Batter of the month: Scott Rolen - 06 Cardinals (.339, 5 HR, 29 RBI, 21 R in April)

Pitcher of the month: Al Demaree - 13 Giants (5-1, 2.17, 58 IP, 20 K in April)

- Reggie Jackson hit for the cycle against the 06 Cardinals.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Team Notes

1971 Oakland Athletics - Catfish Hunter started 5-0 and Reggie Jackson has brought in his big bat in April as the A's came out running. Jackson has 15 RBI to add to the 18 RBI by first baseman Mike Epstein. Rollie Fingers had five saves in the month playing his regular stellar role.

1912 Pittsburgh Pirates - Solly Hoffman is only batting .188 and Honus Wagner a modest .304 but the Pirates started the season with a winning month. The pitching has been good for a 3.07 team ERA but could tire early easpecially after a 21 inning marathon game this month at Baltimore. The Pirates should be in the mix all season long.

1936 St. Louis Cardinals - Joey Medwick came out red hot for the birds and ended the month with a .343 average as the club scored exactly 100 runs for the month and are only 3 games back. Dizzy Dean has been dominat with four wins and a micro ERA of 1.58; he struck out only 16 men but walked only six men.

1913 New York Giants - The top of the Giants lineup has been weak but the team still runs well and leads in steals as expected. The Giants have won 8 of 12 at the Polo Grounds and seem more dangerous there. Christy Mathrewson was 2-2 in April but batters are hitting .284 against him. The weather of course for many of these games has been a cold one.

1910 Chicago Cubs - Frank Chance must be concentrating more on managing the team then hitting as his .192 average in the month shows, still the Cubs have the second most runs so far and stars like Johnny Kling are quite hot. The Cubs did lost their first four games of the season but rallied well to finsh at .500. Look for the Cubs to fight all season long.

1977 Baltimore Orioles - Speaking of slow starts, the Orioles and Earl Weaver lost nine of their first 10 games but came around quite well by the end. The starting pitching has once again been the strength of this team, Rudy May and Mike Flanagan have allowed only 23 earned runs between them. The hitting however is quite behind and currently last in the league, young Eddie Murray is hitting only .221.

2006 St. Louis Cardinals - The Cardinals lead by Scott Rolen and a suprprizing Scott Spiezio lead the league in hitting and runs by a wide margin with Albert Pujols with 24 RBI already. The pitching however has been a nightmare so far with Jason Marquis and Chirs Carpenter luch meat for league hitters. Jeff Suppan may soon make an appearance in the startiing rotation. The Cardinals need to play like champions.

1962 Pittsburgh Pirates - The Pirates have been a mirror of the 06 Cardinals but without the strong hitting. Pittsburgh has only 7 home runs in the month and doesnt have the muscle in the middle of its order. Couple all of this with Bob Friend who is 1-5 as the ace and the Pirates could have been fortunate to win the 9 games that they did.

Mike Donlin - 12 Pirates (6 weeks)
Franckie Frisch - 36 Cardinals (4 weeks)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Team Notes

1971 Oakland Athletics - Two six game winning streaks in the month of May have Dick Williams and his team holding steady in the pennant race. The A's pitching is tops in the league with Rollie Fingers dominant out of the pen with 11 saves and is being used in non save situations as well with his 2.11 ERA. Reggie Jackson has 13 home runs.

1910 Chicago Cubs - Nineteen wins in May and the Cubs are showing their strength. Frank Schulte has 50 RBI already and has impressed in the middle of the order. The Cubs are 18-7 at the West Side Grounds and lead the league in steals. Chicag is a mistake free club and is only a breath away from first place.

1912 Pittsburgh Pirates - Not a single player in the starting lineup has his average over .300 but the Pirates have found a way to win the close games. Team pitching has been very good as Babe Adams and Claude Hendrix both have ERA's under 3. The Pirates have 18 wins away from home and are still lead by the up the middle leadership of 38 year old Honus Wagner.

1936 St. Louis Cardinals - There is Dizzy Dean and then there is the rest of the Cardinal rotation that is average so far. Joe Medwick has come back from injury and his average up around .350; the team is second is average and onbase percentage. As expected with so many deadball era teams, this team have gone away from the longball with only 15 in two months.

