Jacksonville Jays (14-9 .609 0 GA tied for 1st place in the Southern Division) at
Memphis Mules (9-14 .391 5 GB in 7th place in the Southern Division)

JAX: Dave Buchalter (27-R) (0-1 11.25 ERA 4 IP, 5 H, 0 HR, 1 BB, 1 SO)
MEM: Dave Gray (35-R) (0-2 6.18 ERA 27.2 IP, 31 H, 2 HR, 15 BB, 17 SO)

Buchalter is making his 2nd start of the season and 1st in 2 weeks. I spent all morning trying to find this Choctaw fellow that someone told be about at the hotel last night. I had mentioned that it would be nice if today's game was rained out, so we would not have to send poor Buchalter to face this Memphis lineup that is murder to right-handers and they told me I should find this particular Choctaw and get him to do a rain dance. Well, I could not find the fellow that they mentioned, but I was led to another Choctaw fellow who at first did not seem to know anything about rain dances, but after I told him I was willing to pay for one, he admitted that he knew something about them and could perform one that would guarantee rain within 24 hours. I told him I needed the rain in 8 hours and he said there was one that would do that, but it was very demanding on the spirit and he did not want to hazard it. After some haggling, I finally got him to do it for $500. Once he started, I soon suspected that he was making it up as he went along, but I did not want to insult his culture and kept my mouth shut and paid him the money when he was done. But game time is here and the skies do not have a single cloud to be seen anywhere..... This is not going to be pretty, so you may want to make the kids leave the room...........

Gray was 9-12 with a 3.23 ERA in 228.1 IP last year and 9-16 with a 4.00 ERA in 211.1 IP in 2003. He is 3-3 in 8 starts against the Jays in his career with a 3.97 ERA. 47.2 IP, 44 H, 3 HR, 21 BB, 26 SO.

We sent 1B Dave Thompson (29-R) to Daytona Beach (A) and recalled PH Mike Volkman (37-L).

We are back home to host the Louisville Colonels for a short 2 game set. They were swept in 4 games at home versus Charlotte over the weekend. They swept us in 3 games the first time they visited, April 15-17, and we only scored 5 total runs. They are 14th in scoring with 3.24 runs per game (Jacksonville is up to 8th with 3.92). They are hitting 10 points better than us (.237 to .227) but are last in the MLB with only 7 HR. We are 5th with 21. The Colonels are 4th in fewest runs allowed with 3.52 per game (Jacksonville is back to #1 with 2.52!). Their run differential is -7, 11th in the MLB, and ours is +35, now 2nd to Ottawa (+44).

Louisville Colonels (12-13 .480 4 GB in 4th place in the Southern Division) at

Calice won his 1st game of the season last time out, allowing 1 run on 7 hits, 1 home run and no walks with 3 strikeouts in 8.1 innings.

The Hartford Whalers are here to play a 4 game series through the weekend. They just lost a pair of games at home to Providence and have lost 6 in a row and 9 of their last ten. We were 6-2 against them last year when they finished 55-107 in last place in the North. We have won more games against them than any other team in the North in our history. And I just realized that the Jacksonville Jays hold the MLB records for most wins in a season and the most losses! The Whalers are 13th in scoring with 3.36 runs per game (Jacksonville is #9 with 3.70). They are 6th in fewest runs allowed with 3.84 per game (Jacksonville is #2 with 2.63). Their run differential is -12, tied for 10th in the MLB, and ours is +29, still #2.

Hartford Whalers (11-14 .440 6 GB in 6th place in the Northern Division) at
Jacksonville Jays (16-11 .593 0 GA tied for 1st place in the Southern Division)

JAX: Jim Baucom (23-L) (5-0 1.26 ERA 50 IP, 35 H, 2 HR, 6 BB, 43 SO) Ace/Hurler/All-Star(3: 02-04)

Lockamy announced today that this would be his final season. He was 6-13 with a 4.47 ERA in 175 IP last year and 0-5 with a 5.79 ERA in 8 starts in 2003. He is 0-1 in 2 starts against the Jays in his career with a 4.70 ERA. 7.2 IP, 8 H, 0 HR, 7 BB, 4 SO.

Baucom gave up 2 runs on 6 hits, 1 home run and no walks with 7 strikeouts in a CG win last time out.

