and for the 10th time in their 12 year history. They will try, yet again, to win that elusive 6th title. The last time we won the title was in 2019, ending a run of 4 years in a row. I am hungry for that 6th title, but I am not sure if this is the team to take that title home. We have a lot of little holes, and missing 2 of our better players (Brown, Lucarelli) Around the League: Standings Leaders DE Southern: Lewes Braves: 90-53 (+17.0, M# 2) DE Northern: Milford Clippers: 86-58 (+3.5, M# 15) MV Eastern: Chesapeake Blue Crabs: 84-59 (+8.0, M# 11) MV Western: Norfolk Cavaliers: 97-47 (+24.5, Clinched) Players of the Week: Delaware: Bartolo Ramirez, Milton Brewers, 13-30, 2 HR's, 14 RBI's MarVa: Armando Vazquez, Ellicott City Express, 14-29, 2 HR's, 5 RBI's Power Rankings: 1) Norfolk Cavaliers (128) 2) Lewes Braves (116) 3) Milford Clippers (113) 4) Chesapeake Blue Crabs (111) 5) Wilmington Iron Pigs (106) News:
The only expansion in the DBL occurred in 2017 when 4 new teams joined the league: Seaford Blue Jays, Christiana Blue Hens, Virginia Beach Surf Dawgs and the Salisbury Ports. Through last season, not one of the expansion teams have had a winning record with the Christiana Blue Hens (2022) and the Salisbury Ports ('23) coming the closest with 79. This year however 3 of those teams looking to change that, with 17 games left to the play the Seaford Blue Jays have 74 wins, the VB Surf Dawgs have 77 and the Ports have 71. The Surf Dawgs and the Blue Jays also have a chance at finishing in 2nd place the best finish for one of these expansion clubs. History will be made this season...

Hamer is our top offensive player this season hitting .307-28-88. Hamer carried our offense in the 2023 playoffs hitting .318-6-10, one of our only offensive players to step it up... Wally Lambert will now be listed as our starting RF, shifting Jeff Lewis to LF. Another day another injury. This time we lost John Stewart, not a big deal, however with Lawson and Hamer out Stewart was our 4th outfielder, while Galvez was playing 1B. Gallegos will now take over 1B, Galvez will head to the OF and Lambert will return to playing backup at all OF slots. We have a top prospect in AAA, but I don't think he is ready yet. Close, next year? But not right now. Leonard Lawson better come off the DL ready to swing the bat. Most likely he will end up on the playoff roster. Other/Roster News: I moved Armando Lopez into the starting rotation so we will be going with a 6 man rotation the final 18 games. I will try to have MA and Miguel rested and ready to go for the playoffs they will be my #1 and #2. Carlos Franco came off the DL and has been lighting it up, hitting .448-2-7 in AAA. He will be brought up after a 6 game rehab to help fill in with the injury to Hamer. I am unsure if he will stay around, but he is our best rated defender at SS and 3B. Just have questions about his hitting ability. GM Notes: The Sergio Rodriguez spark might be fluttering away. Rodriguez hit .188-0-1 (3-16) last week and has seen his average drop down to .288... And as Rodriguez has chilled so has Galvez. Galvez had an 2-22 week, posting .091-0-0 line. I hope to see much better performances form our 1 / 2 hitters the rest of the way. I brought up Carlos Franco in hopes that he would play good D and hopefully swing a solid stick. He came and 2 days later made his Cavaliers debut. He end the day 0-3 with a K, and the sure handed infielder, who I have been touting as the best 3B/SS defender in the organization, made an error, which cost us 2 unearned runs and the game.. oh and this was his big league debut/ These injuries are starting to get to me. Now we will be without Lucarelli, Brown and Hamer, at least through the first round of the playoffs. Taht is pretty huge for us. Hamer was our most consistent offensive bat, Brown is our best pitcher and Lucarelli is a .300+ hitter that can score runs and play defense. Without those guys our lineup and philosophy changes. The worse part of losing Hamer and Brown is they were my top 2 playoff performers from last year... if you can't tell, yes I am starting to get nervous. I really want this title, but it looks like I will need to retool and rethinking my 2025 team. The final 13 games are going to be very nerve wrecking for me. I just can't afford anyone else to get injured and I can't not play my starters. They will be getting some breaks and hopefully our manager, Mr Ray, will take the injuries into consideration and slow the game down. Maybe sure we preserve what we have. With a 7 game week next