![]() Sept. 19, 2015 New York 7, Louisville 3: The Heroes take the third game of this four-game set, as Bill Byrd (9-13, 4.10) - in what's easily his worst season - was strong after being staked to a 5-0 lead. Irish Meusel hit a two-run homer off Mickey Lolich (9-6, 4.50) in the first and Tony Perez added two more hits and drove in two. Charlotte 8, Boston 5: The Riders couldn't hold a 4-3 lead, as Tom Hume blew his fourth save of the year, allowing five runs in the top of the 9th. Adam Dunn deposited his 40th homer of the season into the bleachers in the 5th, a three-run shot. But Charlotte a three-run shot of their own, from Bobby Lowe (4), in the five-run comeback inning. Sacramento 7, Milwaukee 4: The scoreless inning streak is over, but Sacramento won their fourth straight and 7th of 9 as Gary Carter and Joel Youngblood each drove in two to support Dave Stewart (13-9, 4.03). Wichita 10, Philadelphia 5: Cleon Jones and Wally Pipp each homered in a 4-run fifth and Frank Chance drove in four more to give him a league-leading 106 RBI on the season as Rube Waddell (9-8, 4.86) went eight solid innings for the win, though the Brigade seem unsure how they want to use Waddell down the stretch here. Will be interesting to watch.

![]() Sept. 20, 2015 New York 5, Louisville 1: The Heroes take 3 of 4 in the series in breezy fashion - a game time of 2:08. Jack Taylor (12-10, 3.56) hurled a complete game two-hitter, and Buddy Kerr and Mike Jacobs each drove in a pair. Bill Hands' (8-17, 5.23) hideous September continues, but the Racers don't seem to believe they have anywhere else to turn. Boston 8, Charlotte 4: The Riders almost blew another big lead, letting a 5-0 lead turn into a 5-4 thriller. But Keith Hernandez and Harry Stovey homered to stretch the lead a bit, and Tommy John (12-10, 3.14) went the distance, his four runs allowed all unearned thanks to his own error as Boston takes three of four. Sacramento 4, Milwaukee 0: Five in a row and four shutouts in the last five games for the Stingers, who get a complete game four-hitter as Rube Marquard earns his 20th win of the season in stellar fashion. The Bangers are almost unfathomably bad, but will once again get the #1 draft pick. Rumblings have begun that Ken Macha will be ousted when the season is over. Wichita 9, Philadelphia 0: Jonas Gaines improved to 5-0, combining with Al Orth for the shutout. Cleon Jones, Donie Bush and Wally Pipp each drove in a pair. Russ Ford (16-13, 3.81) took the loss.
The week ahead sees Boston host Philadelphia for three before going to New York for a huge 4-game set. Louisville goes to Charlotte for three before hosting a brutal Milwaukee team for three. New York hosts Sacramento for three before the Boston series. Charlotte follows up the Louisville series by hosting Philly for four, the first seven games of a 10-game homestand. Sacramento hosts Chicago for three after the New York series, while Wichita hosts Charlotte and Indianapolis for their final seven home games of the season. |

![]() A source who didn't want to be named with the Chicago Hitmen has said the team has been notified Josh Hamilton plans to retire as a result of his shoulder injury. "It was a devastating injury," the source said, "and the recovery from surgery has been incredibly difficult. This wasn't a normal injury, and it sounds like Josh has just lost faith he can come back." The news, if true, not only ruins what should have been a great story that ended with Hamilton returning where he started. But it also places increasing urgency on Chicago to ramp up negotiations with Babe Ruth, who can become a free agent at season's end. "Ruth's people seem intent on his testing the waters," the source said. "Maybe this will make the talks heat up. We really can't afford to lose him." |

![]() Sept. 21, 2015 Philadelphia 10, Boston 0: CC Sabathia (12-14, 4.14), who has struggled after an excellent first two months, righted the ship in throwing a complete game 4-hitter. John Anderson hit his 23rd and 24th homers of the year and six Ringers starters had multihit games to beat Red Munger (13-7, 3.24). Sacramento 10, New York 4: New York got three in the first off Bob Veale (21-7, 2.44), but the Stingers answered with 10 unanswered runs off Harry Krause (11-10, 3.93) and Danny Darwin in storming back. Roy White and Jack Clark went back-to-back in the third and Gary Carter hit a grand slam in the fifth. Charlotte 3, Louisville 2: George Hall hit a 2-run shot in the 7th to knot the game at two and David Wright hit a two-out RBI double in the 8th as Charlotte rallied from behind to further tighten the logjam in the East. Rick Sutcliffe (16-7, 3.21) took the win, while Mickey Harris (11-14, 4.07) took the loss. Wichita 7, Chicago 2: Claude Hendrix (1-2, 4.56) went the distance, backed by three Jay Gibbons RBIs to beat Howie Pollet (8-16, 4.04) and keep pace with Sacramento.

