These are written "as of now," so the final selections may vary dramatically, but hopefully these will add to the ongoing flavor of the league. The AL comprises the Bill James & Cum Posey Divisions. }

There are, of course, a lot of candidates in relief. Many of these will fall off the radar, as a single bad outing (or injury) is likely to take them out of all-star contention.

Tom Henke of the Ottawa Mounties has 10 saves, with a 3.29 ERA and a 0.88 WHIP, easily the AL leading closer at this point.

Detroit's Mike Henneman (0-2, 2.89 ERA) and Kansas City's Jeff Pfeffer (4-1, 3.05 ERA) have 7 saves each (as does the House of David's Tom Niedenfuer, who was arguably having a better year before injuring his shoulder) and either could sneak in, with Pfeffer's record perhaps giving him an edge. Memphis' Joe Beggs has only 4 saves, but he has yet to give up a run: clearly if that continues, he deserves serious consideration.

Baltimore's Don Bessent (0-1, 6 saves, 1.42 ERA) is the only other closer with decent usage with a WHIP below 1, at 0.87 (Baltimore has actually split closing opportunities between Bessent and Bob Miller, but Bessent has had more saves and save opportunities--Miller sits at 1-0 with 3 saves and 2 holds and a 3.29 ERA, but a similar 0.95 WHIP).

In addition to Beggs, the Memphis bullpen offers Jonathan Papelbon, who has a 1.35 ERA and a sparkling WHIP of 0.80 to go along with an 0-1 record, 3 saves, and 2 holds. Setting up Henke, Ottawa's Gary Lavelle is 2-1 with 1 save and 2 holds and a 1.96 ERA and teammate Ted Bowsfield is 2-0 with a 2.14 ERA.

Kansas City may have the best quartet of relievers in the league, with--in addition to Pfeffer as the closer--Craig Kimbrel, who has been virtually unhittable, at 1-1 with a 2.37 ERA and a WHIP of 1.00 and Adam Wainwright and Frank DiPino. Wainwright has only an 0-1 record, but a 1.80 ERA and 0.96 WHIP and DiPino is 0-2 with 1 save and 2 holds along with a 1.74 ERA.

The House of David's Bob Rush may be the closest competition Wainwright has as a high inning reliever. Rush is 3-1 with a 1.66 ERA and a 0.88 WHIP. Some would argue that Baltimore's Ned Garvin belongs here as well--Garvin has made 2 starts and 8 relief appearances, accumulating a 3-1 record with 2 holds and a 2.62 ERA with a 0.96 WHIP.

Chuck Finley's role for Los Angeles has been in flux all year, but he's been excellent no matter how he's been used, at 2-0 with 4 holds and a 2.96 ERA to go along with a 1.11 WHIP.

The AI's choices are somewhat inexplicable: Finley, Baltimore's Buddy Groom (0-0, 1 save, 4 holds, 2.42 ERA), Lavelle, and the Gothams' Mike Norris (1-1, 1 hold, 2.25 ERA). I mean, I love me some Mike Norris, but ...

I would project five relievers as Henke, Papelbon, Finley, Kimbrel, and Wainwright. But it's very unpredictable this early in the game.

There are, of course, a lot of candidates in relief. Many of these will fall off the radar, as a single bad outing is likely to take them out of all-star contention.

Johan Santana of Portland has been the leading reliever all season, with 14 saves. His ERA has taken a recent hit, but it still sits a highly respectable 3.18. Terry Adams of the Cleveland Spiders has 11 saves to go along with an 0-1 record and a 1.84 ERA, and merits strong consideration.

A trio of closers sit immediately behind Santana: San Francisco's Rod Beck (10 saves and a 0.00 ERA, but only 9 innings pitched), Miami's Aroldis Chapman (2-0, 9 saves, also yet to be scored upon), and Brooklyn's Watty Clark (2-1, 2.51 ERA). Clearly, if Beck or Chapman continue to not allow a run, they're in.

Philadelphia's Bob Howry is more problematic: his 10 saves look strong, but his 0-2 record and, even more, 6.59 ERA probably rule him out of the game. Howry's teammate, Ron Reed, may have a stronger case: 0-2, 2 saves, 8 holds, and a 3.13 ERA.

The Black Yankees' David Robertson (2-1, 2 holds, 2.28 ERA) and Ralph Citarella (1-2, 1 save, 7 holds, 3.71 ERA) and Cleveland's Chuck Porter (3-2, 2 holds) have all been impressive in setup roles. Add Portland's Elmer Brown (2-2, 2 saves, 5 holds, 2.37 ERA) and Brooklyn's Erig Gagne (0-1, 1 save, 5 holds, 2.45 ERA) into the mix, as well as San Francisco's Ken Howell, who is 1-1 with a save and 2 holds and a sparkling 1.47 ERA.

For higher usage relievers, another Philadelphia Star, Rheal Cormier should get some attention, as he has put up a 4-0 record with 1 save and 4 holds, a 2.33 ERA and a stellar 1.14 WHIP. San Francisco's Charlie Root is also 3-0, with a 3.33 ERA and an even better 1.07 WHIP.

Indianapolis' Rob Dibble just needs more innings: he has been virtually unhittable so far, sitting at 2-1 with 6 saves and a 1.55 ERA along with a 1.08 WHIP. But that's only across 12 innings of work.

The AI likes Cormier, Stan Coveleski (Cleveland; 3-0, 2 holds, 2.81 ERA), Lefty James (Indianapolis; 3-1, 2.52 ERA), and Robertson.

Right now, my five would be Santana, Adams, Chapman, Cormier, and ... Dibble.

This one is a little different ...

Birmingham's Alejandro Pena came into the game on a bit of a roll, having improved his numbers to a record of 3-3 and an ERA of 3.35. Homestead's Corey Kluber was just trying to stay in the league, with a record of 0-6 and an ERA over 6.

