Thursday, October 7, 1954 World Series Preview The Brooklyn Dodgers have made it back to their third consecutive World Series, while the Cleveland Indians have dethroned the New York Yankees for the first time in six years. The last time the Yankees did not appear in a World Series was in 1948, when the Indians defeated the Boston Braves. Brooklyn has activated RF Carl Furillo for the series, a key addition to their lineup, which will have to deal with a cavernous Cleveland Stadium in the first two games. The Dodgers are hopeful that Roy Campanella will return to form in the series. Attendance for the series is expected to be high this year, as Cleveland fans are giddy over beating the hated Yankees, while Dodger fans are confident they will get their first World Series win now that they do not have to deal with the Yankees. As the rest of the teams watch the series, they are also starting to look closely at their roster situations, since this will be the first off-season involving total free agency for eligible players. Two of the games transcendent stars - Ted Williams and Stan Musial - are both eligible to test the market this winter. It is unclear if either might sign a contract extension during the series or if they will file for free agency later this fall. Teams are also starting to plan out their scouting work for the upcoming amateur draft, which is set for December. A list of players eligible for that draft will be released next week, when Commissioner Ford Frick is expected to provide updates on expansion, relocation and ballpark concerns. I think it was mentioned earlier that the Senators (it might’ve been another team) weren’t moving.

I bumped the ballpark capacities up by 5,000 for both the Indians and the Dodgers for the World Series only. I will drop them back to the actual listed capacities after the series. I wanted to simulate additional standing room or temporary seating options.
I am not importing yearly financials, rather I am letting the system use its own internal inflation system year by year. I have noticed in the past that the new financials are updated the day after the world series ends as you enter the off-season. I will be sure to post a screen shot of what changed heading into the next year. My initial plans are to keep the Dodgers in Brooklyn and allow only the Angels to be in LA following their expansion in 1961. The great ballpark mods for the Dodger Dome and a re-imagined modern Ebbetts Field will be used, just not sure of the timing just yet. I am also planning on using the other "modern" versions of ballparks that have been created to replace the cookie cutter parks of the 70's. I will have teams move into those multi-use stadiums for 3 or 4 years to simulate the time needed to rebuild the modernized version of their old homes.... Polo Grounds, Crosley Field, Forbes Field, etc. I do not control any one team, but I love to just jump in and "watch" a game in one-pitch mode. The ballpark mods are absolutely fantastic for me. After I complete this first year of my re-imagined MLB, I will start simming one month at a time to allow me to move more quickly through history. I love the idea of watching the league evolve with the players I remember, but I also love the randomness that will develop. Where players are drafted and how their development pans out are fascinating parts of the game to me. |

Thursday, October 7, 1954 Commissioner Announces Details on Expansion & Relocation Baseball Commissioner Ford Frick announced today that all current MLB franchise ownership groups have agreed to an unprecedented revenue sharing agreement, which will stabilize franchise operations heading into the future. Owners agreed to temporarily stop all of their current franchise relocation efforts in return for the league agreeing to provide funding for ballpark renovation or new construction initiatives. Teams will still have the ability to petition the league and owners to relocate a franchise, however they must be able to fully fund a new modern ballpark before any serious consideration will be given to the request. If a teams overall financial situation precludes them from making improvements to their current facilities, the league will step in to provide funding assistance. Some relocation may be considered necessary by the league and its owners to better distribute and market MLB across the country. The commissioners office has determined that there is a need to expand into the western part of the United States, including California. The Griffith family, owner of the Senators franchise has been negotiating with both Minneapolis and Los Angeles syndicates regarding a franchise relocation, but Commissioner Frick has intervened and will not be allowing those talks to continue. The Senators will be staying in Washington, D.C., with financial assistance provided at some point to help renovate their current ball park facilities. The O'Malley family has long been advocating for a new home for their Brooklyn Dodger franchise and MLB has now agreed to set up a financial package that will allow for a new ballpark to be constructed somewhere in Brooklyn. There are still valid concerns regarding current franchise locations in Milwaukee, Philadelphia (Athletics) and New York (Giants). The commissioner's office is now working with officials in Atlanta, Oakland and San Francisco related to ballpark options and a potential relocation of these teams to coincide with a general westward expansion of both the American and National Leagues. There have been no formal timetables created regarding future relocations or expansions, but the commissioner did mention 1961 as a potential year for both instances to occur. Potential expansion cities and ownership groups would have until the end of 1956 to submit a formal application to the league. It is hoped that the expansion teams would be named by 1959 in time for a 1961 start up. |

I will be adjusting league finances during each expansion year. The new teams will be created on the first day of the off-season following the 1960, 1970, 1985, 2000 world series. On that day I will adjust the average / baseline attendance for the league and I will also add money to the national media baseline for the league (substantial per team dollars) and to each teams cash on hand.
I am not sure of the amounts yet, but I will likely be in the tens of millions of dollars during each round of expansion. While I am not importing actual year by year financials, I will make sure that amounts are in line with the current financial world so as not to bonk the totals out of whack. Owners are set to control their own budgets, so any cash infused will likely be taken right back out when the new league year begins, but some teams may chose to spend it. Adjusting the media contracts helps push more available operating cash to each team. I will look closely at the real life expansion fees paid by teams as they entered the league and will likely use those number as my baseline for adding to the national media contract numbers. A reminder that I am using 1984 statistics every year in my world - I adjust those stats on opening day every year - and make sure my strategy settings are adjusted as needed for the era on that day as well since they do change some when you import a statistical year. |