week, a day off then a six game week the following, including 3 in Chesapeake, we will be pushed to the limits. I am continuing with a 6 man rotation this week and next week I will play around with the lineup to get more of the youngsters in the game. I havne't been overly impressed with the guys I have brought up, and our big-league ready talent is just a miss. I am not sure what this team will do next year or the following. At least we do have some players to work with, we have a lot of OF'ers. This off-season will be an interesting one to say the least (especially if we don't win it all). This is an interesting week for us. If we don't bounce back to #1 in the power rankings it will be the first time since 2016 we didn't finish the season #1... wow, that is crazy... There is no update in the rankings in the final week, so this is the important week. ARod has a fractured thumb and is expected to miss 6 weeks. He finished the season hitting .207-3-2-30, his worse offensive season of his career. Now we are out both our shortstops and Carlos Franco will be taking over. I don't care if he hits or not, he can play D. Other/Roster News: n/a GM Notes: With 6 games left, we hold a 2 game lead for best record in the game. We already know we won't finish #1 in the power rankings, but will we not lead the league in wins for the first time since 2016 as well?? Going to be interesting as we have 3 games with the top team in the Eastern Division this week. Leonard Lawson hasn't played in 5 weeks, but it looks like there will be a good chance he lands on the playoff roster, despite struggling over the 2nd half of the season. Lawson will still give us a solid bat, something we may need, as well as a great defensive LF'er. My "new" short-stop is now hitting .063, and has made 2 errors and holds a FPct of .882, a ZR of -0.5 and a EFF of .944... UGH! He at least was supposed to giv eme some Glove Wizard caliber defense. I can't have this on the playoff roster... this short performance is going to make think twice about my playoff plans. We have six games left in the season and 3 of them against the team we are playing in the first round of the playoffs. I have a lot of thinking to do going into the playoffs and this final week I will hopefully be able to answer them. Right now I only have 2 gauranteed starters Contreras and Gonzalez, from there I need to fill in slots 3 and 4. Coronado for a lefty? Pearson who has struggled since the June. Griffith, how might be more valuable out of the pen? Not sure. Maybe I just go by my gut feeling on game day. Our short-season single-A team, in Jacksonville, finished 4th in their divions of 10, at 42-34 9 games out of first. Our single-A team, in San Jose, finisehd 1st in their division of 4, winning by 9 games. They won the wild-card series 2 games to 0, but lost in the conference champsion 3 games to 4. Our AA team, in New Orleans, won thier division, but lost in the first round of the playoffs, getting swept 3 games to 0. Our AAA team won their divsision as well, and lost in the frist round of the playffs 2 games to 3. All in all you have to say we had a pretty successful minor league season. I would of liked to go have gone deeper in the playoffs with any of our 3 playoff teams, but winning the division in 3 of the 4 leagues, not to shabby. Our #1 pick form 2023, Jimmy Lewis, put together a solid 2nd year in the minors hitting .270-3-36 an improvement of his performance last season. We have a lot of hope in this 18 yr old. Our #1 pick this season, Blake Quirke, was sent to A-ball, but after struggling, we sent down to short-season A. After a slow start hitting .180-7-23 in 200 AB's, Quirke spent the rest of the season in in short season where he looked more comfortable hitting .231-3-13 in 78 AB's. I need to make sure MA Gonzalez and Miguel Contreras don't get worn out this week. For me to have success in the playoffs they have to be my 1-2 punch. Gonzalez had a great rookie season, winning 18 games. I am a little concerned with his 219 IP. Hopefully he doesn't slow down into the playoffs. I think as he develops some more his K rate should go up. He struck out 153 this season, but I wouldn't be surprised if he hit 200 next year. Okay lets finish this season up and get the playoffs on the way. No new injuries to report, it looks like we will be as healthy as we can be going into the playoffs. I will miss Brown and Hamer, especially considering the numbers they put up in the playoffs last season. Other/Roster News: n/a GM Notes: Carlos Franco played himself out of