Seattle Cascadians, Chinooks, and Steelheads

The blue and green home jerseys. Chinooks and Steelheads are both types of salmon.

Seattle Baristas, Emeralds, Evergreens, and Juniors

The green and black uniforms echo the Starbucks colors, hence the Baristas. Also, did you know that baristas is a gender neutral term? I didn't until I looked it up this week.

Seattle has dubbed itself the Emerald City (lame nickname, in my opinion), and Washington is the Evergreen State (better and entirely appropriate nickname).

These uniforms are the ones that, I think, look most like 90s Seattle Mariners uniforms, which is why I chose them for the Seattle Juniors, which are named, of course, for Ken Griffy, Jr.

Seattle Lamestains, Orcas, and Sockeyes

Back in the early 90s, the New York Times printed a list of grunge slang. The slang was an utter fabrication. A hoax. The list is hilarious. It's where lamestain (an uncool person) comes from.

Seattle's NHL team should have been named the Sockeyes (another type of salmon). It's a much better name than the Kraken.

Seattle Cosmic Lattes, Fishmongers, Marmots, and Mountaineers

While looking through a list of color names, I ran across cosmic latte. I don't understand how this was determined, but it's supposed to be the average color of the universe. It seemed like a good nickname for Seattle. The cosmic latte color (#FFF8E7) is a pale yellow: it's the color at the bottom of the palette in the top right of the jersey files.

The Olympic Marmot is found across Puget Sound on the Olympic Peninsula. I've seen a few of those when hiking there.

Speaking of hiking, the Mountaineers is an actual club. It's an old one, formed in 1906. Among other things, they publish outdoors books.

This group is different from the others. I've included an alternate city name: Rain City. I liked the idea of a team named the Rain City Grays. Also, the Rain City Ravens rolls off the tongue nicely, I think.

Seattle and Rain City Grays, Ravens, and Tyees

Grays and Ravens are self-explanatory. Tyee is, once again, a type of salmon. It also means "leader" in Chinook jargon.

Seattle Dazzlers, Finches, and Murder Hornets

Dazzlers was chosen as a nickname solely for its euphonious qualities. I think that Seattle Bedazzlers (Bedazzleds?) sounds even better, but I decided to restrain myself for once.

The goldfinch is the state bird of Washington.

Seattle Blackberries, Rhodies, and Shuckers

Blackberries are everywhere in Seattle. They're a non-native, highly aggressive species that takes over most any untended green space in the city. They have sharp thorns, grow like crazy, and are almost impossible to get rid of. Right now is the time of year when you can walk around and just pluck them from plants growing on the side of the road. The berries are delicious.

Rhodies is short for Rhododendrons, the state flower.

Oyster shucking is a skill, man. I can do it but at nowhere near the speed of people who are well-practiced.

Three more nicknames that were suggested to me. Two have Boeing in mind: the Engineers and Machinists.

Nashville Warblers

Nashville Warblers seems like a near-perfect baseball team name to me. Like a Baltimore Oriole, it's the name of a bird, and a warbler is also a singer—perfect for Music City! Unfortunately the bird itself migrates through Tennessee rather than nests there—it's sheer chance that it was spotted near and named for Nashville.

St Louis Perfectos

I really like how the road uniform turned out. The font, Baroney, has beautiful S and L characters. The P character, however, is rather plain, so the home uniform doesn't sing. I might have to return to this design but use a different nickname.
