Red Sox, Dodgers Strike Deal
Seeking a veteran second baseman, the Boston Red Sox acquired Billy Grabarkewitz from the Los Angeles Dodgers for minor leaguer Brian Downing early Tuesday morning.
Grabarkewitz, 27, is a career .247 hitter. However, his average tumbled to .201 for Los Angeles last season. Downing, 22, was Boston's first-round pick in last June's amateur draft. He was the 15th overall selection. Los Angeles most likely will start the catcher-left fielder in Triple-A. Last edited by Joy in Mudville; 05-20-2008 at 07:00 AM. |

Reds, Phillies Swap Pair
Maybe being named team Most Valuable Player doesn't mean a whole lot after all.
The Cincinnati Reds traded their MVPs from the past two years to the Philadelphia Phillies for a pair of players. Cincinnati dealt pitcher Pat Dobson and first baseman Lee May to Philadelphia for outfielder Willie Montanez and second baseman Tony Taylor. Dobson, 30, has won 20 games the past two years. The 1971 Reds' MVP was 20-16 with a 2.09 ERA this past season. He was acquired by Cincinnati for relief pitcher Pedro Borbon during the 1970 season. May, 29, batted .252 with 23 home runs and 84 RBIs en route to the '72 Reds' MVP award. Montanez, 24, hit .270 with 14 homers and 63 RBIs for the Phillies. He has won Gold Gloves the past two years. Taylor, 37, hit just. 217 with 13 stolen bases. He will likely compete with veteran Glenn Beckert for the starting job at second base. Last edited by Joy in Mudville; 05-20-2008 at 01:40 PM. |

Dodgers, Orioles Reach Trade Agreement
The Los Angeles Dodgers and Baltimore Orioles agreed on a trade Wednesday morning.
Los Angeles sent infielder Steve Garvey to Baltimore for veteran Davey Johnson and Merv Rettenmund. Garvey hit .290 with five home runs and 39 RBIs in his first full year as a starter. Though the 24-year-old played third base for the Dodgers, Garvey is expected to fill the hole at first base for the Orioles. Earlier this week, Baltimore dealt Dick Allen to Kansas City. Johnson will likely take over at second for Los Angeles. The 30-year-old hit .247 with 10 homers and 50 RBIs for Baltimore. Johnson was the Most Valuable Player of the American League Championship Series. Rettenmund, 29, batted .255 with four homers and 24 RBIs in a reserve role for the Orioles last season. Phillies Send Briggs to Milwaukee for Helms
The Philadelphia Phillies traded outfielder Johnny Briggs to the Milwaukee Brewers for second baseman Tommy Helms.
Briggs, 28, hit just .239 last season, however he hit 20 home runs and drove in 69 runs. Helms, 31, hit .248 with the Brewers. He hit one home run and knocked in 24. Originally a Cincinnati Red, this marks the second time Helms has been traded. The trade comes a day after Philadelphia shipped Willie Montanez and Tony Taylor to Cincinnati for Pat Dobson and Lee May. Last edited by Joy in Mudville; 05-21-2008 at 03:13 PM. |

Who Will Be the JIM's Ron Blomberg?
With Opening Day '73 fast approaching, the designated hitter era is about to begin.
The Joy in Mudville American League opening game features the New York Yankees (Brandon N.) at Fenway Park to take on the Boston Red Sox (Paul F.). In real life Yankee Ron Blomberg, one-time basketball recruit of John Wooden at UCLA, made history by being the first DH to step into the batter's box. Back then, gas was 40 cents a gallon. Today it costs 10 times that to fill up your tank. So the question remains unanswered as to which player will be the first DH in JIM League history. Speculation is running high, but new Yankee GM Brandon N. is mum at this time. The top candidates appear to be Tommy Harper or Danny Cater. Yet, neither is tipping his cap. So, no matter which player becomes the answer to a JIM trivia question, all AL GMs must decide who will take the role of DH for their teams. The decisions may help determine the pennant races. So, make like a DH. Have a seat and wait your turn. The time is approaching. Last edited by Joy in Mudville; 05-22-2008 at 01:52 PM. |

Rangers Reacquire Howard from Reds
The Texas Rangers reacquired veteran slugger Frank Howard from the Cincinnati Reds late Thursday evening.