Kluber lasted only 2 innings before injury forced him from the game. He had given up one unearned run when, in the top of the first, an error by Mike Epstein allowed Tom Herr to score. Carlos Zambrano who, if anything, has been hit harder than Kluber, relieved him.

Pena allowed a run in the bottom of the 3rd and the bottom of the 4th on a sacrifice fly from Andrew McCutcheon and a bases-loaded walk to Honus Wagner that scored Josh Gibson.

So, 2-1 Homestead after 4 innings.

And then ... that was it.

Pena put in 8 innings, allowing 6 hits and the 2 runs (only 1 was earned), and the combination of Kluber, Zambrano, Billy Pierce, and Michael Jackson had kept Birmingham from scoring again.

Homestead's closer, Josh Lindblom, came into the game in the top of the 9th to close out the impressive win ... and, after getting the first out, gave up a single to Billy Southworth, a walk to Troy Tulowitzki, a single to Herr, and a sacrifice fly to Frank McCormick, tying the game.

And then ... that was it. For a long time, that was it.

For Birmingham, Wilhelm added 2 more innings, closer Carlos Diaz followed with 2 more, and Larry Benton added 3. For Homestead, Kent Tekulve added 2.2 and then Hal Carlson stepped in with the bullpen deeply depleted and delivered 4 crucial innings.

All scoreless. Through the 12th, scoreless. Through the 16th, scoreless. Through the 18th, scoreless.

And then ... that was it.

Earl Hamilton had followed Carlson, and held Birmingham scoreless for 1.2 innings. He took the mound in the top of the 19th, and induced a groundout from Hank Aaron.

But then the floodgates opened: Omar Infante doubled, Southworth singled, and Tulowitzki broke the tie with an RBI single. Herr singled to load the bases, and McCormick walked. Then the Black Barons really took control, with Frank Isbell doubling home 2 more runs.

With Hamilton clearly gassed, the Grays called on Ray Brown, who got out of the inning, but not before allowing RBI singles to Gene Tenace, Eddie Mathews, and Infante.

So, inning after inning of no offense and then, in the top of the 19th, 7 runs for Birmingham.

It was enough: Warren Spahn retired the side in order and the Black Barons left with the win, 9-2. Honestly, Birmingham deserved to win much earlier: they banged out 28 hits during the 19 innings, with Herr and Isbell each going 5-for-10, Aaron adding 4 hits, and Infante and Southworth 3 hits apiece. But 24 of their 28 hits were singles: the Black Barons left a whopping 23 batters on base in the game.

Homestead had only 10 hits on the day, with 3 of them coming off the bat of Rick Reichardt. All 10 were singles, and the Grays had their own struggles with timing base knocks, leaving 14 runners on base.
A remarkable, and totally unexpected pitching performance from Birmingham. Even with that, both teams bullpens are likely to suffer for a few games from this one.

#AL Catchers: Bill James & Cum Posey Divisions

The New York Gothams' Buster Posey is the clear class of this group, hitting 377/451/623, scoring 35 runs, and already accumulating a 2.6 WAR on the season. That's easy. So is Baltimore's Curt Blefary, second in the league in HR with 13 while hitting 280/392/632 with 34 RBI.

Behind him, it gets a little tougher. The House of David's Elrod Hendricks deserves consideration at 263/323/483. Kansas City's Ted Simmons (296/330/444) and Houston's Jim O'Rourke (254/342/433) have been solid offensively, but neither have really played enough and O'Rourke spends a lot of his time at other positions.

Hendricks has a CERA of 4.06, which helps his case, but has only thrown out 6 of 42 base-stealers, which doesn't. But nothing else really stands out defensively: Ottawa's Emil Gross has thrown out 37.5% of opposing runners, but hasn't hit enough to merit consideration.

Both I and the AI make the fairly easy choices: Posey, Blefary, and Hendrick.

#NL Catchers: Effa Manley & Marvin Miller Divisions

The choices get harder in the NL.

Johnny Bench of Indianapolis has seen a recent hot streak take him to 289/394/578 with 9 homeruns. And that might not be enough to start, as Portland's Joe Mauer is hitting 356/456/625. But the two of them have to be selected.

That leaves one slot with several worthy candidates. Even if you eliminate Cleveland's John Ellis (299/352/608) and Philadelphia's Sherm Lollar (263/374/513) for not having played quite enough, you have to pick between Homestead's Josh Gibson (321/410/473) and the Black Yankees' Thurman Munson (303/345/508). WAR favors Gibson by quite a bit, 1.6 to 1.1.

Turning to the defensive statistics, Mauer has thrown out 35.5% of would-be base stealers, but he's already in. Defensively, Munson has an edge, helped by Gibson's 9 errors, but it's not as big of an edge as you may think. Cleveland's Louis Santop may be the best defensive catcher in the league, but his offense--which is quite respectable with a 314/354/488 slash line--is a notch behind these others, and splitting time with Ellis has kept him off the field a bit too much.

So, once again, we're in agreement with the AI: Mauer, Bench, and Gibson.

THIS WEEK IN WHIRLED BASEBALL: May 13th

Performance

Baltimore pulled off a very impressive sweep of the New York Black Yankees, moving into first place in the Cum Posey Division. It leaves the Black Yankees--who at one point seemed likely to run away from the league--with the 3rd best record in the league, behind both Baltimore (26-16) and Portland (27-15).

Reggie Jackson may be the most surprising offensive performer so far, leading the league in both BA and OBP. Babe Ruth is still the most impressive single performer, and his teammate Lou Gehrig is now second in the league in SLG behind Ruth.

The WBL is not a pitcher's league at this point: the potent offenses reduce the number of decisions earned by starting pitchers (only 2 have won 6 games despite most starters having 8 or 9 starts) and an ERA below 3.50 or so is quite exceptional.

Streaks

The Black Yankees' Thurman Munson has the longest active hitting streak at 16 games.

