BASEBALL MONTHLY March 1878 Friends Hope To Finally Win ![]() The Chicago White Stockings opened camp again after a long offseason. The taste of coming so close to a championship remains with the team as they were one game away from their first title. Still there remains optimism as the team did end with the best record in baseball and most of their roster coming ack for a repeat performance. LEAGUES TOP PLAYERS PER THE SCOUTSIn the midst of it all quite a friendship has developed between two of the stars not only of the team but also of the entire league. Al Spalding and Cap Anson are almost inseperable these days and share laughs and a smoke whenever they get the chance. The 27 year old star pitcher wants nothing more then a world championship and is leaning on the expertise of his manager and friend to get it. Anson is in charge ofthe club, but remains a players manager and keeps a loose and generous atmosphere around the dugout. Spalding hasnt been silent about his ambitions to manage a team someday but for now is happy to take a backseat, "this is Caps team" he says with a smile, "he is the General, i just take orders" Anson is more then happy to have such an arm that won 27 games last season and has one question going into the year, "How hard would it be to win the world title, the MVP, and the outstanding pitcher of the year?" In fact neither player would like nothing better as there is no doubt their strong relationship sets the tone for this team. But to answer Anson's question Spalding but it simple, "forget the last two, lets just win" Most fans in Chicago say amen to that. The White Stockings did make a couple of roster changes going into the new season. The team parted ways with your and popular outfielder Frank McCarton, who had played 7 seasons with the team. McCarton had lost his job as a starter late last season, and is now part of the makeup of the St. Louis Browns. The only major addition the team made was to add strength up the middle. Paul Hines will be a part of the outfield as the center fielder signed with the team from St. Lous and bring some more speed to the team. Hines batter .255 last season with 19 RBI and 8 steals. In other notes for the team two former players for Chicago called it a career and retired in the offseason. Fergy Malone the former standout catcher for the team had enough pro ball and returned to his native Ireland. Frank Fleet, another member of the original team also retired after an average career batting .248, Fleet pitched and also played in 109 games for the team. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BASEBALL MONTHLY April 1878 Quest Leads Chicago In Opening Month The Chicago White Stockings opened the first month of the season tied for first place with a 6-3 record. The team ended the month on a high with a 5 game winning streak. ![]() The team is getting quite a performance out of its twenty five year old second baseman Johnny Quest. Quest is batting .400 and leads the entire league in runs batted in with 13. In a 12-7 Reds win over the Reds, Quest went 4-5 and drove in four runs. Along with Quest, Count Sensenderfer is contributing as well. The Count has always been a streaky hitter but seems to have committed himself this season so far, as his starting position has been under attack by new signing Paul Hines. Sensenderfer has played in 5 of the nine games and has 12 hits in 21 atbats for a .571 clip! Sensenderfer has also drove in 6 runs and as always is playing well with the glove. Will manager Anson stick with Sensenderfer o a daily basis or is he under pressure to play Hines because of the amount of money the team is payng him? Quest was named batter of the month. Al Spalding on the other hand had a difficult start to the season. Spalding has been a traditional slow starter and this season went 1-3 in his first four starts with a 4.57 ERA. As the month went on however Spalding sparkled again and evened out his record at 8-8. Its appears to be all Chicago and Boston early in the year in the National League. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BASEBALL MONTHLY May 1878 Chicago No Hits, Still Win! ![]() Candy Cummings of the Brooklyn had it all working on the mound against the Chicago White Stockings on May 22nd. Cummings pitched one of the most dominant games in the history of baseball as he didnt allow a single hit and didnt walk a single man. Still for Cummings one problem remained, he lost the game.
Throwing only the second no hitter in league history, Cummings was given no support on offense and his defense also turned his back on him committing 4 errors. Al Spalding of the Whites was alsmost as sharp on this day and matched Cmmings inning for inning. The Whites did get a run in the 5th inning when Cap Anson got on second after a 2 base error. Cummings then threw a wild pitch as Anson clearly was trying to rattle the pitcher. On the next pitch catcher Tom Barlow let the ball get past him and Anson crossed the plate without a hit. Spalding in revigored confidence closed the game out and Chicago got the win despite being no hit in one of baseball's oddities. Cummings was obviously frustrated with the loss and his teams effort behind him after the game. "I cant believe I lost the game!" said Cummings, "go figuire, what are the odds of something like this happening?" The Whites overall stayed in the race with a 6-4 month. With a 12-7 overall record Chicago is a single game behind Boston, the Whites did suffer a sweep at the hands of the Red Caps earlier in the month. ![]() Ned Williamson the young third baseman of the Whites who had such a promising season last year is a amjor concern. The young man just cant seem to get out of his current slump, and many wonder if he will even finish the year with the club. Williamson is hitting .158 after the two months and is a big liability in the lineup. Will Anson keep putting him in the lineup.

