OK, so the way I'm reading it is that you guys were leading the game 1-0 when the SP left, and the lead never changed - which is why he rightfully took the loss...

You are exactly right and now in hindsight I’m embarrassed that I even asked the question. I don’t know why, but in my mind the score was tied 1 to 1 going into the 9th inning. Not sure what I was thinking or looking at. Ugh

Games 42 - 44: Boston Americans vs. Baltimore Orioles
On the losing side in 7 of the last 9 games, Boston needed to turn things around in order to stay in the hunt for the American League pennant. While Game 1 of the 3-game road series against the Baltimore Orioles did not go the way the Americans wanted it to, they bounced back to take the remaining games and hopefully, get back to their winning ways.
Game 42: The Baltimore Orioles (20-22) ran away with this one, jumping out to a quick lead and cruising to a 7 to 2 victory over the visiting Boston Americans (24-18). Not only did Baltimore pitcher Wiley Piatt (4-5) keep opposing batters in check (allowing just 2 earned runs on 9 hits, while striking out 5 and finishing with a Game Score of 66), he smashed the ball at the plate (2 for 4, 3 RBIs). Taking the loss for the Americans was Cy Young (4-5), who allowed 7 runs (3 earned) on 11 hits (5 extra base) and 1 walk to finish with a Game Score of 40. In addition to Piatt's efforts, the Baltimore hit-attack was helped by Otto Krueger (2 for 4, 2 Runs, 2 RBIs, and 1 Walk) and Roy Thomas (2 for 4, Double). Boston's limited hitting success was provided by Ossee Schreckengost (3 for 4, 1 Run, 1 RBI, Triple) and John Farrell (2 for 4, 1 Run, Double). Player of the Game: Wiley Piatt Game 43: Just what the team needed, a dominate pitching performance by Noodles Hahn to guide Boston (25-18) to a 2 to 0 win over the Orioles (20-23). In picking up the win, Hahn (8-4) tossed a complete game shutout, allowing just 5 hits, 1 walk, and 10 strikeouts to finish with a Game Score of 86. While Ed Doheny (2-3) was tagged with the loss, he pitched very well allowing 2 runs (0 earned) giving up 9 hits and 2 walks and ended with a Game Score of 66. It was the bottom of the Boston lineup that provided the offensive firepower, with the John Farrell (batting 7th, 2 for 4, Double), Pat Crisham (batting 8th, 2 for 4, 2 RBI, Double), and Noodles Hahn (batting 9th, 2 for 3). Player of the Game: Noodles Hahn (Season: #8 / Career: #8) Game 44: After 2 consecutive disappointing outings, the pressure was on Boston pitcher Jesse Tannehill to turn things around. Tannehill (7-4) rose to the occasion, allowing just 1 earned run (Game Score of 68) to lead Boston (26-18) to a 3 to 1 victory over Baltimore (20-24). Ted Lewis (3-6) was saddled with the loss, allowing 3 runs (all earned) on 8 hits and 2 walks (Game Score of 62). Boston centerfielder Bill Lange was the catalyst for the team's offense today, going 2 for 4 with 1 Run, 1 RBI, and Double. Player of the Game: Jesse Tannehill (Season: #8 / Career: #8)

