January 1910 title fights
We have some good ones this month. In 4 out of the 5 fights the #1 contender is fighting for the title.
LH - (WBA) Jack O'Brien (1) (24-4-1) vs. Joe Butler (2) (30-7-2) They have never fought and this fight is for the vacant WBA Lightheavyweight title MW - (WBA) Frank Klaus (ch) (15-6-1) vs Billy McCarthy (1) (25-10-3) First meeting WW - (WBC) Peter Jackson (CH) (23-3) vs Joe Gans (1) (28-4-3) Third meeting with Jackson winning by TKO6 in 1907 and KO10 in 1908. Jackson says this is the last chance he'll give Gans for the WBC title. LW - (WBA) Jack McAuliffe (CH) (32-5-2) vs. Eddie Hanlon (1) (12-3-1) First meeting, this is the 4th straight time Jack has defended the WBA and not the WBC. The WBC president has said if McAuliffe does not defend the WBC in his next fight he will strip the title. FW - (WBA/C) Jem Driscoll (CH) (33-5-1) vs Billy Snailham (A3/C2) (15-2) Snailham at pre-prime |

Herrera destroys Erne
I am going to list the before and after rankings now on the fight cards listed as (before/after) all rankings will be the WBA rankings unless it's a title fight for another organization. Also I will list my scorecard on the fights I watch in bold.
January 11, 1910 Aurelio Herrera (17/11) (17-8) throws his name back into the mix with his 4th straight win. This one an impressive KO10 over Young Erne (40/38) (11-6) (Erne at pre). Herrera dropped Erne less than a minute into the fight and never looked back. Herrera attacked Erne relentlessly throughout the fight. Erne's left eye started swelling in the 7th. He also started carrying his hands low in the 8th. Herrera dropped Erne twice in the 9th and then dropped him for good to start the 10th. I had it 90-81 at the time of the stoppage. On the undercard LW - Kid McPartland (15/15) (17-16-4) DQ2 Solly Smith (2/8) (17-16-3) (Smith stepped up to LW in a weight adjusted fight) BW - Johnny Hughes (1/1) (11-2-5) MD10 Jimmy Williams (25/20) (7-7-2) (williams at pre, Hughes stepped up from FLY in this weight adjusted fight) HW - Charlie Wilson (63/44) (9-8-3) KO6 Billy Woods (27/47) (13-13-2) (woods at post) FW - Sammy Kelly (26/13) (11-8-1) SD10 Tommy Love (30/30) (9-4-3) (love at pre) 96-95 Kelly MW - WC McClellan (club) (14-25-4) UD10 Dick O'Brien (club) (3-18-1) (mcclellan at end, O'brien at post for this club fight) Last edited by mh2365; 01-09-2006 at 08:27 PM. |

Driscoll humiliates Snailham
I am going to list the before and after rankings now on the fight cards listed as (before/after) all rankings will be the WBA rankings unless it's a title fight for another organization. Also I will list my scorecard on the fights I watch in bold.
January 14, 1910 Jem Driscoll (WBA/C) (34-5-1) told everyone who would listen that Billy Snailham (3/4) (15-3) wasn't ready for him and then went out and proved it. Driscoll almost pitched a shutout in route to a UD15, in a fight that should have been stopped around the 8th. Snailham's right eye started to swell shut in the third and was red in the 7th and the 8th. By the 10th it was red to start the round. Somehow the fight wasn't stopped. Snailham was down once in the 10th and twice in the 14th. In the 15th Driscoll stayed away from the challenger and said after the fight that after taking a beating like that Snailham deserved to finish the fight. I had it 149-133 as did Shane Macleod ringside. The official judges had it 147-135/149-133/148-134. Driscoll landed 577 to Snailham's 153. Driscoll also landed 64% of his punches to Snailham's 13%. On the undercard FW - Young Pluto (UR/7) (14-1) UD10 Tommy White (27/18) (10-7-3) (pluto at pre) 96-95 pluto HW - Jack Root (27/30) (31-9-2) DRAW10 Bob Armstrong (20/6) (24-11-5) (still unsure about the ranking here) LH - Billy McColl (27/20) (10-11) TKO7 Sailor Brown (UR/28) (7-6-2) (brown at pre, down 8 times in the fight) FW - Eddie Lenny (40/32) (9-7-4) SD10 Jimmy Devine (UR/38) (10-4-1) (Devine at pre) MW - Frank Glover (club) (16-18) KO10 Jim Judge (club) (8-12-2) (glover at post, Judge stepped up to MW for this club fight) |