BASEBALL MONTHLY June 1877 Chicago Red Hot In First Fans in Chicago are really going to enjoy this summer it appears as the Chicago White Stockings are playing the best ball in the National League, with a record of 21-8. The White Stockings lead the division by 3 games. Chicago went 9-1 in the month of June including winning 8 in a row. The team is led by Al Spalding who had a maginificent month and won the pitcher of the month award for an incredible 12th time. Spalding has a 17-8 record with a 1.84 ERA. On top of all this, Spalding is making a diffrence with the bat, the pitcher is hitting .324, good enough for 8th in the league. The reason behind the hitting success? "Cap has given me some good tips" says Spalding with a smile. The White Stockings also were quite busy off the field. The team resigned a number of their players including Al Spalding. Also inking new deals were Count Sensenderfer and Johnny Quest. Players left out in the cold appear to include long time star Steve King, King is 36 years old and is showing some signs of his age batting .242 for the season, a career low. ![]() Other players like Mike McGeary and Cherokee Fisher are still hoping for new deals. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1877 Amatuer Draft The top picks in the recent draft were as follows: 1. Dan Brouthers 1B - Brooklyn Atlantics Big Dan was the top pick in the draft by the worst team in the league. Batting from the left side of the plate some scouts have called him a "genius" at the plate. Few expect this 20 year old from Michigan to miss. He has been inserted in the Atlantics linrup from day 1. 2. Lee Richmond P - Philadelphia Athletics Out of Sheffield Alabama, Richmond is a great prospect that has a great delivery from the left side. His personaity is even bigger then his game according to some. His stories off the field rival those on the field. A very hard thrower who can strike out his share, Richmond has jumped right into the A's rotation. 3. Harry McCormick P - St. Louis Browns Quite a dropoff from McCormick to Richmond. This right hander had variable stuff and many are not predicting he is a star at the next level. Out of Syracuse Harry is said to lack a bit in confidence and could struggle against the league's better hitters. He started his Browns career in the minor leagues. 4. John O'Rourke OF - Boston Red Caps ORourke has a good glove and will provide depth for the talented Boston lineup. A tall capable hitter ORourke does seem to have a loop in his swing and one scout says they doubt he will be able to hit .240. Still with the track record Boston has of making stars, he is worth keeping an eye on. 5. George Gore OF - Cincinnati Reds How he dropped to #5 many are wondering. His nickname of "Piano legs" speaks for itself. Gore has his troubles with some coordination and defensive duties, but one thing Gore can do without a doubt is hit. He is a fine contact hitter and many are saying the Reds have a made a steal with this pick. 6. Hardy Richardson 3B - Cleveland Blues Old True Blue Hardy brings some grit to the Cleveland team and steps right into the starting 3rd base job. Still very inconsistent on both the offensive and defensive end scouts are reminded that Richardson picked up baseball rather late in his youth. There are glimpses of true talent here. 7. Jack Glasscock 2B - Boston Red Caps This little know infielder from Wheeling Illinois has his work cut out for him. Many scouts are predicting a mediocore career at best but there seems to be much heart and desire in this player, something that fits in very well with 2 time champion Boston. 8. Pete Hotaling OF - Chicago White Stockings Many have said Pete can run and move like a "monkey", take that as it may he has potential and a chance to replace Steve King as a mainstay in the outfield. Hotaling is a pure linedrive hitter but many wonder as scouts if he can handle big league pitching. Hotaling is from the big city of New York and may be able to handle city pressure. |

BASEBALL MONTHLY July 1878 Cy Bentley Sets Standard ![]() For the first time in the history of the game a player has pitched and won a total of 200 games. Who else but to accomplish this feat then Cy Bentley of the Boston Red Caps? Bentley beat the Cincinnati Reds on July 28th and has proved to be the best pitcher the league has known. Bentley is out of East Haven and pitching close to home in Boston allowed him a confort and confidecne level early in his career. The right hander has won alsmost every award in his career including the pitcher of the year award 6 times. And the 27 year old doesnt seem to be slowing down. He has amassed a career record of 201-142 in over 3000 innings pitched and 361 games started. Bentley 445 men and has an ERA of 2.33. Coming into the league few scouts thought he would be this good as he was described as having less then good stuff, but his command on the mound can be undenied as he pitches as much with his brain then he does with his arm. No doubt however what Bentley is most proud of. "Winning two championships in Boston is what means the most" No doubt at his age Bentley will be looking to win 200 more games and win more trophies. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Chicago Still in First; Anson player of the month The player/manager for the Chicago White Stockings is leading the way as he always does. Chicago has the best record in the league at 26-12 but is in a division with another powerhouse, the 24-14 Boston Red Caps. Chicago only leads the race by 2 games and with 2 full months left to play fans are anticipating the best National League pennant race they have ever seen. Anson batting .362, second in the league ans has driven in 25 runs while scoring a league leading 33. When some players like Steve King (.220), Dave Pierson (.217) and Ned Williamson (.171) not carrying their weight, Anson has been better then ever, batting .353 with runners in scoring position. Rookie Pete Hotaling has made his debut and already has 6 hits in 14 atbats. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BASEBALL MONTHLY August 1878 Whites In a Financial Pickle? A whale of a pennant race continues in the National League as the Chicago White Stockings lead the Boston Red Caps by 2 games as both teams are sporting the best records of the year. On another front however the Chicago team caould be in some peril. The team is built to win now and know if they dont pull the trick this season, they can be a very diffrent team next season. The team is hooked on a number of big contracts including those of Cap Anson, Count Sensenderfer, Johnny Quest and Al Spalding. This however means that much of the money has run out for securing some of their other stars that will be demanding more money. The services of Mike McGeary, Hugh Campbell, Cherokee Fisher, and Paul Hines are all very much in doubt as rumor has it the team is in no position to shell out anymore money. Management was remaining focus on the current chances of the team. "We arnt worried about next year's team. We plan on winning next season" Fans are bracing for a good finish in both leagues as in the American side Philadelphia, Baltimore and St. Louis are all seperated by 2 games. The baseball finish this season may be the best one we have seen. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BASEBALL MONTHLY September 1878 Incredible Heartbreak for Chicago ![]() Players were counting down the magic number, fans were already planning for their World Series trips to Philadelphia as the Chicago White Stockings were one game away from the National League pennant with 5 games to play.
Having just beat Boston 4-2, Chicago had two more with the Red Caps and three more in Cincinnati. All they needed was one win to at least insure a one game playoff. Ladies and Gentlemen the White Stockings lost them all. And the Boston Red Caps won them all, to take the National League pennant by a single game, overturining the team that lead the league for the duration of the season. No one in Chicago could believe it. However with every loss the pressure mounted. Al Spalding lost his stuff, pitching with a 5.09 ERA in his last four starts, and clearly feeling the pressure as a player who has never won the big one. Suicide watches were on alert late night in Chicago as the team dropped their last game of the season to the Reds 8-6, while Boston just couldnt be stopped. Never has the game seen such a late season collapse, and a late season run. Manager Cap Anson also wasnt much help over the last few games. The player manager batted .176 in the last 5 games, definately not leading by example. "Its hard to describe the pain we feel right now" said Pops Anson as many of his other players avoided the media all together, "Its going to be the longest winter of our lives." So its Boston, yes Boston and not Chicago, who are going on to the World Series. The Red Caps will meet the Philadelphia Athletics, and will look for revenge from their 1876 loss.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------------------------- League News 83/233 .356Deacon White has won his second batting title. White of the Boston Red Caps was part of the miracle winning team batting .356. White is also a favorite for league MVP. Reds Fire Manager and GM The Cincinnati Reds and their fans have seen enough. Finishing the season 25-35 the Reds have cleaned house in the front office and let go their manager and general manager. The Reds have one of the more talented rosters in the league but have only managed one pennant in the 8 year league history. |

BASEBALL MONTLY October 1878 Athletics win 4th Title The Philadelphia Athletics proved once again they know how to win the big one. They frustrated the Boston Red Caps and the National League once again by winning the World Series 4 games to 2. The A's won all three of their games at home giving them their 4th world championship, the most in baseball history.
