New York clinched the AL pennant early in September. It was the first in the franchise's history. The NL battle, however, went down to the wire. Going into the last week of the season, Chicago and St. Louis were tied for first with Philadelphia only 1 game behind. The Cubs and Phillies played each other to begin the final week, and the Phillies won 2-of-3. Meanwhile, the last-place Pittsburgh Pirates tried to play spoiler by winning 2-of-3 from St. Louis. With one series remaining for each team, they were now in a 3-way tie for first.

The Cubs had to play the tough Boston Beaneaters, St. Louis drew equally tough Cincinnati and the Phillies played the lowly New York Giants. Obviously, Philadelphia had the edge. All three teams won their first games. They were all pitching duels, and only the Phillies won by more than 2 runs. On the next day, amazingly, all three teams lost. Again they were all pitching duels with each game decided by no more than 2 runs.

On the final and deciding day of the season, both Chicago and St. Louis, who had the toughest matchups, won their games, but heavily-favored Philadelphia were beaten by the Giants. This forced a one-game playoff between the Cubs and Cardinals. St. Louis hosted the game, but the Cubs scored 6 late runs and came away with a 7-3 victory and their first NL pennant.

NOTE: Pittsburgh's star rightfielder Scott Podlasek became the first player in league history to hit for the cycle, hitting a single, double, triple and home run on the same day. He did it on Sept. 22 against Brooklyn.

World Series

The New York Highlanders were heavily favored to win the league's 2nd World Series. They have the best pitching staff in baseball and one of the best offenses too. They also benefitted from an extra day off thanks to the Chicago-St. Louis play off game. Chicago, while they've been hot lately, may be outclassed in this series. They have above average pitching and hitting, but they may not be able to withstand New York's talent.

Prediction: New York wins in 5 games (This is a best-of-7).

Chicago 3 - New York 1: Both teams played an excellent game, and the Cubs shocked everyone by coming out on top. The game featured each team's top pitchers - "Evil" Archer of the Cubs and the Highlanders' "Johnny Cakes" Sutton. The game was scoreless until New York poked a run in the bottom of the 8th. The Cubs tied the game with a sac fly in the 9th. The game went into the 13th inning when Chicago scattered a few hits and drove in 2 runs for the victory. Both pitchers threw 13-inning complete games, but it was Archer who got the win.

Chicago 5 - New York 2: Cubs starter Bowie Castellon had an excellent day, and the Cubs offense scored 5 runs, shocking the hometown Highlanders and their fans with a 2-0 series lead.

New York 6 - Chicago 2: Both teams took a 2-2 tie into the 10th, when New York scored 4 runs for their first series win.

NOTE: Chief Netsky started Game 3. He allowed 2 runs on 5 hits and 4 walks in 7 innings, but got a no-decision.

New York 3 - Chicago 2: Archer and Sutton returned to the mound for this game, and again it went extra innings. However, Sutton had to leave the game in the 4th with shoulder pain. He is expected to miss the rest of the series. While losing Sutton was a huge setback, the Highlanders did win the game and even the series at 2-2.

New York 6 - Chicago 3: Castellon pitched another superb complete game to give the Cubs a 3-2 series edge.

Chicago 7 - New York 3: The Cubs completed the upset by beating Netsky, who allowed 5 runs on 8 hits and 5 walks in just 6 innings.

Bowie Castellon was named World Series MVP. He was 2-0 with a 1.50 ERA in 2 WS starts.

Whiskey Allen is on several career leaderboards, namely batting average where he is tied with the Phillies' "Dark Horse" Allen with a .346 clip... I wonder if these two are related

The surprising World Series champion Chicago Cubs look to defend their NL pennant, but it will be tough. Last season, several teams had their eye on the pennant, and the Cubs didn't win until they beat St. Louis in a one-game playoff. The Cardinals will be out for validation. The Philadelphia Phillies, who finished just 1.5 games out of first, hope to regain the pennant, which they had a stranglehold on until 1904 when Boston usurped them. Boston and even Cincinnati look to be in the hunt once again. The Beaneaters lost their ace John Celaya for most of last season with shoulder problems. He should be ready to play some time in early April, but it is becoming obvious to the team that he may never regain his POTY form of 1904. The Cubs are the early favorites to repeat, but many experts are giving the nod to Cincinnati, who led the NL for much of last season before fading down the stretch.