Butler wins second title
I am going to list the before and after rankings now on the fight cards listed as (before/after) all rankings will be the WBA rankings unless it's a title fight for another organization. Also I will list my scorecard on the fights I watch in bold.
January 17, 1910 Joe Butler (2/CH) (31-7-2) won a title in his second weight class when he took over the title fight with Jack O'Brien (1/2) (24-5-1) with a 7th round knock-down to cruise onto a UD15. Butler was way behind going into the 7th with most accounts having him lose 5 out of the first 6 rounds. He dropped O'Brien in the 7th, and changed the whole pace of the fight. O'Brien went down again in the 11th and the 12th and seemed in survival mode from there on out. Butler who won the MW title in 1905 is 9-0-1 as a lightheavyweight. I had the fight 144-140 as did ringside expert Jeff Riddolls. The official judges had it 145-137/144-138/142-140. On the undercard LW - Frank Erne (22/13) (16-5-2) UD10 Eddie Connolly (38/39) (9-10-2) HW - Joe Coburn (30/8) (22-11-4) TKo5 Frank Childs (10/20) (21-15-5) HW - Marvin Hart (72/50) (16-15-4) TKO10 Jem Mace (32/60) (16-12-2) HW - Paul Samson-Korner (UR) (9-1) Tech Dec7 Billy Cadman (UR) (3-4-4) (both at pre in this club fight) WW - Jack O'Keefe (UR) (8-2-2) UD8 Whitey Lester (UR) (7-4) (both at pre, Lester stepped up to WW in this club fight) |

third times the charm for Gans
I am going to list the before and after rankings now on the fight cards listed as (before/after) all rankings will be the WBA rankings unless it's a title fight for another organization. Also I will list my scorecard on the fights I watch in bold.
January 19, 1910 On his 4th try (third against Jackson) Joe Gans (1/CH) (29-4-3) finally won a title in his second weight class. Gans scored a SD15 over Peter Jackson (CH/1) to win the WBC Welterweight title and stop Jackson's 4 year reign as champ. Jackson came out overconfident and promptly fell behind, losing 4 out of the first 5 rounds. He battled back almost to even but then fell behind again losing rounds 11 and 12. The two split the last 4 rounds and both felt they had done enough to win. Gans had some swelling in his left eye from the 6th round on but other than that there were no cuts or knockdowns I had 144-141 Gans. George Thorn, ringside, had it 145-140. The official judges had it 142-143/144-141/146-139. On the undercard BW - Watty Austin (23/17) (12-12-3) UD10 Harry Tenney (19/16) 96-94 WW - Dixie Kid (22/11) (18-15-5) UD10 William "Spike" Sullivan (27/28) (13-6-2) 98-90 BW - George Wright (UR) (10-3) MD10 Ned Morris (UR/29) (5-8-2) (both at pre) LH - Jim Hall (club) (16-19-2) TKO7 Louis Lester (UR) (4-8-2) (lester at pre, hall at post, hall stepped up to LH for this club fight) LW - Yankee Schwartz (UR) (9-1-1) SD8 Kid Farmer (club) (5-19-2) (Schwartz at pre, Farmer at post, Schwartz stepped up to LW for this weight adjusted club fight) |

Klaus retains title
I am going to list the before and after rankings now on the fight cards listed as (before/after) all rankings will be the WBA rankings unless it's a title fight for another organization. Also I will list my scorecard on the fights I watch in bold.
January 25, 1910 Frank Klaus (CH) (16-6-1) scored a TKO5 over Billy McCarthy (1/2) (25-11-3) to win his first defense of the WBA Middleweight title. The first four rounds were all pretty close with them probably being split 2-2. Early in the 5th Klaus caught McCarthy with a shot to the jaw which Billy started bleeding from the mouth from. Klaus then went two minutes landing every shot and McCarthy wasn't fighting back and the ref stopped the fight. On the undercard MW - Dan Creedon (22/6) (24-12-1) TKO3 Mike Donovan (31/33) (21-18-5) WW - Kyle Whitney (12/7) (15-4-3) UD10 Wildcat Ferns (14/11) (12-4) (ferns at pre) 98-94 LW - Joe Ellingsworth (UR) (11-2) MD10 George Washington (45/40) (8-5-3) (both at pre) WW - Mike Glover (UR) (10-0-2) MD8 Dick Burge (club) (16-20-2) (glover at pre, burge at post... glover steps up to main with the win in this club fight) 77-75 LW - Jack Lynch (UR) (8-2) UD8 Rudy Unholz (UR) (6-2) (both at pre in this club fight) |