Getting on base is, evidently, much easier than getting a hit: there are four active on-base streaks, led by Philadelphia's Rico Carty (20 games), Los Angeles' Don Buford (19 games),
Ottawa's Carlos Delgado (18 games), and Indianapolis' Oscar Charleston (17 games).

Rickey Henderson has swiped his last 25 bases. Some notable pinch-hitting streaks are alive as well: Indianapolis' Johnny Bench has come up with a hit in his last 3 pinch-hit appearances, and both Cleveland's Ron Blomberg and Philadelphia's George Hendrick have hit homeruns in their last 2 pinch-hitting appearances.

Bench has been on fire, hitting 365/468/769 over his last 16 games.

On the mound, Baltimore's Ned Garvin's hitless inning streak ended at 9.1 and Camilo Pascual's scoreless streak at 19 innings. Whit Wyatt (CLE) hasn't allowed a run in his last 16 innings.

At the team level, Houston is 8-2 over their last 10 games and Birmingham has managed only 3 victories in their last 10. Baltimore has won 4 straight, and both Chicago and Indianapolis have lost 3 in a row.

#Detroit Wolverines

Johnny Marcum's return to the rotation was a good sign for Detroit fans. Marcum combined with Mickey Lolich, Kevin Hart, and Mike Henneman, allowing 6 hits and 1 run in a 2-1 victory over Brooklyn. Marcum improved to 3-1, with Henneman picking up his 7th save.

All 7 of the Wolverines' hits came from Tony Phillips (3) and Ty Cobb and Hank Greenberg (2 each).

Hank Aguirre will be on the DL for at least a 10 days, forcing the Wolverines into another change in their starting rotation. Buddy Napier was recalled from AAA to take Aguirre's roster spot.

#Los Angeles Angels

Doc Gooden, Nolan Ryan, Jonny Venters, and Joe Nathan combined on a 5-hit shutout and Derrek Lee broke open a scoreless game with a 2-run double as the Angels triumphed over Chicago, 3-0. Gooden allowed only 2 hits in 4 innings before a rain delay forced him out of the game, a very positive sign for the struggling, young righthander.

Gerrit Cole joined the WBL's group of 6 game winners with 7 innings of 4-hit, 1-run pitching against Chicago. Chuck Finley and Nathan finished the game off, with Cole's record now 6-2 and Nathan picking up his 5th save. The difference in the game was Kal Daniels' 3rd homerun.

#Memphis Red Sox

During an 11-3 loss to the Gothams, Nomar Garciaparra was injured in a collision at home plate, and will miss at least a week. Wayne Causey was recalled from AA for infield depth.

#New York Gothams

4 hits from Willie Mays and 4 RBIs from Carl Furillo led the Gothams to an 11-3 win over Memphis, with a strong start from Juan Marichal moving the right-hander to 3-1 on the year.

Helped by back-to-back homeruns from Mays and Johnny Callison and 5 double plays, the Gothams rolled to a 9-2 victory in the second game of the series. Mickey Welch pitched 6 solid innings to improve to 4-1 and Al Mays earned his first save with 3 scoreless innings in relief.

Gaylord Perry's first start didn't go so well. Then, Christy Mathewson was called into the game to replace an injured Carson Smith, who was put on the DL. All of that made the Gothams look for an SP to recall from AAA, and they settled on Buck O'Brien. Pete Donohue looks better right now, but after a recent start, Donohue would be unavailable for use for a few days, a luxury New York cannot afford.

#Wandering House of David

Closer Tom Niedenfuer, who's been excellent all season, will miss about 3 months with shoulder inflammation. Bruce Sutter is likely to take over as closer with Phil Regan being recalled from AAA.

#Baltimore Black Sox

Bryce Harper hit 2 homeruns, scoring 4 runs and driving in 5, and Frank Robinson had 4 hits (including a homerun) as did Bobby Wallace (Wallace also drove in 4 runs). That was enough to support a decent effort from Jim Palmer and defeat the Black Yankees, 12-2. Palmer improves to 4-3 on the year.

Despite 15 strikeouts--a record 5 by Wallace--the Black Sox beat the Black Yankees in game 2 as well, 8-3 behind homeruns from Curt Blefary, Harlond Clift, and Robinson. Johnny Sain improved to 5-2 on the year and Mark Baldwin, recently moved to the bullpen, earned his first save with 3 scoreless innings.

Ned Garvin's hitless streak ended at 9 innings when Don Mattingly doubled with one out in the top of the first. That didn't stop Garvin from another fine outing, holding the Black Yankees to one run in 7.2 innings. Robinson had 3 hits as the Black Sox triumphed, 4-2, with Garvin improving to 3-1 and Don Bessent picking up his 6th save.

#Chicago American Giants

Dick Allen made 3 errors in the American Giants' 8-1 loss to Los Angeles. They led to 2 unearned runs, so the loss can't really be pinned on Allen's poor glovework. Tricky Nichols gave up 6 runs in 5 innings to take his first loss of the year.

Despite setting a league record for strikeouts with 13, Ed Walsh took the loss, 2-1 against Los Angeles, evening his record at 3-3.

#Houston Colt 45's

A 3-run homerun by Lance Berkman and a dominant start from Roy Oswalt led to a 4-2 victory for Houston over Philadelphia. Oswalt allowed only 4 hits in 7 innings, moving to 4-2 on the year and Brad Lidge picked up his 5th save in a game that dealt the Stars' Ray Collins his first loss of the season.

Jimmy Wynn went 5-for-5 with 3 runs and 3 RBIs as Houston routed Philadelphia 15-6. Felipe Alou made his WBL debut, and went 3-for-5 with 5 RBIs and HR Johnson added 4 hits, with the win going to Toad Ramsey, who is now 4-3 on the season.

With Trevor Hoffman complaining of shoulder pain, the Colt 45's recalled Mike Hartley from his rehab assignment while placing Hoffman on the 10 day DL.

