Red Sox Make Deadline Deal One of the big glaring issues for the Red Sox this season has been the number of runners left in scoring position. On Tuesday, Boston saw the chance to capitalize on a deal that would bring one of the hottest hitters in the National League to town for another championship run. With the San Diego Padres 16 games out of first, and 8 games out of the wildcard, the need was there to cut salary. It is a sad but all too real factor that small market teams like the Padres need to take into account. That means that more expensive veterans become expendable as opposed to the more affordable journeymen that commonly populate their roster. Taking that into consideration, the Boston Red Sox sent Rubby De La Rosa, pitching prospect Michael Foltynewicz, and 2B prospect Sean Coyle to the Padres for OF Carlos Quentin, and Minor Leaguers OF James Darnell and C Austin Hedges. Also included in the deal by the Red Sox was MR Shawn Camp to help make room on the team's Major League roster. Carlos Quentin is having a solid year for the Padres. While playing in PetCo Park, a place that is notorious for being more friendly to pitchers than hitters, Quentin is hitting .257 with 19 HR and 62 RBI. At home in San Diego, he is hitting .270 with 11 HR and 32 RBI. A journeyman outfielder and 3B, James Darnell gives the Red Sox a chance to add some depth to their roster for this season. He will join Pawtucket. Finally, Austin Hedges gives the Red Sox another solid catching prospect. Jarrod Saltalamacchia is locked up for the next two seasons, however with Hedges in his rearview mirror, it could put a significant amount of pressure on 'Salty' who has shown a great deal of power this season, but has not been able to hit for average. Entering Tuesday night's game against the Yankees, he is hitting just .217 but he has already matched his 2013 HR total of 18. With the addition of highly regarded prospect Taijuan Walker and the continued growth of Mike Fredericks who was drafted last season, both Ruby De La Rosa and Michael Foltynewicz saw their days as being numbered. De La Rosa has played well in Pawtucket posting a 9-7 record, and Foltynewicz, acquired with Jonathan Singleton who was traded earlier in the season to Seattle, recently joined AA Portland. Quentin is expected to see a considerable amount of time at DH platooned with Mitch Moreland and the red hot David Ortiz who is hitting .426 in 15 games in July. The move also means that the Red Sox will most likely carry 11 pitchers until the September callups. That's no surprise with the lack of work needed by the Red Sox bullpen. Their starters have thrown 14 CG's this season, and the team posted extremely low game totals last year with their 12 man bullpen. Finally, Joe Thatcher is showing some progress with his shoulder injury. There is a chance that the Red Sox could have him back for the end of the season and the playoffs. The Red Sox head to The Big Apple for a 4 game set with the Yankees. They currently hold a 58-42 record and a 5.5 game lead over second place Tampa Bay. |

Boston September Callups SP Taijuan Walker - Called up during the last 10 days of August due to Jacob Turner injury. Went 9-5 with a 3.90 ER and 96 K's in Pawtucket. SP Steven Wright - Knuckleballer. Went 14-2 in Pawtucket this year. Already has a 2-3 Major League record. MR Carlos Gutierrez - 3-3 with 1.76 ERA and 5 Saves in Pawtucket. Made brief two day appearance to fill Joe Thatcher's spot. He has never pitched a Major League game. MR Jhan Martinez - Signed to a Minor League contract in May. Later signed to a Major League extension for 2015. 2-1 with 17 Saves and a 1.98 ERA in Pawtucket. C Jeff Mathis - Acquired in the Shane Victorino deal with Miami. Solid defensive guy who will make occasional fill ins this September but has little to no future with the Red Sox. 1B/OF Mark Kotsay - Bounced back and forth between Pawtucket and Boston this year. He is signed through next season, but it is questionable what kind of impact he will have. IF Drew Sutton - Journeyman utility guy who has bounced between the MLB and AAA teams since 2009. OF Jeremy Hazelbaker - 27 years old, and has put up two extremely solid years at Pawtucket, this year hitting .309 with 24 HR, 86 RBI and 26 steals. He has a real shot of being part of the Red Sox in 2015. |

