Agreed. I just wouldn't take Millwood over the handful of other quality starters out there.

Brewer Fan Here

Howdy, I've read through this read and can maybe add a little perspective to this for White Sox fans.

First, anybody who actually thought Overbay or Sheets would be involved before this went down was obviously dreaming Peter Gammons and other Red Sox fans are getting boners over thinking Sheets will be traded to the Red Sox. Sorry, just not happening. Remember, Bud Selig sold the Crew and hopefully that will end our reputation of being a AAA team in the majors. Sheets isn't going anywhere. He'll be a free agent after 2006, not 2005.

Anyway, back to the guys the White Sox got:

Scotty Po was a fan favorite here after he burst onto the scene in 2003. What a year that was for Scotty. In 2004 he just couldn't seem to get it going. I really don't think I can buy the fact that he's going to go back to his 2003 ways. Numerous times throughout the season he was telling the broadcasters that he was getting trying to get back to his style of play in 2003. But then he'd hit a homer and think he was Barry Bonds again. Based on his career minor league numbers which I don't have handy, and his major league numbers I'm guessing he'll perform somewhere in between 2003 and 2004. His secondary numbers in 2004 suggest he just didn't get as many hits which may or may not be attributed to luck. In 2003 he was lucky, 2004 unlucky. My guess is he'll be somewhere in between. Throw in his speed factor and he'll be a decent hitter.

Fielding wise he is mediocre. This from observation and as somebody else pointed out, statwise he is not great. He has absolutely no arm. If there was a single to center with a guy on 2nd it was about 99% chance the guy on 2nd would score. Anyway I've always thought his fielding was a liability.

Vizcaino is a solid setup man. A little erratic. If his slider is working he's filthy. His poor numbers in 2003 came from a loss in velocity. He was throwing around 89 mph but last year was back to his old self. He's still a little erratic but nonetheless a solid reliever.

The name I'm hearing most often is Mitch Stetter.

2003 Helena (R) 6-2 3.99 ERAwith 63 K 12 BBin 54 IP
2004 Beloit (A) 4-0 1.70 ERA 57 K 12 BBin 53 IP
2004 High Desert (A+) 1-4 8.25 ERA 29 K 14 BB in 38.2 IP

Take his High Desert numbers with a grain of salt. That place has been absolutely brutal to pitching. He worked mainly out of the bullpen in Beloit in 24 appearances although he made three starts. At High Desert he had 8 appearances in seven starts.

Here's his scounting report from brewerfan.net (not sure where they compile them from):
Nice sized lefty with pretty good stuff. I'll let his college coach Tom Warn do the rest of the talking: "An outstanding young man and a great talent. Throws four pitches for strikes, rarely ever gets hit. Opponents have a .198 batting average against him. Pitched in a limited number of games all in relief this past season due to back injury. Is fine now. He was freshman all-american his first year of school. 6'4" frame with potential to get even stronger weighing only 200 lbs. Has a great upside for the Brewers.

Given the Sox history and incredible lack of depth at SP, Stetter will probably be the #5 guy by August...

The Sox have also inked Timo Perez to a 1-year, $1 million contract.

Come on, Timo! Come on, Timo! Come on, Timo!

And in more news that is sure to put the White Sox over the top, the blue seats at U.S. Cellular will officially be replaced by green seats. Everybody knows that 15-20,000 empty forest green seats will look better on TV...

dola,

The Sox have re-signed Ben Davis to a 1-year, $1 million contract.

Oh, well. At least he costs less than he did last year.

I don't think this is a bad deal by any means. Sure, there are upgrades to Davis... but if he produces like he showed he could then he'll be worth the $1 million.

At least they didn't give Schoeneweis $2+ million.

More proof that KW is a moron: He rushed and overpaid for Jermaine Dye. Dustan Mohr is now available and is a better player. But they won't get him because they've got no room on the roster. Maybe he could not have expected Mohr to be available, but still, it's Jermaine freaking Dye.

From what I've heard, the Sox are no longer interested. I read a quote from KW that the Sox never offered him a contract, and determined that he wouldn't be a good fit.

The Sox have offered a contract to Orlando Hernandez, according to the Chicago Tribune:

Quote:
Sources said the Sox had offered a guaranteed two-year contract heavily laden with incentives, believed to be worth as much as $4 million, although the deal had not been finalized.
All the Sox need to do now is lure Scott Brosius out of retirement...

I don't like their chances right now, even if they do go after Eck. You still have problems at 3B, 1B/DH and C. You still need a 5th, and Hernandez isn't going to get it done.

2 years, $8 million - up to $12 million with incentives.

Sorry to see El Duque go. He always seemed to know when to turn it up a notch and win that important game for the Yanks.

Not a bad deal considering the other signings this year.

This is hilarious.

The Sox have two #2 starters and three #5 starters. Their bullpen is much worse than in the past. Their offense has gone to hell.

Can the Royals force the White Sox into a 5th place finish?

What's that, a mil for each start he'll give them?