#Ottawa Mounties

Old Hoss Radbourn was brilliant, allowing 1 run and 4 hits over 8 innings, and Tom Henke struck out the side for his 10th save. Radbourn evened his record at 3-3, helped by a first inning HR from Tim Raines, who had 3 hits on the day. Carlos Delgado and Phil Bradley added 2 hits and an RBI each.

A pinch-hit single in the bottom of the 9th by Delgado scored Alex Rodriguez--who had singled home Freddy Parent to tie the game--and gave the Mounties a 4-3, walk-off win in a game they trailed 3-0 in the bottom of the 7th. Gary Carter hit a two-run homerun then, setting the stage for Delgado's heroics.

Monk Dubiel will miss two or three weeks, prompting Ottawa to recall Chris Leroux, who has been essentially unhittable at AAA.

#AL First Basemen: Bill James & Cum Posey Divisions

Detroit's Hank Greenberg is an easy choice, slashing 327/385/635 with 11 homeruns and 43 RBIs. He would be behind Chicago's Frank Thomas, who is at 358/435/623, but has only seen 77 innings in the field (Thomas should make the game nominally as a 1B, but may be the starting DH for the AL).

It gets tricky after that, especially if you consider Baltimore's Frank Robinson (333/416/552) as an outfielder, which I think he really is. Likewise, Detroit's Bob Bailey and Los Angeles' Doug Radar will be covered with the third basemen.

It probably comes down to a choice between Kansas City's Boog Powell (295/411/473), Houston's Jeff Bagwell (301/389/497), and Ottawa's Carlos Delgado (266/391/483). Delgado leads the trio with 9 homeruns, Powell leads with 26 RBIs, and Bagwell with overall numbers. Memphis' Bill White has hit a bit of a slump, but he's still at 268/348/472, which should put him on the outside of the conversation.

Of this group, Bagwell has been the best fielder as well, with a high zone rating and a single error on the year to date. Delgado has also been a net positive defender.

The AI goes with Greenberg, Powell, and Thomas, so there's no real argument there.

#NL First Basemen: Effa Manley & Marvin Miller Divisions

1B is always a hard choice, given the offensive numbers you're likely to encounter. Lou Gehrig (344/448/664, Black Yankees), Kent Hrbek (342/424/638, Sea Dogs), Ron Blomberg (340/418/625, Spiders), and Mike Epstein (363/451/600, Grays) all have OPS over the 1.000 mark, making them almost required participants. Hrbek has 12 homeruns, and Gehrig and Blomberg have 10 apiece. You could see Blomberg more rightly as an outfielder, where he has seen more time for Cleveland, leaving the other 3 as the selections.

That leaves Cleveland's John Ellis (299/352/608) out in the cold, unless he makes it as a catcher and, perhaps more importantly, Philadelphia's Rico Carty (349/411/544), unless he qualifies as an outfielder (which is actually likely).

The AI also has Gehrig, Hrbek, and Epstein.

#Cleveland Spiders

Whit Wyatt was on the verge of WBL history, having allowed 1 hit through 8 innings against Portland. He struck out Jeff Burroughs for the first out, his 9th of the game, and then retired pinch-hitter Ivan Rodriguez on a popout to Jake Stahl at first base. But back-to-back singles by Harry Hooper and Joe Mauer were followed by a walk to Bobby Murcer to load the bases, chasing Wyatt from the mound. Terry Adams relived him and gave up an RBI single to Buddy Bell, making the score 3-1. But Adams earned the save, his 10th, by inducing another popout to Stahl to end the game, this one by Gil Hodges.

Johnny Bates hit a homerun and Stahl had 2 hits in support of Wyatt's great outing, which improved his record to 3-1.

#Homestead Grays

The 19 inning marathon with Birmingham decimated the Grays' pitching, a situation that worsened when Corey Kluber had to leave after just 2 innings, and was placed on the DL after the game. The Grays used 9 pitchers, necessitating additional roster moves, complicated by the previously struggling Carlos Zambrano and Kent Tekulve pitched better lately, leaving Billy Pierce the odd man out for the time being. Bartolo Colon and Cliff Lee were recalled back to Homestead, despite their earlier struggles at the big league level.

Birmingham's Harley Young had a horrible 9th inning, giving up a double, 3 walks (driving in the tying run), and a game-winning single to Rick Reichardt as the Grays stole a 5-4 victory from the jaws of defeat. Honus Wagner, Roberto Clemente, and Mike Epstein had 2 hits each for Homestead, with Wagner adding his 2nd homerun of the year and Clemente his 3rd.

#New York Black Yankees

Babe Ruth hit 2 homeruns, and Lou Gehrig and Derek Jeter also went deep for New York, but it wasn't enough, as Sparky Lyle gave up 2 runs in the 9th and Baltimore came from behind for an 8-7 victory over the Black Yankees.

#Birmingham Black Barons

Tim Hudson's first start was a good one: five innings, five hits, and 2 earned runs. Hudson improved to 2-0, and the Black Barons used good days from Eddie Mathews (2-for-3 with 2 RBIs and 4 runs scored) and Bob Nieman (3-for-4 with 2 RBI's) to beat the Grays, 7-3.

#Miami Cuban Giants

With 17-year old Martin Dihigo healthy again, the Cuban Giants were faced with a difficult roster choice, given Alexei Ramirez' strong performance (333/385/542 in 9 games). Wanting to give Gary Sheffield, who has only played in 1 game, a longer look, Miami sent Paul Molitor, who had been scuffling along at 254/289/338, to AAA to make room for Dihigo.

#Portland Sea Dogs

In a highly anticipated matchup with Cleveland's Cy Young, Walter Johnson was denied in his attempt to become the WBL's first 7-game winner. Johnson gave up 5 runs--3 earned--in 6 innings. The win went to Elmer Brown, now 2-2, who pitched 3.2 innings of hitless relief as, in the bottom of the 11th, Jeff Burroughs, who has raised his OPS about 100 points since being recalled from AAA, sent a pitch from Cory Gearrin over the right-centerfield wall for the walk-off 7-6 victory.