Playoff Roster Announced; Ortiz Out John Farrell released his playoff roster for the first round, and veteran David Ortiz was left off. After the acquisition of Carlos Quentin, Ortiz saw his playing time greatly reduced. Quentin did what Mitch Moreland and Ortiz were not able to do. Simply put, he produced from the plate. This could very well mean the end of Ortiz's career with the Red Sox, and possibly mean retirement for the fan favorite, Big Papi. |

Red Sox Beat Royals in 7; Hamels to Miss Next Series It took the Boston Red Sox 7 games to beat the Kansas City Royals to advance to the ALCS against the Los Angeles Angels. The series was not without its casualties though. While driving to Fenway Park for game 6, pitcher Cole Hamels was rear ended by a fan on his way to the ballpark. Hamels will miss the series against the Angels. Taijuan Walker will replace him on for the series. The name of the other driver is not being released for his safety. |

Nationals Win World Series The matchup of the Los Angeles Angels and the Washington Nationals was supposed to go the West Coast's way, but Washington had other plans. After the Angels beat the Red Sox and the Nationals beat the Dodgers to prevent a rematch of last year's World Series, both teams were riding a lot of momentum. Thanks to the pitching of World Series MVP Stephen Strasburg, the Nationals were able to make short work of Los Angeles 4 games to 1. Strasburg went 2-0 in the series with a 1.72 ERA and 21 K's in 15 innings of work. His overall record in the playoffs was 3-0 with 39 K's. Congratulations to Washington on a superb 2014 season! In local Red Sox news, Bench Coach Art Howe and Pitching Coach Dave Duncan have decided to retire. A search to replace both coaches will start immediately. It does not seem like Pawtucket Manager Eric Weaver will be promoted. The team has decided to pick up Dustin Pedroia's $11 Million option for 2015. Jeff Mathis and Mark Kotsay will be released. Also, arbitration will not be offered to Andrew Bailey, Mitch Moreland, and Justin Ruggiano. They will become Free Agents along with Ryan Dempster, Franklin Morales, and David Ortiz. I am two seasons in and I am having an absolute blast. I would say I've actually managed 95% of the games myself. There were some points where I might sim a week here or a couple games there, but all in all I've been totally hands on with this team.
I thought it would be fun to take a look back at the trades that I have made. . . April 12, 2013 Red Sox Send: MR Pedro Peato, MR Drake Britton Rangers Send: 1B Mitch Moreland Notes: This deal worked out really well for me. Moreland was a big contributor for the past two years and played WAY above his potential especially in 2013. I really don't feel like I paid much for him at all. April 17, 2013 Red Sox Send: SS Stephen Drew, MR Allen Webster, SS Tzu-Wei Lin, SP Brian Johnson, 3B Garin Cecchini Astros Send: SP Michael Foltynewicz, 1B Michael Singleton Notes: I decided early that I was going to invest in Iglesias. The guy is a solid SS, and with the way Salty has hit the ball, going pure defense at SS was fine with me. Also, I added two solid prospects. Side note: Cecchini is playing really well for Houston. He is now their starting 3B. May 18, 2013 Red Sox Send: 2B Jonathan Hee Reds Send: IF Cesar Izturis Notes: This was a simple trade out of necessity. Ciriaco was injured and I wanted a better infield option than Sutton. Izturis was at AAA for the Reds, and was cheap. May 23, 2013 Red Sox Send: MR Alfredo Aceves, OF Daniel Nava Padres Send: MR Joe Thatcher, OF Mark Kotsay Notes: This one was tough to do, but I really wanted to add Thatcher. I really liked Nava. He was a spark plug, and although his numbers did not always reflect it, he could definitely contribute. Kotsay added a little more flexibility though since he could also play 1B. June 12, 2013 Red Sox Send: C Ryan Lavarnway, SP Clay Bucholz, OF Jonny Gomes, SP Brandon Workman, SP Matt Barnes Giants Send: Tim Lincecum Notes: So not every trade was a gem. I thought Lincecum was going to be the piece I needed, and Lavarnway and Gomes were two guys I never saw