1977 Baltimore Orioles - Ear Weaver isnt adapting to any dead ball style of play but the Orioles still depend on their pitching to get the job done. Mark Belanger is batting under the mendoza line and it is a good thing his glove is so good. The Orioles are six games under .500 but keep in mind started the season losing 9 of 10 games; they need to be consistent.

1913 New York Giants - The Giants are still within striking distance of the top four teams but the Giants have a losing record in close games. The team average of .260 is also something that is very unlike a Giants team of this era so getting the bats back in line will be key. Chrsity Mathewson allowed only 15 runs in 6 starts for the month and appears to be picking up steam for the long summer.

2006 St. Louis Cardinals - Mike Mulder has a record of 0-8 and the Cardinal pitching has been looking for itself all spring long; Jeff Weaver might get his chance in the rotation soon. Albert Pujols and the offense is doing its part as Pujols has 42 RBI already. The Cardinals are first in most offensive catagories especially the power numbers. Still this team has really leatdown thus far for a championship team.

1962 Pittsburgh Pirates - Bob Skinner leads the league with his .358 average but the support has been minor as the Pirates have scored the fewest runs in the league. The Pirates havent had much of a bullpen either and are only 5-11 in one runs games. Still the Pirates are not far enough back, just like all the teams, in making a run with the long season still ahead of them.

Team Notes

1971 Oakland A's - Vida Blue and Catfish Hunter have combined for 19 wins and have lead the best staff in the division. If the hitting could have kept pace with the staff the A's would be running away with things but as it stands their .252 team average is last in the league and the lead on first is only a single game. Reggie Jackson has blasted 17 home runs already.

1912 Pittsburgh Pirates - Pittsburgh have their radar right on the pennant sitting only a game behind Oakland. The Pirates are a great road team winning 25 games, Howie Camitz has a record of 11-2 and thus far has been the pitcher of choice for the team. In a new role Lefty Leifield has situated himself as a closer and has saved 14 games. This team has its players doing exactly what it needs to win.

1910 Chicago Cubs - The Cubs have the best home record in the league and had an average month after a red hot May. The Cubs are lead by Frank Schulte who has 70 RBI and 15 triples in the middle of the order. Three Finger Brown may very well be on pace for 20 wins but little of that matters as the team has one goal, to win the pennant and finally give Cub fans some joy. Frank Chance and his team take challanges well.

1936 St. Louis Cardinals - The Cardinals had a 20 inning win this month and saw Johnny Mize hit the second cycle of the season. Dizzy Dean has been the most stingy hurler in the league having a 133 ERA+; brother Paul Dean has lost 10 games but has had some bad luck. The Cardinals love the low scoring game and are 17-10 in the close ones.

1962 Pittsburgh Pirates - The loss of Bob Friend for the rest of the season was shock especially after a 16 win month put this Pirates team back in the mix. The Pirates are five under .500 but only three back from fourth. Catcher Smoky Burgess has stepped up as the power man in the lineup with 9 home runs and a .328 average. Roberto Clemente leads the team with 46 RBI from the leadoff spot and also has 23 doubles.

1977 Baltimore Orioles - The Orioles are an inconsistent bunch who have been up and down all season long. The overall team average is last in the division and the inability to take a pitch leaving a weak .318 OBP. The Orioles do play fine defense with Rich Dempsey anchoring the team from behind the plate but Baltimore needs to play a more laid out style of offense, something Earl Weaver is determined not to do.

2006 St. Louis Cardinals - People may tend to forget that before their World Series run in the playoffs this Cardinal team had a number of issues, mostly on the pitching side. The hitting remains the most consistent in the league with Albert Pujols in his prime hitting .330. No pitcher has over 3 wins however other then Chris Carpenter who has 10. St. Louis has failed to have a winning run yet and doing so doesnt seem a lock as they sit five games behind fourth.

1913 New York Giants - After a good April the Giants have won only 20 games in two months. The least runs scored in the league as well as a very low and suprizing .258 team average tells all the story. Despite all of this the Giants like all the teams in this tight season still are within reach of the top teams with a long season to go.