#San Francisco Sea Lions

Lefty Grove was delivering one of the better stars of the season--a 3 hit shutout through 7 innings. Then a double from Alejandro Oms and a 2-run homerun from Jose Canseco tied the game against Miami at 3. But Jack Clark hit his second homerun of the game in the bottom of the 9th for a walk-off, 4-3 victory for the Sea Lions. The win went to Ken Howell, who allowed 1 hit in 1.1 innings in relief of Grove.

It's very hard to win a game when you commit 5 errors. But that's what the Sea Lions did, topping Miami 6-3 behind homeruns by Bob Cerv (his first since his recent recall) and Pedro Guerrero. Cerv was 2-for-4 on the day with 3 RBIs. Diego Segui continued his stellar string of performances, allowing only 4 hits and 1 run in 6 innings. Rick Langford and Howell each earned their 2nd holds of the season, giving up 1 unearned run each, and Rod Beck picked up his 9th save.

#AL Second Basemen - Bill James & Cum Posey Divisions

Right now, all of the AL 2B will likely come from teams in the Cum Posey division.

Eddie Collins was the best 2B in the WBL when he got injured. He's just off the disabled list, so we'll see how that goes. But he was hitting 305/455/505 with 15 stolen bases for Chicago, to go along with the best defensive numbers in the league.

But choosing the other two is hard. Larry Gardner has been key to Baltimore's surprising season. and his raw numbers--308/434/484--are hard to ignore. Ottawa's Tim Raines trails only Collins in WAR, and in addition to hitting 290/383/477 with 7 homeruns and scoring 28 runs, he's stolen 30 bases while only being caught 3 times.

But either a slight slump from Gardner, or a hot streak by either Kansas City's Rogers Hornsby (285/363/474) or Houston's HR Johnson (333/373/448) could change the considerations.

The AI selects Collins and Raines, so no argument there.

#NL Second Basemen - Effa Manley & Marvin Miller Divisions

In the NL, it's a pretty easy choice, but one that I suspect will change. Right now, the best at second is Philadelphia's Chase Utley, who is hitting 296/372/557 with decent defense. San Francisco's Jimmy Bloodworth (305/353/500) should make it as well

And that brings us to Tommy Herr, who is slashing 356/385/442 for Birmingham. Herr began the year as a reserve, and is unlikely to keep this level of performance up ... but if he does, he should be in. Regardless, it's one of the better stories in a miserable first half for the Black Barons.

The AI currently favors Utley and Birmingham's Frank Isbell. Isbell is having a good season at 353/390/426, but he's really been moved to DH (where his numbers don't really warrant an all-star selection) by Herr's emergence.

The Cuban Giants and the Black Yankees were the only two remaining teams that hadn't been previewed. And somehow they played each other in Series XI!

New York Black Yankees

The Black Yankees lead the Effa Manley Division by 3 games with a record of 25-17. That's pretty good, but a few weeks ago, they looked poised to run away from the league, but they have gone 7-13 in their last 20 games.

But don't be fooled: they are still the best offensive team in the league, and still have the best starters ERA. The offense is, of course, led by the best player in the league right now, Babe Ruth (357/451/732 with 15 homeruns). But it's not like the Babe is doing it alone. Lou Gehrig is at 358/462/692 and Albert Belle at 337/395/615.

The challenge for the Black Yankees on offense is finding playing time for Belle, Mickey Mantle (297/411/434), and Eric Davis (296/337/537) in the OF and both Gehrig and Don Mattingly (309/359/525) at 1B. With the DH, 5 of those 6 can play each game, but only Ruth (along with SS Derek Jeter at 291/339/395 have played at least 40 games).

Their only real issue is at 2B, where starter Willie Randolph is struggling mightily at 179/312/265. His (and Jeter's) backup, Craig Counsell, is doing even worse.

Ron Guidry leads the starting pitchers at 4-3 with a 3.41 ERA and a league-leading WHIP. Red Ruffing sits at 4-0, 3.74. If the Black Yankees have an Achilles' heel, it could be the bullpen. Sparky Lyle has been solid as the closer, with 4 saves and a 3.60 ERA, and David Robertson has been excellent, with a 2.08 ERA in 13 appearances. But Goose Gossage and Dellin Betances have both struggled at times.

Miami Cuban Giants

Simply, Miami needs to improve. The Cuban Giants sit at 18-24, 9 games back in the Marvin Miller Division.

The two Jose's--Canseco and Cardenal--have been the best performers for Miami, with Canseco slashing 313/383/497 and Cardenal 323/351/465. Will Clark leads the team with 9 HRs and 30 RBIs.

The Cuban giants have already made some moves with hopes of changing it up: John Munyan, Paul Molitor, and Tony Gonzalez have been sent to AAA Orlando, replaced at the big league level by Gary Sheffield, Alan Ashby, and Alexei Ramirez.
Jim Thome is hitting 429/478/905 over his last 8 games ... which has only brought his season numbers up to 186/293/372. Which is pretty amazing.

The pitching has been a bit better, and has some interesting possibilities. Camilo Pascual leads the way at 4-1 with a league-leading 2.26 ERA. Tommy Bridges missed a start, but is still 3-0 with a 2.87 ERA and Rube Waddell has pitched far better than his 2-3 record, with a 3.19 ERA.

Aroldis Chapman has been a bit of an adventure in the bullpen, allowing 11 hits and 11 walks in 11.2 innings ... and somehow maintaining a 0.00 ERA so far, with 9 saves. But getting to Chapman has been hard, with only Ed Bauta (0-1, 3.32 ERA with 5 holds) being dependable to date.

#Series Matchups

New York pitcher first: Red Ruffing (4-0, 3.74) @ Tommy Bridges (3-0, 2.87); Dave Righetti (2-3, 5.18) @ Camilo Pascual (4-1, 2.26); Waite Hoyt (3-1, 4.17) @ Rube Waddell (2-3, 3.19); Ron Guidry (4-3, 3.41) @ Don Newcombe (0-4, 5.79).
Clearly, the Ruffing v. Bridges matchup is intriguing, and you could even see the matchups favoring Miami for the first 3 games.