The New York Highlanders are poised to repeat in the AL. They dominated the league last season, and with the development of several young pitchers, they may do so again in 1906. However, the American League looks to be incredibly competitive this season. Detroit has hopes of winning their first pennant after finishing in 2nd Place in each of the past four seasons. Washington and Philadelphia should get in the mix, and either could be a surprise team. St. Louis and even Cleveland have enough talent to also make a run.

Ancestors Added

Campbell Ditty, CF, New York Giants

Campbell is a very good hitter with power to boot. He signed with the New York Giants, who have yet to have their first winning season. That won't happen this season either, but Campbell (and other young up-and-coming stars) may turn the franchise around in a few years. Ditty is projected to platoon with incumbent centerfielder Bill Prugh. Ditty does not turn 18 until September, but he could be ready by next season for 500+ at-bats.

Btw, Whiskey won his first player of the month award for September 1905... I just didn't post it because with the pennant race & world series, I didn't notice who had won

It's a great time to be a baseball fan in St. Louis. Both the Browns and Cardinals lead their respective leagues after the first month of the season. Cleveland is trying to rebound from a horrendous 1905 season, and they are tied for second with Washington. Defending AL champion New York started off slow, but they have rebounded and are now in 4th Place, only 3 games out. Detroit had a forgettable first month. They have baseball's worst record at 7-17.

The Cardinals lost a one-game playoff to the Cubs for last season's NL pennant. They are out to win it this year, and they started off well. Boston and Chicago are in 2nd and 3rd Place respectively. Both have solid teams who should be contenders all season. Pittsburgh surprisingly led the NL for the first few weeks, but they have slipped to 4th. Meanwhile, the Phillies and Reds were expected to be very competitive this season, but both have started slowly.

Batters of the Month:

AL - Tee Carver, RF, Cleveland Broncos - He hit .374 with 19 RBI and 13 runs scored.

NL - Jason Tedford, 2B, Chicago Cubs - He hit .398 with 18 RBI and 15 runs scored.

Pitchers of the Month:

AL - Paul Rieker, St. Louis Browns - He was 4-1 with a 2.04 ERA.

NL - "Honker" Zauder, Boston Beaneaters - He was 5-0 with a 1.13 ERA. Unfortunately for Boston, Zauder was hurt in his last outing, and he will likely miss the entire month of May. This is a major blow for the Beaneaters.

American League Standings

St. Louis (A) 16 8 .667 -
Cleveland 14 10 .583 2.0
Washington 14 10 .583 2.0
New York (A) 13 11 .542 3.0
Boston (A) 11 13 .458 5.0
Philadelphia (A) 11 13 .458 5.0
Chicago (A) 10 14 .417 6.0
Detroit 7 17 .292 9.0

National League Standings

St. Louis (N) 16 8 .667 -
Boston (N) 15 10 .600 1.5
Chicago (N) 14 11 .560 2.5
Pittsburgh 13 11 .542 3.0
Brooklyn 12 13 .480 4.5
Philadelphia (N) 10 15 .400 6.5
Cincinnati 9 15 .375 7.0
New York (N) 9 15 .375 7.0

Ancestors:

Whiskey Allen, C, Cleveland - Whiskey hit .390 with 11 RBI and 15 runs as Cleveland reasserted themselves as contenders. He is 2nd in the AL batting race, just 1 point back.

Heinrich Kahle, 1B, Cincinnati - Kahle started the season off the bench, and he started slowly. He hit just .115 (3 for 26) with 1 RBI and 2 runs scored.

Chief Netsky, SP, New York (A) - Chief was 1-3 with a 7.08 ERA in April. The big news, however, was the fact that New York traded Netsky and fellow young pitcher Kieran Noah to Cleveland on April 27th for hard-hitting second baseman Jeff Young. Chief was immediately inserted as Cleveland's #2 starter. He joins two other young, great pitchers (both 5-star prospects) on Cleveland's staff - "Greasy" Holloway and "Blue" Luxford.

Campbell Ditty, CF, New York (N) - Ditty hit .333 (4 for 12) in limited play. Surprisingly, he was inserted into each game at catcher and has yet to play in the outfield this season. He's a natural outfielder and can play center, left and right, but he also knows how to catch. Although the Giants are carrying two catchers, they like Ditty as their main backup for now.

