P Frank Cook (35-R) was sent to Daytona (A) and P Tom Betke (25-R) was recalled. Betke made one start for us earlier in the season and it was not good, but it was better than Cook has been doing in May. Betke was 1-7 with a 4.50 ERA for the Tortugas. Our offense is horrible, but I think we need to go all-in on starting pitchers come January when the Draft arrives. We have zero right now that we can count on to be even mediocre next season.... Jacksonville Jays (15-32 .319 14.5 GB in 8th (last) place in the Southern Division) at Buffalo Bombers (23-25 .479 6.5 GB in 4th place in the Northern Division) JAX: Marco Gonzalez (26-R) (1-2 2.91 ERA 34 IP, 33 H, 0 HR, 14 BB, 18 SO) vs. BUF: Matt Nielson (31-L) (3-4 4.44 ERA 48.2 IP, 48 H, 4 HR, 14 BB, 31 SO) Gonzalez gave up 3 runs on 10 hits and 2 walks in 8+ innings last time out in his first win. He would seem to be due for an ERA correction... Nielson has lost 3 of his last 4 starts with 2 shellings and a shutout. He is pitching with a strained oblique, but he is a lefty and that should be enough to carry him through against us. Lineups: Pos Name (Age-Bats BA-AB-HR-RBI-OPS-SB DEF) JACKSONVILLE 1: SS Leander Gooding (30-R .250-120-0-10-.617-1 B) 2: LF Cal Doty (24-L .272-173-1-18-.693-8 B+) 3: 3B Brian Porter (33-S .265-166-1-17-.675-0 C+) 4: 1B Ismael Gonzales (33-R .256-39-1-5-.679-0 D+) 5: RF Mike Volkman (33-L .394-71-1-15-.962-0 D+) 6: C Garrett Bender (27-R .314-51-2-8-.867-0 B+) 7: 2B Frank Roadman (26-R .197-137-3-12-.556-8 B) 8: CF Danny Stewart (30-L .193-57-0-6-.492-1 C+) 9: P Marco Gonzalez (26-R .125-8-0-0-.250-0 F) BUFFALO 1: 2B Dan Faust (31-R .286-168-1-14-.691-10 B) 2: CF Tom Hamm (31-R .407-194-5-24-1.027-22 C+) 3: LF Mickey Lynn (28-L .301-183-16-40-.985-3 B) 4: RF Ivan Moreno (29-L .179-162-8-28-.637-0 C) 5: 1B Frank Cohen (25-R .361-119-4-16-.953-3 C+) 6: 3B David Rodriguez (29-R .232-82-4-10-.745-0 C) 7: SS Dave Lloyd (28-R .288-153-5-15-.803-0 C+) 8: C Phil Ebel (34-R .273-121-2-8-.768-1 B) 9: P Matt Nielson (31-L .056-18-0-0-.161-0 F) Strained oblique Game Start: 7:05 PM Ballpark: Sportsman's Park Weather: 61 F, Overcast, with an 11 MPH wind blowing out to left Attendance: 9,815 Top of the First: Leander Gooding lines a hit to right. He steals 2nd. Cal Doty lines out to short and they double Gooding off at 2nd... Brian Porter strikes out... Bottom of the First: Dan Faust swings at the first pitch and pops out to left. Tom Hamm swings at the first pitch and pops out to short. Mickey Lynn does not swing at anything and walks on 4 pitches. Ivan Moreno, his tired arm not tired anymore, strikes out looking! Bottom of the Third: P Matt Nielsen grounds the first Bomber hit to right and is bunted to 2nd by Dan Faust. With 2 outs, Mickey Lynn hits a home run to right... 2 to 0, Bombers. That is his 17th home run of the season. We have 18 as a team.... Top of the Fourth: Cal Doty and Brian Porter lead off with back to back hits. Ismael Gonzales grounds into a 5-4-3 double play and Doty goes to 3rd. Mike Volkman swings at the first pitch and lines a double to left and Doty scores! 2 to 1, Bombers. Bottom of the Fourth: With 1 out, Phil Ebel hits a home run to left... 3 to 1, Bombers. Top of the Fifth: Frank Roadman grounds one to short, but Dave Lloyd throws the ball away for a 2 base error. But the next three make outs... Bottom of the Fifth: With 1 out, Mickey Lynn takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. Ivan Moreno doubles to left center and Lynn scores... 4 to 1, Bombers. The next two make outs. Top of the Seventh: With 1 out, Garrett Bender lines a hit to left center. Frank Roadman grounds into a force at 2nd, 5-4. Danny Stewart lines a hit to center and Roadman beats the throw to 3rd. PH Ed Diskin (37-R) doubles to right center and Roadman scores! 