Pitcher of the month: Christy Mathewson - 13 Giants (5-1, 2.06 ERA, 21 K, 2 SHO in July)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Team Notes

1971 Oakland Athletics - Vida Blue and Catfish Hunter are still the best two punch in the league as the Oakland pitching has proven its key to being on top of the standings. Getting on base can be an issue for this team but they still lead in home runs and have a cool about themsleves in big games. Oakland is holding off for the pennant.

1912 Pittsburgh Pirates - The Pirates had their fourth straight winning month and are a persistent club tha still wants the pennant. Babe Adams has emerged as the ace of the staff with a 1.07 WHIP and only 42 walks. Mike Donlin and Max Carey are both hitting around .320 and are a catalyst to an offense that scores runs in almost every fashion. This could be the month the Pirates overtake the A's.

1910 Chicago Cubs - Another Cubs team to flop? The Cubs are starting to worry their fans as can be expected, they ended July on six game losing streak and their position has become much more perilous. The starters have slipped a bit lately as King Cole has already lost 13 games. The team average of .276 remains an underachievement for this team and nerves as well as pressure wont make things any easier.

1936 St. Louis Cardinals - St. Louis is at .500 and holds a slim game and a half lead on the fourth spot so in many ways the season starts now for this team. The Cardinals have a losing record at Sportsmans Park and hit much less in the setting. Pepper Martin and Leo Durocher have failed to provide a spark at the top of the order. Still the pitching for the club remains consistent, Mike Ryba has been a kack of all trades out of the pen.

1913 New York Giants - The Polo Grounds has never been more alive as the Giants make their eyeopening run by winning 10 in a row to end the month and rush into August. Christy Mathewson has become unhittable again while the poor defense and hitting earlier in the season is beginning to turn around. This team knows how to win and John McGraw has positioned them perfectly for a standings run, I wouldnt bet against them.

1977 Baltimore Orioles - The Orioles need to put a run together and have to stop being so unpredictable. One day they look like the best team in the league and the next like a team that is lost and cant get along. Team average of .248 is still abysmal but the club can pound the baseball and they tend to come in bunches. Weaver has been letting his starters pitch late into games feeling little confidence beyond them.

2006 St. Louis Cardinals - Tony LaRussa has tried everything to get his pitchers to settle down as 7 or 8 arms have been thrown into the rotation, still beyond Chris Carpenter there is no support. Cardinal defense even with Yadier Molina and Jim Edmonds is still among last in the league while the team is even six games under .500 at Busch Stadium. A late run is not impossible but also not very likely.

1962 Pittsburgh Pirates - An 8 win month has sealed the fate of this team going into the final period of the season. The pitching staff has been a patchwork that has not worked while the station to station strategy of the offense has produced little. The Pirates really never recovered from the loss of Bob Friend at the top of their staff. Bill Virdon and his numbers out of center field are a good example of the season story (.245, 2 , 24).

- Claude Hendrix of the 1912 Pittsburgh Pirates pitches a no hitter at Forbes Field against the 1977 Orioles. Hendrix struck out seven while walking only two men in the vintage effort.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Team Notes

1971 Oakland Athletics - They have basically lead the division since the opening pitch of the season and a 19 win month has them in the best place to take the pennant. Vida Blue leads the league in strikeouts at 151 and at 22 years old is as dynamic a thorwer as we have seen. Rollie Fingers has also been the difference for this team allowing only 10 earned runs all season with 26 saves. Oakland have done their part in this season.

1912 Pittsburgh Pirates - The joy of the Hendrix no hitter this month made many forget that the team lost ground on first place but still should be comfortable to end the season. Honus Wagner is like an old vintage wine still leading the league in WAR powered by his 85 RBI. The team has put up a winning record every month and is a proud example of consistency. The pitching as a whole is only behind the A's numbers wise which puts them in good company.

1910 Chicago Cubs - The Cubs want no part of talk of a collapse and a good August has all but punched their ticket through. Frank Schulte leads the entire league with 104 RBI and has fit well with Heine Zimmerman who has been an unexpected star this season. Three Finger Brown is the turest definition of an ace having won 19 games and not allowing his team to hit a long losing streak. Joe Tinker and Johnny Evers could just as easily be the managers along with Frank Chance for a club that wins at all costs.