At one point this month, five AL teams were within a single game of first place. As expected, this has been a tight race. The Athletics came out smoking with a 17-9 record. They have one of the best offenses in league history. They currently lead all of baseball in every major offensive category. They have very good pitching to boot, led by Stuart Cutts, who is 9-1 with a 2.72 ERA. Cleveland has remained tied for first, but were just 15-13 in May.

Chicago went 17-10 in May, which put them into first place in the NL. Philadelphia dipped to last place early in the month, but they are now in 4th. Brooklyn has been surprisingly good so far, as well.

Batters of the Month:

AL - Shay Bartling, 1B, Detroit Tigers - He hit .371 with 14 RBI and 13 runs scored.

NL - Scott Podlasek, RF, Pittsburgh Pirates - He hit .392 with 15 RBI and 17 runs scored.

Pitchers of the Month:

AL - "Johnny Cakes" Sutton, New York Highlanders - He was 6-1 with a 1.43 ERA.

NL - Albert Scharf, Philadelphia Phillies - He was 6-1 with a 1.57 ERA.

New York (N) 21 30 .412 9.5

Chief Netsky, SP, Cleveland - Chief was 2-4 with a 4.24 ERA with his new team.

Heinrich Kahle, 1B, Cincinnati - The German hit .257 (9 for 35) with 5 runs scored.

Philadelphia maintained their lead in the AL after going 18-9 in June. Cleveland lost the league's leading hitter Whiskey Allen with a torn achilles tendon in his leg. He's expected to miss nearly two months. Without him, Cleveland has tanked.

Chicago struggled at 14-13 this month, but they managed to increase their lead in the NL. Brooklyn and St. Louis are still close behind, but neither had an impressive month.

Batters of the Month:

AL - Michael Hewitson, SS, Detroit Tigers - He hit .398 with 16 RBI and 21 runs scored.

NL - "Dark Horse" Allen, CF, Philadelphia Phillies - He hit .436 with 24 RBI and 19 runs scored.

Pitchers of the Month:

AL - "Green Toe" Gillespie, Boston Pilgrims - He was 5-1 with a 1.99 ERA.

NL - Sam Covallini, Pittsburgh Pirates - He was 4-2 with a 1.87 ERA.

American League Standings

Philadelphia (A) 46 31 .597 -
Boston (A) 41 36 .532 5.0
Washington 42 38 .525 5.5
New York (A) 40 38 .513 6.5
St. Louis (A) 40 38 .513 6.5
Cleveland 39 39 .500 7.5
Chicago (A) 36 44 .450 11.5
Detroit 29 49 .372 17.5

National League Standings

Chicago (N) 45 34 .570 -
Brooklyn 42 37 .532 3.0
St. Louis (N) 41 37 .526 3.5
Philadelphia (N) 40 39 .506 5.0
Boston (N) 40 40 .500 5.5
Pittsburgh 39 40 .494 6.0
New York (N) 36 43 .456 9.0
Cincinnati 33 46 .418 12.0

Ancestors:

Whiskey Allen, C, Cleveland - Whiskey tore his achilles tendon while running the bases on June 4th. He missed the rest of the month and probably won't be back until early August. Question is, will there even be pennant hopes remaining for Cleveland when he gets back?

Chief Netsky, SP, Cleveland - Chief was 2-3 with a 4.33 ERA. He still struggles at time, but coaches like his mechanics and they claim he is improving.

Heinrich Kahle, 1B, Cincinnati - The German hit .194 (6 for 31) with 2 RBI and 3 runs scored. He still hasn't earned an everyday spot.

Campbell Ditty, CF, New York (N) - Ditty hit .242 (8 for 33) with 6 RBI and 3 runs scored. On June 6th, he hit his first career homerun against Brooklyn.

Both pennant races have heated up. In the AL, 5 teams are within 4 games of first, and in the NL, 5 teams are within 5.5 games of the lead. The Highlanders pushed into first in the AL with an 18-9 record in July. Cleveland managed to rebound even without Whiskey Allen. They went 16-10 on the month and are now just 2.5 games back with Allen due to return on August 6th. Along the way, they lost starting pitcher Chief Netsky to a severe back problem.

The Cardinals had an impressive month until losing 6 of their last 8. They are still just 1 game behind the Cubs, who have continued to play mediocre ball.

Batters of the Month:

AL - Scott Patel, LF, New York Highlanders - He hit .341 with 23 RBI and 9 runs scored.