4 to 2, Bombers. Top of the Ninth: New Pitcher: Dale Kumpf (30-R), not their closer, who pitched 2 innings yesterday for a Save. Kumpf has a 5.16 ERA in 22.2 IP. His main problem has been the 13 walks he has allowed. But that should not be an issue against our non-walkers.... Mike Volkman pops out to 2nd. Garrett Bender strikes out on 3 pitches... PH Joe Roberts (30-L) flies out to left... Lost - 4 to 2 We had 10 hits and made no errors Buffalo had 8 hits and made 1 error Marco Gonzalez (L 1-3) went 6 innings, allowed 4 runs, 6 hits, 2 home runs, 4 walks and struck out 3. 112 pitches. A 43 Game Score. Not very good, but the only fellow who has had a higher one for us in the last 7 days is himself... RHP Roger Wallace went 2 scoreless innings, allowed 2 hits, 1 walk and struck out 3. Matt Nielson (W 4-4) went 8 innings, gave us 2 runs, 10 hits, no walks and struck out 2. RHP Dale Kumpf (SV 2) pitched a perfect 9th with 1 strikeout. The 14th Save against us this season by the 14th different pitcher! SS Leander Gooding had 2 hits and stole a base. LF Cal Doty had 2 hits and scored a run. RF Mike Volkman hit a double and had an RBI. PH Ed Diskin hit a double and had an RBI. |

Clash of the Titans! We are in Hartford to play the Whalers a 4 game series. They just lost 3 of 4 here to Charlotte and are the 2nd worst team in the League. We would have to sweep them to make them the worst team. They are 10th in scoring with 3.94 runs per game (Jacksonville is #15 with 3.43). We are each hitting .243, but they are 2nd in the League in walks (181) and we are 2nd to last (125, only 1 ahead of Louisville). The Whalers are last in fewest runs allowed with 5.24 per game (Jacksonville is #15 with 4.94). They have allowed the most HR (56) and we have allowed the 2nd most (45). They are tied for the 2nd fewest errors made (36) and we have made the fewest (35). Their run differential is -65, the 2nd worst in the League, and ours is -74, the worst. Today is Tony Becerra's 32nd birthday! Yesterday's game was rained out, so we will try to play a doubleheader today. Jacksonville Jays (16-34 .320 15 GB in 8th (last) place in the Southern Division) at Hartford Whalers (20-31 .392 11 GB in 8th (last) place in the Northern Division) Game 1 JAX: Victor Espinoza (36-R) (4-4 2.18 ERA 70.1 IP, 57 H, 2 HR, 19 BB, 53 SO) vs. HART: Freeman Cain (34-L) (1-5 4.16 ERA 75.2 IP, 87 H, 3 HR, 33 BB, 27 SO) Espinoza gave up 6 runs on 8 hits and 5 walks in 5.1 IP last time out in a loss. Cain is their #1 starter, though Franklin Garcia, yesterday's pitcher, has a lot better stats. But Cain is a lefty, so we will find it difficult to score any runs... He gave up 2 runs on 8 hits and 4 walks in 7 IP last time out in a no decision. Lineups: Pos Name (Age-Bats BA-AB-HR-RBI-OPS-SB DEF) JACKSONVILLE 1: SS Leander Gooding (30-R .252-131-0-11-.616-2 B) 2: CF Cal Doty (24-L .278-187-1-18-.694-8 C+) 3: 3B Brian Porter (33-S .253-178-1-17-.641-0 C+) 4: 1B Ismael Gonzales (33-R .250-44-1-5-.647-0 D+) 5: RF Mike Volkman (33-L .395-76-1-16-.972-0 D+) 6: 2B Frank Roadman (26-R .192-146-3-12-.536-10 B) 7: LF Joe Roberts (30-L .343-134-0-13-.782-9 A) Sprained elbow 8: C Garrett Bender (27-R .310-58-2-9-.828-0 B+) 9: P Victor Espinoza (36-R .105-19-0-0-.296-0 F) HARTFORD 1: RF Billy Ness (27-L .364-55-0-7-.817-4 B) 2: CF Mike Fox (22-L .265-189-3-22-.746-9 B) 3: LF Robbie McFarland (23-L .295-105-4-18-.861-0 B) Rookie #82 prospect 4: C Mike Moen (30-R .278-169-1-13-.682-1 D) 5: 2B Charlie Mackey (26-R .180-128-3-16-.625-3 B) 6: 3B Eric Drake (27-S .122-49-0-1-.375-5 B+) 7: 1B Larry Napoli (34-R .216-102-5-15-.704-0 B+) 8: SS Dan Flaherty (40-R .179-145-3-10-.604-2 B) 9: P Freeman Cain (34-L .174-23-0-1-.348-0 F) Game Start: 1:05 PM Ballpark: Ebbets Field Weather: 55 F, Overcast, with an 8 MPH wind blowing out to left Attendance: 7,406 Top of the First: Leander Gooding grounds out to short. Cal Doty grounds a hit to right. He tries to steal 2nd, but they have a pitchout on and he is out... Brian Porter beats out an infield hit. Ismael Gonzales swings at the first pitch and grounds out to 1st, unassisted. Bottom of the First: Billy Ness swings at a 3-2 pitch and grounds out to 3rd. Mike Fox lines out to 3rd. Robbie McFarland grounds out to short! 