![]() Sept. 22, 2015 Boston 8, Philadelphia 1: Chief Bender (10-18, 4.34) went the distance, allowing only five hits, and Adam Dunn hit his 42nd homer of the season as Boston cruised against Jay Hughes (11-16, 4.43). Every Boston starter had a hit. New York 6, Sacramento 3: Down 2-0, New York stormed back with 3 in the sixth and 3 in the seventh, with Buddy Kerr driving in four, to make a winner out of Frank Killen (16-9, 3.57). Bob Shawkey (13-8, 3.50) took the loss for the Stingers. Charlotte 5, Louisville 3: The Racers blow a late lead for the second straight day as Charlotte gets what proved to be a game-winning two-run double from Pat Putnam off Catfish Hunter (16-10, 3.68), who skipper Jimy Williams arguably left in too long. Hunter has now lost five straight starts, going 0-5 with a 6.08 ERA, and the Racers - who led the division three days ago - now sit in fourth. Chicago 9, Wichita 4: The Hitmen pounded out 16 hits, including three apiece from Milton Bradley and Garry Templeton - who drove in 3 and 2, respectively, and got 2 RBI from Babe Ruth - whose pending free agency has overtaken sports talk radio in the Windy City. Johan Santana (10-16, 4.70) got the win. Ricky Nolasco (16-9, 4.28) took the loss.

![]() Sept. 23, 2015 Boston 6, Philadelphia 2: Jim Palmer (15-8, 2.93) threw a complete game three-hitter and bided his time until the offense came through. Boston scored five in the eighth, the big blow a three-run homer from Hardy Richardson off loser Bill Doak (11-14, 5.03). Keith Hernandez had two hits including a two-run double. Sacramento 3, New York 0: At least for a day, Boston will have first place to itself, as Carlos Marmol (10-17, 3.05) hurled 8 2/3 shutout innings before Joe Benz came on to close it out, putting the Heroes a game back. Josh Beckett (10-9, 4.42) took the loss despite 8 strong innings. Charlotte 3, Louisville 1: After dropping 3 of 4 at Boston, Charlotte responds by sweeping the reeling Racers, who have now dropped five in a row and 12 of 13. Paul Hines' bases loaded triple in the fifth provided all the runs John Candelaria (16-9, 3.23) would need. Chicago 5, Wichita 1: Babe Ruth hit his 30th homer and Ben Sanders (18-13, 3.32) went the distance as Chicago knocked the Brigade 2 1/2 games back in their pursuit of Sacramento. Kid Nichols (5-5, 3.49), who had won his last three starts, took the loss.

![]() Sept. 24, 2015 Boston 10, New York 8: A pivotal three-game set opens up with a slugfest. After the Heroes jumped out to a 3-0 lead, Boston came back to tie it with Adam Dunn's 43rd homer of the season in the fourth. Willie Horton's RBI single in the fifth was answered by a three-run bottom of the fifth, including another homer from Dunn, his second two-run shot of the day. New York tied it in the top of the sixth on a Jim Rice homer, but Boston scored in the bottom of the 7th when Pedro Feliz singled home Brian Roberts. New York tied it again in the top of the 8th only to have Boston bang out four doubles in the three-run 8th to seal it. Charlotte 9, Philadelphia 5: George Hall and Pat Putnam each hit two-run homers in the fourth and a late-inning charge from Philadelphia fell short as the Cougars won their fourth straight and fifth of six. Ed Walsh (5-13, 4.64), making his first start since June, went the distance for Charlotte. Wichita 7, Indianapolis 1: Rube Waddell (10-8, 4.62) dug up some old magic and got support on homers from Cleon Jones and Donie Bush as Wichita picked up a half game on idle Sacramento.