Howard, 36, originally belonged to the Texas franchise which at that time played its games as the Washington Senators. Howard will likely fill the Rangers' need for a designated hitter. Howard is a career .247 hitter with 62 home runs and 193 RBIs. However, he is coming off a miserable season with the Reds in which he batted just .210 with six homers and 36 RBIs. Howard came to Cincinnati in an April 1971 trade that also sent pitcher Joe Coleman to the Reds. Both players helped Cincinnati win the 1971 Joy in Mudville World Series. Meanwhile, outfielder Roger Freed goes to the Reds in this year's deal. Freed, 26, is a two-time All-Star at the minor league level. Originally a member of the Baltimore organization, Freed has never had more than 18 at-bats in one big league season. He will likely compete for a reserve outfield role with the Reds. Rangers Continue to Deal as Season Opener Approaches
Dealer Dan just keep on dealing.
The wily Texas Rangers' GM continued his trading ways Friday by dealing outfielder Jay Johnstone to Kansas City for pitcher Geoff Zahn. Johnstone, 27, appeared in 76 games for Texas last season. The left-handed hitter batted .270 with two home runs and 17 RBIs in 111 at-bats. He will likely play a reserve role and provided a pinch-hitter for the Royals. Johnstone was originally a member of the California Angels prior to being acquired by the Washington Senators (the forerunner of the Texas Rangers). Zahn, 27, will begin the year at Triple-A Clay City but will likely find a spot in the Texas rotation in the future. The left-hander played collegiately at the University of Michigan. Cleveland, Milwaukee Swap 30-Year-Olds
With Opening Day just hours away, the Cleveland Indians and Milwaukee Brewers worked out a trade of 30-year-olds.
Cleveland sent minor league relief pitcher Steve Hargan to Milwaukee for second baseman Ted Kubiak. Hargan, a right-hander, has not pitched in the majors since 1970. He was a Triple-A All-Star in '71. Meanwhile, Kubiak hit just .200 with two home runs and 13 RBIs in 175 at-bats with the Brewers last season. American League East Preview '73
The following is the first in a four-part series previewing the 1973 Joy in Mudville season. It, in no way, attempts to predict the season outcome.
Baltimore Orioles This team won a Joy in Mudville record 114 games and swept Texas in the playoffs, yet it's the loss in game seven of the World Series that haunts this club. The O's rotation of Tom Seaver, Jon Matlack, Nolan Ryan and Ken Holtzman is the league's best. Yet, fans were shocked to see AL MVP Dick Allen traded to Kansas City for Gold Glove outfielder Amos Otis. Is a fourth straight East flag in the future? Boston Red Sox The Reds Sox are banking on offense and an aging pitching staff. Three consecutive third-place finishes have the Fenway faithful wanting more. The future looks bright with rising youngsters Carlton Fisk and Ron Cey joining veteran boppers George Scott, Reggie Smith and Carl Yastrzemski. Cleveland Indians The Tribe has yet to win more than 56 games in a season. Yet, there is hope for the near future. Former first-round pick J.R. Richard appears ready to anchor the staff. Third baseman Mike Schmidt's power numbers are on the rise. Oh yeah, Cleveland again has the No. 1 pick in the June amateur draft. Detroit Tigers The Tigers are a team in transition. Promising power hitter Dave Kingman and first-round draft choice Randy Jones will start the season with the big club. It appears others will follow as veterans Al Kaline, Mickey Lolich and Norm Cash continue to age. Milwaukee Brewers For the first time in JIM history the Brewers didn't lose 100 games. Okay, they still lost 99 but that was a 19-game improvement from 1971. Left-hander Mike Caldwell made strides that are encouraging. Dave Winfield is back. He is joined by former Philadelphia Phillie Johnny Briggs. New York Yankees Quick name the team that won 105 games and didn't even sniff the post-season. Yes, it's the Yankees. The pitching-rich Yankees will attempt to chase the Orioles down again. Batting champion Bobby Murcer is back along with Comeback Player of the Year Roy White. Fritz Peterson, Mel Stottlemyre, Steve Kline and Stan Bahnsen are solid. Editor's Note: The logo below represents the division champion for the past three seasons. American League West Preview '73
The following is the second in a four-part series previewing the 1973 Joy in Mudville season. It, in no way, attempts to predict the season outcome.