Games 45 - 47: Detroit Tigers vs. Boston Americans
There is really no way to sugarcoat this series outcome. The Tigers were clearly the better team and demonstrated why they sit atop the American League standings. In getting swept, Boston dropped to 4th place in the AL, and are now 4-11 in the last 15 games. The Team is not trending the right direction if they have World Series aspirations.
Game 45: What an outing by Tiger ace Doc White! The rookie southpaw was dialed in today, striking out an AL and MLB record 13 batters in leading Detroit (29-16) to a 3 to 1 victory over the Americans (26-19). White (6-6) scattered 8 hits and issued 1 walk, allowing 1 run (0 earned), to finish with a Game Score of 80. Fred Klobedanz (7-4) took the loss, allowing 3 runs (1 earned) while giving up 6 hits and 3 walks for a Game Score of 69. Hobe Ferris (2 for 4) and Roger Bresnahan (2 for 3, 1 RBI) led the Detroit hitting attack, while Boston was led by Fred Clarke (2 for 4, 1 RBI, Double), John Farrell (2 for 4, 1 RBI), and Bill Lange (2 for 4, Triple). Player of the Game: Doc White Game 46: Detroit (30-16) jumped out to an early lead and cruised to a 5 to 1 victory over Boston (26-20). Tigers' pitcher Togie Pittinger (9-3) limited the Americans to just 1 run on 4 hits and 2 walks; Game Score of 75. Boston pitcher Cy Young (4-6) continues to struggle, picking up another loss in which he allowed 5 runs (2 earned) on 5 hits and 4 walks; Game Score of 63. Detroit 1st baseman Candy LaChance had a nice day at the plate, going 2 for 4 (Triple) with 2 Runs and 2 RBIs. Jesse Hoffmeister was the lone bright spot at the plate for Boston, going 2 for 3 (Triple) with 1 RBI and 1 Walk. Player of the Game: Togie Pittinger Game 47: Well any chance Boston had to grab at least one game from Detroit rested on the arm of ace Noodles Hahn. Unfortunately for the hometown fans, the Tigers (31-16) had other plans, topping the Americans (26-21) by a score of 6 to 4. In one of his worst outings of the year, Hahn (8-5) was roughed up for 6 runs (all earned) in which he allowed 11 hits and 1 walk to finish with a Game Score of 42. Tigers pitcher John Malarkey (9-3) limited Boston to 4 runs (1 earned) on 6 hits for a Game Score of 71. Catcher Tom Daly had Hahn's number, smashing out a Double and Triple on his way to a 2 for 4 days (2 Runs and 1 RBI). Win Mercer provided limited offense for the Americans, going 3 for 4 with 3 RBIs. Player of the Game: John Malarkey

American League Player of the Week
Opposing batters did not stand a chance last week against Rube Waddell, as the rookie sensation dominated everyone he faced. Waddell picked up 2 wins, while allowing 0 runs and striking out 17 batters in just 18 innings to earn American League Player of the Week honors. The Washington Senators ace is quickly making the case as the best pitcher in baseball.

Games 48 - 50: Boston Americans vs. Chicago White Sox
A quick trip over to the Windy City saw the Boston Americans get a much-needed sweep of the hometown Chicago White Sox. The wins moved Boston into a tie for third place in the American League; 3 games behind the Tigers.
Game 48: Boston (27-21) struck first, putting up 2 runs in the top of the 1st inning giving Jesse Tannehill (8-4) the support he needed as the Americans prevailed over the White Sox (23-25) by a score of 3 to 1. In going the distance, Tannehill scattered 6 hits and issued 1 walk to finish with a Game Score of 74. While he was tagged with the loss, Jim Sullivan (6-4) pitched well, allowing 3 runs (1 earned) on 8 hits and walked 1; Game Score of 64. Out of the combined 14 hits on the day, there was just 1 extra-base hit; a Triple by Chicago second baseman Jack Crooks. The only multi-hit performance was by White Sox catcher Mike Grady (2 for 3). Player of the Game: Jesse Tannehill (Season: #9 / Career: #9) Game 49: While Boston again jumped out to a quick lead, this was a game that that the White Sox (23-26) lost rather than the Americans (28-21) won; as the hometown team was done in by 4 errors on the day. Fred Klobedanz (8-4) was the winning pitcher. allowing 3 runs (all earned) while giving up 9 hits and 3 walks to finish with a Game Score of 57, while Bill Carrick was the hard luck loser despite not allowing any earned runs; Game Score of 65. Rightfielder Sport McAllister went 3 for 4 (Triple, 2 RBI) and shortstop Kid Elberfeld (2 for 5, Double, 1 Run) led the Boston hit-attack, while John Anderson (3 for 4, 1 Run) and Mike Grady (2 for 4, 1 Run) provided offense for Chicago. Player of the Game: Bill Carrick Game 50: After an extended stretch of rather anemic offense, something clicked for Boston (29-21) hitters today as they pounded out 12 runs on 14 hits and 5 walks to top the White Sox (23-27) by a score of 12 to 4. Boston veteran pitcher Cy Young (5-6) picked up the win (4 earned runs on 9 hits; Game Score of 57), while Willie Sudhoff (5-7) only lasted 2 2/3 innings to get tagged for the loss (8 runs (4 earned) on 7 hits; Game Score of 17). Amos Rusie and Al Maul provided relief help for the White Sox. Boston had 4 batters who smacked out multiple hits on the day: Win Mercer (2 for 6, 2 Runs, 3 RBIs), Bill Lange (2 for 4, Home Run, 1 Run, 2 RBIs, 1 Walk), Dave Brain (4 for 5, Double, 2 Runs, 2 RBIs), and Ossee Schreckengost (3 for 5, Triple, 3 Runs, 3 RBIs). Mike Grady (3 for 4, Double, 2 Runs, 1 RBI) was one of the few bright spots for the White Sox. Player of the Game: Ossee Schreckengost (Season: #1 / Career: #1)