1913 New York Giants - The best team in the division in the second half had another strong willed month to build their fourth place lead to six games. It is almost impossible to remember that this team was deep in last place as recently as July 1st. Moving runners along, bunting, and taking the extra base are all tools for this team proving that to play as such takes everyman in the lineup to do their part. Look for the Giants to finish strong on what they have accomplished.

1936 St, Louis Cardinals - The Cardinals sputtered to 18 losses in August and melted in the heat of Sportsman's Park. All starters on this team now have losing records as confidence has waned with the season on the line. The club does lead the league in average at .283 but little team speed and overall power make that number less important. Team defense also needs to improve if this team should make a late season run, most would say however they are not playing baseball at the same level as the teams ahead of them and they only play the Giants three more times.

1977 Baltimore Orioles - A poor road team with the worst hitting in the league the Orioles are not who they thought they would be. Even the home run totals have frozen over in the second half wth the Baltimore offense uninspired and vanilla. Only Ken Singleton has his average over .300 and the batters are lacking confidence and options as they wont take a walk and cant produce runs. In truth this club could have been no hit two or three times at least this season.

1962 Pittsburgh Pirates - The Pirates have stole only seven bases this season and have been playing a different type of game then the teams that are ahead of them in the standings. Earl Francis has lost 19 games on the mound and the Bucs have the worst road record in the league with only 28 wins. This team has some stars but overall no one can argue that they have the talent to finish high, to their credit they had a winning month and appear keen on not finishing in last place. Jack Lamabe does hve an impressibe 11-1 record out of the pen this season.

2006 St. Louis Cardinals - Not facing the pressure well the Cardinals have laid it down in the second half of the season and should become he first champion to finish in last place. Albert Pujols have been sensational and is among the candidates for a triple crown and believe it or not this club has actually scored the most runs in the league, which tells you much about the rest of their game. Like the 1977 Orioles, this team has proved that the big offense style of baseball hasnt matched the efficient small ball of the old era, at least for this season that is.

Season #6
Final Standings

Early Era Earns High Grades
Some of the best teams in the deadball era proved that baseball of the time has an acute place in the competition for the best after three of the four advancing teams are all pre 1915. The banner team and story of the season had to the the 1913 New York Giants who were in last place as late as July and came all the way back to finished tied for the top of the standings. The Giants were just unbeatable in the second half including a 17 game winning streak in Septemeber to cap their outstanding season.

Until they were caught from behind, the 1971 Athletics lead this seson from end to end and showed how good they can be even before their World Series seasons. The A's had dominant pitching with Catfish Hunter and Vida Blue leading the way with a team best 3.37 ERA. The 1910 Cubs put aside any talk that a Cubs team cant win and finished well to move on in third place. Frank Schulte out of nowhere had 114 RBI for the team in the middle of the order, this is the first Cubs team to advance. Topping the final four where the Bucs from Pittsburgh who had a fun season including a nohitter by Claude Hendrix. Honus Wagner lead the league in WAR at 7.0.

A big dropoff from the top four the 1936 Cardinals finished in fifth and had three of their starters lose 17 games. Not a single man in the order had over 100 RBI and a batting title season was wasted by Joe Medwick. The 1977 Orioles had the worse offense in the league that doesnt fit the Earl Weaver formula. Mike Flanagan did win 18 games for an underated staff. The 1962 Pirates suprized noone and the injury to ace Bob Friend made an underdog team into a hopeless team.

Finally the champion 2006 Cardinals finished in last place with only 68 wins. The likes of Mike Mulder went 3-14 and a pitching staff turned out to be much worse then anyone ever thought. Still Albert Pujols and this offense will be back with other teams from this Cardinal era.

Team News

1973 LA Dodgers - Flying out of the gates the Dodgers have taken early control of the pace. The Dodgers are batting .326 as a team with Steve Garvey leading the way with a .432 average. Jim Brewer out of the pen has five saves and has not allowed a run 9 innings of work. The Dodgers could not have dreamed for a better start.

1944 St. Louis Cardinals - Walker Cooper has driven in 19 runs as the Cardinals and their balanced lineup hit .3-4 for the month and wont concede any outs. The weakness has been on the pitching side thus far with the staff not showing much beyond Max Lanier. Red Munger has been good out of the pen as the Cardinals have won 8 of 10 one run games.

