Monday, July 2, 1951 NIRL 2ND STILL CLOSE, JOLIET UP BY 1 ON AVALON Down to the last two games, the Joliet Green Giants and the Avalon Oldtimers are still duking it out... the Green Giants have a scant one-game lead... Yesterday Joliet came very close to losing, but they got a gift-wrapped win from the fourth place Kinston Firebirds in a 5-4 squeaker... and it took a while before Avalon pulled away and defeated fifth place West Chester 7-4... elsewhere third place Theodore skimmed by last place Wafford 6-5. |

Saturday, July 7, 1951 JACKSON, DUTTON, CO-LEADERS IN NIRL 1ST RACE In the North Island First Division the Jackson Jackalopes and the Dutton Coyotes are still locked in a tie for the top spot with only two more games to go in the season... should they both win this Sunday, the division crown will definitely be settled the last weekend of the season when they play each other at Dutton Civic Stadium. This weekend the Jacks (13-5) will be at Jackson Park up against the third place New Yerby Yankees (9-9)... meanwhile Dutton (13-5) will be meeting the third place Kofa Kings (9-9) on the road at Municipal Stadium... in the last contest, two clubs who will be relegated to the Second Division next year, last place Union Heights (3-15) and fifth place Stockdale (7-12), will tangle at Stockdale City Stadium. GIANTS LEAD INTO THE HOME STRETCH IN 2ND DIVISION There are only two games left on the North Island Second Division schedule and first place Joliet (14-4) has a one-game edge over runner-up Avalon (13-5)... both clubs have already won promotion upward to the NIRL First Division next year. Tomorrow afternoon both teams will be out of town... the Green Giants take on the last place Wafford Eagles (4-14)... Avalon travels to Kinston to play the fourth place Firebirds (7-11)... and lastly, third place Theodore (10-8) will be in West Chester pitted against the fifth place Comets (6-12). |

MY LIFE IN 1951
"Not so much fun in '51" Since I was a country DJ for most of my 32 years in radio, I will share this song with all of you little darlin's and all of you buckaroos. Here's mighty Merle Haggard singing about 'the way it was in '51". https://www.bing.com/videos/search?q...3345&FORM=VIRE Sorry, I have been remiss in my civic duties... EC's just havin' fun in '51... now is the time to get "down right searse" (Southern for "serious") and let you know what really going on in the real world in July, 1951. According to mighty Merle in that song, we got the "bad Korean War" still going on... Communist North Korea and Red China are trying to take over the Korean peninsula... the UN Forces and US Allies are trying to protect the democratic nation of South Korea... things have not gone well... the US disarmed after WWII and we were not ready to go up against the Communists, who had well-equipped armies and lots of soldiers... we are no doing well at all, especially in the early months of the war... we would like peace. (From Wikipedia) The Korean War was among the most destructive conflicts of the modern era, with approximately 3 million war fatalities and a larger proportional civilian death toll than World War II or the Vietnam War. It incurred the destruction of virtually all of Korea's major cities, thousands of massacres by both sides (including the mass killing of tens of thousands of suspected communists by the South Korean government), and the torture and starvation of prisoners of war by the North Korean command. North Korea became among the most heavily-bombed countries in history. The US suffered 34,000 deaths... almost 2,000,000 served in the Korean War... it began in October, 1950... my cousin Charles served aboard the carrier Bon Homme Richard as an arresting gear operator... he stopped the planes when they were landing on the carrier.... he's the one, who used to pick me up every Sunday and take me to his Monumental Red Sox's ballball games in 1950... he is the prime reason I love baseball and sports.. I really owe a lot to my cousin Charles... also my Uncle Gene was in the Army... he served for two long, hard years, rising to the rank of sergeant... he didn't say much about his war experience other than it was pure hell... Uncle Gene said the winter weather was horribly cold... and the battles were just killing fields... he told me guys would shoot their toes off, so they could go home. Uncle Gene came home with both feet... alive and well... and with a sound mind, thank goodness. Uh Oh! I forgot that my Uncle Bill also served valiantly and courageously in the Korean War, too... he used to tell me war stories, too... Uncle Bill served valiantly and courageously in Puerto Rico as an Army cook. ![]() These stories are taken from the archives of the New Orleans Times-Picayune newspaper, dated Sunday, July 1, 1951... the Sunday paper cost 15 cents and contained 127 pages... and it was filled with page after page of ads... sort of like the World Series with those entirely too long 3-minutes commercial breaks ad infinitum and ad nauseum

Hey guys and gals... be honest with EC.
Do you read the "My Life" excerpts? Or just skip over them? Do you just follow the baseball portion? No hard feelings if you do that... I skip over lots of things in other people's dynasties. Promise I won't hold it against you and have you banned from my thread... I need viewers badly... even ones that don't read my threads. Just say yes or no... and I can take criticism... EC has a thick skin. It would really be nice to have a little feedback... actually, I will rephrase that... I would like to have lots and lots of feedback.

Monday, July 10, 1951 NIRL 2ND STILL TIGHT, GIANTS AND OLDTIMERS WIN The Joliet Green Giants are still the top team in the North Island Second Division with the Avalon Oldtimers clinging close, just one game behind... both were victors Sunday... Joliet nudged out the last place Wafford Eagles 5-4... Avalon finally tamed the forth place Kinston Firebirds 9-2 in 10 innings... and third place Theodore took care of fifth place West Chester 5-2. Avalon still has a chance to force a playoff for the league crown... there is one game left to play. |

Saturday, July 14, 1951 NIRL FLAGS ON THE LINE SUNDAY The league titles in both NIRL divisions are still up for grabs... one way or another it will be over in the North Island First Division... Jackson and Dutton are tied for first place and will be playing each other Sunday afternoon at the Dutton Civic Stadium... it's a little bit more complex in the North Island Second Division... Joliet (15-4) has a game edge over second place Avalon (14-5)... the Oldtimers still could force a one-game playoff... but it's all over if the Green Giants whip the third place Theodore Bobcats (11-8) at Bobcat Field... Avalon has the easier assignment, they play on the road against the last place Wafford Eagles (4-15). The rest of the NIRL First Division slate shows last place Union Heights (4-15) at third place New Yerby (9-10) and third place Kofa (9-10) visiting fifth place Stockdale (7-12)… the NY Yankees and the Kofa Kings are still contesting for the bragging rights to third place. No big deal, but in the NIRL Second Division Kinston (7-12) and West Chester (6-13) will continue their battle for the fourth spot in the standings. |

Monday, July 16, 1951 DUTTON WINS 1ST DIVISION TITLE SHOWDOWN The Dutton Coyotes won the North Island First Division title in a face-to-face showdown with the Jackson Jackalopes... the clubs fought hard all season long and it came down to their last game of the season... Dutton dusted Jackson off 4-2 to take the title by one game. Rounding out the season as well were the league also-rans... Kofa got the third place spot with a 4-3 decision over fifth place Stockdale... and Union Heights dumped New Yerby down to fourth place with a 6-2 triumph... Stockdale and Union Heights will be relegated to the North Island Second Division next season. 1951 NIRL FIRST DIVISION FINAL STANDINGS Attachment 657826 Last edited by Eugene Church; 11-09-2019 at 08:17 PM. |