1-2-3! Bottom of the Fourth: Charlie Mackey and Eric Drake lead off with back to back walks... But the next three all make outs! Top of the Fifth: Garrett Bender leads off with a double to left center. P Victor Espinoza lays down a bunt, but they get the out at 3rd, 3-5... Leander Gooding grounds into a 6-4-3 double play... It starts to rain in the bottom of the 5th... Top of the Sixth: With 2 outs, Ismael Gonzales grounds a hit up the middle. Mike Volkman gets beaned. Frank Roadman grounds a hit to center and Gonzales scores! 1 to 0, Jays! Bottom of the Seventh: After P Victor Espinoza throws a strike to Mike Fox, the umpires stop the game for 50 minutes. Now, I have a policy of never pulling a pitcher when he is throwing a shutout, but Espinoza was already at 117 pitches before the rain delay and there is no way he could pitch 3 more innings. Call to the Bullpen: Bill Grant (30-L), the lefty who cannot get lefties out, so we bring him in with 2 lefties to face.... Fox swings at his first pitch and rips one hard to left, but Joe Roberts makes a great running catch! The next two make outs! Top of the Eighth: On the Hill: Morris Thomas (31-R), after a perfect 7th and the 50 minute rain delay. Cal Doty swings at the first pitch and lines a hit to right. Brian Porter grounds into a force at 2nd, 1-6, but SS Dan Flaherty is hurt. Chuck Kellogg (29-R) comes in to play 3rd and Eric Drake moves to short. Ismael Gonzales bats against the righty because I fell asleep for a minute and draws a walk. I am brilliant! Mike Volkman grounds a double down the right field line and Porter scores! 2 to 0, Jays. That does it for P Thomas. New Pitcher: Edwin Torres (27-L), with a 3.81 ERA in 28.1 IP. Frank Roadman strikes out... Joe Roberts swings at the first pitch and grounds out to short... Top of the Ninth: New Pitcher: Marty Beck (24-R), their closer, with a 2.45 ERA in 33 IP. 18 walks, though, and only 11 strikeouts. Garrett Bender beats out an infield hit. PH Dennis Brown (27-L) strikes out. Leander Gooding swings at the first pitch and grounds a double over the 3rd base bag! Cal Doty is walked intentionally to load the bases up with 1 out. Brian Porter grounds a hit to right and Bender scores! 3 to 0, Jays! 1B Tony Becerra (32-L), who should have pinch-hit for Ismael Gonzales last inning, but came in for defense anyway, lines a hit to right and Gooding scores! 4 to 0, Jays! Mike Volkman flies out to right and the runners hold for some reason. Looked deep enough to me... Frank Roadman puts a charge into one to straight away center, but it is caught... Won - 4 to 0 You have witnessed a very rare event! A combined shutout by a team of mine! We had 13 hits and made no errors Hartford had 6 hits (all singles, 5 of them never left the infield) and made no errors Victor Espinoza (W 5-4) pitched 6+ shutout innings, allowed 5 hits, 5 walks (1 INT) and struck out 2. 117 pitches. LHP Bill Grant (H 4) went 2 scoreless innings, allowed 1 hit and 1 walk. RHP Gary Adamson pitched a perfect 9th. Freeman Cain (L 1-6) went 6 innings, gave us 1 run, 7 hits, 1 walk, 1 HBP and struck out 1. Only the 2nd left-hander to take a loss against us. SS Leander Gooding hit a double and scored a run. CF/LF Cal Doty had 2 hits and a walk. 3B Brian Porter had 2 hits, scored a run and had an RBI. 1B Ismael Gonzales had 2 hits and a walk and scored a run. 1B Tony Becerra had a hit his only time up and had an RBI. RF Mike Volkman had 2 hits with a double, was hit by a pitch and had an RBI. C Garrett Bender had 2 hits with a double and a walk and scored a run. We will move him out of the 8 hole and see if he stops hitting.... Game 2 JAX: Tom Betke (25-R) (0-1 7.50 ERA 6 IP, 7 H, 0 HR, 3 BB, 4 SO) Rookie vs. HART: Bill Wilson (32-R) (1-7 7.17 ERA 54 IP, 68 H, 17 HR, 20 BB, 38 SO) This will be Betke's 2nd Major League start. His first was on May 8 and went fairly well for the first 6 innings, but then he and the Bullpen allowed 4 runs to scored in the 7th. That is not a typo; Wilson has allowed 17 HR in 54 IP. He has lost 5 starts in a row, but pitched well last time out: 7 IP, 3 R, 4 H, 1 HR, 2 BB, 4 