National League Player of the Week
It seems like the Reds have no shortage of excellent hitters. Rightfielder Ducky Holmes proved this point last week, as he scorched the ball for a .500 batting average (13 for 26) with 8 Runs and 5 RBIs to take home National League Player of the Week honors.

Week 8 Team Power Rankings
After spending most of the season in the top spot, the Boston Beaneaters' difficult week dropped them in the rankings allowing the Detroit Tigers to take over the #1 spot. The Philadelphia Athletics moved up 3 spots (15th to 12th) for the biggest jump forward, while the Chicago White Sox fell 5 spots (9th to 14th) for the biggest drop on the week.

Games 51 - 53: Boston Americans vs. Philadelphia Athletics
The best way to summarize how the Boston Americans have played over the last month is "consistently inconsistent." For ever good series where they take 2 of 3 or get the sweep, the team turns around and does the exact opposite the very next series. The results are getting rather frustrating, and while I am trying to figure out a line-up tweak or rotation change there just does not seem to be a pattern (at least one that my novice eyes hasn't spotted) that makes sense to adjust. In this series, Boston dropped 2 of 3 games to the Athletics, and moved the team 5 games behind the 1st place Detroit Tigers in the American League race.
Game 51: The Boston Americans (29-22) ran up against a buzz saw today, as Philadelphia Athletics (19-32) pitcher Mal Eason (3-3) twirled a gem on his way to a 2 to 0 victory. Eason limited Boston to just 5 hits (all singles) and 1 walk, while striking out 5 to finish with a Game Score of 81 and drop his ERA to 1.94 on the season. Noodles Hahn (8-6) took the loss, allowing 2 runs (0 earned) while giving up 9 hits and 1 walk for a Game Score of 67. Three Athletics batters had multi-hit day, led by George Davis (2 for 4, Double, 1 Run), Socks Seybold (2 for 4, 1 RBI), and Tom McCrerry (2 for 4, 1 RBI). Player of the Game: Mal Eason Game 52: Always hate to see the team lose, but this sure was a fun game to watch play out. Down by a score of 4 to 1 heading into the top of the 9th inning, Boston (29-23) mounted a rally that drove in 1 run and led to a bases-loaded situation that came to an abrupt end when Win Mercer lifted a lazy fly ball to short center to end the game. Philadelphia (20-32) pitcher Doc McJames (3-4) picked up the win (Game Score of 68), while Boston pitcher Jesse Tannehill (8-5) was burdened with the loss (Game Score of 57). The offensive firepower for Philadelphia was provided by Tom McCreery (1 for 4, Homerun, 1 Run, 1 RBI), Honus Wagner (2 for 4, Double, 1 Run, 1 RBI), and Billy Clingman (2 for 4, 1 Run). Player of the Game: Doc McJames Game 53: A much needed win for Boston (30-23) as they were able to put together an 8th inning scoring effort to top the Athletics (20-33) by a score of 4 to 1. The Americans were led by the solid pitching effort of Fred Klobedanz (9-4), as the crafty soft-tosser allowed 1 run (0 earned) on 9 hits and 2 walks to lower his season ERA to 2.45 and finished with a Game Score of 68. Philadelphia pitcher Earl Moore was tagged with the loss, allowing 4 runs (3 earned) while giving up 11 hits a 1 walk, striking out 8, and a Game Score of 58. The Boston offense showed some signs of life, as they knocked 11 hits (3 for extra bases); led by Fred Clarke (1 for 4, Triple, 1 Run, 2 RBI), Win Mercer (2 for 4, Double, 1 Run), and Frank Chance (2 for 3, 1 RBI, 1 Walk). On negative note, Boston shortstop Kid Elberfeld committed 2 more errors to raise his team-leading season total to 26. Player of the Game: Fred Klobedanz (Season: #4 / Career: #4)

