It was a dogfight all season long in the Continental League with 7 of the 8 teams with a serious chance of taking the ring. The Shamrocks fell to 4th when they lost Michael Patrick for a month midseason, and for most of August and September it appeared that the Cincinnati Scarlets were the heirs apparent as they rode the bats of Shawn Kienast and Chino Smith, the two top power hitters in the CL, to the top of the standings. However, a late surge by the unlikely Brooklyn Perfectos, a team with no standout players, left them on the sidelines as the boys from the Big Apple headed to the World Series.

For the 5th straight year, the Federal League was a story of the haves and the have-nots with one have-everything by the name of the Boston Pilgrims lording over the whole mess. They've had a chip on their shoulders ever since the debacle of the 1934 World Series, when they were upset by their perpetual nemeses, the Shamrocks. With Satchel Paige, who set a new Federal League record for wins with 32, one more than Dummy Leitner's mark in 1901....and one shy of Michael Patrick's mark in the CL, the Pilgrims hit 110 wins for the 3rd straight season. They should walk all over the Perfectos in the World Series. Anything less than that would be embarassing.

RYAN GLEASON, 2B, DETROIT WOLVERINES, 32 Years Old - Any semblance of power is completely gone from Gleason's game, but he's made up for it by continuing to put his bat on the ball. He passed 2000 hits in May and look to be a good bet to reach 3000.

"Wild Bill" Hallahan - 4-2, 3.10 ERA, 33 Saves

There hasn't been such a lopsided meeting in the postseason in decades. If statistics are the benchmarks for comparing the teams, the Perfectos seem like a AAA squad compared to the monster numbers put up by the Pilgrims. Continental Leagues fans point to the "higher competition" in their league, explaining away the Pilgrims' dominance by claiming weaker opponents....and there may be some validity to that analysis. It's unlikely that it will make much difference, though. The Pilgrims should regain their swagger after this series.

PREDICTION: Pilgrims in 5

1935 WORLD SERIES

9/27/1935 - GAME 1 PILGRIMS 6 - PERFECTOS 9

Brooklyn got out to an early 4-0 lead over Van Mungo, but the Pilgrims battled back to tie it with 4 runs in the 5th. Boston eventually took the lead by 1 in the 7th, but 4 Perfectos runs in the bottom half of the inning put the game out of reach, despite being outhit 17 to 10. John Stone led the way with 3 hits and 3 RBI.

9/28/1935- GAME 2 PILGRIMS 2 - PERFECTOS 3, 10 innings

Elmer Miller surprisingly held his own against Satchel Paige, allowing the bullpen to come in and shut the Pilgrims down the rest of the way. In the 10th, with the game tied at 2, pinch-hitter Terry Moore extended the game by reaching on a John Beckwith error and Jimmy O'Connell knocked him in one out later to put the Perfectos up 2 games to zip in front of a jubilant crowd. The Boston dugout is mute with silence.

9/30/1935 - GAME 3 PERFECTOS 4 - PILGRIMS 0

Ray Prim continues the amazing Brooklyn dominance with a 4-0 whitewashing of Boston. The Pilgrims again outhit the Perfectos, but Brooklyn's hits are much more timely. Joe Medwick leads with 2 hits and 2 RBI. One more win and the Pilgrims could be the victim of the greatest upset in decades.

10/1/1935 - GAME 4 PERFECTOS 2 - PILGRIMS 3

John Beckwith somewhat made up for his Game 2 error by leading the Pilgrims with a double and a triple, and holding off the Perfectos for at least one more game. With Satchel Paige pitching next, the momentum has a chance a shifting, but can they come back from a 3 game deficit?

10/2/1935 - GAME 5 PERFECTOS 5 - PILGRIMS 4

The Brooklyn magic appeared to have faded as Satchel Paige held the Perfectos bats at bay for 8 innings. Down 4-2 in the 9th, it appeared that Game 6 was an inevitability, but Joe Medwick had other ideas, knocking 2 runs and sparking a rally off Paige that eventually gave them the game and the series before a disgusted Boston crowd. Perhaps the Pilgrims 5 straight World Series appearances are simply the result of weaker competition in the Federal League after all.

