1950 Week 15 Recap

Thursday June 15th, 1950

BOX SCORES
  • Al Pratt shuts out Lafa on 4 hits and fans 16 in a dominant performance as Army wins 2-0. The Leopards hit back on Friday with a 3-2 win in 10, with a Jacob Pugh solo HR [2] the eventual game-winner.
  • 1B Manuel Espinoza has 4 ribbies including 2 in the 10th that would prove the difference as Ohio State notches a 6-4 away win at Michigan. Buckeyes starter Bill Hill allows just 2 hits and strikes out 14.
  • Second-baseman Garrett Carter goes deep twice [10] and drives in 6 to power Illinois past Cincinnati 11-2. They do it easy again on Friday with a 9-1 win, as LF Justin Browning racks up 5 hits.
  • Nick Berg gives GWU 8 innings of two-hit shutout ball to get the Colonials a tight 2-0 win at home to Cornell. The Big Red get the series split on Friday, with 1B Bert Babineau’s 2 HR [10] and 4 ribbies powering them to a 10-inning 7-6 win.
  • In a battle between old enemies, Harvard knocks off Yale 6-2 as Johnny Broaca earns his 10th win of the season, and the Crimson their 40th. Broaca mows down a club record 14 Bulldogs over 8 innings. Harvard doubles down the next day with a hard-fought 9-8 win in which 3B Joe Faber’s 4 RBI are crucial.
  • A big game by LF Darnell Hughes helps Kansas State knock off Princeton 9-2. Hughes doubles, hits 2 dingers [13] and drives in 5, with Landon Siebert going the distance and allowing just 4 hits.
  • 1B Kevin Austin bashes 2 HR [8] and knocks in 3 as Northern Colorado wins their 5th on the trot, 8-3 at home to Stanford. The streak ends there, however, as they drop a 3-2 decision on Friday.
  • Chris Dinkins allows just one run on three hits as Stetson sneaks past Santa Clara 2-1. Another strong pitching performance by Jimmy Krenek and a homer and 3 RBI by LF Greg Freimuth get them a more comfortable 7-1 win the next day to move to 33-25.
  • LSU first-baseman Dave Yeiser has 5 hits and 3 RBI as the Tigers grab a 9-4 road win at Auburn.
  • MSU are lucky to walk away with a 5-4 victory in 10 at home to The Citadel, scoring one to tie the game in the 9th then walking it off when catcher David Alvardo walks one in. The win keeps the Bulldogs 3 clear atop the Southeast Conference. Their luck doesn’t extend to Friday, however, as the Bulldogs bounce back with a 5-1 win.
  • Shortstop Yutaka Ritz goes deep twice [3] and knocks in 3 to help Texas see off a dogged South Carolina outfit by 5 to 3. The Gamecocks split the series with a 7-0 win the next day, thanks mostly to a two-hitter by Joe Benz.
  • Vandy has a narrow escape at lowly Ole Miss. Trailing 3-1 after 7 they score one in the top 8th and then go ahead in the 9th on a 2-run single by Matt Gonda, scraping home in the end by 4 to 3. Friday sees another nail-biter between the two sides, with Ole Miss walking it off 5-4 thanks to a single by SS Dale Boyette.
  • TTU recovers from blowing a 2-run lead in the 9th to beat Rice 6-5 in 10, with Wil Talmi singling in what turns out to be the game-winning run. The Red Raiders pull off another thrilling win by the same scoreline on Friday, tying the game in the 9th and then winning it in 10 by dint of an RBI single from 2B Vince Pearlman.
  • An out-and-out slugfest at Arizona State with the hosts and New Mexico combining for 23 runs on 23 hits, including an astounding 13 home runs. New Mexico takes an early lead courtesy of a 6-spot in the 2nd, but by the end of 7 AZ State has gone ahead 8-7. The Lobos then score 4 in the top 9th and look set to win it, only for the home side to match them and walk it off 12-11. New Mexico’s Danny Riggs [11] and Nate Nix [11] each bang two out of the park, as do Sun Devils Larry Bettencourt [29] and John Knight [25], the latter of whose grand slam ends the contest in the most dramatic fashion possible. The Friday game gets a bit loose as well, with the Sun Devils taking it as well by 11 to 7, led by Edwardo Ravenoff’s 4-for-4 with 2 solo HR [8].
  • All in all, 17 of the 50 games played today were one-run affairs.

Friday June 16th, 1950

BOX SCORES
  • Indiana’s Samual Campopiano pitches 8 scoreless as the Hoosiers take down Maryland 5-0.
  • Miami fails to score a run in dropping both its home games against Villanova 3-0 and 2-0. They somehow manage to lose the Friday game despite the Redhawks getting only one hit, with both runs unearned.
  • After being thrashed 13-4 by Michigan State in the Thursday game, Navy look as set to drop the Friday one as well, but rally strongly with 9 in the 8th to win it 10-2. It’s a costly series for the Midshipmen, however, who in successive days lose key reliever Ernie Johnson for 6 weeks to a herniated disc and 2B Jason Brown for about the same length of time after he strains an abdominal.
  • Morgan Upton hurls a 5-hitter and 1B Bobby Healy hits a homer [10] and adds 4 RBI as Brown shuts out Dartmouth 7-0.
  • Notre Dame seems to be hitting peak form just at the right time, as they humiliate V-Tech by a combined 22-1. Five wins on the trot for the Irish see them move to 31-27 and close the gap on GWU in the Atlantic Conference to 4 games.
  • Catcher Andy Ingram goes deep twice [8] and knocks in 3, while 2B Nick Thomas has 4 RBI, as USC easily takes care of Richmond 10-3.
  • Ohio’s Ernie Swanson pitches a 4-hit shutout to lead the Bobcats to a 4-0 win at home to Saint Louis.
  • Min-Ki Yim’s two dingers [15] and 3 RBI help Mizzou to a 7-2 road win at Kansas.
  • Right-fielder Mike Munoz hits 2 taters [13] and drives in 5 as Duke masters North Carolina 8-2.
  • Florida 1B Joe Hauser has four hits including his 20th HR of the season and drives in 4 as the Gators demolish UNLV 14-5.
  • Texas A&M completes an upset road sweep of #2 Pepperdine with a 6-3 win. Aggies LF Owen Williquette is just a single short of the cycle and drives in 4 in a PotG performance.

Saturday June 17th, 1950

BOX SCORES
  • RF Robby King bashes 2 HR [8] and drives in 5 as Ball State demolishes Maryland 14-7.
  • Peek-A-Boo Veach strikes out 15 and a 2-run HR [10] in the 3rd by 1B Kyle Ruth holds up as Kent State sneaks past Cornell 2-1. The Golden Flashes press their luck again on Sunday, needing 10 innings and a walkoff solo shot by CF Chris Briansky to get a 5-4 win.
  • Dartmouth comes back from 7-1 down to win a thriller at Army 8-7, with a bases-loaded walk in the 10th to Joe Czerniewski getting them home. The Black knights turn the tables on Sunday with a 12-6 win on the back of a great game by shortstop Mark Raines, who doubles, homers [3], and drives in 5.
  • Louisville pulls one out of the fire with 6 in the top 9th to beat Columbia 9-7. 1B Sean Pross hits 2 dingers [4] for the Cardinals, including a 3-run job in the final-inning rally that puts his side ahead for good. Pross goes deep again on Sunday as Louisville takes the sweep with a 5-2 win, but they lose pitcher Tom Grimsley in the process, with a bout of elbow tendinitis set to keep him out of action for 6 weeks.
  • Harvard left-fielder Bill Hendershot goes 4-for-4 with his 12th dinger of the year and 2 RBI, while scoring 4 runs, as the Crimson beat Washington 13-7. Army’s loss to Dartmouth means Harvard now leads the North Conference by 2 games.
  • An incredible game at Barcroft Park sees GWU take a 4-3 lead into the 9th before Mizzou sends it into extras tied at 4 with a late run. The teams both score 3 in the 12th, but when Mizzou posts another 3-spot in the top 14th, the home side cannot respond and take a 10-7 loss. Shortstop Adam Hutto goes yard twice [5] and drives in 3 for the visitors. Hutto makes it 3 for the weekend in an equally dramatic Sunday game, with a 3-run HR in the top 9th by Tigers 1B Min-Ki Yim [16] getting them home by 8 to 6 for a precious road sweep that leaves them just one game adrift of the Colonials in the Atlantic Conference.
  • A huge result for Illinois as they whitewash Northeast rivals Bradley 12-0 at Dozer Park. The Illini rack up 16 hits, of which an amazing 12 are for extra bases (6 doubles, 3 triples, 3 homers), while Doc Amole spins a 4-hit CG shutout with 8 Ks. But the Braves bounce back with a 9-7 Sunday win, their 40th of the season, to bring the two sides level once more.
  • Florida steals one late from Fresno with 4 in the 9th to walk it off 11-10 on a single by 3B Bryan Graves. Babe Herman hits 2 homers [15] and drives in 3 for the Bulldogs in a losing cause. Fresno doesn’t make the same mistake the next day, thrashing the home side 19-2, with 3B Nate Olko’s 6 ribbies leading the onslaught and Herman at it again with two doubles, another dinger and 4 RBI. CF Jon Horner scores 5 runs to set a new John Dewey League record.
  • Rice’s Rusty Lopez allows a run on 3 hits in a CG performance as the Owls get a 9-1 home win over SD State. They keep their good form going with a comprehensive 11-1 win on Sunday.
  • Not nearly enough wins for fans of Ole Miss this season, but they get a big one at home here with a 14-2 thumping of TCU. CF Earl Smith has 4 hits including a triple and his 6th dinger of the campaign while driving in 6 to power the Rebs’ offence. Unfortunately they go back to their more regular ways on Sunday as TCU crushes them 10-2.
  • Usually plenty of activity when AZ State is involved and their home game against San Diego is no exception, with 9 HR in a 10-4 win for the Toreros. All 4 of the runs San Diego pitcher George Cuppy concedes are via solo shots. It’s not a good day for the AZ teams, as the Wildcats get pummelled at home as well, 14-3 by New Mexico, with Lobos 1B Andy Watson getting 4 hits including a home run [6] and 4 ribbies. Arizona almost blows a nine-run lead in the Sunday game before eventually scraping home by 10 to 9.
  • In a game that may well come back to haunt them, Cal Poly blows a 3-run lead in the top 9th to give Long Beach a 5-4 win, with a bases-clearing pinch-hit double by the 49ers’ Geoff Dolgner the decisive hit. The Mustangs bounce back the following day for a strong 11-2 victory.

Sunday June 18th, 1950

BOX SCORES
  • Notre Dame’s Rico Medina outduels Purdue’s Steve Lewis, pitching a 6-hit shutout as the Irish sneak by 1-0.
  • Ohio 2B Michael Burke drives in 4 runs as the Bobcats take a 10-9 thriller against Villanova. Dave Davis is the walkoff hero for the home side, winning the game with a two-out 2-run single in the bottom of the 9th.
  • V-Tech’s Rich Mackowiak shuts out Richmond on 5 hits and strikes out 7 as the Hokies cruise to a 9-0 road win.
  • Miami LF Chris Roundy’s 4 hit / HR [14] / 4 RBI game offsets Minnesota RF David Boswell’s 2 homers 5] and 4 ribsters as the Redhawks win a shootout 17-10. 15 of those runs come in the first 3 innings.
  • Two home runs [20] and 4 RBI by 2B Tony Lazzeri help Nebraska to a 6-3 home victory over Stanford, a win that finally gets the Cornhuskers out of last place in the rankings, a position they have held down since Week 6.
  • Bobby Voccio allows just 5 hits and no earned runs in a complete game performance as Kansas beats USC 8-1.
  • The game between Wake Forest and Stetson remains scoreless until the bottom 12th, when Hatters’ shortstop Whitey Witt sends the hosts home as victors with a 2-run tater [5].
  • Ian Foster shuts out Nevada on 6 hits while fanning 8 as Oklahoma take a 7-0 home win.
  • Two of the Texas sides put on an absolute classic. UT scores a run in the bottom 9th to send their game against TTU into extras, then they exchange a run in the 10th to put it at 8 apiece. The game ends somewhat anticlimactically on a Mike Corbett SF in the home 13th, but I’m sure the 6000-odd Longhorns fans in attendance don’t mind that one bit, especially given the somewhat middling form their team has shown to this point.
  • Tulane and NM State play one of the longest games in the ACBA so far, a marathon that lasts nearly 5 hours and ends with Tulane winning 7-5 to move to 36-24. Solly Hemus is the match-winner with a 2-run homer in the top 16th, just his 4th of the year.