Games 54 - 56: Washington Senators vs. Boston Americans
Still far too many errors committed during the 3-Game series, but Boston was able to come away with the surprising sweep over the Senators. From a league-wide perspective, I noticed the AI moved a few more players onto the trading block, so I am evaluating whether to shake things up. The wins moved the Americans into a 2nd-Place tie in the American League race; 4 games behind the Detroit Tigers.
Game 54: An outstanding pitching performance by Boston Americans (31-23) starter Cy Young (6-6), as he limited the Washington Senators (33-21) to 1 run (unearned) on just 2 hits and 2 walks. In picking up the 5 to 1 win, Young struck on 5 and finished with a season-best Game Score of 84. Taking the loss was Casey Patten (8-3) in which he allowed 5 runs (1 earned) on 6 hits and 1 walk to finish with a Game Score of 60. John Farrell (2 for 3, 1 Run, 1 RBI), Win Mercer (1 for 3, 1 Run, 1 RBI), and Kid Elberfeld (1 for 4, Double, 2 Runs) provided the run support needed for Boston to prevail. Player of the Game: Cy Young (Season: #5 / Career: #5) Game 55: Thanks to the timely hitting of Jesse Hoffmeister (3 for 4, Triple, 1 Run, 3 RBIs) and Pat Crisham (3 for 3, 2 Runs), Boston (32-23) was able to top the Senators (33-22) by a score of 5 to 3. Noodles Hahn (9-6) picked up the win, allowing 3 runs (0 earned) while scattering 6 hits and allowing 1 walk on his way to a Game Score of 73. Jack Chesbro (7-6) was tagged with the loss, giving up 5 runs (all earned) on 10 hits while striking out 6; Game Score of 48. In the loss, Washington 3rd baseman Doc Casey had a nice day at the plate, going 2 for 4 (Triple, 1 Run, 2 RBIs). Player of the Game: Noodles Hahn (Season: #9 / Career: #9) Game 56: The final game of the series saw Boston (33-23) ace Jesse Tannehill (9-5) limit the Senators (33-23) to just 1 run as the Americans cruised to a 7 to 1 victory. Tannehill did not allow any earned runs, walked 1, and struckout 4 to finish with a Game Score of 74. Washington pitcher Cy Seymour (3-2) was not at his best, as he allowed 7 runs (all earned) on 7 hits and 6 hits for a Game Score of 34. John Farrell (2 for 3, Double, 5 RBIs, 1 Walk) and Bill Lange (3 for 5, Triple, 2 Runs, 1 RBI) had an outstanding day at the plate. Player of the Game: Jesse Tannehill (Season: #10 / Career: #10)

Game 57: Boston Americans vs. Cleveland Blues
Game 57: The Americans (33-24) closed out the month of May with a loss to the the Blues (32-25), as pitcher "Wild Bill" Donovan (10-5) was in the zone; allowing just 3 hits and 5 walks while striking out 9 on his way to a Game Score of 85. Boston pitcher Fred Klobedanz (9-5) was roughed up to the tune of 4 runs (1 earned) on 6 hits and 1 walk over 7 innings of play (97 pitches) to finish with a Game Score of 44. Reliever Chummy Gray was tasked with mopping up the 8th inning of play (1 hit an 1 strikeout) to end the sour day. Though neither team had an abundance of offense, Cleveland catcher Larry McLean had a respectable 2 for 3 (2 Runs) effort.
Player of the Game: Bill Donovan