SO. I will give odds that he does not allow a HR to the Jays... Lineups: Pos Name (Age-Bats BA-AB-HR-RBI-OPS-SB DEF) JACKSONVILLE 1: CF Cal Doty (24-L .283-191-1-18-.704-8 C+) 2: LF Joe Roberts (30-L .333-138-0-13-.760-9 A) Sprained elbow 3: 3B Brian Porter (33-S .257-183-1-18-.645-0 C+) 4: RF Mike Volkman (33-L .400-80-1-17-.992-0 D+) 5: 1B Tony Becerra (32-L .228-149-6-19-.656-1 A+) 6: 2B Frank Roadman (26-R .192-151-3-13-.532-10 B) 7: SS Leander Gooding (30-R .250-136-0-11-.616-2 B) 8: C Bert Swope (29-S .182-99-0-5-.497-0 B) 9: P Tom Betke (25-R .333-3-0-1-1.000-0 F) HARTFORD 1: RF Billy Ness (27-L .350-60-0-7-.783-4 B) 2: CF Mike Fox (22-L .263-194-3-22-.737-9 B) 3: 1B Kim Scarbrough (34-R .229-83-0-7-.598-2 C+) Strained oblique 4: LF Roy Zimdahl (30-R .272-147-8-23-.827-2 B) 5: 2B Charlie Mackey (26-R .176-131-3-16-.616-3 B) 6: SS Eric Drake (27-S .137-51-0-1-.424-6 C) 7: 3B Larry Napoli (34-R .219-105-5-15-.708-0 C) 8: C Mike Tyra (25-R .243-37-0-0-.673-0 C+) 9: P Bill Wilson (32-R .278-18-0-2-.611-0 F) Game Start: 7:05 PM Ballpark: Ebbets Field Weather: 69 F, Overcast, with a 9 MPH wind blowing out to left Attendance: 5,360 Top of the First: Cal Doty swings at a 3-2 pitch and grounds out to 2nd. Joe Roberts grounds out to 1st, unassisted. Brian Porter grounds out to 2nd... Bottom of the First: Billy Ness grounds a hit up the middle. Mike Fox pops out to 3rd. Ness steals 2nd. Kim Scarbrough grounds out to short and Ness goes to 3rd. Roy Zimdahl strikes out looking on 3 pitches! Bottom of the Second: With 1 out, Eric Drake fouls off two payoff pitches and then takes ball 4. Larry Napoli swings at a 3-2 pitch and grounds a hit up the middle and Drake beats the throw to 3rd. Mike Tyra swings at an 0-2 pitch and hits a home run to left... 3 to 0, Whalers. Top of the Third: Leander Gooding nubs one in front of the plate, but C Mike Tyra throws the ball away for a 2 base error. It starts to rain.... The next three all make outs. Through 3 innings, we have not hit a home run yet, nor any hit whatsoever... Top of the Fourth: Joe Roberts lines a double to right. Brian Porter flies out to deep right center and Roberts moves over to 3rd. Mike Volkman takes a 3-2 pitch for strike three... Tony Becerra pops out to 2nd... Bottom of the Fourth: Larry Napoli and Mike Tyra lead off with back to back walks... P Bill Wilson bunts them up. With the infield in, Billy Ness grounds out to short and the runners hold. Mike Fox takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4, already P Betke's 5th walk of the game... Kim Scarbrough swings at the first pitch and grounds out to 2nd! Top of the Sixth: Cal Doty lines a hit to center, but gets thrown out trying to make it a double.... Joe Roberts lines a hit to center. With 2 outs, Mike Volkman lines a double to left and Roberts scores from 1st! 3 to 1, Whalers. Bottom of the Seventh: With 1 out, Roy Zimdahl and Charlie Mackey hit back to back singles. Call to the Bullpen: Roger Wallace (25-R). Ed Diskin is in to play 2nd in a double switch and Frank Roadman moves to short. Eric Drake beats out an infield hit to load the bases up with 1 out. Larry Napoli flies out to right and the runners hold. Mike Tyra lines out to 2nd! Top of the Ninth: New Pitcher: Edwin Torres (27-L), not their closer, who pitched an inning and gave us 2 runs in the first game. Torres got 2 outs in the first game. 3-4-5 up for us. Brian Porter pops out to short... Mike Volkman swings at the first pitch and grounds out to the pitcher... PH Ismael Gonzales (33-R) lines a hit to left. Frank Roadman strikes out... Lost - 3 to 1 We had 7 hits and made no errors Hartford had 9 hits and made 1 error Tom Betke (L 0-2) went 6.1 innings, allowed 3 runs, 8 hits, 1 home run, 5 walks and struck out 2. RHP Roger Wallace went 1.2 scoreless innings, allowed 1 hit and struck out 2. Bill Wilson (W 2-7) went 8 innings, gave us 1 run, 6 hits, no walks and struck out 7. And still 17 HR allowed.... LHP Edwin Torres (SV 3) pitched a scoreless 9th, gave us 1 hit and struck out 1. The 15th Save against us by the 15th different pitcher! This has to end soon as almost every reliever in the League has a Save against us.... LF Joe Roberts had 2 hits with a double and scored our only run. RF Mike Volkman hit a double and had our only RBI. PH Ismael Gonzales had a hit. For Hartford, C Mike Tyra hit his 1st home run of the season, drew a walk and had 3 RBI. The Whalers announced that SS Dan Flaherty, the 40 year old, had torn a muscle in his back and was likely out for the rest of the season. Last edited by Questdog; 07-30-2020 at 07:37 PM. |