HML Player of the Week: Jason Peebles (Notre Dame) .667 / 2 HR / 4 RBI.

JDL Player of the Week: Edwardo Ravenoff (Arizona State) .706 / 4 HR / 5 RBI.

This week’s major injury news:
  • The Citadel CF Taylor Bare: ruptured disc (back); season
  • UC Santa Barbara SP Justin Gibson: strained ACL; season
  • Bradley SP Isaiah Gilliam: shoulder inflammation; season
  • Auburn SP Neil Button: hamstring strain; 2-3 months
  • Wazzu SP Frank Hoffman: forearm strain; 7 weeks

1950 Week 15 Rankings

A riveting week of games, especially in the context of the official rankings, with four teams all with a chance of taking the #1 spot. In the end it was Harvard who came out on top, reaching the pinnacle for the first time despite having been in the Top Ten for all but two weeks of the season to date and never lower than 13th. Oregon State have also reached their high-point for the year at #2, with Pepperdine, Navy and Illinois rounding out the five top spots. Less than a ratings point separates them, so expect plenty of juggling between now and season’s end. They have put a decent gap between them and the others, although not so large as to rule them out entirely. Iowa (up 15 to #45) and Kansas (up 14 to #54) made the strongest upward moves this week, while Stetson jumped back into the official list with a solid week. Princeton were the worst-performed side, falling 16 spots to #69. And Huskers fans can “celebrate” their team finally shaking off the cellar-dweller tag as they “jump” to #99 at the expense of Minnesota.

Top 25 teams as at end of ACBA Season 1950, Week 15 (Record / Points / Previous week’s ranking)

June 19, 1950: the Murphy McCormack files

1950 Week 16 Recap

Thursday June 22nd, 1950

BOX SCORES
  • 8 innings of 5-hit shutout ball by David Willis leads Villanova to a 1-0 home win over Kent State. They follow that up with another tight win on Friday, with 2B Tom Beckham’s 2 homers [5] a big factor in their 12-inning walkoff 7-6 victory.
  • 2 dingers [8] and 4 RBI by shortstop Kelly Bailey can’t stop Ohio State dropping a 7-4 result to Miami, with the Redhawks scoring 3 in the top 11th and holding on for the win. Not much luck for the Ohio teams in extra-innings as the Bobcats also lose to Maryland, 7-6 in 10, with Terrapins catcher Ted Easterly going 3-for-5 with a double, a HR [16], and 4 ribbies.
  • CF Ryan Collins goes deep twice [10] and drives in 4 to power Kansas State to a 12-inning 7-6 win at V-Tech. Hokies third-baseman Milan Andrews does all he can for the home side, with 4 hits including his 9th HR of the season and 4 RBI. The Virginians return the favour the next day, winning 5-3 in 11 on a Tyler Butera 2-run walkoff homer [3] with Joe Morrison mowing down 16 Wildcats.
  • Johnny Broaca allows a run on 2 hits while fanning 11 in a 9-1 CG win for Harvard over Penn. Meanwhile, flagging Navy drop their game at Dartmouth 5-2 to fall 3 behind the Crimson in the Northeast Conference title race. A 3-1 Harvard win and a 4-3 Navy loss on Friday really puts the Midshipmen in the hole.
  • Having assumed the dreaded #100 spot in the ACBA ratings last week obviously doesn’t sit well with the Minnesota players, who respond with a 19-2 shellacking of Ball State. Golden Gophers RF David Boswell [6] and 1B Steve Heiden [11] both homer and knock in 4 in the win. The Gophers bounce back for a dour 4-3 win on Friday, with Dennis Jessup homering in the 11th – his first round-tripper of the season – to walk it off.
  • Emil Yde shuts Illinois out on 11 hits with 9 Ks as Michigan gets a crucial 4-0 away win to keep them in the North Conference mix. They back that up with a 2-1 Friday victory to move within 3 of Bradley.
  • Berkeley score all of their runs in a crazy 8th inning to pinch one late from USC by 7 to 4. They win the next day as well in a 19-14 slugfest, with 1B Casey Sadler knocking in 4 and CF Rusty Wallace and 3B Cody Michelson 3 each.
  • Washington CF Jared Wolfe bashes 3 homers [12] and drives in 4 as the Huskies win 6-3 at home to Army.
  • Left-fielder Dan Wiese smacks 2 home runs [13] and drives in 3 as Ole Miss takes a 6-1 road win from South Carolina. The Gamecocks earn a split thanks to a dogged 4-3 win on Friday.
  • Josh Calzaretta concedes just a run on two hits and strikes out 11 over 8 innings as G-Tech gets a 3-1 home win over Fullerton.
  • John Shaffer pitches a 7-hit shutout and fans 10 as Duke slips past OSU 1-0. The Blue Devils win another squeaker the next day, withstanding a late rally by the Cowboys to get home 3-2.
  • Mississippi State catcher Barry Arteaga bombs out 2 dingdongs [8] and brings home 5 to help the Bulldogs to a 7-3 road win at LSU.
  • A ripper game at Dan Law Field sees hosts TTU scrape home 12-11 against Oklahoma. Each team scores 4 in the 1st and it’s tied 7-7 after 5. The Sooners take a 11-9 lead into the bottom 9th only for the home side to rally and take the game into extra innings. Once again the visitors go ahead with a run in the 10th, once again they are unable to close it out as Dustin Beard walks it off with a 2-run single. Both LF Johnny Wilde and 1B Taylor Wood have 5 hits for Oklahoma, with Wood doubling three times, while Red Raiders first-baseman Ryan Salazar goes deep twice [19] and drives in 6. TTU wins again on Friday in a much more gentlemanly 2-1 affair, with Wood starring again for the vanquished Sooners, going 2-for-2 with 2 walks and a solo HR [12].
  • The Aggies don’t fare as well as their cross-state rivals as they blow a 4-run lead over the 8th and 9th to lose a 9-8 heartbreaker to Rice, wasting a fantastic effort by CF Adam Shepherd, who has 4 hits including a homer [13] and drives in 3 runs. Nor do UT, who are shut out on 5 hits by ORU’s Mat Thiessen in a 5-0 road loss, although the Longhorns do manage to pinch the Friday game 10-9 thanks to a Jason Diaz slam [20] in the top 9th..
  • BYU RF Azariah Sofyan’s 4 hits and 4 RBI counter Utah CF Brad Palmer’s 2 homers and 7 ribbies as the Cougars take an 18-13 slugfest for their 40th win of the campaign.
  • Shortstop Alan Greer hits 2 home runs [3] and catcher Rob Schreck walks it off with a 2-run double as UCSB sneaks past Northridge 5-4 at Caesar Uyesaka Field. The Matadors even the series 8-1 the following day, thanks mainly to catcher Jimmy Gueramo’s 4-5 / HR [4] / 5 RBI performance.

Friday June 23rd, 1950

BOX SCORES
  • Clarence Currie pitches a gem, shutting out Kansas on 6 hits with 7 Ks as Holy Cross sneak home 1-0.
  • Morgan Upton pitches a 4-hitter and catcher Jaxon Massa goes 3-for-4 with a homer [3] and 3 RBI as Brown routs Louisville 13-0 at Jim Patterson Stadium.
  • Third-baseman Jason Bodger has 5 hits with 2 doubles and a ribbie to help Yale get past Dartmouth 9-8, with the last of those hits a single that drives in the winning run.
  • LF Elias Helberg goes 5-for-5 with 2 doubles and 3 ribbies as his Virginia side gets a 13-10 home win against Nebraska.
  • 3B Mike Simpson has 4 hits including 2 two-baggers and drives in 5 as Oregon tear Wazzu apart by 16 to 3 at Cheney Stadium.
  • Two dingdongs [11] and 4 ribbies by RF Fielder Jones aren’t enough to stop AZ State drop a 6-4 road loss to Georgia.
  • Despite a 5-hit game by shortstop Tobias Delgado, Tulane still loses at home to Arizona by 12 to 9.

Saturday June 24th, 1950

  • An absolute belter as Navy visits Holy Cross, with the Midshipmen scoring 6 late to get a crucial 10-9 victory. It’s an expensive loss for the Crusaders, who lose starter Justin Hammond for the better part of a year after he tears his rotator cuff. Navy gets the Sunday decision as well as Harry Stovey’s 2 homers [18] power them to an 11-8 win, taking Tim Keefe to 11-0 for the season.

Sunday June 25th, 1950

BOX SCORES
  • Oregon smashes Maryland 18-8 to complete a road sweep, as CF Tim Jones and 2B Bryan Young each have 4 hits and Young and 3B Mike Simpson both drive in 3 runs. Terrapins catcher Ted Easterly has 5 hits including 2 triples along with 3 RBI for the beaten hosts.
  • Michigan State’s Ricardo Valle keeps the Bradley bats quiet with just a run on 3 hits as the Spartans sweep Bradley with a 6-1 win to throw the North Conference wide open.
  • 2 HR [11] and 5 RBI by RF Robby King leads Ball State to a convincing 12-6 win over a slumping Ohio State, sending the Buckeyes to their 6th loss in 7 games.
  • Yale’s Wally Berger homers twice [21] in a 7-1 win over Iowa.
  • A classic plays out at Kamine Stadium as hosts Lafayette score 3 in the 9th to tie their game with Michigan, but then lose it in 10 as the Wolverines score 2 and hang on for the 11-9 win. Nick Wells has two round-trippers [9] and 3 ribbies in a losing cause.
  • A two-hit CG gem with 7 Ks from Dustin Oliver gets Washington a 2-0 win over Northern Colorado.
  • The poor old Huskers seem destined to reassume the bottom ranking as they lose a couple of one-run games to USC over the weekend. The Sunday affair is a real heartbreaker as they lose it walkoff in 15 by 8 to 7 after scoring 2 in the 13th but failing to hold on.
  • Harvard demolishes Wazzu by a combined 30-6 to move to 47-17 and maintain their 4-game margin over Navy in the Northeast. The 13-0 Sunday win features a 4-hit shutout by Tyler Valencia and 5 ribsters by Bill Hendershot, who also bashes his 13th homer of the season.
  • RF Nick Schuler homers [17] and knocks in 5 as G-Tech beats MSU 7-3.
  • Joe Wyatt triples, hits two taters [8] and drives in 3 to power Houston to a 10-4 road win over TCU. The Cougars (34-30) have found form at the right time, with this their 7th win on the trot, but still trail OSU by 4 games in the Southwest Conference race after the Cowboys sneak past Pepperdine 6-5.
  • A pair of solo jacks [21] by 1B Joe Hauser help Florida get an 11-9 road win over Long Beach.

HML Player of the Week: Ted Easterly (Maryland) .600 / 3 HR / 10 RBI.

JDL Player of the Week: Taylor Wood (Oklahoma) .706 / 4 HR / 5 RBI.

