Damn good pitcher IRL. Very underrated. Not HoF good, but damn good. Wish he could've lasted longer than 13 years, but he basically pooped out after his age 33 season.
I always thought it was a shame that Steve Rogers was such an outstanding pitcher but such an obscure figure. Even at the height of his career, not many people outside of Montreal knew who he was, and he probably wasn't even recognized in the streets there very often. Between 1978 and maybe 1983, he was one of the most reliable and effective right-handed starters in all of baseball. Like you said, not a HoF'er, but a damned good pitcher who deserves to be remembered.

I would even stretch that span back to 1975, and his 1973 rookie season was nothing to sneeze at either (10-5, 1.54 in 17 GS, and 5.1 bWAR in basically half a season [debuted on July 18th]). In a crowded rookie class that included Ron Cey, Davey Lopes, Gary Matthews Sr. (1973 ROY), Johnny Grubb, Richie Zisk, Bob Boone, Elias Sosa, and Dan Driessen, Hal Breeden (decent rookie season, not much after), Mike Schmidt, and Dave Parker, J.R. Richard, Randy Jones, Dick Ruthven, and Al "The Mad Hungarian" Hrabosky, he came 2nd behind Matthews Sr.. You could probably make a case that he deserved to win ROY that year too. Wish he could've been effective until close to his 40's, but alas it wasn't to be.

I always thought that 44 was a significant number. Aaron, Reggie, McCovey, and of course Kenny Landreaux. (I went to Jr High with his niece dontcha know...)

Down to 43 days and counting. Jeff Nelson, possessor of one the nastiest sweeping sliders against right-handed hitters I've ever seen, and was once embroiled in one of the nastiest scandals I've ever seen involving a professional athlete when he tried to sell his own freshly removed bone spurs on ebay. Blah.

Hated this guy, but I guess as Reggie Jackson used to say: "They don't boo nobodies." and I think that holds up for hating players on other teams. I hated him, but that doesn't mean I don't realize how damn good he was. Dennis Eckersley #43. Oh, by the way Dennis, Robbie says "Hi!".

Quite possibly the best name in baseball, if not in all of sport...

He wasn't a player, but he's probably our greatest #43 ever. Cito Gaston #43

As for players, R.A. Dickey (wonderful human being) and Raul Mondesi were the best of a mediocre lot of #43s.

The magic number has fallen to 42. Of course, that number was retired across baseball in honor of Jackie Robinson back in 1997. It was only appropriate, therefore, that the last player to ever wear that number, and, in effect, close it out, just happened to be the greatest closer in the history of baseball, the great Mariano Rivera.

Who won't remember his HR vs. the Angels in the 1986 ALCS - and he also put the Red Sox ahead in the 10th inning of that epic Game 6 against the Mets ... and the died way too soon - Dave Henderson.

You can also use this one in two days because he was actually wearing the #40 when he hit that memorable bomb and jumped up and down seemingly all the way to 1st base.

Paul Mirabella and Xavier Hernandez are the only Blue Jays to have ever worn the #42. Paul Mirabella #42. Can't find Hernandez anywhere.

...And I don't think you could've found a better human being to get that honour.