California Angels After two straight 79-win seasons, California slid to 77 victories a year ago. The Angels are looking for more run production to back its pitchers. Twenty-game winner Andy Messersmith was traded away leaving veteran Clyde Wright to anchor the staff. Leadoff man Mickey Rivers may hold the key to the offense. Chicago White Sox A year after contending for the division title, the Chisox tumbled from 95 victories and second place to 74 wins and fifth. An aging offense with Bill Melton and Mike Epstein needs to be upgraded. Pitchers Tommy John and Wilbur Wood still have a knack for baffling opposing hitters. Kansas City Royals The club is about to open its new ballpark with the addition of reigning AL MVP Dick Allen who was acquired in trade with Baltimore. The Royals are also counting on a comeback season from 1971 Cy Young Award winner Paul Splittorff. Minnesota Twins After hanging around in the pennant chase for half a season, the Twins are hungry to move onto bigger and better things. Right-hander Bert Blyleven quietly won 24 games last season. Second baseman Rod Carew impressed during a soid spring training. Oakland A's After averaging 104 wins in the JIM's first two seasons and nearly winning it all in '71, Oakland fell to just 87 victories last summer. The A's need more consistency from slugging outfielder Reggie Jackson and pitchers Catfish Hunter and Vida Blue. Second-year closer Rollie Fingers appears headed for All-Star status. Texas Rangers A year ago the Rangers moved to Texas, switched divisions and won the West flag going away. Since getting swept out of the playoffs, Texas has added three-time 20-game winner Andy Messersmith. While power-hitting third baseman Graig Nettles grabbed headlines last season, insiders say short stop Toby Harrah has taken giant strides and is about to emerge as a major force. National League East Preview '73
The following is the third in a four-part series previewing the 1973 Joy in Mudville season. It, in no way, attempts to predict the season outcome.
Chicago Cubs The North Siders have yet to experience a winning season, but a late-season surge propeled the Cubs to 79 wins and a third-place finish last year. Veteran pitchers Fergie Jenkins and Dave McNally anchor the staff that's counting heavily on younster Ross Grimsley. The offense needs more than just perennial All-Star Billy Williams. Montreal Expos The promise of 1971 turned into the bitter disappointment of a last-place finish of '72. Right-hander Rick Reuschel won 23 games and sported a 1.84 ERA. However, the rest of Le Expos were more like Pepe Le Pew. New York Mets The Big Apple thrilled to the first half of last season as the Mets were contenders. However, a second-half slide sent the New Yorkers back to fourth place. Boog Powell and Mike Cuellar bounced back with strong seasons after disappointments in '71. Promising youngster Rick Miller joins his ex-Baltimore teammates with hopes of adding to the offense. Philadelphia Phillies The Fightin' Phils finished a distant second to their Pennsylvania counterparts. This time around Philadelphia becomes the first team to go with a five-man rotation. Anchoring the arms is right-hander Barry Lersch who has won 26 games in each of the past two years. Former Cincinnati star Pat Dobson also joins the fold. Pittsburgh Pirates If not for a loss in a special one-game playoff following the 1971 regular season, the Pirates would be gunning for a fourth straight East flag. As it is, Pittsburgh has averaged 95 wins and won two titles. League MVP Willie Stargell and Cy Young winner Dock Ellis return for this star-studded team. St. Louis Cardinals The wheels fell off the Cardinal wagon a season ago. Just one year removed from 93 wins and a division championship, St. Louis fell with a thud. As age appeared to catch up with the team, the Cardinals won 18 fewer games and dropped to fifth place. Without much help from a poor minor league system, St. Louis needs its veterans to bounce back. National League West Preview '73
The following is the fourth in a four-part series previewing the 1973 Joy in Mudville season. It, in no way, attempts to predict the season outcome.