a starting slot in the playoffs hitting .172-0-0 and making 3 errors, and most likely right off the playoff roster... I just hope our make-shift infield will be able to hold it all together... If he didn't make any errors he would be in the lineup for sure, but the 3 errors in like 15 games. Thats really scaring me off. Carlos Coronado, however, may have just pitched himself into the playoff rotation. Most likely he will be on the roster, take that lefty in the pen, but two decent starts this week and his stock just went up a little. He held the big bats of Chesapeake at bay and that makes me happy to see. If their are mostly righty's, however, which I think they are, that may hurt his chances of starting. Leonard Lawson was on the roster for the final 3 games, but didn't get any AB's... partly my fault... so no I have to figure out if he will be able to be my back-up outfielder. I don't think he will get any starts, but maybe it will be worth having a solid AB around. I guess it boils down to the question is do I got with 4 or 5 OF'ers. Francisco Gallegos was benched in July after an awful month (.192-3-12). Maybe I should of benched him earlier, because the final two months of the season he was on-fire, working his way back into the lineup. In August he hit .314-4-10 and September .308-3-10... one thing for sure, is he knows how to get runs home, even with hitting under .200. He will be my starting 1B during the playoffs, he isn't a great fielder, but a very solid one. In 123 games this season he had a FPct of .996 and a ZR of +3.5. I'll take it. King Brock has been a full-tim eplayer since 2018, and this season was by far his worst of them all. He hit a career low average .263 (18 points lower than his previous low), runs batted in 90 (2 lower than his previous) and HR's with 21 (8 lower). He has had 3 streaks of 16 or more games without a HR, something I don't remember him ever doing before. I look forward to him bouncing back next season. Jeff Lewis missed the beginning of the season, and finished it playing in only 107 games. But over those 107 games, he reminded everyone of just how good he is. Lewis quietly hit .326-11-66, and became our most consistent offensive threat. He has a player option for the 2025 season for $16,770,000... he has normal greed, but if he leaves he will be due a larger contract. It will be interesting to see how that plays out. We finished the season with the best record yet again, another 100 wins. It is, however, getting harder to do. I am glad we won our final 4 games, gives me a good feeling that we will have some momentum on our side heading into the playoffs. We are going up against a tough team with a powerful offense, so hopefully our pitching staff is up for the challenge. 2024 Delaware Conference Preview
NOTE: The Clippers or the Braves have won the leagues last 4 titles!
Milford Clippers Playoff Appearances: 2 Championships: 2 (2021, 2022) Injuries: RF Tadeu Carona: .256-7-27, 62 G SS Cisco Benetiz: .269-6-68, 135 G Keys to Winning: 1) Score runs - the Clippers have ht 4th best offense in the Conference, but they will be going up against the best pitching staff. Having the Conferences lowest HR total won't bode well for this offense. 2) Seth Bennett & Mariano Salazar - The ace and the #2 will need to be on top of their game. Without these 2 the Clippers can't win. 3) Pedro Rivas - Pedro made is big league debut this season, playing in only 1 game, after hitting .227-4-24 in 60 AAA games. Due to the injury to Cisco Benetis Pedro will be thrusted into the starting lineup, playing SS. Lewes Braves Playoff Appearances: 6 Championships: 3 (2020, 2023) Injuries: SS Errol Williams: .242-12-61, 130 G SS Felipe Marquez: .277-9-33, 62 G 3B Don White: .250-5-40, 95 G Keys to Winning: 1) Staying Hot - The Lewes Braves have been the class of the league this year, leading the Delaware Conf in runs and runs against. The Braves come into the playoffs hot winning 12 of their last 16 (2 of those loses were to the Clippers). 2) Staying Young - The Braves are lead by Andres Salinas (.283-25-93) and Totoya Ogawa (.249-41-99) both of these guys are 37 or older and fragile. They will need to continue to play young as they have all season to balance this offense. 3) Defense - The Braves were 5th in defense, and everyone knows bad defense can change the game. Losing Error Williams offense for Eric Harpers defense might be a blessing in disguise. Catcher Jose Rodriguez, who seems to have reinvented himself as a catcher, threw out only 11.7% of attempted base stealers.