#AL Third Basemen: Bill James & Cum Posey Divisions

Detroit's Bob Bailey has been one of the surprise performers of the year so far, slashing 328/413/565. The problem is that he's really been a DH for Detroit all season and, if he makes the all-star team, it should be at that position.

Doug Radar of the Los Angeles Angels merits strong consideration for the starting position. He's second in the league in RBI with 49, and is hitting 317/365/511 to go with it.

The challenge is who the third selection could be. Kansas City's Albert Pujols is hitting 304/368/492, but plays as much at LF, 1B, and DH as 3B. If either Chicago's Dick Allen (253/302/482) or Ottawa's Anthony Rendon (294/387/412) get hot, they could force their way into the conversation.

Perhaps the right selection is the New York Gothams' Pinky Higgins, who has been very steady at 316/382/456.

Bailey's teammate--and Detroit's actual third baseman, Jimmy Collins, is hitting 236/284/401, which is nowhere near all-star levels. But he has been the best fulltime defensive 3B in the division (Baltimore's Brooks Robinson has been even better with the glove, but absolutely putrid offensively), so perhaps that gives him a shot?

The AI prefers Bailey, Radar, and Pujols (as a LF). Removing Bailey from consideration here, I would select Radar, Allen (predicting he hits another hot streak and overtakes Rendon), and Higgins.

#NL Third Baseman: Effa Manley & Marvin Miller Divisions

The first two selections are pretty easy: Philadelphia's Scott Rolen (306/373/556) and Portland's Buddy Bell (325/388/537) should both make it, with Bell looking like the current starter. Rolen and Bell have also been the best defensive 3B, making the choice even easier.

After that, there are a lot of questions. Miami's Manny Machado has 9 homeruns, but not much else, and New York's Mike Schmidt has needed a recent surge to get his numbers up to 258/313/484.

The AI goes with Rolen and Bell. I'm going to predict that Schmidt continues his improved performance, and forces himself into the conversation as well.

Overall, the season has gone as anticipated for these two teams. At 25-17, the Black Yankees lead their division and have a dominant offense and a top-end pitching staff. At 18-24, the Cuban Giants are ... mediocre at best.

Miami welcomed Martin Dihigo back to the lineup after a long injury absence in the series opener.

#Game 1: Red Ruffing @ Tommy Bridges

Both teams had 2 hits in the first inning, but neither scored, with Red Ruffing striking out Manny Machado and Will Clark with 2 on. Ruffing fanned 6 through the first 3 innings.

A 2-run homerun from Mickey Mantle in the top of the 4th opened the scoring, putting New York on the board. Eric Davis followed with a solo shot, and the Black Yankees led, 3-0.

Miami's Tommy Bridges was chased from the game in the top of the 7th, allowing a 2-out, opposite field, 3-run shot to Babe Ruth. Eustaquio Pedroso relieved him, but perhaps a batter too late?

Ruffing finally gave up a run in the bottom of the 7th when Robin Yount took him deep to center for a solo homerun. The Black Yankees' righthander kept trying to get out of the inning, but errors by Willie Randolph and Derek Jeter (his first of the year) prolonged it, eventually bringing Jose Canseco to the plate with 2 outs and the bases loaded. Ruffing got the slugger to popout to Don Mattingly at first base, preserving New York's lead at 6-1.

Each team would score once more: Davis' second homerun of the game, and an RBI from Yount, for the final score of 7-2.

This was one of those rare games where a team makes 4 errors and wins--Mattingly had 2 miscues in addition to Randolph's and Jeter's, but Miami, who left 11 runners on base, were unable to capitalize.

Ruffing moved to 5-0 with his 7 innings, allowing 1 run and striking out 8.

#Game 2: Dave Righetti @ Camilo Pascual

Camilo Pascual is the current ERA leader in the WBL, at 2.26 while Dave Righetti has struggled a bit, with a 2-3 record and an ERA just over 5.

Mike Schmidt led off the top of the 3rd with a double, and Thurman Munson singled him to third, extending his hitting streak to 18 games. Derek Jeter was able to drive in the first run of the game with a single, but that was all the Black Yankees could muster.

The score stayed 1-0 through 6 innings, until, in the top of the 7th, Munson singled home Albert Belle, extending the lead to 2-0 and chasing Pascual from the game. Alex Colome gave up an infield single to Don Mattingly, pinch-hitting for Willie Randolph, and a 2 run double to Jeter.

Dellin Betances relieved Righetti in the bottom of the 8th, loaded the bases (single, walk, hit batsman), and was relieved by Ralph Citarella, who walked in Miami's first run with four straight balls to Gary Sheffield. A pinch-hit single from Jim Thome added another run, closing the gap to 4-2.

Pascal ended up being charged with 3 runs in 6.2 innings, but 2 of those were allowed in by Colome. Still, the loss drops him to 4-2 on the year. Righetti picked up the victory with 7 shutout innings.

#Game 3: Rube Waddell @ Waite Hoyt

Rube Waddell comes into the game with great numbers, including a 3.19 ERA, but only a 2-3 ERA. Waite Hoyt, on the other hand, is 3-1 with an ERA almost exactly a run higher than Waddell--another reminder that W-L is a team metric.

Derek Jeter led the game off for New York with a homerun to left field, but a Manny Machado sacrifice fly and a wild pitch from Hoyt put the Cuban Giants up 2-1. Alejandro Oms drove home Carlos Moran in the 2nd, extending the lead to 3-1.

In the top of the 3rd, Waddell motioned for the trainer to come out, and had to leave the game with an arm injury. This could be a challenge, as Miami is running out of bullpen arms. They brought in Clay Condrey initially.

Condrey did well until Eric Davis took him out of the yard in the 4th, tying the game at 3.