Not too many serious injuries this week, which is good, although plenty of niggles and of course now anything even moderate can mean the season is done:
  • Saint Louis SP Red Ruffing: hamstring strain; 6 weeks
  • Fullerton RP Phil Copeland: rotator cuff; season
  • TTU SP Dick McBride: hamstring; season
  • SJ State 1B Eric Fraide: fractured finger; 5 weeks
  • Army SP Jimmy Bakula: forearm inflammation; 4 weeks
  • North Carolina LF Aaron Keyser: ruptured Achilles tendon; season

Only 6 weeks left in the season so I thought you might be interested in who’s leading the various categories:

Well the Crimson really put their foot down this week, going 4-0 and adding 3 full points to their rating score to push clear of the pack. 1950 Week 17 Recap

Thursday June 29th, 1950

BOX SCORES
  • Navy’s Alex Pearson shuts out Brown on 4 hits with 6 K as the Black Knights beat the Bears 3-0. LF Eric Mumford cracks his first homer of the season and drives in 5 runs the following day as Navy completes the sweep with a 13-7 win.
  • An absolute beaut of a game as Princeton travels to Cornell. Looking down and out for the count, the Tigers get up off the canvas and look to have stolen the game with a 6-run knockout punch in the 8th, only for the hosts to score a run in the home half and tie it. But the Tigers rally again with 2 in the top 12th and this time lock it down. Catcher Rob Radcliff has a huge game for the home side, bashing 2 home runs [6] and driving in 5, while Princeton 1B Ruben Ruiz also parks 2 [4] into the stands. The Tigers win the Friday game 7-1, as Tyler Korte has 2 trips and a dinger [9], and drives in 5.
  • A 5-hit, 13 K CG masterpiece by Ohio State’s Bill Hill gets the Buckeyes their 40th win of the season, 4-0 at home to Yale. Their 41st is more difficult to procure, requiring them to see off Bulldog Mat Davis’s 2 HR [14] / 4 RBI game and walk it off 9-8 in the 10th on a bases-loaded walk by 3B Bill Hinchman.
  • Wazzu CF Jake Stahl goes deep twice [13] and drives in a team-record 7 to help the Huskies to a 9-4 road win over Michigan State. Kenny Rose’s 2 dingers for the home side – his first of the year – are a wasted effort.
  • Minnesota continues its late resurgence as LF Bob Taylor’s 2 solo shots [6] help them overcome Holy Cross 9-4, the Gophers’ 5th straight win. The streak ends there, however, as Crusaders hurler Brian Hendricks shuts them out the next day on 3 hits in a 1-0 victory.
  • Saint Louis starter Vic Willis pitches a gem, one-hitting Western Michigan while fanning 13, to give the Billikens a 2-0 home win. They follow that up on Friday with a much tougher 7-6 win in 11, walking it off on an error.
  • Washington RF Baby Doll Jacobson’s 2 solo jacks [6] are the only runs his side can muster in a 7-2 road loss to Oregon State.
  • Georgia puts a good old-fashioned whuppin’ on Tennessee, romping home 18-0 as shortstop Matt Bowsher has 4 hits including his first 2 dingers of the year and knocks in 6, and 3B Eric Fontana goes 5-for-6 with 2 doubles, a homer [6] and 3 ribbies. Bulldogs pitcher Claude Hendrix allows just 3 hits over the full 9 and fans 11 for his 13th win. They punish the Vols again the next day, though not quite to the same extent, with an 8-1 win soured by the loss of starter Nick Strincevich for the season to a shoulder injury.
  • 6 hits and 3 RBI by first-baseman Dave Yeiser help LSU get a 10-8 road win at Rice. The Tigers follow this up with a tight win on Friday, scoring 5 runs late to pinch it 6-5.
  • Houston, paced by RF Dylan Roth’s 2 homers [9] and 3 ribbies, scrapes past Texas 8-7 for their 8th straight win. Another 2-homer effort [10] the next day by CF Joe Wyatt, who also drives in 5, gets the Cougars the sweep with an 8-4 triumph.
  • More fun in the sun at Phoenix Municipal Stadium as the Sun Devils and SJ State duke it out for a 27-run fiesta. Spartans RF Mark Wells clears the fence 3 times [16] and drives in a JDL record-tying 8 runs for the visitors (taking his consecutive hit streak to 20 games in the process), who win it 16-11. AZ State 3B Larry Bettencourt hits his 30th dinger of the campaign, while RF Fielder Jones also homers [12] and has 5 ribsters for the hosts, who fall to 25-40 with the loss. After that, the Sun Devils’ 4-3 Friday win is a veritable study in anti-climax.
  • San Diego State score 13 in the final two innings to stun Fresno 15-5 at Bob Bennett Stadium, with 2B Sam Lambert’s 4 RBI integral to their comeback win. The Bulldogs don’t make the same mistake the following day, nailing down a solid 10-2 win.
  • A homer [21] and 5 RBI by 3B Fred Thomas powers the Arizona offence in a 9-2 home win over BYU. Al Simmons goes yard twice [16] and has 3 RBI on Friday as BYU turns the tables with an 11-3 coast.

Friday June 30th, 1950

BOX SCORES
  • RF Robby King has a homer [12] and 6 RBI to help Ball State overpower Kent State 9-3.
  • FSU’s Matias Grange pitches a 6-hit shutout as the Seminoles beat Clemson 6-0 at Doug Kinsmore Stadium.
  • North Carolina comes from 7-2 down entering the 8th to squeak past Ole Miss by 9 to 7, wasting an excellent outing by Rebels SP Chris Eastman, who limits them to a run on 4 hits over those first 7.
  • After dropping the Thursday game 8-3, Auburn explodes for a bunch of runs to wallop Mississippi State 16-5. Jerrod Knospe goes 3-for-5 with a homer [13] and 4 RBI, while Jay Donohue’s 8th-inning grand slam [2] puts the Bulldogs away for good after they narrow the gap to 5 on a 3-run tater by SS Jeff Padua [4].
  • ORU CF Sam Chapman goes 3-for-4 with 2 home runs [20] and 4 RBI as the Golden Eagles thump LMU 10-1 at Page Stadium.

Saturday July 1st, 1950

BOX SCORES
  • Steve Renner has 4 hits including a triple and a home run [14] while driving in 2 as Maryland cruises to a 6-1 road win over Holy Cross.
  • 8 scoreless 4-hit innings by Randy Taylor lead Villanova to a 3-0 shutout win at Indiana. The Hoosiers pay them back in spades on Sunday with a 13-2 thrashing led by Cliff Heathcote’s 2 HR [15] / 6 RBI game.
  • GWU, like good sides do, keeps finding the way to win as they pip Virginia 7-6. The Colonials take a 2-1 lead into the 8th then fall behind 5-2, only to respond with 4 of their own to get their noses back in front. The Cavaliers tie it up with a run in the 9th, but the home side walks it off thanks to a run-scoring triple by Roberto Vazquez. They repeat the dose the next day in an enthralling contest that sees them score one in the 9th to tie it, concede and score one in the 11th to keep it alive, then walk it off in the 12th on a John Rollin single. Vazquez stars again in this one as both he [6] and Rollin [8] homer and drive in 4.
  • Harvard runs their win streak to 13 with a hard-fought 7-6 win against Michigan, despite Wolverines 3B Dan Godfrey going 3-for-4 with a dinger [9] and 4 driven in. They finally drop one the next day, although they nearly pull it out of the fire with runs in each of the last three innings before coming up short 7-6.
  • Another costly loss for Illinois, who let a 9th-inning 8-4 lead slip in their game against Cornell and end up losing it 9-8 in 10. That makes it 6 losses in their last 8 for the Illini, who find themselves in a 4-way tussle in the North Conference. One of those sides is Bradley, who also drop one they were expected to win, felled 6-3 at home by Minnesota. When Illinois drops their Sunday game 4-3 and Bradley wins 12-7 behind Ryuji Nago’s 2 homer [7] / 6 RBI and Amos Strunk’s 2 homer [2] / 4 RBI efforts, the Braves sit alone atop the conference by a single game.
  • SS Jamie Barry hits his first two home runs of the year and drives in 5 as Northern Colorado thrashes Wazzu by 10 to 2. The surging Bears smash them again on Sunday by 11 to 4 to move to 41-27, 3 games behind the sputtering Beavers – who lose both home games against Dartmouth, in the second of which they are shut out on 3 hits by Adam Schupbach – in the Northwest.
  • Jon Garboski’s 2 dingers [15] and 4 ribbies are instrumental in Georgia seeing off a dogged North Carolina by 11 to 9. He then doubles home the go-ahead runs in the Sunday game as the Bulldogs complete the sweep with a 4-2 victory.
  • SJ State 1B Fred Luderus goes yard twice [7] and drives in 4 in a 10-3 drubbing of NC State. Wolfpack catcher Yogi Berra hits 2 homers [4] and brings home 3 for the losing side. Berra goes deep again on Sunday as the Wolfpack square the series with a 7-4 win.
  • Auburn 2B Jerrod Knospe continues his hot run of form with 2 homers [15] and 4 RBI and Homer Smoot gets his 20th longball of the campaign, but it isn’t enough to stop the Tigers losing at home to Vandy by 10 to 9. Same goes for Baylor’s Jai Owens, who mashes two taters [5] and drives in 3 in a 7-4 home defeat to TCU and goes yard again the following day in another narrow loss for the Bears. Auburn’s Dale Alexander ups his home run tally for the season to 30 as his side evens the series with a 5-2 Sunday win.
  • Jim Hughes allows just one run on 4 hits over 8 as BYU sneaks past Santa Clara 2-1 at Stephen Schott Stadium. Their 16-5 massacre the next day is a far less stressful way of doing it, with Azariah Sofyan (4 hits / HR [3] / 4 RBI) and Brendan Poland (4-for-6 / 2 doubles / 3 RBI) starring for the Cougars, who now comfortably lead the Pacific Conference by 7 games and seem assured of post-season action.
  • Saturday ends up being a tough day all round for home teams, with the visitors winning 34 of the 50 games played by a combined margin of 75 runs.

Sunday July 2nd, 1950

BOX SCORES
  • Stanford’s freefall continues as the Cardinal lose their 9th straight, 11-5 at Louisville. The loss leaves them at 21-47 and precariously close to the dreaded #100 spot in the rankings.
  • After an 8-6 Saturday win, Richmond completes a road sweep when they embarrass Miami 10-0 behind a sterling effort by Justin Adham. The Spiders hurler goes 8+ and allows just 4 hits, while battery-mate Elijah Boateng chimes in with a homer [6] and 5 RBI.
  • The Ohio-Iowa game sees two of the league’s brightest prospects shine and go toe-to-toe, as Bobcats RF Harry Lumley has 4 hits including his 26th HR and drives in 5 to lead his side past the Hawkeyes 12-6. Iowa 3B Frankie Frisch does all he can for the home team, banging one out [15] and plating 4.
  • 2 homers [6] by SS Marcus Cameron aren’t enough to stop Washington from falling 8-7 to a dogged Nebraska.
  • Tim Keefe fans a team-record 18 hitters as navy puts away Berkeley 7-2.
  • Dustin Harris goes yard twice [12] and brings home 5 as The Citadel easily handles FSU 11-1.
  • South Carolina scores 7 in the 9th but still come up a run short as they lose at home 10-9 to Florida.
  • Mississippi State’s Wayne Bell doubles, bashes 2 homers [14] and drives in 3, but it is all in vain as his Bulldogs drop a close one to Rice, by 6 to 5.
  • Larry Bettencourt goes 4-for-4 and preserves his lead atop the JDL home run table with his 31st of the season as AZ State beats Utah 9-5.
  • 2B Chris County has 2 doubles and his 6th round-tripper of the season while driving in 5 as UNLV routs Arizona 20-5 at Hi Corbett Field. 1B Zach Alvarez also homers [17] and has 4 ribbies for the Rebels, who move to 33-35 with the win.
  • Two homers [15] and 4 ribsters by Sherry Magee help SD State get past Cal Poly 7-4 on the road.

HML Player of the Week: Tyler Korte (Princeton) .474 / 2 HR / 12 RBI.

1950 Week 17 Rankings

Any thoughts Harvard may have had of running away with the #1 spot were quietened by their Northeast conference rivals Navy this week. The Midshipmen rediscovered their mojo in a 4-0 showing that pushed them back up to #2 and narrowed the gap between them and the Crimson considerably. Meanwhile, ordinary weeks for Pepperdine, Oregon State and Illinois saw all three drop off the pace a bit, even though they each do retain their place in the Top 5. Some interesting moves just underneath them as both Northern Colorado and Tulane jumped 6 positions to 9 and 10 respectively. Georgia was one of the biggest ladders, with the Bulldogs returning to the official list for the first time since Week 8 with a 12 spot jump to #23. Princeton and Richmond were the biggest upward movers of all with 18-position jumps, although both still have plenty of ground to make up before appearing on this summary, I’m afraid. Still, on the way up they did get to wave at Iowa and Kansas, both of whom were decidedly headed in the other direction, falling 16 and 15 places. Minnesota continued their good form to climb further from the bottom, leaving LMU and Stanford as Nebraska’s two nearest targets in their quest to avoid the wooden spoon.