2024 MarVa Conference Preview
Chesapeake Blue Crabs
Playoff Appearances: 2 Championships: 0 Injuries: CF Alberto Molinero: .292-28-101, 129 G SP Joe Gould: 1-0 1.38, 2 GS Keys to Winning: 1) Score Runs - The Blue Crabs have the top offense and set a record with 249 HR's this season. Despite missing Alberto Molinero (who would of won the Silver Slugger) the Crabs haven't missed a beat. They have 3 players in their lineup with 30+ HR's and 5 with 20+. 2) Paul Randolp and Dave Watts - The backend of the rotation will have to step it up to win this series. Randolf is coming off an inury and Watts has a 5.15 ERA. 3) The Other Guys - 3B Sanhoe Busones (.253-7-39), 2B Ceaser Silva (.230-5-33), 1B Jose Martinez (.220-10-44) and CF Ramiro Herrera (.240-2-19) will need to step it up and get on base for the big bats. These guys could determine the series. Norfolk Cavaliers Playoff Appearances: 9 Championships: 5 (2014, 2016-2019) Injuries: LF Henry Hamer: .307-28-88, 130 G SP Paul Brown: 17-2 2.52, 202 K's, 23 G SS Augusto Rodriguez: .207-2-30, 103 G SS Anthony Lucarelli: .302-3-23, 48 G MR Taheiji Otani: DNP Keys to Winning: 1) Picking up the Injured Guys - With the Cav's missing their top pitcher and offensive threat, they will need someone to step it up. The prime candidate is Jeff Lewis, who has struggled the past 3 post-seasons (2-20, 2-11, 6-48) 2) Stopping the Bats of the Crabs - The Cav's had the best pitching staff during the regular season, but they will have to step it up to slow down this powerful Crabs offense. 3) Up the Middle - Robinson Lopez (a 2B/3B) will be playing short, Ramon Granados (his 2nd year at 2B) and Sergio Gavlez (1B/RF) will be in Center. Their defense can help slow down the offense, they will ahve to be at the top of their game.

2024 Conference Championships - Game 1
MarVa Conference Championship
Game 1 Starting Lineups Here is a look at the starting line-ups for game one. The Blue Crabs start with lefty Antonio Cortes on the bump, facing off against the Cav's ace Miguel Contreras. I only have 2 lefties in the line-up, so hopefully that is a good thing. We have always struggled against lefties, especially during the playoffs... Contreras will have to tame the DBL version of "Murder's Row"... amazing how tough these would be if Molinero was healthy. ![]() Miguel Contreras started off by striking out the side and the crowd of 43,355 got loud. But their winds were taken out of their sails in the 2nd when the Blue Crabs opened up the scoring with 3 runs. Jose Lopez singled, followed by a Claude Bond double. After a strike-out of Mike Simmons, Xue-qin Xu singled up the middle scoring both Lopez and Bond. Xu moved over to third on a Jose Martinez ground-out then Ceaser Silva singled him home to cap off the scoring. The Cav's made a comeback in the 5th with 2 outs. Sergio Rodriguez singled on a 2-1 count, bring up Sergio Galvez. Galvez drove the 2-2 pitch 389ft over the right-center wall cutting the Crabs lead to 1. In the 7th, Galvez would tie the game with a 1-out 389ft HR, that landed just about where his first one did. The game was tied after 7. However, the lead didn't last long, with light hitting, Ramiro Herrera leading off the 8th with a triple. Contreras would strike out Sanho Busones, but couldn't keep Antonio Casteaneda from singling Herrera in, on 1-2 count. The Cav's tried to get that run back in the bottom half of the eight when Alejandro reached on an error by the center-fielder. Leonard Lawson was brought in the game to run of Diaz and on the 0-1 hit-and-run Lawson would be gunned out trying to steal. Gallegos would reach second on a throwing error by the second basebmen, on the next pitch. Ramon Granados moved him to third on a ground out bring up Mario Gomez with the tying run on third... "Yoo-hyun Kim the ex-Cavalier is in a position to quiet the fans once again with Mario Gomez at the plate... Kim will be pitching from the stretch to Gomez, here is the pitch, off the plate, ball 1... up in the count Gomez should be looking for a pitch to hit here. He comes into he game on a hot streak going 11-17 during the final week of the season... looks like Kim is ready, here is the pitch, Gomez takes an ugly swing at the slider away hitting a soft ground to second. Hicks fields the ball tosses it over to Martinez and the inning is over. The Cav's strand Gallegos at third... Lawson getting gunned out may come back to haunt the Cavaliers, who reach base two times in the inning on errors, but strand