Gary Sheffield got the first hit of his WBL career with an RBI triple in the bottom of the 4th, effectively ending Hoyt's day.

Davis brought the Black Yankees level all by himself in the 6th: a walk, a steal of second, a steal of third, and trotting home on Manny Sanguillen's fly to right field. That gave him 20 steals on the season: imagine what he'd do if he played fulltime!

Eustaquio Pedroso walked in a run in the top of the 8th, putting New York up again by one run, 5-4, but Miami would fight right back with Sheffield delivering his second hit, a solo homerun into the left field stands.

And so we headed to extra innings. New York has the clear edge, with Miami having to stretch each reliever to their limit.

The top of the 11th brought Thurman Munson to the plate for the first time, after Mike Schmidt pinch-hit for Sanguillen. Munson led off the inning with a double down the right field line, which both extended his hitting streak to 19 games and put the go-ahead run on second base. Miami brought in Aroldis Chapman, who promptly whiffed Jeter, Babe Ruth, and Mickey Mantle to preserve the tie.

The challenge is where the Cuban Giants go next: Chapman needed 23 pitches to get out of the inning, and clearly has at most one more inning in him. Not even: Don Newcombe relieved Chapman with 2 outs and 2 on, but he got Munson to fly out to get out of the 12th inning.

It was all that was needed. Will Clark led off the bottom of the 12th against Dellin Betances with a single. Jose Cardenal came on to pinch-run, and a walk to Machado moved him to second. He scored on a single by Jim Thome, sending Miami home with the win, 6-5.

It took 7 pitchers, with Newcombe finally earning the win--his first on the year--with 3 pitches. But it's likely to mess up the Cuban Giants' rotation for a few days. After the game, Waddell was put on the DL, with Miami recalling Marcelino Lopez and waiving Edwin Encarnacion.

#Game 4: Ron Guidry @ Marcelino Lopez

The Cuban Giants will turn to the recently recalled--like, yesterday--Marcelino Lopez, hoping to earn a series split. It's a tall order against one of the better arms in the league, Ron Guidry, who comes into the game with a 4-3 record and a 3.41 ERA.

It did not begin well: Willie Randolph led off the game with a triple. But Lopez recovered, and got out of the inning without any damage. The game was a struggle for Lopez: he labored through five innings, giving up 7 hits and 3 runs, which was surely better than expected.

Guidry, on the other hand, was sailing through five, striking out 4 and allowing only 2 hits.

The problem was that Miami's bullpen was totally gassed, so Lopez was left to fend for himself. Ultimately, he recovered and e did well, completing 7 innings--and 119 pitches--before giving way, still trailing by 3 runs. It got a little worse: Jose Mendez came in, and with 2 outs in the 9th, had to be replaced with elbow pain.

Machado put Miami on the board with homerun in the bottom of the 9th against Guidry, but that was all they could muster, losing both the game and the series, 3-1.

Series Notes

Jose Mendez hit the injured list after the series, with Sandy Consuegra returning to Miami to help the beleaguered bullpen. Marcelino Lopez is likely to get more innings to see if he can help out at the big league level.

Alejandro Oms went 6-for-19 in the four games for Miami, and was really the only consistent bright spot for them offensively.

For New York, Thurman Munson extended his hitting streak to 20 games, going 6-for-13 in the series. Derek Jeter went 5-for-15 with 4 RBIs, and Eric Davis was 4-for-11 with 3 homeruns and 4 RBIs. Babe Ruth saw his average drop to a season low of .337, going hitless over the final 3 games.

#AL Shortstops - Bill James & Cum Posey Divisions

It's a two man race for the starting position between Los Angeles' George Wright (290/342/500) and Baltimore's Bobby Wallace (314/412/436). Both of them should make it.

Behind them, it gets trickier. The pool probably contains Memphis' Vern Stephens (273/349/439), the House of David's Ernie Banks (289/306/440), and Ottawa's Freddy Parent (263/336/432). Banks has 27 RBIs, which leads the group by quite a bit.

Eugenio Suarez of the New York Gothams is slashing 338/378/574, but has probably not played enough to warrant an all-star selection.

But, these are shortstops, so their defensive performance should count for something. Here, Parent has the clear edge, with Wright and Kansas City's Ozzie Smith (who at 265/349/325 just hasn't hit enough to force his way into the conversation) being the dominant fielders in the AL.

So, let's call it Wright, Wallace, and Parent. The AI agrees, but avoids the difficult question by selecting Wright and Wallace.

#NL Shortstops - Effa Manley & Marvin Miller Divisions

Portland's Jim Fregosi (275/350/450) is the only clear selection, and therefore the starter.

Offensively, you could argue for the Black Yankees' Derek Jeter (289/338/407). But he's really the only other candidate with a decent OPS.

Defensively, Homestead's Arky Vaughan has probably been the best shortstop in the WBL to date (it's either him or Detroit's George Davis), so in this week of a division, he could get a nod.

I'll go with Fregosi, Jeter, and Vaughan at this point, but I wouldn't be surprised if San Francisco's Dick Lundy or Birmingham's Troy Tulowitzki forced their way into the conversation by the end.

The AI punted on this one, selecting not a single shortstop to the NL squad.

#AL Left Fielders - Bill James & Cum Posey Division

The leader in the AL is pretty clear: Baltimore's Frank Robinson has been the key to their surprising season at 341/417/553, and is a fair bit ahead of the rest of the pack.

Probably the best candidates behind Robinson are Chicago's Duffy Lewis at 311/349/571 with 11 homeruns and 25 RBIs and the House of David's George Stone, who is hitting 322/412/517.

But Los Angeles' Don Buford deserves some strong consideration: Buford is hitting 320/412/473, and has been the key to the Angels' offense all season, scoring 28 runs. Detroit's Oscar Gamble has hit a bit of a slump, but at 267/385/491 with 28 RBIs is still in the mix.

Buford and Gamble are the only folks here who have done much defensively, but we're not talking about the great gloves of the WBL with this group.