Top 25 teams as at end of ACBA Season 1950, Week 17 (Record / Points / Previous week’s ranking)

1950 Week 18 Recap

Thursday July 6th, 1950

BOX SCORES
  • Hofstra’s Bob Feller allows just one run over 8 and fans 15 in an 11-1 thrashing of Ball State.
  • Bill Hill pitches a 4-hit shutout and racks up 12 Ks in the Thursday game of the Ohio derby, with OSU cruising to a 5-0 road win over OU. Shortstop Kelly Bailey goes 4-for-4 with a double and a solo home run [9] for the Buckeyes, who sweep the series with a 3-2 win the next day as Bailey bashes out another one.
  • Iowa 1B Vince Benedict goes yard twice [4] while driving in 3 in a comfortable 10-3 win at Cincinnati. They double the dose on Friday, this time behind Frankie Frisch’s 2 dinger [17] / 3 ribster performance.
  • A crucial matchup between the two Michigan sides, both of whom are well in contention in the North Conference, sees the #17 Wolverines draw first blood on Thursday against with a commanding 14-4 win in which both RF Lance Allen and SS Sean Clemons drive in 3. The Spartans even it up with a 4-1 Friday win as Randy Reyes (2B / HR [22] / 2 RBI) leads the charge.
  • #8 GWU scores 2 in the top 9th to steal a key game from #11 Kent State. Nick Berg gives a strong performance on the mound, allowing one run on 4 hits over 8 to register his 10th win of the season and the Colonials’ 7th on the trot. The Golden Flashes get their own back with a tight 3-2 win on Friday.
  • With Harvard winning narrowly at Brown, Navy registers a 4-0 home win against Penn behind a dominant display by Alex Pearson, who allows just 6 hits over 8.2 scoreless. Midshipmen 1B Chris Ward belts 2 solo shots [3] to power the offence. But Navy falls further behind their conference rivals the next day when they lose 5-1 and Harvard continue on their merry way with a 15-4 demolition of Brown, as SS Chris Delago goes nuts with a homer [7] and 7 RBI.
  • 3B Milan Andrews homers [10] and drives in 5 as V-Tech beats Louisville 10-7, with Cardinals right-fielder Juan Villanueva bashing out two dingdongs [11] in a losing cause. A 10-3 Hokies win the next day – their 7th straight – comes at a huge cost, with hurler Joe Morrison lost for the season to a partially torn labrum.
  • Kansas State 1B Ricky Hernandez has a 5-hit game with a homer [10] and 3 RBI as the Wildcats sneak past Nebraska 6-5 in 10, winning it walkoff on an error by Huskers 3B Doug Mueller.
  • Army’s Al Pratt 3-hits Oregon with 10 strikeouts in a 5-0 road shutout win.
  • Oregon State fails to score for the second straight game and lose their 4th in a row, beaten 6-0 by Wazzu at Cheney Stadium. The Beavers’ once-commanding lead in the Northwest Conference has been whittled down to 2 games, with Northern Colorado looking like they’ll run right over them. The Week 21 matchup between these two should be a ripper.
  • Rice RF Dan McSkimming goes to town on Houston with a pair of 3-run doubles as the Owls get an 11-8 road win at Houston. The Cougars get the split, however, with a 2-0 Friday win thanks mainly to Mike Rafferty’s 2-hit gem.
  • A nip-and-tuck affair in the Lone Star State as A&M slips past UT 5-4 at Disch-Falk Field, with a 3-run homer [15] by Aggies RF Alex Burgos the key strike. Another nailbiter the next day sees the Longhorns turn the tables with a 2-1 win as TJ Cappella goes 7+ and allows just the one run on two hits and fans 9.

BOX SCORES
  • Villanova’s Frank Moats pitches 7 4-hit, shutout innings against Lafayette before being forced from the game when hit by a pitch. His Wildcats finish off his good work with a 2-0 home win.
  • Maryland wins a 14-11 slugfest against Purdue, despite Boilermakers catcher Billy Earle going yard twice [9] and driving in 4. 1B Dennis Fischer plays a big part in the Terrapins’ win, with two two-baggers and 4 ribbies.
  • A Nate Martignetti 4-hitter with 11 strikeouts gets Cornell a 4-0 road win at Yale.
  • 2 homers [12] and 4 RBI by Jamie Russo power Princeton to a 10-2 road thrashing of Dartmouth.
  • Gabriel Tijerina pitches Kansas to a 3-0 home win over the Irish, going the distance and allowing 5 hits while striking out 3.
  • A horror day for Tulane, as they not only lose their game at North Carolina by 3 to 2, but may well have lost gun CF Logan Neely for the season after he suffers an oblique strain.
  • Two solo dingers by RF Bobby Thomas aren’t enough to stop Duke dropping a tight one at home to NC State, with the Wolfpack emerging triumphant by 6 runs to 5.
  • Dean Vasquez pitches a 3-hit shutout, fanning 10, to get Florida past Clemson 3-0.
  • After a 6-1 win on Thursday, #16 TTU completes a key sweep over #13 OSU with a 3-0 shutout behind Bobby Shantz’s 4-hitter. Shantz also fans 13 Cowboys in an overwhelming display of power pitching
  • Mike Taylor goes on a 3-dinger [12] / 6 ribbie rampage as NM State beats AZ State 8-3.
  • Jake Howell has 4 hits including his 12th home run and 4 ribbies as Long Beach pummel SD State 17-2.
  • 2 homers [15] and 6 RBI by second-baseman Dan McGann leads Fullerton to a 13-4 home romp over LMU.
  • The Fresno-Santa Barbara game shows the importance of team over player, as two fantastic individual performances by Elias Martin (3-for 5 / 2 HR [8] / 4 RBI) and Miguel Colindres (5-for-5 / solo HR [1]) can’t stop the Gauchos falling 10-5 at home to the Bulldogs.

Saturday July 8th, 1950

BOX SCORES
  • Oregon State finds itself on the wrong end of a shutout for the third time in 4 games as they are blanked on 6 hits by Kent State and Peek-A-Boo Veach. Veach racks up 12 strikeouts and helps himself to a solo home run [6] as well to register his 11th win. The Beavers share the spoils with a 5-1 Sunday win as Jaylen Jackson goes deep twice [18] and Brett Bullock pitches a strong complete game, driving in two runs as well.
  • Indiana’s Ares Reeves one-hits Minnesota in a 3-0 home win.
  • RF Mark Lloyd has 4 hits including just his 2nd jack of the season and drives in 3, but his Army unit still falls to Dartmouth by 5 to 4 on a walkoff 2-run single by Matt Charbonneau.
  • 5 hits to Bill Mitchell and 3 ribbies each to Sam Vigorito and pitcher Frank Dwyer push Navy past Miami 9-3. The win closes the gap between them and Harvard in the Northeast to 3 games after the Crimson have a rare off-night and are shutout 3-0 at Richmond, the Spiders’ 7th straight win. When Navy wins again on Sunday and Harvard loses, that gap is back to 2.
  • Kansas ace Toad Ramsay outduels Purdue’s Casey Johnson in an exemplary display of pitching as the Jayhawks prevail 1-0. Both men go the distance and allow just two hits, with Ramsay fanning 17 to take his season total to an amazing 271 in 157 innings, the most by a stretch in either league. Another strong performance on the mound the next day by Bobby Voccio, who allows just one hit and one run over 8+, locks down the sweep with a 4-1 win.
  • In one of the key matchups of the weekend, #5 Illinois sneaks past #7 Bradley 1-0 as David Cearley throws 7 shutout innings. The Illini get the result in another tight one on Sunday, with their 12-inning 3-2 walkoff win leaving the two sides just one game apart at the crowded top of the North Conference.
  • USC CF Jonathan McInnis has 5 hits including 3 doubles and brings home 5 as the Trojans thrash Wazzu at Cheney Stadium.
  • In a battle involving two teams at the wrong end of the standings and rankings, Nick Mahnke’s 2 homers [9] and 5 RBI powers Stanford to a 7-3 home win over Nebraska.
  • An Ed Brandt 4-hit CG helps Stetson to a 4-0 home win over LMU. Brandt, who strikes out 13, moves to 7-7 with the win.
  • Gil Coan hits two homers [15], including a 10th-inning walkoff solo shot, while driving in 4 as LSU beats Alabama 6-5. Crimson Tide pitcher Bobby Mitchell fans 18 Tigers in a no-decision.
  • A&M upsets TTU at home in another all-Texas matchup, with the Aggies cruising to a 7-2 win behind CF Adam Shepherd’s 2 HR [16] / 3 RBI performance and a strong complete game by Kelly Wheeler. They pull off an unexpected sweep on Sunday with a 6-4 win that wastes a 2 HR [19] / 3 RBI effort by Red Raiders RF Jonathan Etheridge. Luckily for TTU, OSU also loses both of their games against BYU thereby keeping them in a tie for first in the congested Southwest conference race.
  • It takes Houston 16 innings and nearly 5 hours to get past SD State, literally walking it off on a bases-loaded pass to catcher Jason Thress. Aztecs 3B Chris Taiclet does all he can for the visitors, going solo deep twice [15]. The visitors even it up with a strong 10-4 Sunday win, with Sherry Magee homering twice [18] and knocking in 6.
  • G-Tech scores a pair in each of the final three innings to come back from 5-1 down after 8 to beat Oklahoma 7-5 in 10. Catcher Justin Johnson plays a huge role in the late rally, bombing out homers in both the 9th and 10th to give him 8 for the campaign.
  • A one-hitter with 9 strikeouts by John Bosley gets New Mexico a 2-0 home win over Arizona.
  • Pepperdine seem to have come to a complete stop as they lose their 4th straight game, shut out 7-0 at home by Ole Miss. Rebels pitcher Allen Cedras gives them 8+ scoreless innings for the win, while Mike MacDonell homers [8] and drives in 4. The Waves stop the rot on Sunday with a much-improved 7-1 win behind an excellent outing from Tyler Backer.
  • On a day filled with quality performances on the mound, George Cuppy’s 3-hit shutout with 11 K is another standout, as his San Diego Toreros get a 7-0 road win over UCSB.

Sunday July 9th, 1950

BOX SCORES
  • A 2 HR [10] / 4 RBI game by Danny Hernandez leads Maryland to a 9-3 home win over Ball State.
  • Northern Colorado makes it 8 straight with a dramatic 6-5 win over Virginia. Ricky Gonzalez is the walkoff hero, winning it with an RBI single in the 14th to get the Bears home 6 to 5.
  • Catcher Doug Hotham goes 3-for-5 with a double and a homer [2] as LMU gives Stetson a beating at home. The 10-2 loss costs the Hatters the chance to draw level at the top of the South conference after leaders Tulane are beaten 8-0 by AZ State and Jayden King, who shuts out the Green Wave on 4 hits while fanning 7.
  • Danny Garofalo cracks his 7th dinger of the season as drives in 6 as Wake Forest beat The Citadel 12-5 at David F. Couch Ballpark.
  • NM State pounds MSU with 20 hits in a 15-4 cakewalk. Right-fielder Mike Taylor leads the way for the Aggies with 5 hits including 2 home runs [14] and 4 RBI, while 1B Steve Cleland also homers [5] and drives in 3 and 2B Avery Pohlkamp has 3 hits and 3 ribbies.
  • An absolute purler at J.L. Johnson Stadium sees Baylor and ORU duke it out for 13 thrilling innings. Baylor scores 5 in the 8th to send the game into extra innings tied at 7, then the teams exchange a run in the 11th. ORU 1B David Martinez eventually strikes the decisive blow in the bottom 13th, with his walkoff single winning it for the Golden Eagles 9-8.
  • SJ State’s Jim Mollahan keeps Rice scoreless on 2 hits over 8 while striking out 9 as the Spartans get a 2-0 home win.

HML Player of the Week: Nick Mahnke (Stanford) .533 / 3 HR / 9 RBI.

JDL Player of the Week: Mike Taylor (New Mexico State) .450 / 6 HR / 11 RBI.

Injury news for this week:
  • North Carolina CL Arturo Rivera: oblique strain; 5 weeks
  • Mizzou 2B Alan Saylor: herniated neck disc; 2-3 weeks
  • Nevada SS Geoff Stallings: fractured hand; season
  • Bradley 2B Walt Bartunek: partially torn labrum; season
  • Bradley 1B Matt Alexander: partially torn labrum; season
  • Michigan State SP Ricardo Valle: torn elbow ligament; season (11-12 months)

With just four weeks of the regular season remaining, I think an update on the conference title races is in order.