doing much with me in the Majors. Lincecum went 2-1 in 7 starts and spent A LOT of time on the DL. BUST. On another note, Lavarnway hit .263 with 27 HR and 102 RBI in Texas in 2014. July 19, 2013 Red Sox Send: OF Ryan Kalish, MR Craig Breslow, SS Deven Marrero, C Blake Swihart, SP Pat Light Marlins Send: SP Ricky Nolasco, SP Jacob Turner, SO Jorgan Cavanerio Notes: THIS was the trade i should have made in June. I was going back and forth between Nolasco and Lincecum, and decided to deal with the Giants. Nolasco only went 3-4 for me, but he was the much better option out of the two in my opinion. Oh well. I got Jacob Turner out of the deal, and I just locked him him for 3 more seasons. November 5, 2013 Red Sox Send: SP Felix Doubront, C David Ross Angels Send: OF Josh Hamilton Notes: Looking back at this one, I am surprised the Angels dealt Hamilton. Doubront was highly sought after, and Ross was just the icing on the cake. Neither had spectacular years for the Angels, and Doubront missed 4 months with a shoulder injury. December 23, 2013 Red Sox Send: OF Mike Carp Cubs Send: MR Carlos Gutierrez Notes: Although he had a phenomenal 2013 campaign, Carp wasn't going anywhere with my team. Gutierrez secured me a AAA option at the ML level if needed. April 1, 2014 Red Sox Send: OF Shane Victorino Marlins Send: 2B Noah Perio, OF Justin Ruggiano, C Jeff Mathis Notes: This turned out to be a good deal for me as well. Victorino was just too expensive to use as a utility outfielder and with Hamilton, Pence, and Bradley Jr out there, that is all he would be. I dumped his salary, picked up Mathis who could have filled in at C if I had an injury (I did not, luckily) and Ruggiano had a GREAT year. Too bad I'm not resigning him. June 6, 2014 Red Sox Send: SP Jorge De La Rosa, 1B Jonathan Singleton, SS Jose Vinicio, OF Manuel Margot, SP Ty Buttrey Mariners Send: SP Cole Hamels, MR Charlie Furbush, SP Taijuan Walker Notes: I love, love, love this deal. De La Rosa was mediocre at best. Although I had to include Singleton to get it done, with the emergence of Bogaerts at 1B, it was not a big deal to me. Furbush will be a MR from the left side this year with Thatcher as my LH specialist, and Hamels and Walker will be #2 and #3 in my rotation. Also, Singleton won Rookie of the Month in August. July 28, 2014 Red Sox Send: MR Shawn Camp, SP Rubby De La Rosa, SP Michael Foltynewicz, 2B Sean Coyle Padres Send: OF Carlos Quentin, 3B James Darnell, C Austin Hedges Notes: I wanted to add a big bat from the right side, and that is exactly what I did. Ortiz and Moreland were splitting time at DH, and just not cutting it. Quentin came out hot and hit in his first 17 games in Boston. His .280/13/26 for the year was not too shabby either. He just scares the crap out of me with how often he gets hit by pitches. Well there you have it. I feel like I've done a pretty decent job GM'ing thus far. I've had some good Free Agent pickups too, mainly Hunter Pence, but with a strong farm system, and good trades I feel like I've built a solid team. Last edited by AlpineSK; 06-02-2013 at 09:01 AM. |

Red Sox Offseason Report TRADES: Red Sox Send: 2B Derrik Gibson Los Angeles Angels Send: MR Alexi Ogando Notes: I had an open spot at Long Reliever since I let Morales go in favor of carrying Furbush and Thatcher into the 2015 season. Ogando fills that role nicely and can be a spot starter if needed. KEY DEPARTURES: MR Franklin Morales New Team: Chicago Cubs SP Ryan Dempster New Team: Minnesota Twins MR Andrew Bailey New Team: Tampa Bay Rays 1B Mitch Moreland New Team: Tampa Bay Rays Unsigned as of Opening Day: DH David Ortiz, OF Justin Ruggiano, SP John Lackey, C Jeff Mathis KEY FREE AGENT ADDITIONS: SP Justin Masterson - Masterson is coming back to Boston! He will be a #4 or #5 starter. OF Brandon Moss - Had a good season last year with the Los Angeles Angels. He will serve as a backup 1B and corner outfielder. NOTES: All in all, it was a very quiet off season for me. I feel like I have built a decent team, and I lost very little through free agency this year. My owner's prediction is once again to "Make the playoffs!" |
