Toyoda won the Rookie of the Year award in Japan, hitting .281 with 27 homers in real life, and is a member of the Japanese Baseball Hall of Fame, inducted in 2006. 1956 - Lennon breaks record with 59
Bob Lennon set the single season home run record when he clubbed 59 homers, breaking his own record of 57 which he set in 1950. As a reminder, Lennon hit just one home run in the majors in real life, but was a minor league slugger. Joe Bauman, Tookie Gilbert, and Stan Musial all debuted on the career home run list. Musial at 35 looks to be the next member of the 400 club to fail to hit 400 in the replay. With 11 actual members of the 400 home run club active, it's a race to see who will actually reach the 400 club first, or at this point will anyway? Dropping off were Henry Cote and Frank Kelleher, each with 237, and Bob Garretson with 236. 1959 - Gilbert leads league/Musial retires
Tookie Gilbert hit 46 home runs this year to lead the league and increase his career total to 372 home runs. In real life Gilbert hit just 7. Meanwhile, Stan Musial makes it 0-6 when he retired with 240 career homers, falling short of his 475 actual home runs. At this point I'd call this whole dynasty a failure - I'm definitely not getting the results I expected with too many disappointments and too many surprises. Charlie Gilbert retired with 433 career home runs. He put up a big 5 in real life. Hank Thompson and Jim Baxes debuted on the leaderboards, with Frank Reiger (244) and Stan Musial (240) falling off. 7/15/1960- Tookie Gilbert hits 400th
Tookie Gilbert hit career home run number 400, becoming the seventh player to do so. Gilbert hit just 7 home runs in real life. Combined with his brother Charlie who hit 7 in real life, the Gilbert brothers, now both members of the 400 home run club have really exceeded expectations. |

1960 - Gilbert leads league second year in a row
Tookie Gilbert led the league for the second year in a row after hitting 45 home runs, after passing 400 home runs for his career earlier in the year. Willard Brown retired with 484 career home runs in 3rd place on the all-time home run list. Brown hit just one home run in real life, but played in the Negro Leagues and was nicknamed 'Home Run' for his slugging prowess. Alonso Perry retired with 272 career home runs. Perry hit 28 home runs in the minor leagues. Don Eggert and Mickey Mantle debuted on the career leaderboards, with Dan Lally (255) and Charlie Keller (250) both dropping off. 5/19/1961 - Lennon new Home Run King
After tieing Mule Suttles atop the career home run list yesterday, Bob Lennon wasted little time by hitting a two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning for career home run number 560 to put the Minnesota Twins up 2-0 against the Royals. The Twins would go on to win 12-4, although that would be Lennon's only hit of the night. The 32 year old from Brooklyn is playing his first season in Minnesota as the Washington Senators relocated to Minnesota this year to play as the Twins and Lennon is giving the hometown fans something to cheer about. |

9/26/1962-Tookie Gilbert hits 500th
Tookie Gilbert became the third player to reach 500 career home runs today. The Gilberts are definitely enjoying this replay, as Tookie's brother Charlie already hit 400 home runs in his career. Neither had much big league success, and were minor league sluggers. |

1962 - Lennon leads league again
Bob Lennon once again leads the league in home runs, hitting 54 to bring his career totals to 656. Al Rosen debuted on the career leaderboard last year, and retired this year with 274 career home runs. In real life Rosen hit 192 homers. Mickey Mantle collected his 2000th hit of his career and 300th home run. With 311 career home runs at 31 years old Mantle looks to have the best chance of breaking the streak of the actual 400 club. Duke Snider at 36 won't get there, and Mathews, Mays, and Banks at 31 have a long way to go. Given that Mantle has hit the 300 club at least, I think he can make it by the time he hits 37 or so.