HORACE MANN LEAGUE

ATLANTIC: GWU still looks in control, leading V-Tech by 6 games.

EAST: Ohio State leads Kent State by 2, with Lafa another 2 behind them.

NORTH: One of the closer conferences, with just 2 games separating the top 4 teams: Bradley (45-27); Illinois (44-28); Michigan (43-29); and Hofstra (43-29).

NORTHEAST: Down to Harvard and Navy here, with the Crimson 2 games to the good at the end of this week. No real pressure on either, as the runner-up is all but guaranteed of a Wild Card spot.

NORTHWEST: Oregon State and Northern Colorado seem to have this one between them, with the Beavers currently one in front. Oregon, a further 4 back, are still in with a slim chance.

JOHN DEWEY LEAGUE

PACIFIC: BYU look home and hosed, 7 up on San Jose State.

SOUTH: Tulane and Stetson look set to take this right down to the wire, with the Green Wave a game up for now. FSU, 5 games off the lead, will need to get a hurry on.

SOUTHEAST: Still completely up for grabs, with all but Tennessee and Ole Miss within 5 games.

SOUTHWEST: Oklahoma State have come right back to the pack, meaning this one is well up for grabs with 5 teams within 2 games of each other.

WEST: Pepperdine have got a dose of the wobbles, leaving the door slightly ajar for Fresno (5 GB) and Cal Poly (6 GB).

1950 Week 18 Rankings

Nothing is decided and everything – both in the standings and rankings – is still up for grabs as we enter the final four weeks of this fascinating inaugural ACBA season. A 2-2 week for Harvard has allowed the pointy end of this list to bunch right up again, with Navy closing the gap to just over a point. No other changes of note to speak of in the Top 10 with most sides marking time. Fresno continued its upward march with a 5-spot jump to a season-high #15, while OSU’s rocky road of late saw them drop 8 to #21 thanks to an 0-4 week. New Mexico (73 to 59) and San Diego State (64 to 50) were the two biggest ladders with 14-spot jumps, while Arizona’s wretched campaign plumbed new depts as they dropped 17 places to 74th, a far cry from their Week 4 ranking of #18. At the other end, LMU seems Nebraska’s only hope of avoiding the wooden spoon, with the Lions just a quarter-point to the good.

Top 25 teams as at end of ACBA Season 1950, Week 18 (Record / Points / Previous week’s ranking)

1950 Week 19 Recap

Please note all ACBA rosters were expanded to 35 players on 07/10.

Thursday July 13th, 1950

BOX SCORES
  • Minnesota hurler Bobby Rios carries a no-no into the 9th before his bid is broken up. The Golden Gophers win all the same, 2-1 at home to Hofstra. Rios fans 13 while his opponent Bob Feller mows down a dozen.
  • Kent State’s Danny Hoffman triples, homers [21] and drives in 5 in a 9-3 road win over Purdue. The Boilermakers come up short again on Friday, as Lee Viau allows just one earned run and fans 14 over the full 9 but still has to cop the 2-1 loss.
  • Penn’s Noodles Hahn is at his very best, blanking Ohio with a two-hit / 15 K CG as the Quakers win 3-0.
  • Greg Lemmon goes one better, one-hitting Kansas as Dartmouth romps it in 13-0. Big Green RF Ben Fleck leads the bats with a 4-4 / 2 double / 2 HR [17] / 4 RBI effort, while CF Pat Riter also brings home 4. Javier Bucio allows just two hits over 8 scoreless on Friday as Dartmouth gets home 1-0 on a walkoff walk.
  • Not a good day for the Kansan bats, as KSU is shut out on 3 hits by Isaiah Blue in a 3-0 loss to Virginia.
  • UCLA’s Logan Manley shuts out Ohio State on 3 hits over 8 and fans 9 as the Bruins move to 40-33 with a 2-0 road win.
  • Nick Manco goes 5-for-6 and Bill Mitchell has 3 doubles and 3 ribbies as Navy beats Saint Louis 14-6 at Billiken Sports Center. With Harvard falling to their third straight loss the Midshipmen now trail them by just one game in the Northeast, a race that looked all but over a week earlier. Harvard’s funk deepens Friday as they are shut out 5-0 by Holy Cross behind a strong outing by Brian Hendricks, but Navy also loses 6-5.
  • After starter Joe Paris is forced from the game with back tightness, Mike Hawkins allows just one hit over 6+ innings in relief to lead Bradley to a 9-0 cakewalk over Western Michigan. Illinois keeps within a game in the North with a 6-3 home win over Northern Colorado, who lose ace Jon Evans for the remainder of the regular season to elbow inflammation. Friday sees both teams victorious again, with the Illini’s 2-0 win notable for a superb two-hitter with a club-record 17 K by Doc Amole.
  • A 2-dinger [10] / 4 RBI game by LF Noah Perry nets Nebraska just their 21st win of a tough season, 6-4 at home to Wazzu.
  • Washington’s Jesse Wolff allows a run on 2 hits over 8 strong innings only for the pitcher relieving him to vulture the win, giving up 2 runs in the top 9th to let Oregon tie it before the Cougars walk it off courtesy of a Jamie Westerfield single.
  • USC puts a serious dent in Michigan’s playoff aspirations with a 12-0 flogging behind a Jorge Cholico two-hitter. 1B Dustin Emig drives in 4 for the Trojans. The Wolverines bounce back with a 6-2 Friday win as shortstop Sean Clemons goes 4-for-5 with a double, a triple and 3 ribsters.
  • Both Pepperdine’s Frank Smith and The Citadel’s David Carlson give their side 9 scoreless innings and strike out a bunch in a game ultimately won 3-1 in 10 innings by the visiting Waves. The two put on another cracker the next day, with the home side squaring the ledger 3-2 in 10 again on a walkoff single by Bulldogs catcher Kyle Franz as starter Pete Mills allows just two hits and one run over 8.
  • SJ State’s Fred Luderus triples, goes yard twice [10] and drives in 3 as the visiting Spartans whack South Carolina 12-2.
  • A 9th-inning grand slam (giving him 6 RBI for the game) by Joe Hauser is the decisive strike in Florida’s 9-5 win at Tennessee.
  • With only one game separating the top 4 teams in the Southwest, every win is crucial. None more so than Texas Tech’s 12-inning 7-6 road win over Baylor, which keeps them in a tie at the top with OSU. A solo tater [3] by David Gallardo gets the Red Raiders home. A Bobby Shantz 3-hit / 14 K masterpiece on Friday gets TTU a 12-0 win and road sweep.
  • A Chad Hanson 4-hit shutout with 7 K guides SD State to a 4-0 home win over Northridge. The Matadors square it up on Friday with an 11-2 cakewalk as Manuel Contreras bashes 2 solo homers [3] and Jeff Dutka also goes yard [11] and drives in 6.
  • Kevin Peper pitches 7+ scoreless and drives in 4 runs to help San Diego get past Mississippi State 10-2.
  • A Hooks Wiltse 3-hitter with 10 K and Leonardo Molina’s homer [11] plus 5 ribbies push Santa Clara to a comfortable 7-0 win over UT. The two sides put on a Friday classic with the Broncos eventually winning it 13-10 thanks in a large part to Matt Wicht’s 5 RBI effort.

Friday July 14th, 1950

BOX SCORES
  • Brian Webber homers twice [16] and Marvin Williams gives 8+ strong innings as Miami take a 6-1 road win from Louisville.
  • A nightmare series for GWU at home to V-Tech as they follow up a 12-8 Thursday loss with a pitiful 13-1 capitulation on Friday. LF Ben Dodd cracks his first 2 dingers of the season and drives in 5 to power the Hokies offence.
  • Two homers [12] and 4 ribbies by Danny Hernandez helps Maryland squeeze past Brown 8-6.
  • Clemson 3B Matt Terry goes double deep [8] and drives in 6 as the Tigers cruise to a 9-1 home win over Wake Forest. Jonathan Mooneyhan is fantastic for the hosts as he limits the Demon Deacons to three hits in a CG win.
  • Shortstop Chick Fulmer doubles, triples, and brings in 5 as Fullerton knocks off LSU 6-2 at Alex Box Stadium.
  • Johnny Wilde has a 5-hit game with 2 RBI as Oklahoma withstand a late rally by TCU to win it 9-6.
  • AZ State are the epitome of futility as they are shut out 11-0 by ORU and Curt Barnett, who pitches 8 innings of three-hit ball and fans 8.
  • UCSB’s Gus Krock shuts out Cal Poly on 8 hits and strikes out a dozen in a 3-0 road win for the Gauchos.

Saturday July 15th, 1950

BOX SCORES
  • A disastrous day all round for Hofstra as they not only lose 3-1 to North Conference rivals Illinois with David Cearley keeping the Dutchmen’s increasingly inconsistent bats quiet over 8+ strong innings, but also lose pitcher Hal Carlson for the season after he blows out his elbow. The Sunday game is nothing short of incredible as Hofstra overcome 5 errors to lead it 4-3 with two out in the bottom 9th, only for closer Ed Willett to give up his first run and HR of the season to Evan Baranowski [7] and then his second of the season to Justin Browning [12], giving the Illini a walkoff 5-4 win. John Peters went deep twice [14] for the Dutchmen in a loss that has almost certainly put paid to their post-season dream.
  • Nate Joseph has 4 hits and 4 ribbies as Indiana takes care of Penn 6-4 at Meiklejohn Stadium. The Quakers even the series Sunday with Steve Lowery’s 2 HR [4] / 4 RBI game a big factor.
  • Another dominant outing by Kansas ace Toad Ramsey, who hurls a 4-hit CG with 14 strikeouts to lead his Jayhawks past hosts Michigan State 7-1. The win takes Ramsay to 16-2.
  • Harvard finally puts one in the W column with a tight 8-7 victory at Army. Black Knights shortstop Mark Raines does all he can to stop them, racking up 5 hits including a double and a solo homer [8], but the Crimson hang on for grim death and get there in the end. A 6-3 Army loss to Minnesota despite two homers by Harry Stovey [20] stretches their lead in the Northeast back to 2 games. Stovey goes deep again the next day and Cory Cadieux drives in 5 and homers as well [8] as the Midshipmen match Harvard’s 5-2 win with a 13-0 demolition job that sees ace Tim Keefe pitch a 6-hitter and keep his perfect season alive at 14-0.
  • Clarence Currie shuts out Wazzu on 3 hits to lead Holy Cross to a 3-0 home win. The Cougars’ bats stay oh so quiet on Sunday as well, managing just 4 hits and whiffing 10 times against a dominant Jeff Carter in an 8-0 whitewash.
  • Well you can’t accuse Tony Lazzeri of not pulling (pooshing?) his weight in this horror season for Nebraska, and he comes through again with 2 dingers – taking his total to 26 for the season – and 3 RBI as the Huskers spank fellow languishers Berkeley 13-3 at Haymarket Park. A 6-2 Sunday win would give Huskers fans hope that their boys might actually avoid the bottom ranking.
  • A Vic Willis 4-hitter with 14 strikeouts earns Saint Louis a tight 1-0 home win over Brown. The Billikens then pull the Sunday game out of the fire with 3 in the 9th to give them a walkoff win on a double by CF Miguel Aguilar.
  • Fullerton’s Amadeo Grueser pitches 8+ quality innings and helps his own cause with 3 hits and 4 RBI in a convincing 9-2 road win over The Citadel.
  • Two homers [7] and 3 ribsters by LF Heriberto Franco power UT to a 7-4 win at Tennessee.
  • Justin Dowers doubles and then wins it with a walkoff 3-run homer [2] as North Carolina gets past FSU 9-7, with 7 of the Tarheels’ runs coming in the final three innings. The Seminoles get their revenge on Sunday, scoring one in the top 9th that holds up in a 5-4 win.
  • Sadie McMahon sparkles with an 8 K two-hitter as G-Tech beats T-Tech 1-0. That scoreline is reversed the following day as Christian Bock shuts out the Yellow Jackets on 4 hits to keep TTU within a game of OSU in the Southwest.
  • Alabama keeps its playoff aspirations alive with a 3-0 win over Ole Miss, as ace Bobby Mitchell shines in a CG 5-hit shutout, fanning 13 along the way. They win again on Sunday to be just one game out of the three-way tie atop the conference.
  • Sergio Meza’s 2 solo shots [3] and a fine 8-inning performance by Fred Beebe are all NM State needs to get them over the top 3-2 at Arizona.
  • Bill Pritchett allows a run on 3 hits over 9 and Chris Wilson bombs out 2 HR [18] as Cal Poly beats LMU 5-1. The Lions roar back on Sunday, smashing the Mustangs 17-2. Nick Ford stars with both bat and ball, pitching scoreless and driving in 4 runs.
  • Leonidas Guillot shuts out Nevada on 5 hits with 12 strikeouts as Vandy ekes out a 3-0 road win.