1935 WORLD CHAMPS - BROOKLYN PERFECTOS
3rd Championship

SERIES MVP: Joe Medwick - .545, 1 2b, 1 HR, 7 RBI

NOTEWORTHY EVENTS - 1935

* Italicized events actually happened. If the event is partially italicized, the parts in normal type have been changed for this reality. The changes could be extremely minor or quite significant.

  • January 4 - The Biscuit Uprising: As the Depression wanes across most of the world, Great Britain sink deeper into poverty. Unemployment reaches a staggering 28%. Figures of the aging King Arthur and Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin are hung in effigy by an angry mob on New Year's Day outside Parliament and police summoned to quell the violence are pelted with stale biscuits, a staple of the lower class diet.
  • January 6 - Ferenc Szalasi, Getulio Vargas and Benito Mussolini meet in Naples to discuss future relations between the Magyar Dominion, Brazil and Italy.
  • January 7 - The Italian colony of Cyrenaica in Northern Africa is ceded to the Magyar Dominion in the Naples Agreement, a non-aggression pact signed by Italy, Brazil and the Magyar Dominion. Italy and Brazil are also given Privileged Trade Status in the Dominion.
  • January 8 - Elvis Presley is born in a two room shotgun house in Tupelo, Mississippi.
  • January 10 - Jay Berwanger, University of Chicago football star, becomes the first player to ever win the Heisman Trophy.
  • January 11 - Amelia Earhart becomes the first person to fly solo from Hawaii to California

  • January 22 - Sir Oswald Mosley, of the House of Commons, submits his Mosley Memorandum, a bill calling for extremely high tariffs to protect British industries from international finance, for state nationalization of industry and a program of public works to solve unemployment. Although met with strong opposition, it narrowly passes, vaulting Mosley into the national spotlight and marking him as a "champion of the common man".
  • January 28 - Iceland becomes the first country to legalize abortion on medical grounds.
  • February - National Periodical Publications (later known as DC Comics) publishes its first comic book, New Fun Comics, the first comic book featuring original material.
  • March - The Kaposvár concentration camp is established; 50,000 detainees of "indeterminable heritage" are shipped in over the next couple of months.
  • March 2 - King Prajadhipok (Rama VII) of Siam abdicates the throne. He is succeeded by his 9 year old nephew Ananda Mahidol (Rama VIII).
  • March 11 - In Great Britain, Sir Oswald Mosley publicly calls the Magyar Dominion "a model society to emulate". He begins to dress in a black quasi-military uniform in public. Soon, fellow "blackshirts" begin to appear all over Great Britain.
  • March 22 - Joseph Goebbels, the Magyar Dominion's ambassador to Great Britain, meets with Mosley to "discuss philosophies", beginning a relationship between the two that will last for years.

  • Spring - Charles Richter and Beno Gutenberg develop the Richter magnitude scale for quantifying earthquakes.
  • April - The Brazilian Navy begins "military maneuvers" in the Northern Caribbean, straying dangerously close to U.S. waters
  • April 23 - President Landon orders increased naval patrols in the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico.

  • July 5 - The National Labor Relations Act, a federal law that protects the rights of most workers in the private sector to organize labor unions, to engage in collective bargaining, and to take part in strikes and other forms of concerted activity in support of their demands, is signed into law by President Alf Landon.
  • August - Due to the success of Kaposvár, the Magyar Dominion establishes concentration camps in Debrecen, Thannhausen and Auschwitz.
  • August 15 - Humorist Will Rogers and aviator Wiley Post are killed when Post's plane crashes shortly after takeoff near Barrow, Alaska.
  • September 2 - Labor Day Hurricane of 1935: A large hurricane hits the Florida Keys killing 423. It devastates a part of the Keys, breaking the islands' road and rail connections to mainland Florida
  • September 30 - U.S. President Alf Landon dedicates Kennedy Dam
  • October 2-3 - A combined force composed of the Italian and Magyar armies invade Ethiopia under Italian General Emilio de Bono and Admiral Miklos Horthy of the Magyar Dominion.

We'll be having occasional delays in this since I'm now the commissioner of a league: PBRL. Whenever we enter the offseason, my attention will be entirely focussed on getting the next season ready.

Right now we're heading into 1916 and I have a ton of work getting players back from the Federal League, in addition to the usual rigmarole.

I should have some more posts in 2-3 days.