NL - Bryan Henderson, 1B, Boston Beaneaters - He hit .438 with 23 RBI and 13 runs scored.

Pitchers of the Month:

AL - "Shepard" McBean, Washington Senators - He was 5-2 with an 0.99 ERA.

NL - Jason Welch, Chicago Cubs - He was 3-0 with a 1.00 ERA.

American League Standings

New York (A) 58 47 .552 -

St. Louis (A) 54 49 .524 3.0
Washington 54 51 .514 4.0
Boston (A) 50 52 .490 6.5
Chicago (A) 45 60 .429 13.0
Detroit 43 60 .417 14.0

National League Standings

Chicago (N) 58 46 .558 -
St. Louis (N) 57 47 .548 1.0
Boston (N) 55 49 .529 3.0
Philadelphia (N) 54 50 .519 4.0
Brooklyn 52 51 .505 5.5
Pittsburgh 50 53 .485 7.5
New York (N) 45 59 .433 13.0
Cincinnati 44 60 .423 14.0

Ancestors:

Whiskey Allen, C, Cleveland - Whiskey should be back on August 6th. In his place, 36-yr-old backup John Peters hit .261 with 9 RBI in July.

Chief Netsky, SP, Cleveland - A huge blow, Chief suffered a torn back muscle that will force him to put an end to his career. At age 20, Chief's career numbers were 19-24 with a 4.70 ERA in 54 starts. His career will likely not be remembered statistically, but those who knew him will always wonder, what if?

Heinrich Kahle, 1B, Cincinnati - The German hit .429 (12 for 28) with 2 RBI and 3 runs scored.

Campbell Ditty, CF, New York (N) - Ditty hit .292 (7 for 24) with 2 RBI and 2 runs scored.

them's the breaks... or strains... or ruptures... or tears... there's a limit of 3 players per generation with the same last name, so that gives you plenty of opportunities to get your ancestors involved, especially when you have separate sides of the family with different last names

Both second place teams, the Philadelphia Athletics and St. Louis Cardinals rattled off long winning streaks to take over their respective leagues this month. The A's won 10 in a row, while the Cards won 9 straight. This has been a rare season when there are hot pennant races this late in both leagues.

The New York Highlanders were 17-11 in August and they still fell into second place. The red-hot A's were 21-7. In the NL, Chicago had another mediocre month, and it finally caught up to them. St. Louis whizzed past in the standings, and Boston's 19-10 record put them in 2nd ahead of the Cubs. With only about 3 weeks left in the season, this looks to go down to the wire.

Batters of the Month:

AL - Donny Engel, SS, Philadelphia Athletics - He hit .377 with 16 RBI and 23 runs scored.

NL - Bryan Henderson, 1B, Boston Beaneaters - it's been several years since someone won back-to-back BOTM awards. Henderson did it by hitting .395 with 20 RBI and 16 runs scored in August.

Pitchers of the Month:

AL - Greg Heiderich, Philadelphia Athletics - He was 6-1 with a 1.25 ERA.

NL - David Smith, St. Louis Cardinals - He was 6-1 with a 1.57 ERA.

Heinrich Kahle, 1B, Cincinnati - Kahle hit .111 (4 for 36).

Campbell Ditty, CF, New York (N) - Ditty hit .333 (17 for 51) with 7 RBI and 6 runs scored. He had 51 at-bats this month, his highest total yet. Both pennant races went down to the wire this season. The St. Louis Cardinals clinched the NL pennant on September 22nd when they beat the Giants 4-2. They swept New York to finish off the season with a 90-64 record and the franchise's first pennant. The Boston Beaneaters made a valiant effort, but were swept by Brooklyn in the next-to-last series of the season.

The Philadelphia Athletics won their first AL pennant on September 23rd by beating Cleveland 4-2. They had a late scare, being swept by the White Sox before sweeping Cleveland to end the season. The 3 losses to Chicago allowed New York to get to within 1 game of the lead, but the Highlanders lost their last two games of the season to Washington.