Sunday July 16th, 1950

BOX SCORES
  • Both CF Wally Berger [27] and 2B Randy Rosati [6] go yard twice to help Yale see off Lafa 9-7 at Kamine Stadium.
  • Crisis stations for GWU as they drop their 4th straight, 5-4 at home to Notre Dame. The loss cuts the Colonials’ lead over the Irish in the Atlantic to 3 games with 12 to play.
  • KSU’s Darnell Hughes mashes two taters [17] and drives in 4 in an 8-5 road win over Mizzou.
  • Justin Adham twirls a 3-hitter as Richmond shuts out Washington 3-0 at Husky Ballpark.
  • Shortstop John Knight homers twice to move into a tie with teammate Larry Bettencourt atop the JDL home run leaderboard, and Jayden King shuts out South Carolina on 4 hits with 9 K as AZ State win 4-0 on the road.
  • George Burns hits 2 solo dingers [21] and Mike Briggs has 4 hits including 3 doubles as Texas A&M keep themselves right in the hot Southwest race with a 12-8 win over Duke. It is their 6th straight and they remain tied with TTU just one back of Oklahoma State.
  • In a Sunday Funday special, Florida comes back from 8-1 down after 4 to nip LSU 14-10, with first-baseman Joe Hauser going yard twice [28] and adding 7 ribsters to his total to put it at 89, just 3 behind Texas RF Jason Diaz.
  • Sherry Magee has 2 HR [21] and 4 RBI and Nick Bruton goes 4-for-5 with a solo shot [6] to help SD State get a 9-5 home win over SJ State.
  • Stewie Afshari’s big night – double / HR [10] / 6 RBI – leads the way as Santa Clara easily disposes of Houston by 9 to 2.

HML Player of the Week: Dave Bancroft (Cincinnati) .455 / 2 HR / 8 RBI.

JDL Player of the Week: Johnny Wilde (Oklahoma) .714 / 1 HR / 5 RBI.

Injury news for this week:
  • Northern Colorado SP Jon Evans: elbow inflammation; 3 weeks
  • Ole Miss SP Alan Cedras: shoulder inflammation; season

1950 Week 19 Rankings

A bit of movement at the upper echelon of the official rankings this week, although not at #1 after Harvard recovered from losing their Thursday and Friday games to win both on the weekend and regain the top spot, albeit with a narrower margin. Positions 2 thru 7 remain incredibly bunched and we should see jockeying for those positions until the very end but it looks like it will take something extraordinary to happen for them to catch the breakaway two. Notre Dame are a notable climber this week as they press for a spot in the playoffs, with the Irish jumping 11 to #23, their first appearance of the season on the official list. Same goes for A&M, who jumped 8 to a season-high #18. Alabama is another making a charge just at the right time, and they jumped 9 spots this week to sit at #33. Nebraska has leapfrogged LMU down among the dead men, but this race, too, looks like going down to the wire.

Top 25 teams as at end of ACBA Season 1950, Week 19 (Record / Points / Previous week’s ranking)
  1. Harvard Crimson 54-22; 36.29 (1)

1950 Week 20 Recap

Please note all ACBA rosters were expanded to 35 players on 07/10.

Thursday July 20th, 1950

BOX SCORES
  • Western Michigan shortstop Eric Vondran doubles, homers [10] and drives in 5 to help the Broncos get over the top of Maryland 10-6. Terrapins catcher Ted Easterly continues his excellent season, knocking out his 21st homer and driving in 3.
  • Washington’s Jesse Wolff pitches 5 no-hit innings against Miami before a rain delay of over an hour ruins his chance at completing the feat. Leading 1-0 at that point, the Huskies would proceed to give up 5 runs over the subsequent two innings and eventually lose the game 5-3. On Friday, Marvin Williams pitches a two-hitter with 9 strikeouts as the Redhawks complete the sweep with a 1-0 win.
  • Phil Angeleri pitches 8 quality innings and EC Coverrubias walks it off with a single in a 2-1 Yale win over Illinois. The loss doesn’t cost the Illini, however, as North Conference rivals Bradley also loses 8-2 at UCLA, as do third-placed Michigan and fourth-placed Hofstra. Their 6-5 Friday loss does cost them, however, as Bradley beats UCLA 2-1 to move one game clear.
  • Nic Swahn pitches 8 innings of 2-hit shutout ball to give Richmond a 1-0 win over Army. The result is reversed the following day as John Ekramy pitches a 6-hit shutout in a 3-0 win for the Black Knights.
  • It takes a whopping 5 hours to separate Indiana and Columbia, the latter of whom eventually wins 6-5 on a Stephen Emmerich single in the top of the 17th. Their Friday game is an entirely different beast as the two sides combine for 30 hits in a 15-9 win for the Lions.
  • A 5-for-5 game by LF Ian Baker isn’t enough to stop Saint Louis dropping a tight one to Oregon State by a score of 6 to 5. They go on to lose the Friday contest by the same scoreline despite Nick Meraz’s 2 HR [8] / 4 RBI game.
  • Promising outfielder Zack Wheat doubles twice, homers [3] and brings home 4 to lead Kent State to a key 6-2 road win at Northern Colorado. The Bears earn a split with a hard-fought 5-3 Friday win.
  • Greg Lemmon allows just one hit and one unearned run over 8 as Dartmouth beats Wazzu 4-1 at Cheney Stadium.
  • Stetson’s late-season capitulation continues as they surrender an early 7-1 lead to eventually fall to Cal Poly 9-8. It is the Hatters’ sixth straight loss and greatly endangers their hopes of making the playoffs, leaving them 5 adrift of Tulane in the South Conference and in a bunch one game out of the final wild card spot. A 6-2 Friday loss only deepens their predicament.
  • Oklahoma’s Carl Lundgren shuts out Duke on 9 hits and fans 10 in a 3-0 road win for the Sooners. The Blue Devils square the ledger the following day, overcoming a 2 HR [9] effort by Dusty Muntz to get an 8-6 result.
  • A 7-hit / 8 K shutout by Matt Muche helps get NC State a 4-0 win at home over SD State.
  • Zach Dye strikes out a club-record 16 LSU hitters as TTU continue their late-season charge with a 6-2 home win that keeps them tied with OSU atop the Southwest, just a game ahead of Rice and A&M.
  • A Ryan LaRoche 5-hit shutout gives BYU their 50th win as they sneak past Houston 1-0 at Schroeder Park.
  • RF Matt Fuller cracks his 20th homer and drives in 5 but still his UNLV side loses 11-8 to Ole Miss.
  • Sean Jenson homers [14] and drives in 5 as North Carolina cruises to a 10-4 win at Vandy. Joe Garagiola mashes 2 taters [17] for the Commodores in a losing cause.
  • Auburn’s Dale Alexander joins AZ State duo Larry Bettencourt and John Knight at the top of the JDL HR table when he knocks out his 32nd round-tripper and has 5 RBI in a 10-5 win over Northridge. He takes sole possession of the lead with another dinger on Friday as the Sun Devils bats go completely missing in a 12-0 drubbing.
  • An inordinate amount of 1-0 games today. Long Beach joins the list with a win by that scoreline over Utah behind a fine 3-hit shutout by Mike Greenwood. The 49ers take another close one on Friday, winning 3-2 in 13 with a solo shot [15] by Xavier Smith the decisive blow and Paul Meloan the PotG with 5 hits including his first homer of the campaign.
  • Jack Stivetts blanks NM State on 5 hits and sets a new club mark with 17 as TCU whitewashes the Aggies 9-0 at Presley Askew Field. Pepperdine’s Frank Smith matches that total, also setting a new record for his school as the Waves cruise to a 7-1 victory over Alabama.

Friday July 21st, 1950

BOX SCORES
  • Hofstra’s Adam Smith goes the distance allowing just an unearned run on two hits with 6 K as the Dutchmen win at Kansas by 5 to 1.
  • Navy blanks Ball State 13-0 behind a strong performance by Philip Palmer, who allows just two hits over 7+ scoreless. Harry Stovey and Sam Vigorito each has three hits and three RBI for the Midshipmen, who close the gap to one game in the Northeast after Harvard falls at home to Purdue 3-1.
  • Ray Demmitt homers twice [23] and drives in 3 for Lafa in a 6-2 road win over Michigan State.
  • An Emmanuel Duhon 4-hit shutout leads Princeton to a 2-0 road win over Notre Dame.
  • Orval Overall allows just a solo homer and fans 11 over 8+ as Penn overcomes Holy Cross 4-1.
  • USC come back from the dead, scoring all of their runs in the bottom 8th to nip Cornell 7-6.
  • Two homers [13] and 3 ribbies by catcher Mike Larson and a strong CG performance by Joe Benz power South Carolina to an 8-1 home win over G-Tech.
  • A disastrous day in every respect for TTU as, in the course of losing their home game against LSU 5-1, they lose gun pitcher Bobby Shantz for what’s left of this season and all of next to a torn UCL.
  • A&M do their playoff hopes no harm with a 16-4 smashing of Georgia. CF Adam Shepherd goes deep twice [19] and knocks in 5 to lead the offence, while George Burns has 3 hits and 4 ribbies.
  • The game between Tulane and hosts Rice stays scoreless thru 14 before a flurry of runs sees the Green Wave emerge victorious by 4 to 2 thanks to a grand slam [16] by Jody Ognibene. Mike Reinoehl pitches 9 one-hit shutout innings for the visitors, who now look home in the South Conference with a 6-game lead over Stetson with 10 to play.
  • SJ State 2B MJ Gardner ties the JDL record with 8 RBI, 4 of which come in a grand slam [12], as the Spartans thrash Baylor 15-3.
  • Dan Hoffman hits 2 taters [13] and drives in 3 of his side’s 4 runs as OSU wins 4-3 at San Diego.
  • Curt Barnett pitches a 4-hitter in a 4-0 ORU road win over UCSB.
  • Amazingly after all that, both the home and away sides scored 224 total runs on the day.