White gave up 4 runs on 10 hits and 4 walks in 7 IP last time out, but got a win. Lineups: Pos Name (Age-Bats BA-AB-HR-RBI-OPS-SB DEF) JACKSONVILLE 1: CF Cal Doty (24-L .282-195-1-18-.700-8 C+) 2: LF Joe Roberts (30-L .338-142-0-13-.773-9 A) Sprained elbow 3: RF Mike Volkman (33-L .393-84-1-18-.981-0 D+) 4: C Garrett Bender (27-R .328-61-2-9-.875-0 B+) 5: 1B Tony Becerra (32-L .224-152-6-19-.643-1 A+) 6: 3B Brian Porter (33-S .251-187-1-18-.632-0 C+) 7: SS Leander Gooding (30-R .245-139-0-11-.603-2 B) 8: 2B Frank Roadman (26-R .194-155-3-13-.531-10 B) 9: P Marco Gonzalez (26-R .100-10-0-0-.200-0 F) HARTFORD 1: CF Mike Fox (22-L .258-198-3-22-.726-9 B) 2: SS Charlie Mackey (26-R .178-135-3-16-.613-3 C) 3: 1B Kim Scarbrough (34-R .230-87-0-7-.594-2 C+) Strained oblique 4: LF Roy Zimdahl (30-R .273-150-8-23-.828-2 B) 5: C Mike Moen (30-R .272-173-1-13-.666-1 D) 6: RF Norm Mayer (25-L .205-146-4-18-.693-6 A) 7: 3B Chuck Kellogg (29-R .324-68-1-8-.861-1 C+) 8: 2B Tom McDonnell (32-R .143-7-0-1-.286-0 C) 9: P Bud White (33-R .211-19-0-3-.513-0 F) Game Start: 7:05 PM Ballpark: Ebbets Field Weather: 63 F, Rain, with a 16 MPH wind blowing out to center Attendance: 4,130 Top of the First: Cal Doty pops out to center. Joe Roberts draws a walk. Mike Volkman grounds out to 1st, unassisted, and Roberts goes to 2nd. Garrett Bender, our new cleanup hitter, lines one hard to deep center, but Mike Fox runs it down... Top of the Second: With 1 out, Brian Porter grounds a hit up the middle. Leander Gooding draws a walk. A wild pitch moves them up. Can Frank Roadman make contact? No he cannot... P Marco Gonzalez bunts them up. Cal Doty grounds a hit to left and Gooding scores and Roadman heads home..... The throw by Roy Zimdahl is to the backstop for an error and Doty goes to 2nd!! 3 to 2, Jays! Joe Roberts lines a hit to center and Doty scores! 4 to 2, Jays! The next two make outs. Bottom of the Fifth: With 1 out, P Bud Light, I mean White, doubles to left center. With 2 outs, Charlie Mackey, the sub-.200 hitter doubles off the wall in center and P White scores... 4 to 3, Jays. Top of the Sixth: Frank Roadman takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4 and then steals 2nd. P Marco Gonzalez bunts him to 3rd. They walk Cal Doty intentionally. Much to my chagrin, he does not try to steal, but Joe Roberts gets in an 0-2 hole, taking pitches so he could... Roberts swings at the next pitch and clears the bases with a double to left and ends up on 3rd!! 6 to 3, Jays! They walk Mike Volkman intentionally, which is P White's 8th walk of the game. They make a pitching change: Marty Beck (24-R), their closer, who gave us 2 runs in an inning yesterday. Volkman tries to steal, but gets thrown out... Garrett Bender draws a walk. Tony Becerra grounds a hit up the middle and Roberts scores and Bender heads to 3rd and beats the throw and Becerra takes 2nd! 7 to 3, Jays! Brian Porter, who has quit hitting altogether, pops out to short. 