![]() Sept. 25, 2015 Boston 7, New York 5: The Heroes put up a 3-spot in the top of the first. Then the Adam Dunn show continued. Dunn was the front half of back-to-back homers, with Hardy Richardson, in the first - then was the back half of back-to-back homers, with Keith Hernandez, in the third as Boston stormed back again to defeat New York. Dunn has back-to-back two-homer games and has hit five in his last four games, raising his totals to 46 homers and 115 RBI, both PBL bests. Charlotte 5, Philadelphia 4: The Cougars won their fifth straight, getting homers from Paul Hines, Hideki Matsui and George Hall and a walkoff RBI single from Joe Mauer in the bottom of the 9th off Russ Ford (16-14, 3.86). Ben Sheets (11-13, 5.10) won for Charlotte. Milwaukee 9, Louisville 0: The Racers' bats stay completely inept as Pete Redfern (16-11, 4.66) shuts them out on a four-hitter. Joe Crede hit two homers, giving him 22 on the year, and Max Alvis and Jonny Gomes homered as well for the Bangers as the Racers dropped their sixth straight. Louisville has not scored more than four runs in a game since Sept. 8 at Chicago, and has scored four only twice since then. Chicago 5, Sacramento 4: Garry Templeton drove in four and Babe Ruth hit his 31st homer as the Hitmen won their third straight as they play spoiler. Socks Seybold hit a three-run homer, his career-best 23rd, in the seventh off Len Barker (12-11, 4.10). Indianapolis 4, Wichita 2: Jonas Gaines (5-1, 4.71) gave up back-to-back homers to Les Nunamaker and Stan Musial in the first before settling in, but Wichita couldn't claw back against Ted Breitenstein (12-14, 4.44)and failed to pick up a game on the Stingers.
NOTE: New Orleans clinched the Southern League East with an 11-7 win over Los Angeles. Chad Tracy and Dwayne Murphy homered to back Dontrelle Willis (18-11, 3.40). Arizona's magic number is one in the West. |

![]() Sept. 26, 2015 New York 5, Boston 3 (11 innings): The Heroes bounce back with a big extra innings win, getting an RBI single from Willie Horton and a SAC Fly from Terry Kennedy against loser Dennis Martinez (3-5, 3.06). Bill Drake (8-7, 3.21) got the win with 3 1/3 innings of scoreless relief of Harry Krause. Brendan Donnelly picked up his 22nd save. Charlotte 7, Philadelphia 2: David Wright broke a scoreless tie in the 6th in big way, crushing a grand slam off CC Sabathia (12-15, 4.30) for his 14th homer of the season. That was all Jake Peavy (15-11, 4.65) needed as Charlotte rolled to its sixth straight win and surged into a tie for first. Louisville 6, Milwaukee 4: A desperate Racers team came up with a big 5-run 8th to for the victory. Rico Petrocelli hit a 2-run double to snap the tie, making a winner out of reliever Francisco Rodriguez (4-6, 2.88). Brad Lidge notched his 7th save, while Moose Haas (5-15, 5.02) took the loss. Sacramento 6, Chicago 5: The Stingers blew a three-run lead as Chicago tied it in the top of the 8th, but the decision to pinch run for Babe Ruth cost them as Ruth's slot came up in the 9th for the weak-hitting Dave Collins. Chicago was turned aside and Sacramento got a walkoff RBI single from Harry Walker to end it. Indianapolis 5, Wichita 2: Frank Chance's 4-for-4 day wasn't enough for Wichita, as Indianapolis put up three runs in the top of the 9th, including an RBI triple from Hanley Ramirez and a two-run double from Elmer Flick. Andy Coakley (17-11, 3.27) was the winner. Ricky Nolasco (16-10, 4.21) took the loss.
NOTE: The Arizona Sandmen clinched the Southern League West with a 5-4 win over Oklahoma City. Sam Thompson and Mike Hargrove homered for Arizona, which beat Walter Johnson (17-12, 3.78). Justin Verlander (16-12, 3.07) won it for Arizona. |

![]() Sept. 27, 2015 Boston 8, New York 3: Adam Dunn is determined to carry the Riders to the division crown. The slugger walloped two more homers, giving him three 2-homer games in the four-game series, seven homers in the last week, 14 on the month and 48 on the season. New York hit into four double plays and Chief Bender (11-18, 4.29) went the distance. Charlotte 8, Philadelphia 6: The Cougars jumped out to a 6-0 lead and held on to win their seventh straight game. George Hall had two hits, two walks and drove in four for the Cougars. Rick Sutcliffe won his 17th. Milwaukee 7, Louisville 5: The Racers suffered another excruciating loss, taking a 5-2 lead into the 9th only to watch Brad Lidge implode, allowing a hit and four walks to the five batters he faced in what would turn into a 5-run inning and a crushing defeat. Chicago 6, Sacramento 1: The Hitmen got a grand slam from Troy Tulowitzski and Howie Pollet (9-16, 3.93) beat Rube Marquard (20-7, 3.58). Wichita 9, Indianapolis 8: Wichita blew an 8-0 lead as Indianapolis hit five homers, including two from Stan Musial. But when all was done, George Davis scored on a wild pitch from Oscar Villareal, saving Wichita from what could have been a season-crushing defeat.