1915 Detroit Tigers - Ty Cobb has his average over .400 again and also showed off a 20 game hitting streak to open the season. The Tigers are even with wins and losses and have struggled on the road at 6-11. The team has hit only two home runs but has stole 40 bases keeping the trend alive that small ball is the way to play. Not sure what direction this team will take.

1995 Cincinnati Reds - Stuck in the middle with a number of teams are the Reds who are being lead by Barry Larkin who has shined both with the bat and the glove; Larkin has an outstanding 21 RBI from the leadoff spot. The Reds lack depth on the mound with the likes of David Wells who is showing a 6.64 ERA likely to lose his job to veteran Jose Rijo. The Reds do lead the league in home runs wth 31.

1910 New York Highlanders - Almost 60 stolen bases for the Highlanders lead by Hal Chase who has 13; Chase has alot to prove and is playing like he means it with a .358 average in April. The loss of Jack Quinn has hurt the rotation but Tom Hughes has pitched well behind ace Hippo Vaughn who has 4 wins. The Highlanders are playing the worse defense in the league.

1896 Chicago White Stockings - The schedule makers hated the White Stockings giving them a 14 game road trip to start the season, the Sox did not do well and lost 7 of their first 8 games. Chicago i fighting well with a three man rotation and did turn their month around scrapping out 12 wins. The Sox are not beyond using some position players to pitch if need be, should be interesting.

1970 Pittsburgh Pirates - Doc Ellis has been fun to watch on the mound as the Pirates pitching has been steady and competitive. The Pirates have had trouble getting on base and only two men have their averages over .300 lead by Willie Stargell. The Pirates were swept at home against the Reds this month in four straight putting their April in a tailspin losing 7 of their last 8 games.

1962 New York Yankees - Yet another champion can not find their ground. Mickey Mantle has been average at best with only 4 home runs and Whitey Ford is 0-5 for the month as both men may be showing their age. The weakest link however has been Roger Maris who slumped all through April with a .185 average and not a single long ball. There is nothing dominant right now about these Bronx Bombers.

Team News

1973 LA Dodgers - After a 20-6 April the Dodgers cooled off just a bit but still hold a 4.5 game lead on the pack. Steve Garvey continues to have his average hover around .400 and the Dodger pitching and defense is the best in the league. Tommy John is putting togehter a Cy Young type season currently at 10-3 with a 2.32 ERA. Dodger Stadium never felt so nice.

1995 Cincinnati Reds - The Reds play with a great spirit and are strating to make many believe they can advance. The team won 16 games for Davey Johnson who is proving to be a master manager once again. This team has the lowest average in the league which my catch up to them but they have allowed the least runs in the league and seem to get the big hits only when they need them. Is it smoke and mirrors or are the Reds for real?

1910 New York Highlanders - This is where the league gets tight with four teams seperated by 2 games. The Highlanders know how to get on base and as a team have a .365 OBP which works so well with their stolen base tendecies which also lead the league. Hal Chase is still hitting .338 and has shown no signs of "dogging" it all season.

1970 Pittsburgh Pirates - The Pirates had a winning month and just like that are right back in the mix. The Bucks have hit the most home runs in the league with Wilie Stargell mashing 14 of them already. No one has the stuff Doc Ellis has shown so far and other then the occasional concentration lapse in a big spot, has hitters tied in knots with 53 K. Roberto Clemete lead the team with 40 RBI.

1915 Detroit Tigers - The Tigers have played .500 ball all season long and have to wonder if they are anything more then an average team. Everyone knows about Cobb and Crawford but few hear about Bobby Veach who is hitting .368 with 44 RBI after two months. The Tiger pitching has been a strain and Grover Lowdermilk is suppose to get some starts to help; Harry Coveleski is 2-10 on the short season.

1944 St. Louis Cardinals - A rough 16 loss month for the Cardinals even though their play hasnt changed much; fans are just hoping it was a bad luck run. St. Louis is having issues driving in runs even though they have a good team average at .296, they have the least extrabase hits in the league. Many expect and feel however that this team will be there in the end and June is the month to start.