4 for his last 34 (.118). Top of the Seventh: Leander Gooding beats out an infield hit and then steals 2nd. Bottom of the Seventh: Chuck Kellogg lines a 3-2 pitch to right for a hit. With 1 out, PH Diego Yanes (34-L), batting .304 with 2 HR and 6 RBI in 31 AB, lines a double to right. The Bullpen gets up. We walk Mike Fox intentionally to face that pesky sub-.200 hitter, Charlie Mackey, who has 2 hits with a double today.... He flies out to left! Top of the Ninth: On the Hill: Edwin Torres (27-L), after a scoreless 8th. 8-9-1 up for us. Frank Roadman strikes out looking on 3 pitches... I really thought he would hit for us... Ed Diskin doubles to right center! They walk Cal Doty intentionally for the second time today. A lefty walking a lefty intentionally.... A passed ball moves the runners up! Will they walk another lefty? Nope, they pitch to Joe Roberts and he pops out to shallow center and the runners hold.... That brings up Danny Stewart, another lefty, and a light hitter to boot.... He was put in for defense when we had a big lead... PH Barry Laskowski (34-R) is sent up and he is walked intentionally to get to our cleanup hitter! They must not think much of him and I cannot blame them. He never hit a lick before this year. But Garret Bender lines a hit to center and 2 runs score!! 10 to 8, Jays! Tony Becerra is allowed to hit to keep his glove in the game and he grounds out to short. Bottom of the Ninth: Dennis Brown is in to play right and Joe Roberts goes back to left and Cal Doty goes back to center. 1B Rick Tuttle (34-R), 2B Frank Roadman (26-R) and RF Dennis Brown (27-L) were sent to Daytona (A). 2B Rick Dundore (35-R), 3B Bobby Scrogham (25-R) and CF Frank Wendell (33-R) were recalled. We are back home to play New Orleans a 3 game series over the weekend. They just won 3 of 4 at Ottawa and have won 6 of their last 7. We split 4 games with them here, April 19-22. The Pelicans are 7th in scoring with 4.17 runs per game (Jacksonville is #15 with 3.53). They are 3rd from the bottom with 26 HR and we are tied for last with 20. They are 6th in fewest runs allowed with 3.77 per game (Jacksonville is #15 with 4.94). Their run differential is +21 and ours is -75, still the worst in the League. New Orleans Pelicans (26-27 .491 6.5 GB in 6th place in the Southern Division) at Jacksonville Jays (18-35 .340 14.5 GB in 8th (last) place in the Southern Division) NO: Bill Colby (29-R) (4-4 3.43 ERA 76 IP, 87 H, 5 HR, 18 BB, 38 SO) vs. JAX: Mackie Reed (29-R) (2-3 5.03 ERA 59 IP, 75 H, 6 HR, 24 BB, 24 SO) Colby is 3-0 in his last 4 starts. We beat him in April, but only scored 2 runs (1 earned) in 6 IP. That was the game that Victor Espinoza pitched his shutout. Reed won his last start with 1 run allowed in 8.2 IP on 7 hits and 4 walks. He hit a double and a home run in the game, the first Jay pitcher ever to hit a home run. We put RP Barry Finney (26-R) on the DL and sent P Sherrell Brown (27-R) back to Daytona (A). We recalled RP Barry Short (32-R) and called up P Mike Hasley (25-R). Short has done well for the Tortugas since being demoted, do we will give him another chance. Hasley has a 4.44 ERA, but has only allowed 1 HR in 26.1 IP, so he will get a chance in the rotation. We also need a spot starter for today, because of the rainout earlier. None of our pitchers are rested enough to go on short rest. So LF Barry Laskowski (34-R) was sent back to Daytona (A) and SP Mike Gaddis (32-R) was called up. He is famous for his 12.18 ERA.... New Orleans Pelicans (27-28 .491 6.5 GB in 6th place in the Southern Division) at Jacksonville Jays (19-36 .345 14.5 GB in 8th (last) place in the Southern Division) NO: Dennis Farmer (23-R) (4-1 1.95 ERA 55.1 IP, 45 H, 3 HR, 16 BB, 31 SO) Rookie vs. JAX: Mike Gaddis (32-R) (0-4 12.18 ERA 17 IP, 34 H, 5 HR, 5 BB, 9 SO) We lost to Farmer in April, but scored 6 runs (5 earned) in 8.2 IP. He was just named Rookie of the Month for May. In his last start for the Jays, Gaddis faced these same Pelicans and gave up 6 runs in 3 IP. Lineups: Pos Name (Age-Bats BA-AB-HR-RBI-OPS-SB DEF) NEW ORLEANS 1: CF Victor Ocasio (25-R .255-204-7-24-.725-10 A) 2: 1B Dan Carroll (23-R .210-105-0-11-.539-6 A+) Rookie #53 prospect 3: LF Omar Camacho (29-L .239-213-4-19-.626-12 B+) 4: RF Ricky Palmer (31-S .229-35-1-4-.741-1 A) 5: C Niel Williams (25-R .252-147-4-15-.737-0 B) 6: 2B Chuck Corrigan (25-R .289-204-2-25-.701-3 A) 7: 3B Mike Akins (33-R .167-42-0-3-.446-0 B+) 8: SS Benito Abonza (29-R .285-172-0-20-.710-1 A) 9: P Dennis Farmer (23-S .350-20-0-4-.733-0 F) Rookie #107 prospect JACKSONVILLE 1: CF Cal Doty (24-L .283-205-1-22-.714-8 