Bottom of the Ninth
On the Hill: Alex Rosales (32-L), a supposed meatball pitcher (5.86 ERA in 81.1 IP last year), who is pitching with abdominal soreness which supposedly affects his throwing motion. Apparently, it has affected his motion for the better, because he has pitched 2 perfect innings so far today..... 8-9-1 up for us. PH Dave Estey (23-L) takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. He steals 2nd..... That is the most useless steal in history.... So what if they turn a double play; we'll still score a run... The only thing that steal accomplished is to take the bat out of our best hitter's hands.... Manny strikes again! They walk Ray McDonald intentionally to load the bases up with no outs. Trudy cleared P Mike Marsh (24-R) to play a few days ago, but he still had mandatory DL time to serve, so he was activated today. Trudy also gave us the news that P Tommy Keyser (25-L) is still being bothered by his sore elbow and she cannot say when he will be ready to go again..... Why does she give us estimates? They never seem to be right.... Maybe we need a new trainer... What, Pia? You'll quit if I fire Trudy? I am not going to fire Trudy; I was just thinking out loud...

We also put P Al Calice (24-R) and P Dave Buchalter (27-R) on a train to Daytona Beach (A). Now the problem is who to call up to be our 5th starter? I was hoping it would we our 5th round pick in this year's B Leagues Draft, Dick Wellborn (21-R), but he just walked 8 in his last start, setting a new team record for the Admirals.... Jose Azamar (27-R), our 8th round pick in 2003, has the best ERA of anyone at 2.93, but the A Ball hitters are hitting over .300 against him and he had a 5.38 ERA last year.... I guess it has to be Ernesto Noyola (25-R), our 4th round pick in 2002. He has a 4.50 ERA, but has had 3 good starts in a row with 25 IP, 19 H, 1 HR, 5 BB and 21 SO and a 1.80 ERA.

Our two relief hopefuls that we drafted this year, by the way, have walked 17 between them in 18.1 IP......

Hartford Whalers (12-16 .429 7 GB in 6th place in the Northern Division) at
Jacksonville Jays (18-12 .600 1 GB in 2nd place in the Southern Division)

HART: Alex Barrera (24-L) (1-1 6.35 ERA 22.2 IP, 24 H, 0 HR, 14 BB, 7 SO)
JAX: Mike Marsh (24-R) (3-1 1.52 ERA 29.2 IP, 18 H, 1 HR, 7 BB, 24 SO) All-Star

Barrera was 1-15 with a 5.81 ERA in 25 starts and 134.2 IP last year. If he shuts us down today, we will make BIG changes..... He was 0-1 in 2 starts against us last year with a 5.11 ERA. 12.1 IP, 16 H, 0 HR, 3 BB, 9 SO.

Marsh has not pitched in 2 weeks. Last time out, he went 5 shutout innings and allowed 4 hits and no walks with 4 strikeouts before leaving with an injury.

We are in Buffalo to play the Bombers a 4 game series and then head right back home. They lost 3 of 4 here to Memphis over the weekend. We were 6-2 against them last year when they finished 98-64, choking their way to 2nd place in the North. It was the first time we had won a season series from them. Believe it or not, they are currently 12th in scoring with 3.34 runs per game (Jacksonville is #9 with 3.74). They have been without the services of 3-time All-Star RF Ivan Moreno (33-L) so far this season, but he is currently on a rehab assignment in Erie (A) and due back any time. Hopefully, not until after this series is over. The Bombers are 4th in fewest runs allowed with 3.55, despite playing in the best hitter's park in the MLB (Jacksonville is #2 with 2.84). Their run differential is -6, 10th in the MLB, and ours is +28, now 3rd best, behind Ottawa and Richmond (both +41).

Jacksonville Jays (19-12 .613 1 GB in 2nd place in the Southern Division) at
Buffalo Bombers (17-12 .586 2 GB in 3rd place in the Northern Division)

JAX: Danny Coreano (26-L) (1-1 4.26 ERA 12.2 IP, 10 H, 2 HR, 3 BB, 6 SO)
BUF: Danny Belsky (32-R) (2-1 3.02 ERA 41.2 IP, 31 H, 2 HR, 16 BB, 23 SO) All-Star

Coreano gave up 5 runs on 6 hits, 2 home runs and 2 walks with 3 strikeouts in 6 innings last time out in a loss.

Belsky was 12-7 with a 3.06 ERA in 164.2 IP last year and 10-13 with a 3.09 ERA in 230 IP in 2003. He is 3-3 in 8 starts against the Jays in his career with a 3.42 ERA. 55.1 IP, 47 H, 6 HR, 15 BB, 31 SO.

Baucom has torn his labrum and is out for the season........ Not a single whiff of an injury in 5 years....... I can't even talk right now.........