Saturday July 22nd, 1950

BOX SCORES
  • Ohio scores 4 in the bottom 9th to tie their game with Kent State at 7, only to give up 2 in the top 10th and lose by that margin.
  • 2B Rocky Kushnir doubles, homers [5] and drives in 4 to help V-Tech earn bragging rights with a 10-3 win over rivals Virginia. They cement those with a comfortable 9-2 Sunday win, as Kushnir again goes deep and Heath Bruggeman pitches a strong complete game.
  • Zachary Ireland pitches a 5-hit shutout with 7 strikeouts as Michigan State blanks Army 8-0.
  • Columbia and Navy play the longest game so far in the ACBA both in terms of duration and innings, with the Lions eventually scoring 3 in the top 20th to win 8-5 after 6 hours and 45 minutes. Navy’s disappointment is exacerbated when Harvard escapes with 2 in the 9th to steal a 5-4 home win against Cornell, walking it off on a Ben Gentry two-out single. The Midshipmen lose again Sunday by 3 to 2, with Tim Keefe dropping his first decision of the season, but Harvard also loses its game with Cornell 7-5 as LF Bert Babineau runs amok with 3 hits including a double and 4 RBI.
  • Yale’s Wally Berger takes his season tally to 30 with 2 dingers while driving in 4 runs as the Bulldogs beat Princeton 8-3 at Yale Field.
  • A 4-hitter with 13 Ks by Dupee Shaw leads Penn to a 3-0 win over Nebraska.
  • A heavyweight matchup between to combatants with playoff ambitions ends up a lopsided affair as Bradley knocks out Ohio State 5-0 behind a 6-hit shutout performance by Josh Jetton. Illinois’ 5-2 win at Indiana keeps the gap between the two in the North at one game, with the Illini’s David Cearley’s strong pitching key to the result. A 5-2 Sunday win for the Braves coupled with an Illinois walkoff loss puts them in the box seat once more.
  • Tony Gaitan shuts out Western Michigan on 3 hits in a 9-0 road win for Minnesota.
  • A dominant performance by Mellie Wolfgang in which he shuts out KSU on two hits and fans 6 leads Richmond to an 8-0 home win over the Wildcats.
  • Ball State scores all of its runs over the final two innings to steal a 6-5 win at Saint Louis. The Cardinals sweep the series with a 12-1 cakewalk on Sunday behind a three-hit CG by Eddie Baldwin.
  • Strong mound-work by Antonio Suarez and a homer [5] / 3 ribbie performance from catcher Victor Olmedo gets Wazzu home 6-2 in the Washington Derby against UW. The Huskies square the series the following day with a dour 5-3 victory.
  • Two dingers [11] and 4 ribsters by catcher Justin Johnson help get G-Tech get a 9-4 road win at NC State.
  • Bobby Mitchell strikes out 16 in a 3-hit CG sparkler as Alabama thumps The Citadel 11-0 at Joseph Riley Park. An 8-4 Sunday win thanks mainly to a 6-run 8th keeps the Tide moving in the right direction and within just 2 games of the Southeast-leading Georgia Bulldogs.
  • A ripper in the Lone Star State as TTU escapes with a lucky, vital 4-3 home win in 10 over TCU. Pinch-hitter Tailer Serrano is the walkoff hero for the Red Raiders, singling in the winning run with one out to keep T-Tech just a game behind OSU in the Southwest. A&M drop their home clash with Cal Poly 4-2 to fall a game behind their intrastate rivals. Amazingly, the Sunday game between the two Texan schools ends with exactly the same scoreline as the previous day, with Texas Tech again winning 4-3 in 10, this time on a wild pitch, and another A&M loss puts them in deep trouble standings-wise in the shadows of the post.
  • Sam O’Donnell allows a solitary hit over 8 scoreless as Houston wallops Long Beach 9-0 at Schroeder Park.
  • Claude Hendrix pitches a 4-hitter with a dozen Ks and knocks out a homer [2] to boot as Georgia easily overcomes Ole Miss 8-0.
  • A huge game for relatively unsung LF Justin Dowers, who goes yard 3 times [5] while driving in 6 as North Carolina accounts for AZ State 8-3.

Sunday July 23rd, 1950

BOX SCORES
  • Cincinnati’s Dave Bancroft has a double, 2 homers [23], and 4 ribbies to help lead the Bearcats past Dartmouth 9-4.
  • Villanova RF Justin Hicken has two solo shots [14] as the Wildcats beat Purdue 7-1 in Plymouth.
  • Been a while since we had a Sunday Funday game, but Maryland and Kansas certainly provide one as they combine for 34 hits in a 14-13 win for the visiting Terrapins. Maryland catcher Ted Easterly further advances his MVP claims with a huge game, doubling three times, tripling and driving in 4, while Steve Renner has 3 hits and 4 ribbies.
  • USC’s Jason Wiseman limits GWU to 4 hits as the Trojans get a 5-1 home win.
  • Stetson finally snaps its losing streak at 8 games with an 8-4 home win over FSU, but the Hatters may have left their run a bit late as they remain a game out of the Wild Card spot with 8 to play.
  • Jody Ognibene goes downtown twice [18] and knocks in 4 as Tulane gets past Wake Forest 8-4 at David F. Couch Ballpark.
  • Dustin Porter has a double, a homer [12], and 5 RBI to power the Tennessee offence as they just get past Vandy 5-4 at Hawkins Field.
  • CF Sam Chapman stars with 2 homers [23] and 5 ribbies as ORU beats Auburn 9-5.
  • 2 dingers [31] by first-baseman Joe Hauser aren’t enough to stop Florida dropping one 9-7 at MSU. Bulldogs LF Colby Pass has a run-scoring walk and a grand slam 5] for the victorious hosts.
  • LMU right-fielder Aaron Fowler has 3 doubles and 6 ribsters as the Lions take an easy 12-5 home win over Fresno.

HML Player of the Week: Ted Easterly (Maryland) .556 / 2 HR / 10 RBI.

JDL Player of the Week: Jimmy Williams (Mississippi State) .538 / 3 HR / 7 RBI.

1950 Week 20 Rankings

The antepenultimate ratings for 1950 see little change of note. Both Harvard and Navy had 2-2 weeks with the Midshipmen closing the gap a smidge. The big mover up in the lofty section was Oregon State, who moved to #3 with a blemish-free week, but still look just a bit too far away to challenge the top 2 – unless they fall in a heap. As I said, little else to report other than UCLA making its first appearance in the official list with a six-spot jump to #20, and V-Tech back in for the first time since Week 9. Sorry to report, Huskers fans, but your charges slipped back into bottom spot once again after a disastrous showing. And I fear it looks terminal this time, with a full three ratings points separating them from #99 LMU.

Top 25 teams as at end of ACBA Season 1950, Week 20 (Record / Points / Previous week’s ranking)
  1. Harvard Crimson 56-24; 36.10 (1)

1950 Week 21 Recap

Please note all ACBA rosters were expanded to 35 players on 07/10.

Thursday July 27th, 1950

BOX SCORES
  • A thriller at University Field as Hofstra gives up an early lead late and their game with Notre Dame goes into extras tied at 7. It stays that way until there are none on and two out in the bottom 13th, when RF Jake Gettman – with 2 homers and 4 RBI for the game already – strides to the plate and crushes a third dinger [25] to right for the walkoff win.
  • After the Ohio State-Purdue game ends regulation at 5-5, the Buckeyes score an astounding 11 runs in the top 10th to win it 16-5. Adam Vodzak has 3 hits including a double along with 4 ribbies for the Boilermakers, while Glenn Smith goes 4-for-7 / 2B / 3 RBI for OSU.
  • Mark Lloyd goes 4-for-5 with two doubles, a grand slam [4] and 5 RBI in total to power the Army offence in a 12-3 home demolition of Cincy.
  • Penn ace Noodles Hahn is at his very best, blanking Princeton on two hits with 12 strikeouts in a 6-0 road win for the Quakers.
  • A big game by LF Terry Rapp in which he homers twice [16] and drives in 3 helps UCLA easily account for Maryland at Turtle Smith Stadium. The Bruins score 10 again on Friday, but this time it isn’t enough as the Terrapins win it 11-10 on an 11th-inning walkoff single by RF Danny Hernandez. Steve Renner is huge for the hosts, going 4-for-6 with a homer [16] and 5 RBI.
  • Tony Lazzeri’s recent big poosh continues as the Nebraska second-baseman bangs out 2 solo jacks [29] in a 12-9 road win over Brown. Kyle Mayo and Aaron Caughran each drive in 3 runs for the Huskers. Lazzeri gets his 30th the following day but the Huskers lose 7-3.
  • #1 Harvard suffers an upset 3-0 loss at Kansas State as Landon Siebert pitches 8 scoreless innings. Navy’s 5-2 win at Mizzou narrows the gap for supremacy in the Northeast back to one game. 3 homers [24] and 8 RBI by Harry Stovey help Navy to a huge 15-4 Friday win and, while Harvard’s 5-1 win cancels it out standings-wise, the large run differential may have some bearing in the rankings. The results also guarantee both sides a spot in the playoffs; now it’s just who goes as conference champion and who as wildcard that needs to be decided.
  • Pepperdine has been wobbly of late, letting their lead in the West Conference whittle down to 4 games and opening the door for their rivals, but they get a steadying 8-1 road win here over North Carolina thanks mainly to Jaden Lambert’s 4-for-5 / HR [16] / 5 RBI effort and Frank Smith’s superlative (8 IP / 1 H / 1 ER / 11 K) pitching. A tight 5-4 Friday win for the Waves settles the nerves just that little bit more. At 4 games clear with 6 to play one would think an utter collapse is needed for them to fail from here.
  • Danny Garofalo’s 4-for-5 / HR [9] / 4 RBI game is wasted as Wake Forest drops a close one 10-8 at Georgia after at one stage being behind 10-0. Bulldogs CF Jason Whaley is great for the victors, with 3 hits including his 18th round-tripper of the season and 3 ribbies.
  • Donte Fisher has a club-record 17 strikeouts over 8 strong innings as Florida keeps pace with Georgia in the Southeast with a 13-1 flogging of NM State.
  • Catcher Tom Puffer goes 5-for-5 with an RBI as Clemson sees off AZ State by 10 to 6 at Doug Kinsmore Stadium.
  • It’s a case of the one that got away for SJ State, who let LSU score 3 runs in the bottom 9th to win it 5-3. Matt Griffin is the walkoff hero for the Tigers, coming off the pine to hit his first homer of the year. It’s swings and roundabouts in the end as the Spartans score late to eke out a 4-3 win the following day.
  • What could be a costly loss for A&M in every respect as they drop a 4-3 heartbreaker to TCU, with the Horned Frogs walking it off on a single by catcher Robby Gamble. The Aggies may also have seen the last of CF Adam Shepherd for the campaign after he is forced out of the game with shoulder inflammation, with initial reports estimating a 2-3 week recovery period for the gun CF. Another loss Firday by the score of 5 to 2 almost certainly confines the Aggies to the scrapheap for the conference title, and leaves them a game adrift in the WC race.
  • A 3-hit shutout by Chad Hanson leads SD State to an easy win over their cross-city rivals USD in the San Diego Derby. 2B Sam Lambert leads the Aztecs offence with a double, a homer [3] and 4 RBI. They finish the sweep on Friday with a similarly convincing 10-2 win, as their “Killer Cees” Chris Heimerl and Chris Taiclet each drive in 3.
  • An 8-4 win over The Citadel clinches the South Conference for Tulane.

BOX SCORES
  • Harry Lumley’s 2 solo shots [32] are all Ohio can muster in a lacklustre 7-2 loss to Dartmouth.
  • Kevin Endicott goes 4-for-4 with 3 ribbies as Ball State has no problems dispatching Kansas 11-2.
  • A beauty at Kamine Stadium between Lafa and the visiting Virginia Tech. Tied at 8 after 9 and then at 9 after 12, the game finally ends when the Hokies post 4 in the top 13th to win it by that margin. 1B Kevin Loerch goes deep twice [10] in a losing cause, while driving in 4. It’s V-Tech’s 4th straight win and keeps their slim hopes of playoff action alive, with them 3 games behind GWU.
  • Justin Maier hits 2 homers [8] and knocks in 5 as Virginia beats Saint Louis 10-4 at Davenport Field.
  • Michigan’s Emil Yde holds Stanford to just 1 earned run on 3 hits over 8+ while fanning 11 as the Wolverines take a 6-3 road decision.
  • A CG three-hitter with 8 K by Joe Benz gives South Carolina a 2-0 win at Tennessee.
  • Charlie Wendling blanks Vandy on 2 hits with 5 strikeouts as OSU wins 3-0.
  • Auburn gets a 1-0 win at Baylor thanks to a fine three-hitter by Bob Groom, who fans 10 Bears in the process.
  • Zach Alvarez goes 5-for-5 with a double and 3 ribbies to help UNLV get past Santa Clara 7-2 at Earl Wilson Stadium.
  • A 5-for-5 / HR [2] / 2 RBI game from 3B Jimmy Williams can’t stop MSU losing 7-4 on the road at Long Beach.