![]() Sept. 28, 2015 Boston 7, Louisville 2: The Riders hope to put the Racers out of the race as they kick off a 3-game set. Jim Palmer (16-8, 2.90) goes the distance, as Brian Roberts had three hits and scored twice. Keith Hernandez and Adam Dunn added a couple of hits apiece, while Harry Stovey broke it open with a three-run double in the 7th off loser Edinson Volquez (14-12, 4.84). Indianapolis 4, Charlotte 1: A 1-1 pitchers duel going into the 7th, Abner Dalrymple broke the tie with the last of his three doubles on the day and the Engines added two insurance runs off loser John Candelaria (16-10, 3.27). Hooks Wiltse (11-11, 3.38) earned the win, going the distance. New York 8, Philadelphia 5 (12 innings): Down 5-3 in the 8th, the Heroes knot it up in a rally started by Fielder Jones' leadoff triple. Taking it to extras, Tony Perez hit a 2-run pinch-hit single in the 12th to break the tie against Al Holland and Bill Drake shut it down. Sacramento 4, Wichita 3: The crucial 3-game set for the West starts in thrilling fashion, knotted at 2 before Socks Seybold hit a two-run shot, his 24th, off Kid Nichols (5-6, 3.58). Wichita got back-to-back doubles from Wally Pipp and Cherokee Davis off George Mullin to open the inning before Joe Benz came on to close it, leaving Davis stuck on third by getting RBI machine Frank Chance - who has 109 on the season - to ground to second to end it.

![]() Sept. 29, 2015 Boston 5, Louisville 3: Ten days removed from leading the division, Louisville is eliminated. The Racers fall to an unfathomable 6-20 on the month, this time stifled by Tommy John (14-10, 3.09), who allowed an unearned run over 7 2/3 innings. Pedro Feliz went 2-for-4 with a homer and 3 RBI. Bill Hands, who went 0-5 with a 7.02 ERA in September, lost his 18th for Louisville. The decision to keep running Hands out there, with a healthy Roy Oswalt in the bullpen, could cost Jimy Williams his job. Indianapolis 4, Charlotte 3: The Boston Riders get some breathing room as the Cougars go down again. Erik Bedard (13-12, 4.69) allowed three runs over 8 and Ferdie Schupp notched his 20th save for the Engines, which left Joe Mauer stranded as the tying run. New York 2, Philadelphia 1: The Heroes refuse to surrender the division title that's been theirs every year prior without a fight. Bill Byrd (10-13, 4.13) hurled the big game he's become noted for, even in this, his worst season ever. The Heroes led 2-0 after three, and Byrd was unyielding. Brendan Donnelly sawed off Reed Johnson for a tapper back to the mound with tying run Jimmy Ryan on third to end the save for his 23rd save. Sacramento 7, Wichita 4: Six different Sacramento players drove in runs as the Stingers got to Rube Waddell (10-9, 4.81), and in so doing put the Brigade four out with five to play. Bob Shawkey won his 14th for Sacramento, throwing zeros until Wichita rallied for four in the 7th.

![]() Sept. 30, 2015 Boston 8, Louisville 7: Harry Stovey and Pedro Feliz hit two-run homers and Jake Stahl added a three-run shot to beat a Louisville team that banged out 17 hits and somehow still managed to lose. Tom Hume saved his 30th, in relief of Al Spalding (8-12, 4.58). Indianapolis 2, Charlotte 0: Hank Wyse (7-6, 4.25) threw eight shutout innings and Ferdie Schupp picked up his 21st save as Jake Peavy's 7 innings of 1-run ball were wasted by a Cougars offense that mustered four runs in the three-game sweep. Philadelphia 5, New York 1: Jack Taylor (12-12, 3.87) cruised through five innings before the Ringers put up a four-spot in the sixth, led by Ian Kinsler's three-run homer. Wichita 9, Sacramento 4: The Brigade keep the dream alive, taking the final game of the series. Justin Morneau hit a three-run shot in the first to give the Stingers the lead, but Wichita rallied against Dave Stewart (13-10, 4.07). Frank Chance hit a three-run homer and Ken Griffey belted three doubles, driving in two.