one... after 8 the Blue Crabs hold the 4-3 lead..." The 9th for the Cavalier's was uneventful as Lambert would pinch hit for Lopez and single, but that is all they could get. Rodriguez flew out to center, Galvez went down swinging and Jeff Lewis grounded out to third on the full-count... ![]() (image adapted from a post on the sportslogos.com message board) Delaware Conference Championships The clippers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first, thanks to 3 straight hits, the big one a doulbe by Jesus Nunez that scored 2. The Braves would score on in hte bottom half to cut the lead 2-1. The big play was Jorge Alonso getting gunned out at third, just moments after Salinas crossed the plate. The play was reviewed in the booth, and it was offical Salinas scored before the out was made. The Clippers would add one in the 2nd, on 2 more hits, but the Braves would add 2 of their own, the big hit was Pepe Martinez, who doubled in 1 and scored another. After 2 the game was tied at 2. The Braves would take the lead in the 3rd, thanks to a Andres Salinas double. Salinas moved to third on Alonso ground out, and scored on a Derek Campbell ground out... after 3 the Braves lead 4-3. Three singles in row with one out in the 4th would give the Braves another insurance run... A solo HR by Andres Salinas in the 5th gave the Braves a 6-3 lead. The Braves would plate 2 more in the 7th on 2 hits and 2 walks. The big hit by Ryan Warrender a single scoring Salinas and Derek Campbell. Moran would settle down after the 2nd and held the Clippers at bay. Moran went 7 innings, allowing 6 hits, 3 runs and striking out 7... the Ex-Brave, and Golden Arm Winner, Robert Walker didn't make it out of the 5th going 4 innings, allowing 11 hits and 6 runs. He didn't walk or strike out anyone. Andres Salinas of the Lewes Braves went 2-3 with a double and a HR, he scored 4 runs tying the Delaware Conference playoff record.

2024 Conference Championships - Game 2
MarVa Conference Championships
Game 2 Starting Lineups Pressure is on Miguel Angel Gonzalez, the 23 year-old is making his 3rd career post-season start, his first since his incredible Championship series starts last season. He will try to tame the big-bats of the Blue Crabs as the Cav's offense will try to score some runs against the Blue Crabs 21 game winner... ![]() Miguel Angel Gonzalez gave up a lead-off single in the first, after Ramiro Herrera stone second, Gonzalez struck out the side. And that was just the start of an up and down game. In the third the Blue Crabs took the lead. The inning started with the 8 and 9 batters (Jose Martinez and Cesare Silva) singling. Then Herrera doubled, scoring one. After a ground-out moved the runners up, Antonio Castaneda hit a deep fly ball that scored Herrera. When the dust settled the Crabs scored three to take the lead. The Cav's manufactured one in the bottom half of their third. Francisco Gallegos and Ramon Granados both singled, Robinson Lopez moved up them up with a pretty sac-bunt. And then Sergio Galvz fliew out to left, scoring Gallegos. In the fourth the Cav's scored again. King Brock got hit by a 1-0 pitch, moved up to second on a Alejandro Diaz single, a ground out moved them up, and a walk to Gallegos loaded the bases. Ramon Granados singled over the short-stops head scoring one, but Robinson Lopez flew out with 2 outs leaving the bases load. In the fifth the Cav's would tie it up, battling their way back. Sergio Galvez walked on 4 pitches, stole second, but ended up on third when the ball sailed into CF, then scored on a Wally Lambert ground-out. After a quite sixth for both teams, the Blue Crabs jumped on Gonzalez in the top of the 7th. Gonzalez walked Bond to lead-off the inning, which never is a good thing, after the walk a double by Mike Simmons moved him to third, a single by Xue-qin Xu scoring Bond. Jose Martinez followed the double with a grounder to second, which was booted by Granados scoring Simmons. With runners on first and second, Gonzalez would strike out Monte Lyon, then get Ramiro Herrera to ground out and finished the inning by striking out Busones. The Crabs scored 3 to take the lead. The lead didn't last long, as the Cav's answered right back. With one out the Cav's put together a streak of 4 singles: Lopez, Galvez, Lambert and Lewis; which scored 3 runs. After 7 the game was tied at 5. "With one out the lefty Bryan Johns will face switch-hitting Francisco Gallegos. Gallegos hitting from the right-side for the