1962 New York Yankees - They are far from dead and the Yankees have shown weak signs of life so far. Roger Maris turned his season around in a nice way and is now over .300 although his home run stroke is still MIA. Tom Tresh is a nice leadoff option for the power bats but the Yanks are still 7th in the league in runs scored and last in steals. The Yankees have been losing the close ones, with a 6-11 record in one run games.

1886 Chicago White Stockings - As feared lack of arms has caught up to Chicago very fast and manager Cap Anson has run out of options in June. Jocko Flynn may be on pace to lose 40 games has he has dropped 17 already with no help in reserve. Anson himself is hitting .344 and showing he can hit any era's pitching while Piano legs George Gore is up at .358. Chicago isnt going anywhere with out getting outs, as the game of that era was indeed from another planet.

Team News

1973 LA Dodgers - No one has appreciated home cooking more then the Dodgers who are 27-15 at Dodger Stadium and have carried that to the best pitching in the league. The Dodgers have stayed consistent since their hot start but their lead is down to under 4 games with the red hot New Yorkers causing a pain. Walter Alston is still a master manager.

1910 New York Highlanders - The Highlanders are the best surprise of this season and have played like a team who knows it will finish top. Another 17 game winning month as well as their own dominant 24-15 home record has been the story. Birdee Cree leads the team with 56 RBI while John Kinight is hitting .355.

1915 Detroit Tigers - The Tigers swept the Pirates and the Reds this month and are finally proving to be a force for the pennant only 4.5 games back. The team has the best onbase percentage in the league and is right behind the Highlanders in team steals; Cobb and his mates have quite the rivalry of course with New York and both teams are in the thick of things. With more then half the season left, the Tigers just might have a taste for first.

1995 Cincinnati Reds - Barry Larkin is carrying his .322 average well but the rest of the team isnt keeping up and the Reds have the lowest average in the league. A 17 loss month left the club even after 80 games but still holding on to fourth. Jose Rijo didnt work in the rotation and some talk of even 35 year old Frank Viola filling in has been kicked around. Regardless the Reds need to get hot again and hold off hungry teams behind them.

1962 New York Yankees - A champion isnt just going to roll over and after a slow start the Yankees won 18 games in June and are rising like a Dark Knight. The Mick was player of the month and the club now leads all the league in runs scored. Ralph Terry has been very stubborn on the hill and Whitey Ford is poised to be the ace he can be when the games mean the most. Tom Tresh continues to be a hot player at the top of this potent lineup.

1944 St. Louis Cardinals - These Cardinals had a more difficult losing month but are still right in the middle of the fight. Red Munger has filled the role of closer with 17 saves but the Cardinal pitching has held them down. These Cardinals put together the win of the season against the hapless White Stockings beating them 25-0 at Sportsman's Park, a whirlwind of a game that may ignite this club.

1970 Pittsburgh Pirates - Just when it looked as if the Pirates were gonna be in the mix they have a dismal month of June and drop six games under .500 but only three games out of fourth. The Pirates were swept in Detroit and in New York in the month and still have the hardest time in the league scoring runs. There is time to right the ship, but the Pirates need to flip their winning ways on the road and play better in their new home at Three Rivers Stadium where they are 17-25.

1886 Chicago White Stockings - Twenty one losses for Cap Anson and his men and even worse some of the most lopsided losses we have seen yet prove once and for all that the game is way ahead of these men. The team has already allowed over 650 runs and their team ERA is well over 6 and in truth none of their arms can really throw over 90 mph. The offense can still hit and this team is still second in runs scored but the team may well be on pace for over 110 losses.

The more and more I go over this the more I love it. If you recall I attempted one with 256 teams. I only documented two of the series I did on here and was halfway through the first round before it just did not feel right and the results I was getting were unsatisfactory. Your idea of doing full seasons with groups absolutely stunned me. Brilliant idea. When 14 comes out I may do a tournament of my own at some point implementing the ideas I read of here. Will definitely be following this!

Yes I think i remember your short lived effort at this idea, it definately takes some dedication and patience but savoring every part of it is to me what is so fun about it and the game.

Looking forward to seeing your own version soon and encourage to give it a try, I always thought I was the fortunate one to be able to do this rather then just follow it.

Thanks for following

Now get back to the '62 Yankees comeback!

Nice job as always though, I've been enjoying following along!