C+) 2: LF Joe Roberts (30-L .342-155-0-17-.790-10 A) Sprained elbow 3: RF Mike Volkman (33-L .365-96-1-18-.918-0 D+) 4: C Garrett Bender (27-R .338-74-2-11-.884-0 B+) 5: 1B Bobby Scrogham (25-R .269-26-0-1-.791-3 B) Rookie 6: SS Ed Diskin (37-R .186-70-0-5-.550-0 D+) 7: 2B Rick Dundore (35-R .273-11-0-0-.697-1 B) 8: 3B Brian Porter (33-S .246-195-1-18-.617-0 C+) 9: P Mike Gaddis (32-R .333-6-0-0-.667-0 F) Game Start: 2:05 PM Ballpark: Connie Mack Stadium Weather: 73 F, Partly Cloudy, with a 9 MPH wind blowing out to right Attendance: 12,433 A new all-time attendance record! Including Opening Day! Free ice cream and pizza does make a difference! Of course, we came out behind on the deal, but we got a record crowd! They sure aren't here for the great baseball.... Bottom of the Third: With 2 outs, Mike Volkman beats out an infield hit and gets balked to 2nd. Garrett Bender grounds a hit to left and Volkman beats the throw home! 1 to 0, Jays! Top of the Sixth: Benito Abonza lines a hit to right, the first of the game for the Pelicans. The Bullpen gets up. P Dennis Farmer bunts the runner up. Victor Ocasio strikes out looking. Dan Carroll swings at a 3-2 pitch and lines a hit to right and Abonza scores with a throw... Tie Game: 1 to 1. Top of the Ninth: On the Hill: Gary Adamson (35-R), after a perfect 8th. PH Jim Tindall (38-L), 1 for 1 with a double this series, takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4... Dan Carroll grounds into a force at 2nd, 5-4. Carroll steals 2nd... We walk Omar Camacho intentionally. Ricky Palmer swings at a 3-2 pitch and misses! Niel Williamson swings at a 3-2 pitch and pops one to shallow right, but 2B Ed Diskin makes a great running catch! Bottom of the Ninth: P Dennis Farmer is at 81 pitches. 4-5-6 up for us. Garrett Bender grounds out to 1st, 3-1. Bobby Scrogham flies out to deep left. Ed Diskin lines out to 1st... Extras! Top of the Tenth: They go down in order! Bottom of the Tenth: New Pitcher: Jim Rutherford (31-R), their closer, who blew a Save and gave us a run in an inning on Friday. SS Leander Gooding (30-R) walks on 4 pitches. Brian Porter strikes out looking... PH Ismael Gonzales (33-R) is sent up. Gooding steals 2nd and goes to 3rd when C Niel Williams throws the ball into center! A wild pitch would be nice for another walk-off win! Gonzales swings at an 0-2 pitch and grounds one back to the mound. P Rutherford looks Gooding back to 3rd and then makes a wild throw to 1st and Gooding scores and THIS Ball Game Belongs to the Jays! Won - 2 to 1 We had 6 hits (all singles) and made no errors New Orleans had 2 hits (both singles) and made 2 errors (both in the 10th inning) Mike Gaddis went 7 innings, allowed 1 run, 2 hits, 1 walk and struck out 6. We decided to give P Mike Gaddis (32-R) at least one more start after his stellar performance yesterday, so we sent P Mike Hasley (25-R) back to Daytona (A) and recalled RF Dennis Brown (27-L). It has not been 10 days since he was demoted, but we have placed a player on the DL since, so we can recall him without issue. We cannot recall LF Barry Laskowski (34-R), however, which is what we would prefer. The plan is to recall Laskowski when his time is served and send Brown back to the Tortugas. The Louisville Colonels are here to play a short 2 game set. They swept Richmond in 3 games at home over the weekend and have won 8 of their last 10. We lost a pair of games to them here, April 16-17. They are last in scoring with 3.46 runs per game (Jacksonville is #15 with 3.52). We have both scored the same number of runs, but they have played 1 game more. They play in the best pitcher's park in the League, however, and we play in a decent hitters park. The Colonels are 9th in fewest runs allowed with 3.88 per game (Jacksonville is #15 with 5.04). Their run differential is -24 and ours is -85. Louisville Colonels (31-26 .544 3 GB in 3rd place in the Southern Division) at Jacksonville Jays (20-36 .357 13.5 GB in 8th (last) place in the Southern Division) LOU: Carlos Santiago (23-L) (2-5 3.46 ERA 80.2 