first time this game. Here is the pitch, away for ball one. On the season Gallegos hit .270 against lefties with 5 HR's... Johns is ready, pitch number 2 is on the way, strike one. Gallegos was looking for a pitch and that wasn't it. It looks like he said something to the umpire, so I don't think he was happy with the call... pitch number 3 from Johns on the way, ball 2, Gallegos... Gallegos showed more power this season against lefties, but he is just as dangerous from either side of the plate... With the count in his favor Gallegos will be looking to drive the ball. He has only faced Johns 8 times during his career, and has just a single hit, the pitch is high ball three... With 1 out and a 3-1 count, Gallegos is going to be sitting dead red... Johns is taking his time, with this pitch. Gallegos is 1-22 during his playoff career, and now would be a great time for his 2nd hit... Looks like Johns is finally ready, the pitch, Gallegos swings, he got it, its high, its long, its far, there is on question, the Cav's have the lead. Gallegos was sitting on the heater and Johns threw it right into his wheel house. A clutch hit right there for Gallegos..." In the bottom of the 8th the Cav's would take their first lead of the game thanks to a 397ft solo-shot by Francisco Gallegos with 1 out. After a Granados single, Robinson Lopez would give the Cav's some insurance, by blasting a 417ft shot over the right-center field wall. The Cav's had a 3-run lead heading into the 9th. With four lefties coming up the Cav's decided it was time to pull Gonzalez and brought in the only left in the pen, David Moran. Moran would give up a lead-off single to Mike Simmmons, then got Xue-qin Xu to ground into a big 6-4-3 DP. Jose Martinez follwed the DP with a single, but Moran would end the game by striking out David Hicks. The Cav's tie the series with a big 8-5 win. ![]() Delaware Conference The Clippers took the lead in the first again by touching up Cristobal Diaz for 3 singles... but they quickly lost it as Mariano Salazar couldn't keep the Braves off the scoreboard. The Braves would score 2 on 2 hits and a HBP to take the lead they would never give up. In the bottom of the 8th the Braves added 3 runs, 2 of them came on a 2-run HR by Jorge Alonso, just clearing the right-field wall, on an 0-2 pitch. The next four hits, collected 3 singles, and the Braves had a 5-1 lead with some cushion in the 9th. With Carlos Mateo on the hill for the Braves, the Clippers couldn't get anything going. Lou Brooks struck out swinging, Raul Gutierrez grounded out to first and Pedro Rivas struck out, the Braves had the 5-1 victory and a 2-0 series lead.

2024 Conference Championships - Game 3
MarVa Conference Championships
Game 3 Starting Lineups Game 3 is a big game and we are putting our faith in Cornell Pearson. And that is a little worrying to me. Pearson started the season 8-1 then went 6-8 the rest of the way. His WHIP shot up to 1.21 and he just didn't have the command he had at teh beginning of the year. He did have a solid start against the Blue Crabs this season, despite taking the loss, but that being said he is now 0-3 5.01 in 4 G/3 GS during the playoffs... Paul Randolph is back in the playoffs since appearing with the Lewes Braves in 2020 and 2018. He is 3-4 2.00 ERA in 9 career starts. ![]() The Blue Crabs started off the scoring with 2-outs in the first Antonio Castaneda and Jose Lopez hit back-to-back doubles, with Castaneda plateing the first run of the game. The Cav's would take the lead in the top half of the third thanks to a 2-out single by Jeff Lewis, which scored Robinson Lopez, who singled and moved to second earlier in the inning. Leonard Lawson, in the lineup replacing King Brock, singled up the middle scoring Lewis and giving the Cav's a 2-1 lead. The lead didn't last long, however, as the Blue Crabs scored one, to tie the game, in the bottom half. A throwing error by Robinson Lopez, allowed Antonio Castaneda to reach second. The next batter, with 2-outs, Jose Lopez singled to right. Castaneda touched home and the game was tied. As Pearson settled down, the Cav's would take the lead wiht a run in the 5th and 2 in the 6th... in the 5th it all started with a walk to Sergio Galvez. Galvez promptly stole second base.he would move up to third on a Randolph wild pitch, and the cross home on a Jeff Lewis ground-out. The Cav's took the lead after 5 3-2, and that is all they needed. In the 6th, the Cav's jumped on Randolph, with 1-out Granados, Lopez and Galvez would all single, Granados would score on Galvez's single. 