Hmmm...as a longtime Mizzou fan, it appears that the folks on this board may have a point.

I believe that there was an informal offer to Mizzou, from the Big 10, about month ago.

SOMEONE at Mizzou couldn't keep their mouth shut, and this lead to a series of events where Nebraska bolted...and the Big 10 offer was withdrawn for Mizzou.

As far as the Texas-Missouri anger, most of the Missouri anger is completely justified, from Missouri's perspective, such as when the Big 12 REFUSED to even consider the Big 12 Championship game to be played outside of Texas.

So much for Dan Beebe's insistence that Jim Delany would let him know first if Big 10 is inviting any Big 12 schools.

Delany contacted Beebe this morning about the Nebraska invitation before everything is made official. Maybe Beebe is indeed the first one to know about it.

For what it's worth, I think Missouri will eventually get into a 16 team Big Ten. Nebraska made more sense to take as a 12th member because there's still a (very slim) chance this might just stop at 12 and if it does, Nebraska is the bigger draw for football. I think the Big Ten is just going to see what happens with the Pac 10/Big 12 South deal and what Notre Dame finally decides to do before committing themselves further.

It's not out of the realm of possibility that the Big 10 picks up three teams total: Nebraska, Notre Dame, and Texas. It's unlikely for several reasons, but could you imagine that?

Isn't Texas to Pac-10 pretty much a done deal?

There are are some reports that Texas and the other Big 12 South schools are weighing whether a 10-team Big 12 could still be feasible before jumping. There's also the possibility that Texas doesn't go to the Pac 10 without Texas A & M, who might apparently go to the SEC if they can work some arrangement out regarding their big rivalry game if the two aren't in the same conference.

Oh, they'll sure follow through the motions and do that. Kind of like how Nebraska is only deciding to join the Big 10 today.

It's just that the decision has been made, and it would not be changed unless something else happens.

According to Chip Brown, Texas AD already told the coaches that the effort to save Big 12 has failed.

I don't think so. I think there's just an assumption that Texas and its surrounding schools will receive (and accept) a Pac-10 invite. But there are major hangups with that, primarily the distance involved for non-revenue sports. What women's field hockey team wants to travel from Austin, TX (U of Texas) to Seattle (U of Washington)? That's over 2200 miles, or a 4-5 day round trip on a bus. And Oregon isn't much closer. Everyone would have to fly everywhere. And if UT football ever struggles, the athletic department would be hemorrhaging funds.

Texas to the Pac 10 is impractical for every reason outside of football. It'll still probably happen, but I'll believe it when I see it.

It's not just an assumption. The invite is already promised by Pac-10, and if you believe Chip Brown, who has been pretty accurate throughout all this, that everybody other than Texas A&M has decided to join Pac-10. If Texas A&M doesn't join, they'll get Utah or Kansas instead.

For the other issues you are describing, I think the solution is already pretty obvious. Pac-10 already said it's going to be two divisions that might not even have a conference football championship game between the two divisions. So for all practical purposes it's really two conferences that are creating a TV network together. There isn't really going to be many minor sports teams traveling from Texas to Washington kind of issue.

It's pretty common for minor sports teams to form leagues separately from the football and basketball conferences anyway. San Diego State soccer is in Pac-10.

And really if Pac-16 got two BCS automatic bids as it wished, it's basically just two conferences with a revived SWC and Pac 8. Then they'll have a joint TV channel that focuses on SWC earlier in the evening and focuses on Pac 8 later in the evening.

One thing to remember about the potential Pac 16 is that there really wouldn't be much travel between the two divisions, it would almost be like two separate leagues under one roof. The occasional trip from Seattle to Austin would almost be like non-conference games, I'm pretty sure every school has at least one out-of-area road trip in every sport anyway, the only difference here would be that trip now counts within the conference.

Think about 12-team conferences as they exist now and how much teams from opposite divisions play each other, now add in two extra divisional foes and cross-divisional play decreases even more.

It's definitely a longshot but one thing that makes me think Texas might be apprehensive about jumping is that they would not be able to dominate the old-line Pac 10 schools the way they did the old Big 8 schools. If Texas manages to hold the Big 12 together they might be able to still get their own tv deal that's been talked about for awhile, that definitely wouldn't be the case in the Pac 16. And if there is a championship game, it will definitely alternate between LA and Dallas at a bare minimum, as opposed to having a semi-permanent home at Jerry World.

Those are not things people just starting to think about though. None of those are new factors. To change a decision, you'd need to learn about something that you didn't originally know or expect. That would be things like SEC making completely new moves.

The news today is that Texas, Texas Tech, Oklahoma, and Oklahoma St. will go into the Pac-10 this next week.

Oklahoma is a firm..and their AD stated that he is only waiting for Texas to announce, probably Tuesday of this next week.

So, among Nebraska's chief complaints was that the Big 12 championship was going to be held in Jerry Dome for at least the next few years, close to the Oklahoma and Texas overlords of the Big 12. However, upon pushing the Big 10 to a conference championship game, where do you think the most likely site for its championship game is? Almost certainly Indianapolis, close to the the Ohio State and Michigan (and Penn State, sorta) overlords.

The location of the championships game surely is nothing comparing to how revenues are distributed though. They don't have socialism in Big 12, so Texas got everything. The location of the championship game is just the icing.

The main difference is Indianapolis is just about as close to a central location as you can have in the current Big Ten area and it would be reasonable to host the championship game there every year. The real equivalent would be if the title game were in Detroit or Cleveland every year.

The Big 12 didn't have that kind of ideal central location so the fair thing to do is/was always rotate their title game every year between a northern city (Kansas City or St. Louis) and a southern one (Dallas/Houston/San Antonio). I'd have to check but I think that's what they had done before locking it into Jerry World for the foreseeable future.

I know there's no way to prove it but I just feel the Big 12 was one second away from not having Nebraska bolt (if you catch my meaning there.)