The AI goes for Lewis, Robinson, and Stone, which is hard to argue with, but I would probably slide Buford ahead of Stone.

#NL Left Fielders - Effa Manley & Marvin Miller Division

The NL starter is pretty easy: the New York Black Yankees' Babe Ruth is the dominant player in the league at 337/445/697, 16 HRs, and 45 RBIs. And that's after a recent slump.

After Ruth, Philadelphia's Rico Carty is a no-brainer at 354/416/570.
And then it gets complicated.

Ruth's teammate, Albert Belle, is slashing 322/375/579 in somewhat limited playing time, and then there is a large gap to a trio with OPS' in the low 800s: San Francisco's Wally Moon, Brooklyn's Roy White, and Homestead's Rick Reichardt.

White has been one of--if not the best--LF defensively, so he'll get my nod for the third slot along with Ruth and Carty.

The AI only selects Ruth and Carty, which is also defensible, given the OF quality in CF and RF.

The featured game in Series XI is the opening tilt between two teams hovering around .500 as the San Francisco Sea Lions visit the Houston Colt 45's. San Francisco will start Dennis Eckersley to face Houston's Bret Saberhagen.

Both pitchers have had a rough go: Saberhagen has just struggled to find much consistency, while Eckersley has been absolutely hammered since an early-season trip to the DL.

A 3-run homerun by Jeff Bagwell, his 6th of the year, opened the scoring in the bottom of the first for Houston. Eckersley continued to struggle, allowing a run in the 3rd, and another in the 4th on a solo shot by Tony Gwynn. That ended his day, with the Sea Lions forced to go to their bullpen early. Charlie Root relieved Eckersley, and wasn't much better, giving up 2 runs in just under 3 innings before giving way to Jim Devlin.

Saberhagen, on the other hand, seemed to find some rhythm. He ended up giving up 3 runs over 7 innings--not great, but far better than he had been providing for Houston. All three runs were solo homeruns, from Wally Moon, John Beckwith, and Charlie Reilly.

Put all that together, and we headed to the 8th with Houston on top, 7-3.
Leon Day was on to pitch for Houston, but he only lasted one batter, grabbing his elbow in pain after walking San Francisco's Jimmy Bloodworth. Day was replaced by Mark Melancon, who gave up a 2-run double to Moon, closing the score to 7-5.

Devlin surrendered a single to HR Johnson and a walk to Lance Berkman, but two groundball outs--one a double play--kept Houston off the scoreboard in the bottom of the 8th.

Houston sent their closer, Brad Lidge, out in the top of the 9th. Lidge has been mediocre at best all season, and seems in danger of losing his job to Billy Wagner. This outing didn't help: Bob Cerv pinch-hit for Eddie Joost and deposited Lidge's third pitch into the seats for a solo homerun. Lidge sandwiched a strikeout between walks to Mickey Cochrane and Bloodoworth, setting the stage for San Francisco's hottest hitter--and the league leader in BA and OBP--Reggie Jackson.

The small contingent of visiting fans started up the chant heard in San Francisco when he approaches the plate: REG-GIE, REG-GIE, REG-GIE.

Jackson responded with a deep fly that sailed into the second deck, for a 3-run homerun and a 9-7 lead for San Francisco.

The Sea Lions' closer, Rod Beck, cut through Houston in the bottom of the frame, three-up and three-down, to preserve the victory.
Johnson had 3 hits for Houston, but the 10 runners left on base, combined with Lidge's implosion at the end, were just too much to overcome for the Colt 45's.

The best team in the WBL is ... the Baltimore Black Sox? Surprising, but with 29 wins, they have one more than either the New York Black Yankees or the Portland Sea Dogs. Baltimore is led by C Curt Blefary and OF Frank Robinson offensively, with Dennis Martinez and Johnny Sain each having 5 wins on the year. Key to their recent performance has been a bit of resurgence by OF Bryce Harper, who has pushed his OPS up over .700 (a jump of about 100 points in just over a week).

The league is pretty well clustered, with only four teams (Memphis, Homestead, Miami, and Birmingham) yet to reach 20 wins.

Individual performances are still pretty spread out, as the lists below demonstrate. Babe Ruth leads in 4 categories, but he's really the only player dominating across the board that way.

#AL Right Fielders - Bill James & Cum Posey Divisions

The problem in the AL is there are four must-haves.

It took a little while for Detroit's 20-year old wunderkind Ty Cobb to force his way into the starting lineup, but he's slashing 348/385/607 and clearly deserves consideration here.

Memphis' Ted Williams has been rock solid for the Red Sox at 304/391/567 with 10 homeruns and 34 RBI.

Shoeless Joe Jackson is slashing 343/440/614 with 11 homeruns and 38 RBI for Chicago.

And, Kansas City's Stan Musial is at 361/422/600 with 9 homeruns and 35 RBI.

You can really stop the discussion there.

If I were limited to three, I would drop Cobb due to his having significantly less playing time. But he's an everyday player now, and I would gladly sacrifice elsewhere to include all four of them.

The AI agrees, picking all four to the summer classic.

#NL Right Fielders - Effa Manley & Marvin Miller Divisions

One of the surprises of the league has been the superlative performance of Cleveland's Ron Blomberg, who is hitting 335/411/615 with 11 homeruns and 35 RBIs. The starting RF is either Blomberg or San Francisco's Reggie Jackson, who is chugging along at 362/483/623 without showing any signs of a slump.

There is a gap, then, to the Black Yankees' Mickey Mantle (who has seen more time in RF than CF so far) at 297/421/436 and Miami's Jose Canseco (296/370/456).

It's a bit of a conundrum. Roberto Clemente of the Grays has been the best defensive RF, maybe, but at 276/300/411 just hasn't produced enough.

So, Blomberg and Jackson are shoo-ins, and if I had to pick someone after them, it would be Mantle, unless Canseco ends up being Miami's only representative?