2 batter later Jeff Lewis did it again, single home Lopez, and chasing Randolph. "Here in the 7th the Blue's are mounting a comeback, we have 2-outs and the bases are loaded for Claude Bond... If I was Eric Helton, I would be really nervous... the first pitch is way outside, nice play by Diaz keeping that ball in front of him... Bond one of the games premirere hitters had himself another MVP type season, and now he is out... Bond is a little late on that one fouling it down the right-field line... he is out to prove to the fans that he is worth $20 million a year... here is the 1-1, ball 2... with every pitch Helton is digging himself deeper into a hole. Bond was 8 for 18 against the Cav's this season with a solo-HR, accounting for his lone RBI... The 2-1 pitch is on the way, ball high, thats 3-1, the Cav's faithful must be sweating bullets now. 3-1, bases loaded, up by 2 with Bond at the plate... There have been a lot of rumors out of Norfolk that Helton is on his way out, as he just never amounted to what they ecpected... Maybe this pitch will change their minds or end his tenure... the pitch, Bond swings, its in the hole between third and short, fielded by Lopez, he tosses to Granados at second and the inning is over. What a play. The Cav's work their way out of a bases loaded jam, only allowing 1 run. That has to be a heartbreaker for the Blue's... After 7, the Cav's lead, 5-3..." In the 7th things got hairy for the Cav's, with one-out Pearson lost his touch, giving up 3 straight singles, Silva, Herrera and Busones. And now the bases were loaded for the #3,4 and 5 hitters... Eric Helton was called in to get the Cav's out of the jam. Helton would walk Castaneda, scoring Silva. Then he settled down and retired Jose Lopez and Claude Bond to end the inning. The Cav's held the lead 5-3 and that is how the game would end. Cav's won 5-3, and now hold a 2-1 series lead. ![]() Delaware Conference The Braves took the lead in the top of the first with 2 singles and a sac-fly, but that lead didn't last long as the Clippers jumped back in the bottom of the first, thanks to a two-run shot by Woody Brown. After 1 the Clippers had a lead 2-1. The Clippers would hold the lead till the 7th. With 1-outs Derek Campbell would sit on a 1-0 pitch, for a 2-run HR and a 3-2 lead. The Clippers where 2-outs away from falling behind in 3-0 in the 9th, when they would fight back. The Clippers would load the bases with 1-out and Woody Brown would come up to the plate. Brown would hit a fly ball to deep left-center, just missing his 2nd HR of the game. Matt Grindle would tag and score and tie the game. After 9 innings the game was tied at 3 and the Clippers were still holding on... The Braves, however, would jump on Eisse Bookelman and score 3. Pepe Martinez doubled to start things off, and after a IBB to Herminio Bovay put runners on 1st and 2nd, Eric Harper would ground into a 6-4-3 DP. Then Bookelman couldn't get that third out, giving up a double to Jim Thomas, scoring Martinez, a walk to Alonso, a single to Rivera, scoring Thomas, and then a single to Derek Campbell, which plated Alonso. That was all for Bookelman... After the dust had settled the Braves would score 3 on 4 hits and 2 walks. In the bottom half of the 10th Jesus Nunez lead off with a solo-HR, but that was the only life the Clippers could get. 2-ground outs and a strike out later, the Clippers fall 6-4... Braves win 6-4, lead series 3-0

2024 Conference Championships - Game 4
MarVa Conference Championships
Game 4 Starting Lineups I really want to win game 4. I don't want another 7 game beat the up series like last year. I really feel the 7 game series wore us out for the championship series. So I am going to ask Vaughan Griffith or Armando Lopez to give me the win. I tinkered with the idea of going with Coronado, but in the end I decided to go with Vaughan... this is where the Paul Brown injury really hurts. The Blue Crabs throw another lefty Dave Watts at us. One one of our players has an AB against Watts, so it will be all new to us. Should be an interesting game, one I want to win. ![]() The game was a pitches duel through 5, with the only run coming in the 3rd, when the Cav's scored on a lead-off single by Mario Gomez, who moved to 2nd on a wild pitch, then scored on a Sergio Galvez double... During the bottom of the 5th the Blue Crabs had a runner on first, thanks to a 1-out walk, when Cesar Silva stepped