Cincinnati 59 95 .383 31.0

World Series

This looks like it will be a very even matchup, and could be the first World Series to go a full seven games. Philadelphia has the more balanced attack. Their offense is led by first baseman Ricky "Bird Legs" Childerhose (.326, 6 HR, 87 RBI), shortstop Donny Engel (.306, 54 RBI, 60 SB), and centerfielder Terrence Bakula (.305, 3 HR, 61 RBI, 43 SB). Their defense is solid, and they have 4 good starters to choose from. Their top starter is Greg Heiderich (19-19, 2.55), but the rest of the rotation is good too.

The Cardinals are powered by one of the best offenses in either league. They're led by the amazing 24-year-old second baseman "Woody" Woodson, who set a new standard with an incredible .390 batting average this season, not to mention 101 runs scored. They also have young catcher "Butterball" Klehammer, who hit .331 with 9 HR and a new major league record 98 RBI. Their rotation is not quite as good as Philadelphia's, but they have a true ace in Dave Smith (26-11, 2.90). They also have 23-year-old Bradley Stevenson, who didn't became part of the rotation until July 29th, but posted a 7-1 record with a 1.95 ERA in 9 starts.

Both teams have played amazingly well on the road, so don't expect either team to have a home field advantage. Philadelphia was 51-26 on the road, and just 38-39 at home, while St. Louis was 50-27 away and 40-37 at home.

Prediction: Philadelphia's pitching is better, and their offense is almost as good as the Cardinals'. Philadelphia wins in 7 games.

Philadelphia 7 - St. Louis 6: This was an amazing game. Dave Smith pitched incredibly for the Cardinals through 6 innings, but with a 4-1 lead, he allowed 2 runs in the top of the 7th and the tying run in the 8th. The Athletics went on to score 3 runs in the 9th to take a 7-3 lead, but in the bottom of the 9th, Woody Woodson hit a 2-out triple with a runner on first to close the gap to 7-4. "Butterball" Klehammer drove him in with a single, but George Heiderich got rightfielder Steve Brickle to fly out to end the game.

Philadelphia 10 - St. Louis 5: This was another offensive game. The Athletics hammered Cardinals' starter Greg Prunty for 10 runs on 13 hits and 3 walks. The Cardinals got the score as close as 7-4 after 8 innings, but the A's scored another 3 runs in the 9th to put it away.

St. Louis 0 - Philadelphia 6: This was a matchup of two great young pitchers, "Brickhead" Horton of the A's and Bradley Stevenson of the Cardinals. It was Horton's day, as he pitched a complete-game shutout of St. Louis' awesome offense. He allowed only 8 hits and 1 walk. He held Woodson (previously 6-for-8) to 1-for-4, and he didn't allow a single extra base hit all day.

St. Louis 6 - Philadelphia 4: This time around, Smith won his matchup with Heiderich. Both pitchers were touched up by the opposition, but Smith and the Cardinals came away with the much needed victory, avoiding a World Series sweep. With the score 6-3 in the bottom of the ninth, second baseman Steve Collar hit a 2-out triple to score a runner from second. The ever-dangerous "Bird Legs" Childerhose then hit a screamer toward centerfield that was caught on an amazing diving play by Cardinals shortstop Janton Hoffman for the final out.

St. Louis 2 - Philadelphia 5: In a rematch of Game 2 starters, Bosco Erlewine got his second victory, this time holding St. Louis to 2 runs on 7 hits and 2 walks.

Bosco Erlewine was named World Series MVP. In a series that was dominated by offense, he was 2-0 in two key starts with a 3.50 ERA.

Ancestors:

Whiskey Allen, C, Cleveland - Whiskey had an incredible final month of the season, giving hope that there are great things to come from him next year. In September, he hit .370 with 11 RBI and 16 runs scored.

Final: .363, 1 HR, 44 RBI, 49 R, 314 AB, 114 H, 12 2B, 10 3B, 16 K, 24 BB, 28-11 SB, .880 OPS

Heinrich Kahle, 1B, Cincinnati - He struggled again in September, hitting just .179 (5 for 28).

Final: .212, 0 HR, 6 RBI, 14 R, 184 AB, 39 H, 3 2B, 3 3B, 17 K, 17 BB, 3-0 SB, .542 OPS... He set career highs in G, AB, 3B, R and BB.

Campbell Ditty, CF, New York (N) - Ditty hit .375 in September (9 for 24) with 3 RBI and 2 runs scored.

Final: .288, 1 HR, 23 RBI, 16 R, 170 AB, 49 H, 4 2B, 6 3B, 24 K, 7 BB, 2-1 SB, .724 OPS