McAuliffe outslugs Hanlon
I am going to list the before and after rankings now on the fight cards listed as (before/after) all rankings will be the WBA rankings unless it's a title fight for another organization. Also I will list my scorecard on the fights I watch in bold.
January 28, 1910 Jack McAuliffe (CH) (33-5-2) found himself in a slugfest but pulled out a UD15 over Eddie Hanlon (1/2) (12-4-1). It looked like it would be an early night for the champ when he dropped Hanlon in the 3rd. Hanlon was then beaten senseless on the ropes until the bell rang. McAuliffe came out swinging in round 4 but was careless and got rocked and then dropped midway through the round. The next 5 rounds were back and forth action with Hanlon's mouth starting to bleed in the 7th. The champ took control of the fight then winning the 10th through the 12th and then dropping Hanlon again in the 13th. Hanlon wasn't done yet as he dropped McAuliffe yet again in the 14th. The two slugged it out toe to toe through the bell of the 15th. An early candidate for fight of the year. I had it 144-139. Aurelio Barrios, ringside, had it 144-138. The official judges all had it 143-139. On the undercard FW - Jimmy Briggs (6/3) (13-10-5) UD10 Ben Jordan (10/22) (10-4-3) (Jordan was at pre, Jordan was straight robbed in this fight I had it 97-94 for jordan and the ringside expert had it 97-93 for Jordan yet all three official judges scored it 96-94 for Briggs) FW - Kid Broad (42/44) (12-8-1) KO10 Martin Flaherty (35/45) (8-11-3) LH - Patsy Cardiff (9/4) (13-12) UD10 James Barry (20/24) (9-7-1) (barry at pre) WW - Sammy Smith (23/16) (8-6-3) UD10 Cy Flynn (28/29) (9-7) (both fighters at pre) HW - Jack Stelzner (club) (18-22-4) SD10 Tug Wilson (club) (13-20-1) (stelzner at post, Wilson at end for this club fight) |

End of January 1910
Good Championship month in January. We saw a new LH champ crowned. We saw WW - Peter Jackson's long winning streak and title reign come to an end. We also saw a great fight between McAuliffe and Hanlon.
Several fighters moved from club to main and several fighters debuted in the rankings. Moving up (all club to main) HW - Denver Ed Smith (18-18-2) WW - Willie Schaeffer (10-1), Owen Ziegler (15-15), Mike Glover (10-0-2) LW - Horace Leeds (10-2), Lockport Jimmy Duffy (10-0-1) BW - Barney Finnegan (8-6-1) FLY - Jack Foy (6-6-3) Debut Ranking HW - Mexican Pete Everett (11-4) (A35/C39/F35) LH - Frank Gotch (9-6) (A17/C18) LH - Charlie Haghey (11-4) (A18/C20) LH - Sailor Brown (7-6-2) (A27/C26) MW - Ed Denfass (10-5) (A24/C24) WW - Fighting Kennedy (9-6) (A24/C26) LW - Kid Black (7-7-1) (A36/C32) LW - Chicago Dave Barry (6-9) (A45/C45) FW - Frank Maguire (9-5-1) (A24/C29) FW - Frank Robson (10-1-4) (A18/C20) FW - Monk Newsboy (8-7) (A38/C41) FW - Boss Edwards (7-7-1) (A41/C40) FW - Young Pluto (14-1) (A7/C8) FW - Jimmy Devine (10-4-1) (A37/C36) BW - Barney Finnegan (8-6-1) (A26/C26) BW - Ned Morris (5-8-2) (A29/C30) FLY - Jack Foy (6-6-3) (A4/C4) Last edited by mh2365; 04-15-2007 at 08:08 PM. |

Beginners for February 1910
94 out of the 193 begginers were in action this month and they went 75-12-7
Using the newest beta aging patch (he fixed the problem with the manual change of career stage) some fighters moved up on their own and some were moved because they had their max of eight fights in the beginner stage. The following moved up to club HW - Walter Alteri (8-0), Ned Cheeley (5-0-3), Jem Roche (3-3-3), Gunboat Smith (8-0) LH - Jack Geyer (8-0), Alfred Kearns (6-1-1) LW - Joe Gregg (7-0-1), George Jansen (6-1-1), jig Stone (8-0), Kid Trembles (6-1-1), Kid Frederick (7-0), Mike Ward (6-0-1) FLY - Bill Ladbury (5-0-2) |

Division Power Rankings
New rating that I forgot to post at the end of the year. Starting at the end of 1910 this will be added into P4P ratings.
1. Welter 5.4 2. Middle 5.16 3. Bantam 5.03 4. Light 4.93 5. Feather 4.42 6. Fly 4.31 7. Heavy 3.13 8. LightHeavy 2.96 Now of course HW's are hurt by the number of fighters in the division and the numerous 1 and 2 rated fighters. LH is hurt since it is made up of HW castoffs and they lost Fitzsimmons at the start of the year. The lower weights will probably always be higher since not as many stiffs are rated for those divisions. But it does matter since HW's have much more of a chance of fighting 1,2 and 3's than the lower weights do and it helps inflate records which counts in the P4P rankings. |
