It was probably because of the last foul that he did get dismissed for the handball.

Are players trying to lose? Whats with all the stupid penalties?
If you already have one yellow then you should offer the ref nothing to give you a second one for.

Now they must play 45 minutes a man down with a tenious 1-0 lead

Just stupid

To be fair, the ref made the right decision on this occasion - Costinha didn't need to deliberately handball it in centerfield.

Good first half after the goal by Portugal. Dutch will go all out in the 2nd especially with Portugal down to 10 men

Even so its ridiculous that the rules of the game dont allow for gradiations of yellow cards. To be kicked out of a match for that foul is absurd. It robs millions of fans from around the world a chance to watch a dynamic fluid match. It would be better to award a penelty kick than an ejection. Ehections should be reserved solely for dangerous play

The thing is though, the players all know the rules. it was a complete dumb ass move to commit that handball especially knowing that you are al ready on a yellow.

You are right in that it could kill the game... Portugal might just sit on their lead and let the Dutch try to score against a completely defensive formation

I should have thought of that. Wish there would be a dialog on the entire card system and how it could be improved.

One idea was to add a third card - a "green card" like they have in field hockey.
But when you see the trouble some referees have at counting to two, just imagine what it would be if they had three levels of cards.
It would just be too confusing for the officials, players, and spectators alike.

The other idea often mooted is to have a "sin bin" yellow card - where you would be off for 10 minutes on receipt of a caution.

Sin bin seems to work well in Rugby
