June's notable games...

June 5th, 1905

Plank Untouchable, Tosses No-Hitter
It was a terrific day for Eddie Plank of the Philadelphia Athletics at Columbia Park. The left-hander stood out with a fantastic 2-0 no-hitter against the Washington Senators.
"I knew I had a no-no going in about the sixth inning when I noticed no one was talking to me anymore," he said, referring to the time-honored superstition of avoiding the pitcher so as not to jinx the no-hitter. "Don't let people fool you. Everybody on the field and in the ballpark knows what's happening. They just pretend they don't."
For the game, Plank totaled 2 walks and 10 strikeouts in a very strong outing.
"His mechanics were perfect, and I don't think he threw one bad pitch in the whole game," Philadelphia manager Connie Mack said. "He was that good."
This year, Plank has compiled a 7-5 mark with a 1.63 ERA in 12 starts.

Buttons Briggs Hurls No-No Against Chicago
It was the game that pitchers dream about: the no-hitter.
It happened at Columbia Park. Buttons Briggs of the Philadelphia Athletics was right on target against the Chicago White Sox in a 7-0 victory. Briggs zeroed in on them, holding them hitless with 6 strikeouts and 2 walks.
"I just had it all today," Briggs told BNN reporters after the game. "Very good stuff and great location. That is a combination that's hard to beat."
This year, Briggs has compiled a 9-3 record with a 2.06 ERA.

Howell Twirls No-Hitter Against St. Louis
It was a fantastic day for New York Highlanders starter Harry Howell and a lousy day for the St. Louis Browns.
The New York hurler's pitching artistry completely befuddled and bewildered the Browns, as the Highlanders cruised to a 7-1 win. When it was all over, Howell was credited with one of the rarer feats in baseball -- a no-hitter.
"The ball was moving and darting and, best of all, going where I wanted it to go," Howell said later.
He rang up 6 strikeouts and allowed 5 walks while shutting St. Louis down at Hilltop Park.
For the season, Howell has a record of 24 wins and 12 losses in 39 appearances. He has an ERA of 2.45 and has fanned 163 batters in 327 innings.

1905 World Series results

1905 World Series: New York Highlanders vs. Chicago Cubs

Results

Game 1, October 11th, 1905, Hilltop Park
World Series Game 1 Victory for Howell and New York
The New York Highlanders started the World Series in style, downing the visiting Chicago Cubs at Hilltop Park by a score of 6-1 to stake an early 1-0 lead in the best-of-7 series. Highlanders right-hander Harry Howell threw 9.0 innings of 6-hit ball.
Howell allowed 1 run on 6 hits over 9 innings for the Highlanders. He walked 3 and struck out 6.
"Every team in baseball loses," Cubs manager Tom Loftus said. "We're in the playoffs and we still have the same guys that got us here. We'll bounce back."
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Hilltop Park in New York.
Highlanders lead series 1-0

Game 2, October 12th, 1905, Hilltop Park
Cubs Clip Highlanders, 3-2, in WS Contest
Bill Bernhard pitched well, but the New York Highlanders lost anyway, falling, 3-2, in extra innings to the Chicago Cubs at Hilltop Park. With the win, Chicago tied the best-of-7 World Series at 1 games apiece. Bernhard was effective, giving the Highlanders 17 innings and allowing 3 runs.
Bernhard pitched a very strong game for the Highlanders, allowing 11 hits in 17 innings while striking out 3. It was all for naught, however.
The next game is set to be played for October 14th, 1905 at the West Side Grounds in Chicago.
Series tied 1-1

Game 3, October 14th, 1905, West Side Grounds
Cubs Hammered by Seymour, Drop Game 3 to Highlanders
Riding the 3-hit performance of center fielder Cy Seymour, the New York Highlanders got a road win against the Chicago Cubs, 7-4, in Game 3 of the World Series. Seymour was 3-5 with a home run and 2 singles. He drove in 2 runs and scored once for the Highlanders, who now lead the best-of-7 series, 2 games to 1.
New York used a timely hit from Howard Wakefield to get the win. The pinch hitter stroked a run-scoring double in the top of the eighth inning to put the Highlanders ahead, 5-4. It was his only hit in 1 at-bat, but it was a difference-maker.
"We lost," Chicago manager Tom Loftus said later. "We'll deal with it. The series isn't over."
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at the West Side Grounds in Chicago.
Highlanders lead series 2-1