Atlanta Braves Rumors continue to swirl that veteran Hank Aaron is on the verge of retirement. Despite a strong comeback season a year ago, Hammerin' Hank has been plagued by back and leg ailments. Meanwhile, Rico Carty, Ralph Garr and John Milner all suffered through disappointing years at the plate. Pitchers Phil Niekro and Jim Palmer are solid; George Stone and Ron Reed are not. Cincinnati Reds After winning the JIM World Series in '71, the Big Red Machine needs to replace some worn out parts. Gone is 20-game winner Pat Dobson and plodding veteran Frank Howard. In are former Philadelphia Phillies Willie Montanez and Tony Taylor. Batting champ Pete Rose and Rookie of the Year Ken Griffey are back, but catcher Johnny Bench needs to return to championship form. Houston Astros Everything went right for the Astros in '72. Houston improved its record by 22 games and wound up defeating Baltimore in a seven-game JIM World Series. However, scouts watching spring training note the pitching has dropped off considerably this year. Meanwhile, the Astro offense boasts Joe Morgan, Jimmy Wynn, Cesar Cedeno and John Mayberry. Los Angeles Dodgers In an attempt to recapture the glory of a 1970 playoff trip, LA has added former Baltimore Orioles Davey Johnson and Merv Rettenmund to the fold. All-Star Willie Davis is back, and Bill Russell has replaced the retired Maury Wills at short. Time may be running out on 38-year-old Roberto Clemente. San Diego Padres The Padres have shown improvement in each of the first three years of the JIM. Youngsters George Hendrick, Ken Reitz and Dwight Evans all figure to get more time. Former first-round pick George Brett will start the year in Triple-A but may see action sooner than expected. San Francisco Giants New ownership wants to see something other than a third straight fifth-place finish. Promising Jim Barr joins veterans Gaylord Perry and Juan Marichal in the rotation. The offense centers on Bobby Bonds, Willie McCovey and Ken Henderson. Editor's Note: The logos below represent the division champion for the past three seasons. Conigliaro Makes JIM History as First League DH
Boston's Tony Conigliaro became the first player to bat as a designated hitter in Joy in Mudville history in Friday's season opener at Fenway Park.
After the visiting New York Yankees went down in order in the top of the first inning, Conigliaro stepped into the box as Boston's No. 2 hitter. Interestingly, the Revere, Massachusetts native followed his brother Billy who was the Red Sox leadoff man. Conigliaro grounded weakly back to Yankee starter Mel Stottlemyre in his first at-bat. He finished the game 1-for-7 with a run scored in Boston's 3-2 win in 14 innings. Yankee DH Pete Ward went 1-for-5 in his debut. Opening Day Notes: Cedeno Hits for Cycle
Opening Day 1973 brought a number of thrillls to Joy in Mudville League fans.
In the traditional opener in Cincinnati, the Reds pounded San Francisco 9-3 behind home runs by Tony Perez and Pete Rose. Meanwhile, in Atlanta the defending JIM champion Houston Astros set a league record by shellacking the Braves 21-2. Center fielder Cesar Cedeno collected five hits and hit for the cycle. Pittsburgh right-hander and last season's Cy Young Award winner Dock Ellis tossed a four-hitter as the Pirates downed St. Louis 5-1. Los Angeles rookie catcher Joe Ferguson homered and right-hander Bill Singer held San Diego to three hits as the Dodgers trimmed the Padres 1-0. Oakland's Catfish Hunter outdueled Minnesota's Bert Blyleven 1-0. Reigning American League MVP Dick Allen made his Kansas City debut with a hit and an RBI but the California Angels dropped the Royals 4-2. Texas cranked out 19 hits in a 12-7 thumping of Chicago. Graig Nettles went 4-for-4 and Rusty Staub had three hits and home run for the Rangers. Newcomers Steve Garvey and Amos Otis each drove home two runs as Baltimore drilled Milwaukee 6-1. |

JIM Division Leaders Familiar to Fans
All four playoff teams from last season hold down first place in their respective divisions as the 1973 Joy in Mudville League concluded its first month.
Baltimore, winners of 10 straight games, lead the American League East with an 18-2 record. Texas, fresh off a sweep of Minnesota, stands atop the AL West at 14-6. Pittsburgh, two-time National League East champions, hold the top spot in its division with a 15-5 mark. Thanks for a 12-game winning streak, Houston has surged ahead of Cincinnati in the NL West. The Astros (18-6) leads the Reds (16-6) by one game. Diamond JIM Notes: Texas catcher Darrell Porter won the AL Player of the Month Award while Baltimore left-hander Ken Holtzman took home the AL Pitcher of the Month honors. Detroit first baseman Dave Kingman swatted his way to the AL Rookie award . . . Cincinnati's Pete Rose was honored as the NL's Player of the Month; Reds' teammate Gary Nolan grabbed the pitching award. Houston catcher Steve Yeager won the NL Rookie plaque . . . St. Louis left-hander Steve Carlton one-hit Los Angeles April 25 in a 5-0 Cardinal victory. Dodger first baseman Wes Parker had the lone LA hit, a fifth-inning single . . . Montreal's Mack Jones and Houston's Cesar Cedeno each had five-hit games.