IP, 82 H, 7 HR, 32 BB, 40 SO) Rookie vs. JAX: Victor Espinoza (36-R) (5-4 2.00 ERA 76.1 IP, 62 H, 2 HR, 24 BB, 55 SO) Santiago is their #1 starter. We have not faced him, but he is a #1 starter and a lefty, so we know what that means... He is 0-3 in his last 4 starts. He allowed 5 runs on 10 hits and 3 walks with 1 strikeout in 5.2 IP last time out, but escaped with a no decision. I am sure the Jays are just what the doctor has ordered to fix all his recent issues. We are in Columbus to play the Explorers a 4 game series through the weekend. They just lost a pair of games here to Buffalo. They are 15th in scoring with 3.58 runs per game (Jacksonville, amazingly, is up to #13 with 3.71!). How we have scored more run than Columbus is a mystery, as they outpace us in nearly every statistical category. They are 3rd in fewest runs allowed with 3.67 per game (Jacksonville is #15 with 5.00). Their run differential is -5 and ours is -75, still the worst in the League, but only 5 behind Hartford! They are now 18-2 in their last 20 games and 43-19 (.694) on the season, 8 games ahead of 2nd place Mobile. |

Today is P Marco Gonzalez' 27th birthday! It is 6 days to the trading deadline and we got our 1st trade offer for P Victor Espinoza (36-R). And I do not see how we will get much of a better one, so I pulled the trigger. Trade #12 P Victor Espinoza (36-R) to New Orleans for 1B/OF Glen Lewis (20-L) Lewis was the #3 prospect this Spring, according to Baseball America. He does not seem ready for the Major Leagues, so he will go to Daytona (A). The walks and strikeouts are definitely a concern, but he is only 20 and should improve in that area, though it does not look like he will ever be a high walk, low strikeout kind of guy. Hopefully, his power develops to compensate. One of the positive signs is that he is hitting lefties better than he is hitting righties. I considered rejecting the trade, to hope for Orlando to give us one of their top 2 prospects, but a bird in the hand, as they say... To fill Espinoza's spot in the rotation, we called up P Dalton Hartman (24-R), who has had 2 outstanding outings in a row for the Tortugas. His rest schedule, unfortunately, does not sync with everyone else, but we have a day off on Monday, so I am hoping that will negate the need for a spot starter to be called up. Jacksonville Jays (24-36 .400 10.5 GB in 8th (last) place in the Southern Division) at Columbus Explorers (27-32 .458 7.5 GB in 6th place in the Northern Division) JAX: Tom Betke (25-R) (0-2 5.84 ERA 12.1 IP, 15 H, 1 HR, 8 BB, 6 SO) Rookie vs. COL: Mike Elizondo (22-R) (2-7 3.38 ERA 82.2 IP, 85 H, 5 HR, 23 BB, 34 SO) Betke has not pitched in 10 days. Last time out, he gave up 3 runs on 8 hits, 1 home run and 5 walks with 2 strikeouts in 6.1 IP in a loss. This will be his 3rd Major League start. Elizondo started off the season 2-0, but has since lost 7 in a row. 4 of the 7 losses were Quality Starts. Last time out, was not: 6 runs (5 earned) on 10 hits, 1 home run, 2 walks and 2 strikeouts in 8.1 IP. There was a 51 minute rain delay in the 5th inning and he was not as sharp after play resumed. Last edited by Questdog; 08-02-2020 at 07:42 AM. |

Down in the Bushes: I have already settled on who I want to take with our first pick in the B Leagues Draft in January: SP Jim Baucom (19-R). He's 6' 8" and will turn 20 in a few weeks and he leads the Southern League in strikeouts. He can reach 100 MPH on the radar gun and throws 4 pitches. He is smart and there are no personality issues known. He pitches for the Jackson Generals and is 6-3 with a 2.76 ERA in 14 starts with 97.2 IP, 74 H, 3 HR, 30 BB and 89 SO. The only knock is his stamina is not the highest, but it is high enough to be able to finish games. He also cannot hit a lick, but If he can make it through the rest of the season without an injury and is available when we pick, he will be a Jay. Of course, now I have jinxed it.... |

That Lewis boy definitely needs seasoning, but he doesn't look like a bad grab for a 36-year-old inches from the cliff.