Game 4, October 15th, 1905, West Side Grounds
Almost There: New York On Cusp of World Series Triumph After 2-1 Win
Harry Howell pitched a gem to help the New York Highlanders escape with a tight, 2-1 victory over the Chicago Cubs in a low-scoring World Series contest. The right-handed Howell threw 9.0 innings of 5-hit ball in the win, just enough for the Highlanders on a day when their offense dried up. New York now leads the best-of-7 series 3-1.
Howell delivered a quality start for New York. The 5-foot-9 right-hander allowed 1 earned run on 5 hits over 9 innings of work.
"Things aren't going great right now," Chicago manager Tom Loftus said. "But you don't need me to tell you that."
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at the West Side Grounds in Chicago.
Highlanders lead series 3-1

Game 5, October 16th, 1905, West Side Grounds
New York Wins World Series Crown
Sometimes the winner is the one who got the lucky bounces and the lucky calls, and sometimes the winner is just the one who played better.
It was the latter case in 1905, as the New York Highlanders topped the Chicago Cubs 6-4 tonight at West Side Grounds to win the World Series. It was the 1st title in franchise history.
"When you play for championships, you have to play better than the team in the other dugout. We did that in this series, and all year. Now we're the best team in baseball," said New York starting pitcher Harry Howell, who was named series MVP.
The Highlanders took the series 4-1. The new titleholders completed the regular season with a first-place finish in the AL and a 93-61 record.
New York manager John McGraw grinned and nodded when asked to comment on Howell's words.
"Harry said it best -- we played better than the other team," the skipper said.
Hometown officials announced they were already planning a "grand celebration" for the winners in the days to come.
Highlanders win series 4-1

Series MVP: P Harry Howell (New York Highlanders)

Keeler Reaches 2,500
Willie Keeler has gone through many bats during his playing career. None of them means as much to him as the one he used to crack career hit number 2,500 at Palace of the Fans yesterday.
The 34-year-old Superbas right fielder told reporters after the game, "I plan to keep this bat at home in my own private Hall of Fame."
It was a happy day for Keeler from the standpoint of the 2,500-hit milestone, but a little disappointing, too. Despite his achievement, Brooklyn dropped the contest to the Cincinnati Reds 10-4.
For the day, Keeler finished the day with 3 hits in 5 at-bats.
For his career, Keeler is hitting .359 with 29 homers, 810 RBIs, and 2,500 hits.

Superbas Losing Streak at 6 After Extra-Inning Loss to Cardinals
Sherry Magee led the charge as the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Brooklyn Superbas, 6-5, in 11 innings at Washington Park. Magee, who leads the NL in home runs with 5, belted 3 home runs, while adding 4 RBIs and scoring three times. The Superbas, at 17-30, have lost 6 in a row.
With the game tied in the top of the 11th inning, Magee had a clutch at-bat. That's when he hit a solo home run to give the Cardinals a 6-5 lead.
"Our team found a way to get it done," said Magee.

Detroit Goes Hitless Against Brown
Mordecai Brown relied on excellent pitch selection and pinpoint control to hold Detroit hitless in a win, 4-0, at Bennett Park.
"Nobody goes out to pitch a no-hitter," he said later. "We just go out and try to get a win. A 10-9 win is better than a 1-0 loss. My pitching buddies might not be too happy giving up nine runs but a win is a win. The key to it today was I mixed my pitches well. I kept the Tigers off balance and guessing the whole game."
The 29-year-old starter rung up 3 strikeouts and no walks in whipping the Tigers.
"When a guy is throwing strikes the way he was and is locating well, it is going to be a long day for any club," Detroit skipper George Stallings said.
To date this season, Brown is 15-3 with 18 starts and an ERA of 1.05 with 73 strikeouts in 170.2 innings.