![]() October 1, 2015 Chicago 4, Boston 0: Len Barker (13-11, 3.95) threw a 2-hitter, backed by Frank Baker's homer and a 3-hit performance from Roger Connor. Biz Mackey and Jose Cardenal also drove in runs for Chicago. New York 15, Charlotte 6: The Heroes stay alive, prolonging their season. The magic number for elimination is now one for either of these teams, who trail by three with three games left. With two more left in their series, someone's season ends tomorrow, and perhaps both. Harry Krause (12-10, 3.84) was backed by a 15-hit attack that saw Joe Morgan, Showboat Thomas, Buddy Kerr and Willie Horton each drive in three. Ben Sheets (11-14, 5.21) took the loss. Indianapolis 4, Sacramento 2: Bob Veale (21-8, 2.48) showed no ill effects from the shot off the wrist that knocked him from the game five days ago. But he still took the loss here as Andy Coakley won his 18th, helped by homers from Hanley Ramirez and Jimmy Wynn. Milwaukee 8, Wichita 5: Ricky Nolasco (16-11, 4.36) couldn't hold a 4-1 lead and Nick Johnson's three-run homer in the 8th proved the difference maker as Wichita blew a golden opportunity to make things a bit less comfortable for Sacramento. Now, they've lost a day.

![]() October 2, 2015 Chicago 10, Boston 2: Chief Bender (11-19, 4.53) was scalded for 8 runs over 3 1/3, and the Riders allowed the race to continue another day. Ed Delahanty had four hits, including his 14th homer, and Roger Connor hit his 18th for Chicago, backing Denny LeMaster (10-6, 3.36). Charlotte 5, New York 3: It's official...the Northern League East will have a new division champion for the first time in the PBLs 7-year history. After six straight division crowns, the New York Heroes were eliminated despite Fielder Jones' two homers. Rick Sutcliffe (18-7, 3.28) went the distance for Charlotte, which stayed alive as the only contender left with a chance to topple Boston. Indianapolis 4, Sacramento 0: Ted Breitenstein (13-14, 4.28) hurled a complete game 5-hitter for the Engines, and Abner Dalrymple's two-run first inning double off 20-game winner Rube Marquard provided all the support Indianapolis would need as Sacramento was left to sit by the champagne and wait to see if Wichita would lose in Milwaukee to give them the division crown. Wichita 8, Milwaukee 5: Up 5-1 in the bottom of the 7th, a Jack Lapp error opened the floodgates for a four-run rally by the Bangers, and Wichita's season hung in the balance. But the Brigade got three runs over the last two innings, the first coming after Lapp led off the 8th with a single, was sacrificed to second and scored on Mike Lamb's single.

![]() October 3, 2015 Chicago 3, Boston 2: The Riders fail to clinch on their own terms, as a pitcher's duel between Jim Palmer (16-9, 2.88) and Howie Pollet (10-16, 3.88) is knotted at 2 in the 7th until Biz Mackey leads off with a double, tags to third on a Milton Bradley fly out and scores on U.L. Washington's SAC Fly. Brandon Lyon saved his 22nd for Chicago. New York 10, Charlotte 3: The loss to Chicago didn't matter to Boston, though, as New York did the dirty work a day after their own elimination. Toby Hall's bases loaded triple broke open what was then a 5-3 game in 7th, and John Candelaria (16-11, 3.49) didn't have one more great start in him in this solid rookie season. Josh Beckett (11-9, 4.43) went the distance for New York, but it was Boston that celebrated as the first PBL expansion team to win a division crown. Sacramento 14, Indianapolis 6: With this, the playoff brackets are complete. The Stingers respond to the Engines' two-run first inning - on a two-run shot from Mike Easler - by rapping out 8 runs over the next three innings, getting three-run shots from Joel Youngblood and Garrett Atkins, who drove in five and four, respectively, on the day. Milwaukee 5, Wichita 1: Top overall pick John Montefusco (10-18, 4.39) closed out his rookie campaign with a complete game six-hitter. After battling control issues all season, Montefusco walked none in the effort, as Wichita seemed to deflate after word of Sacramento blowing their game open in Indianapolis, getting two hits over the final five innings, including being retired on 5 pitches in the 6th.
