1913 - Under the Hood

  • Another year, another disappointment for the Jints, who lose the Series again, this time to the A’s in five.
  • Art Fletcher never won a batting title. Neither did Armando Marsans, Tillie Shafer or Jim Viox.
  • Vic Saier led the league in triples in 1913, but never HR throughout his career.
  • Hugh Bedient, who only played for four seasons, never won an ERA title. Nor did Hank Robinson, Lefty Tyler or Ray Collins.
  • Tommy Leach never hit for the cycle. Nor did Red Murray. But Frank Baker did in 1911.
  • Babe Adams never hurled a no-no. Neither did Earl Yingling or Charlie Smith.
  • Walter Johnson threw his only career no-hitter in 1920.
  • Bert Humphries’ .800 winning percentage (16-4) led the league in the corresponding historical season, but he never won an ERA title.
  • Shoeless Joe Jackson led the league in hits twice (1912, 1913) and in both OBP (1911) and SLG (1913) once, but never in BA.
  • Duffy Lewis had 109 RBI in 1912 but never led the league in this category, nor did he ever hit for the cycle. Johnny Bates, however, did so in 1907.
  • Jim Scott never was the King of K.
  • Joe Lake never led the league in saves and had only 5 total in his career.

  • Miracle puts too fine a point on it, methinks, as the Braves – led by former Cubs legend Johnny Evers – recover from a 26-40 start to go 72-19 for the rest of the season including a sweep of the A’s in the World Series.
  • Joe Connolly, who only played in the bigs for four seasons, never won a batting title. Nor did career .292 hitter Heinie Groh.
  • Boardwalk Brown never led the league in ERA.
  • Bullet Joe Bush threw a no-hitter in 1916. Bill James, Rip Hagerman, Fritz Coumbe, Rube Benton, Jim Shaw, Joe Boehling or Larry Cheney never threw one.
  • Willie Mitchell never led the league in Ks nor threw a no-no.
  • Bobby Veach hit for the cycle in 1920. Gus Williams and Jack Fournier never did.

  • With the Federal League causing plenty of consternation, the Red Sox beat the Phils in the WS.
  • Gavvy Cravath led the league with 24 HR in the corresponding IRL season. In fact, he led virtually every batting category except BA, which he never led in his career. Neither did Heinie Groh or, most surprisingly, lifetime 356 hitter Shoeless Joe Jackson. I guess that’s the Cobb factor at work.
  • Babe Ruth won the 1916 ERA title with 1.75, his lowest career mark.
  • Bobby Veach led the league in RBI 3 times but never in BA or HR.
  • Jake Daubert won two batting titles.
  • Jean Dubuc never threw a no-no. Neither did Wheezer Dell, Red Faber, Karl Adams or Hooks Dauss.
  • Marty McHale earned just 1 save in his career.
  • Between them, the two Bill James that were pitching around this time had 4 saves. I’m not finding out which one led D1 in this category, but it was one of them. I thought the George Burnses were confusing... Far easier to unravel is the fact that Nap Rucker’s 14 in the same sim match his IRL career total.
  • Neither Sherry Magee nor Doug Baird ever hit for the cycle.
  • Zack Wheat’s D200 total of 15 HR almost matches his career high of 16 in 1922, however he never led the league in this stat cat.