Saturday July 29th, 1950

BOX SCORES
  • Peek-A-Boo Veach further pushes his Pitcher of the Year claims with a 15 K / 2-hit shutout of Ohio as Kent State wins 2-0 to move to 51-32 and stay tied with Ohio State – who wallop Maryland 11-2 thanks in a large part to Bill Hinchman’s 3B / HR [5] / 5 RBI game – atop the East Conference.
  • Army’s Jimmy Bakula allows just two hits and one run over the full 9 as the Black knights take care of Wazzu by 5 to 1.
  • Kansas ace Toad Ramsay strikes out 15 to take his season total through the 300 mark, but Kansas nevertheless loses 2-1 to Louisville.
  • 5 hits by 3B Joe Hawthorne aren’t enough to stop GWU falling 9-8 in 14 innings to Villanova at Barcroft Park.
  • Clarence Currie shuts out Cincy on 5 hits with a club-record 13 strikeouts in a 9-0 home win for Holy Cross. The Bearcats hit back on Sunday with an 8-7 13-inning win as Dave Bancroft goes bananas with 2 homers [26] and 7 RBI, while LF Mike Dahlke has a 5 hit game.
  • Josh Haneline pitches a three-hitter as Cornell slips past Brown 1-0 at Hoy Field. The Bears square the ledger with a 3-1 Sunday win in 11 innings behind a strong outing by JP Granatelli.
  • Gus Krock holds Baylor to 4 hits and 1 unearned run in a complete game as Santa Barbara cruise to a 12-1 road win. Shortstop Alan Greer goes 3-for-5 with a homer [4] and 4 RBI for the Gauchos.
  • Joe Jordan pitches a one-hitter as South Carolina gets a hard-fought 1-0 win at LSU.
  • Justin McBee has 4 hits and 3 ribbies to help LMU get past SD State 9-7 in 10 at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
  • Shortstop Matt Messler’s 3 doubles and 4 RBI are key in Fullerton’s 8-5 road win over Fresno.

Sunday July 30th, 1950

BOX SCORES
  • Virginia’s Gary Sagle pitches his side to a 2-0 win at Notre Dame with a five-hitter while fanning a dozen.
  • A fine effort from Adam Boylan, in which he allows just one run on 4 hits, leads Minnesota to a comfortable 6-1 home win over Iowa.
  • UCLA’s Logan Manley shuts out Northern Colorado on 7 hits in a 3-0 win at PK Park.
  • 2 dingers [10] and 3 ribbies by catcher Wilbert Robinson helps Ole Miss beat Tennessee 8-3.
  • 3B Jimmy Williams’ 2 homers [23] and 4 RBI are crucial as MSU nips Florida 9-8 at McKethan Stadium.
  • Dale Alexander stretches his lead in the JDL home run race with 2 longballs [38] and brings his RBI tally to 100 with 5 as Auburn beats Georgia 8-3.
  • A 4-hit / 14 K shutout gem by Tristan Williams gets Tulane a 2-0 win against NC State.
  • Oklahoma’s Ian Foster shuts out Texas on 4 hits with 10 strikeouts in a 3-0 home win.
  • 2 doubles and 6 ribbies by RF Fernando Rodriguez aren’t enough for Pepperdine to avoid being beaten 14-11 at Northridge. Nate DeYong and pitcher Doug Kaplan each drive in 4 runs for the Matadors.

HML Player of the Week: Harry Stovey (Navy) .556 / 4 HR / 13 RBI.

JDL Player of the Week: Jimmy Williams (Mississippi State) .600 / 4 HR / 9 RBI.

HML Batter of the Month: Josh Athey (Maryland) .455 / 6 HR / 22 RBI.

HML Pitcher of the Week: Peek-A-Boo Veach (Kent State) 4-0 / 1.22 / 60 K / 44.1 IP.

JDL Batter of the Week: Joe Hauser (Florida) .352 / 10 HR / 29 RBI.

JDL Pitcher of the Week: Al Gearhauser (Santa Clara) 4-1 / 1.29 / 48 K / 42 IP.

Injury news for this week:
  • Brown SP Mike Brinegar: partially torn labrum; 4 months
  • USC SS Justin Lang: strained back; 2 weeks
  • New Mexico SS Jack Barry: torn quadriceps; 5 weeks
  • Louisville CF Jason Adams: concussion; 5 weeks
  • Stanford 1B Joel Maly: torn ankle ligaments; 5 weeks
  • Kansas State SP Bill Rivera: torn rotator cuff; 15 months
  • Bradley RP Bobby Dunwiddie: torn meniscus; 5 months
  • LSU SP Paul Hamilton: elbow surgery; 7 months
  • NC State 2B Ryan Allen: concussion; 5 weeks
  • Maryland SP Ernesto Echevarria: torn shoulder labrum; 8 months
  • The Citadel SP Matt Darby: finger avulsion; 2 weeks
  • Clemson SP Sean McNames: strained oblique; 5-6 weeks
  • Vanderbilt LF Kenny Ferguson: torn hamstring; 5-6 weeks
  • Nevada C Amos Cross: fractured shoulder blade; 5 weeks
  • Purdue SP Steve Lewis: elbow reconstruction – almost certainly played his last ACBA game
  • Vanderbilt CL Glenn Novak: oblique strain; 4 weeks

And as we enter the final week of the 1950 ACBA regular season, here’s one last look at how the conference and wildcard races are playing out (remember, there are three WC spots in each league):

Horace Mann League

Atlantic Conference

GWU: 50-34 magic number 3

Look home and hosed, although with road games at Navy and Kansas State they certainly don’t want to assume so.

V-Tech: 48-36 2 GB / 4 GB WC2

Need to win all 4 games in their homestand against Oregon and Maryland just to have a chance.

Notre Dame: 46-38 4 GB

Are out of touch in the WC race so will need an absolute miracle. Final week is at home to Holy Cross and Kansas State.

East Conference

Kent State: 52-32 tied for WC2

Ohio State: 52-32 tied for WC2

Both sides have their chance to progress with a strong final week. KSU is on the road to Western Michigan and Miami, while OSU is at home to Virginia and Lafa—so that’s pretty much a wash.

North Conference

Bradley: 53-31

Illinois: 52-32 tied for WC2

Michigan: 51-33 1 GB WC3

All three here are right in the mix and it will come down to who performs in the remaining games. Bradley looks to have the cushiest run with away games at Richmond and Cincy. Illinois are at Kansas and Villanova, both of whom they should beat. Michigan play host to lowly Nebraska and then Minnesota, who have been big improvers down the stretch.

Northeast Conference

Harvard: 59-25

Navy: 57-27

Both sides are guaranteed of playoff action, only the order remains undecided. Harvard hosts Louisville and Columbia, while Navy are at home to GWU and Princeton.

Northwest Conference

Oregon State has clinched, all others are eliminated.

John Dewey League

Pacific Conference

BYU: 51-33

SJ State: 47-37 4 GB / tied for WC3

I don’t think there’s any chance of BYU missing out, and SJST will need plenty to fall their way. Their final week consists of a tough series against the Crimson Tide and then they round the regular season off against UNLV, all at home.

South Conference

Tulane: 54-30 have clinched.

Stetson: 46-38 8 GB / 1 GB WC3

Stetson are an outside chance of getting through, but need to win a bunch of games to make it happen. They have a relatively assignment at home to Baylor to begin with but finish up with 2 against the Green Wave, which will be tough.

The Citadel (44-40), Wake Forest (43-41) and FSU (43-41) are all still mathematically alive but realistically have no chance.

Southeast Conference

The most hotly-contested conference of all.

Auburn: 47-37

Two vs Long Beach and then a huge series against Alabama, all at home.

Florida: 47-37

A mixed bag for the Gators in a final week roadtrip that kicks off with two at TTU, who are embroiled in their own dogfight (see Southwest Conference) and then two against Ole Miss, which they should win. Problem is the horse may well have bolted by then.

Georgia: 47-37

Games away to NM State and South Carolina, neither of whom will be easybeats.

Alabama: 46-38 1 GB / 1 GB WC3

Almost certainly have to win all 4 of their games, which are at SJ State and the abovementioned clash at Auburn.

South Carolina: 43-41

In theory, alive; in reality, kaput.

Southwest Conference

Oklahoma State: 51-33

Look home, but will still need to negotiate tricky assignments at NC State and Texas A&M. At least they hold their destiny in their own hands.

TTU: 49-35 2 GB / currently 1 game up in the WC1 slot

A homestand against Florida and Long Beach. If they can survive that, they’ll have well and truly earned their invite to the big dance.

Rice: 47-37 4 GB / tied WC3

Home series v Nevada and Oklahoma are eminently winnable.

Texas A&M: 46-38 5 GB / 1 GB WC3

Only a faint glimmer of hope for the Aggies, and I think they’d need to win all four of the games at home to Tennessee and OSU to have any chance.

At 43-41, both Oklahoma and Houston are still viable, but neither has little real chance.

West Conference

Pepperdine: 52-32 guaranteed of at least a WC

Cal Poly: 48-36 4 GB / currently 1 game ahead in WC2 race

Need to win at least 3 of 4 away to MSU and Fullerton to be absolutely certain of playoff action.

Fresno: 46-38 6 GB / 1 GB WC3

Same boat as A&M, just a sliver of a chance and need everything to fall into place. A fairly easy final week, though, with road series at Ole Miss and San Diego. So not done yet.

Again, none of UCSB, Long Beach and Northridge (all 44-40) and Fullerton (43-41) have the dreaded x next to their name in the standings. But all may as well have.

1950 Week 21 Rankings

Not much change as we enter the final week, with Harvard still at #1 and Navy at #2, and it seems almost certain one of them will come out on top. OSU had a good week and do have a remote chance of catching them, but it would take some fairly extraordinary results. Tulane jumps 3 spots to #4, switching places directly with Bradley. But spots 4 thru 8 are still very much up for grabs. Dartmouth was a big upward mover, jumping 10 spots to sneak into the official list for the first time all season at #25. At the other end, Nebraska seems doomed to finish where they have been most of the year, with the Huskers now some 6 points adrift.

Top 25 teams as at end of ACBA Season 1950, Week 21 (Record / Points / Previous week’s ranking)
  1. Harvard Crimson 59-25; 37.26 (1)

1950 Week 22 Recap - Part 1

With the exception of truly outstanding performances, I’ll be limiting this week’s rundown to games that are key to conference races.

Thursday August 3, 1950

Horace Mann League
  • Atlantic: A huge win for GWU, who comes back late at Navy to win 10-7. V-Tech’s loss versus Oregon reduces the Colonials’ magic number to 1. Notre Dame, with a 5-3 home loss to Holy Cross, is eliminated.
  • East: Ohio State escapes with a 10-inning 5-4 walkoff win over Virginia thanks to a clutch single by Bill Hinchman, keeping the Buckeyes level with Kent State, who beats Western Michigan 5-2 on the road.
  • North: Michigan almost blows its chance, needing 13 innings to get past a dogged Nebraska 3-2, with Dan Godfrey the walkoff hero. Instead, it is Bradley and Illinois who imperil themselves, with the Braves giving up 2 in the bottom 9th to lose a heartbreaker at Richmond and the Illini never in it, getting just 2 hits all game as they lose on the road to Kansas 6-1.
  • Northeast: Harvard gives up a 6-3 lead as Louisville score 5 in the 7th and hold on for an 8-6 win at O’Donnell Field. Fortunately for the Crimson it matters not, as navy also lose their home game against GWU.
  • Northwest: Oregon State has, as you might recall, clinched its conference and all other teams have been eliminated.
  • Dustin Oliver two-hits Saint Louis with 6 strikeouts in a 4-0 win for Washington.

John Dewey League
  • Pacific: BYU loses 10-5 at Wake Forest but clinch nevertheless thanks to SJ State’s loss to Alabama.
  • South: Tulane has clinched top spot, but will be without LF Chris Ashby for its first two playoff games after he is suspended for his part in a bench-clearing brawl against South Carolina. Stetson is on the cusp of elimination after dropping a 5-3 home game to Baylor. FSU stays alive with a win; The Citadel drops out with a loss.
  • Southeast: Little resolution in the closest race of all as Auburn just sneaks home 7-6 in 12 at home to Long Beach, Georgia wins at NM State 6-3, and Alabama wins 10-9 at SJ State. Only Florida, who loses 7-6 at TTU, does its chances any damage but is still well and truly in it.
  • Southwest: Oklahoma State clinches a spot in the playoffs with a cruisy 4-0 win at NC State, but loses SS Dan Toler for the remainder of the campaign to injury. TTU consolidates its position with a nip-and-tuck 7-6 home win over Florida. A&M, on the other hand, drop its game at home to Tennessee and is on the verge of going out, as is Rice after a 9-0 home drubbing at the hands of Nevada.
  • West: Pepperdine, who was already guaranteed a playoff berth, clinches the conference with a 9-1 win over Clemson, with Frank Smith allowing just 2 hits in a sparkling CG. Cal Poly improves its chances with a tough 6-5 win at MSU. Fresno loses and is on the cusp, while all others still alive at the start of the day are dead and buried at its conclusion.