to the plate... "The hitter is Cesar Silva... From the stretch the 1-2 pitch... Silva swings very well hit out to deep right center field... Lewis races back, to the track, he extends -- and gets it!!... He just robbed Cesar Silva of extra bases!.. Thats three down The score is 1-0, Cavaliers over the Blue Crabs" The top of the 6th started off with 2 singles by Sergio Rodriguez and Sergio Galvez, which brought up Jeff Lewis, who just made the fine defensively during the last half of the inning... "With no one out, and 2 men on... Set to hit is Jeff Lewis he is hitless in 2 at-bats... the 2-2 delivery... Lewis with a swing there's a drive toward deep left center field Simmons in pursuit to the track but it clears the wall!... He tore into that one... It's a three-run home run by Jeff Lewis, He hit that one 401 feet... Norfolk is now up 4-0" Alejandro Diaz would reach on an infield hit later in the inning on a botched call by the umpire, but the 3-runs was all the Cav's could get... but they added some insurance runs... In the top of the 8th, the flood gates opened for the Cav's, the Cav's batted around, Jeff Lewis, lead-off and ended the inning striking out, but in between the Cav's would score 6 on 5 hits, 1 error and 2 walks. In the 9th the Cav's would add 2 more, when Alejandro Diaz would collect his 3rd hit in a row, this one a 2-run HR, scoring Leonard Lawson, who lead off the inning with a single. Diaz would finish with 3 hits, almost as if the botched call, on his infield hit in the 6th sparks his momentum... Vaughan Griffith trotted out in the bottom, and the first pitch he threw to Claude Bond would end up 432 ft over the center field wall. Griffith was removed, with the shut-out gone, and David Moran would set down Simmons, Xu and Martinez to end the game. The Cav's would win big, 12-1, taking a 3-1 series lead. The Blue Crabs pitchers just didn't have it today: ![]() Griffith shut me up... I am surprised how well he pitched, the only "big" hit was the HR to Bond, and he was "tired" at that point. He was great and earned his slot in the rotation... now I am sitting pretty with Contreras, Gonzalez and Pearson in line for 5-6-7... ![]() Delaware Conference In the top of the third, the Braves would take the early lead. With one out Herminio Bovay would single to left. He would score, one batter later on an Eric Harper double. Then Harper would score on a 2-run shot by Andres Salinas. The Braves would score 3 in the 3rd. The Clippers would fight back, scoring 3 of their own in the bottom of the 4th... Jesus Nunez singled to lead things off, and with one out, would go to second on a Lou Brooks walk. with runners on first and second, Pat Hall singled to right, scoring Nunez. The play at the plate, allowed Brooks and Hall to move up. With 1-out Pedro Rivas grounded out scoring Brooks. Then a fly ball to left, ended dropping out of Javier Dominquez's glove, allowing Hall to plate the third run of the inning... After 4 the game was tied at 3. In the 5th the Braves would quickly squash any Clippers momentum by scoring 2 and taking the lead for good, and it all started with an error. Francisco Torres hit a sharp grounder to short, which was booted. Bovay followed that with a single to right, moving Torres to third. Eric Harper would double and both runners would score... After 5 the Braves held the 5-3 lead. The Clippers tried to come back in the 7th, putting together a quick 2-out ralley... Javier Trevino and Woody Brown singled, bringing up the power bat of Eduardo Green. Green would single to left, scoring Trevino. A walk to Jesus Nunez loaded the bases for Matt Grindle... Grindle would swing at the third pitch he saw popping out to short and leaving the bases loaded. The next 6 Clippers would be retired in order and the Braves were celebrating their return to the DBL Championship for the 2nd year in a row. Last year they beat the Norfolk Cavaliers in 6 games and they are looking to win their 4 title. Series MVP: Hermino Bovay - .556-0-2 / 10 Hits (2 3-hit games, 2 2-hit games), 4 Runs, 2 RBI's, 2B, 3B ![]() League News: After the game the Blue Crabs received some bad news. They announced that their star RF Jose Lopez is out for the rest of the playoffs. Lopez was hurt on a defensive play and had to be removed from the game. He is expected to miss about 5 weeks with an intercostal strain. During the regular season Lopez hit .303-35-106, during the playoffs Lopez has been contained hitting .267 (4-15) with only 1 RBI.