A recap of the series: Game 1
WP: Lee Richmond LP: John Greason Young Charley Jones goes 3-5 driving in 3 runs and Lee Richmond goes the distance for the A's. Game 2
WP: Jim McCormick LP: Cy Bentley The A's beat Bentley and depend on another solid outing by a pitcher, this time Jim McCormick. A three run 8th inning broke the game open and the four Boston errors came at the worse time. Game 3
WP: Flip Lafferty LP: Lee Richmond A great game as Charlie Pabor ties the game in the bottom of the ninth inning. In the 11th inning an error by short stop Jack Burdock allowed the go ahead run to score and the Red Caps get their first win. Game 4
WP: John Greason LP: Jim Mckormick Boston is able to tie the series as John ORourke sets a World Series and modern day record by driving in 7 runs in a single game. ORourke also hit the first grand slam in World Series history. Game 5
WP: Bobby Mathews LP: Martin Malone A four run 5th inning does the trick for the A's as they leave home with a win. A John Hatfield triple with two men on is the diffrence. Game 6
WP: Lee Richmond LP: John Greason Behimd Lee Richmond the A's win their championship. With two runs in the eighth inning and shutting down Boston with the tying run on 2nd base in the ninth was the storyline. Charley Jones could be considered the MVP of the series batting .440 in the six games with 2 home runs and 5 RBI. |

BASEBALL MONTHLY March 1879 Whites Say Goodbye to King ![]() Recovering from the heartbreak of last season the Chicago White Stockings are looking to the new season with optimism and hope. The team did retool over the offseason mostly to balance their financial sheets. In the process the Whites had to make some tough decisions. The team let go short stop Mike McGeary and outfielder Paul Hines who were both high earners and spent only one year with the team. These changes did not cut as deep however as the loss of outfielder and fan favorite Steve King, who was let go by the team after he batted only .227 last season. King who turned 36 years old did catch on with a new team, the Baltimore Orioles. "We really wish Steve the best" said Cap Anson, "he had been here since the first White Stockings game was played, and he meant alot to this team and city. But that is baseball." For his career King won the 1872 MVP award and also was rookie of the year in 1871. King is a .314 career hitter 27 triples and 221 RBI. King also was the franchise leader in runs scored. King was greeted at Union Station before leaving for Baltimore by numerous fans and well wishers. Thanks were given for his 8 years in Chicago. The team did resign pitching arms Hugh Campbell and Cherokee Fisher. The only major free agent signing was 25 year old first baseman Jack Manning. Manning will platoon with Jim Devlin at first base. With spring training in full swing the team also suffered two significant injuries. Joe Quest (thumb) and Terry Larkin (bicep) are both expected to miss opening day. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- League Changes Schedule The longest season in baseball history awaits as teams agreed to an expanded and balanced 84 game schedule. The jump is up from a 60 game season that was the norm for the last 6 years. The increase in games will increase league revenue greatly due to many more attended games. Many league records will obviously fall with the expanded schedule. Teams are also trying to compensate for fatigue, especially on the pitching mound with the extra games. The World Series will remain the same. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Off season tidbits

BASEBALL MONTHLY April 1879 Cubs 8-5 Start; Spalding Wins 200 The Chicago White Stockings and their new look opened the season in the thick of the competition, pacing themselves to an 8-5 record good enough for second place in the National League. The talk of the league however are the Cincinnati Reds and their star hitter George Gore. The Reds are finally living up to some potential and have an 11-2 start. Gore has been dominating the league in hitting in his second season. "Piano Legs" may not be the fastest man in the league but he is great with the bat. Gore has 30 hits in 56 atbats and is hitting .536. The White Stockings and the rest of the national league may have a long season with this 21 year old center fielder, who is already a star. How dominant of an April have the Reds had? As a team are batting an incredible .339 as a team and have scored 85 runs, 40 better then what they have allowed. ![]() With the Whites only three games back, their was a nice moment early in the month as Al Spalding became the second pitcher in baseball history to win 200 games. Spalding who has started the most games and thrown the most innings in league history, earned his historic win on April 9th in a 9-4 win over Brooklyn. Although quite an ackmomplishment, there is no dounbt that the motivating factor for the 28 year old pitcher is to finally win a championship, something he hasnt achieved yet in his 8 seasons. Other players that have stepped up this month for the Whites include Mike Morgan who had a 21 game hitting streak broken dating back to last season. Also Cherokee Fisher has rekindled his glory days with a good month on the mound starting 4 games and compliling a 1.08 ERA. Jim Devlin is also batting .362 for the month. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BASEBALL MONTHLY May 1879 Pitching Wavers With Team With spot starter specialist Terry Larkin out until late May the White Stockings and manager Cap Anson had to make due with patchwork for a second starter. The plan worked in April but came apart in May, as the Whites went 4-10 for the month and fell 5 games behind the division leading Reds. ![]() Cherokee Fisher was roughed up in the month of May and his inspirational run was over early in May. Fisher had opponents scorch him to a .328 clip and an ERA of 4.71. Fisher lost all three of his starts including allowing 10 earned runs in a loss to Brooklyn on May 16th. Larkin was able to return at the end of the month, most likely ending any other starts for Fisher short of another emergency. Al Spalding also ended the month on a low with a three game losing streak. The team ERA is at 2.78, third in the National League. The real surge of the month came from the Boston Red Caps who were tired about hearing their slump in April. Boston went an incredible 13-1 in the month, a new record, and jumped right back into the race, one game behind the Reds who due in large part to Boston, ended the month 6-8. Mart King and Deacon White were well over .500 in their last 12 games and the great Cy Bentley is back to his old dominant self. Chicago did get a performance out of an unexpected sourse in outfielder Art Croft. Croft batted .353 and is keen on earning a spot in a crowded outfield that includes top draft pick Pete Hotaling who is batting .290. Doc Bushong has won the starting catching job as Dave Pierson just cant get consistent with the bat, hitting only .247 on the season. Ned Williamson seems as though he may never get hot again as the young infielder lost his job and is batting only .200. ![]() In the upcoming June draft the White Stockings are said to be in the market for a catcher or starting pitcher. The focus remains on the recent slump and the season, as another poor month will bury their chances in 1879.

BASEBALL MONTHLY June 1879 Anson Signs 2 Year Extension Chicago management reached into their pockets this month and secured the services of their team's most popular player both on and off the field as well as their leader, Cap Anson. ![]() Anson signed an extension as rumors of ongoing negotiations had been circulating, some saying Anson may have wanted the chance to try his luck elsewhere. In the end all was well however as Cap will be with the team for at least 2 more seasons. The deal is for a hefty $5900 over 2 seasons, making Anson the higest paid player in the league again, over $300 dollars more then Ross Barnes of the Red Caps. Anson has played the most games in the league and has been incredibly versatile, avoiding injury almost exclusively. The 27 year old player manager in fact has only missed one game in his career, and keeps himself in top shape. For his career Anson is a .336 career hitter and driven in 267 runs. Cap has improved his play greatly in the field, as his first two years he led the league in errors. For many it is very simple, when Anson playes well the Whites play well. "Its time to concetrate on baseball only now" said Cap before a recent game, "obviously I wanted to continue my career here in Chicago and Im glad to do so." CHICAGO ADDS HELP IN DRAFT The White Stockings took six players in the recent amatuer draft and some of the prospects have already contributed and have many in the organization excited. Here is a draft recap for Chicago. Round 1 Fred Dunlap - 2nd Base Freddy "Sure Shot" Dunlap is a player Chicago is very happy to get and in fact many think would never fall to the 6th pick where the Whites got him. The 20 year old man from Philly fills a major void right out in the Chicago lineup and has the scouts raving about his ability with the bat. Dunlap is sure to be a Chicago fixture at the position for many years, as close to a sure thing as you can get, but havent we heard these things before? For the sake of their scouting reputation, this time Chicago has to get it right. Round 2 John Reily - 1st Base The 20 year old giant from Cincinnati was someone the Whites couldnt pass on. His 6 ft 3 frame make him a huge target at first base and the team is hoping his bat will eventually catch up to his defenive ability. With Jim Devlin in his last of a contract, Raily may be the man made for the job. Round 3 Frank Mountain - P The 20 year old right hander has electric stuff and again Chicago is thrilled someone with such talent dropped to them. Chicago is in need for more pitching as Cherokee Fisher and his struggles this season show. Mountain is a bright young kid who will benefit the club straight out. Round 4 Sam Trott - C Trott a 20 year old backstop from Rochester New York is hoping to make a contribution. The Whites are still very disapointed with Dave Pierson and are looking for answers behind the dish. Scouts are skeptical. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BASEBALL MONTHLY July 1879 Analysis; Pitching resides in American League With the league growing in popularityb in its 8th season there is still a distinctive divide and diffrence between the two sub leagues that make up pro baseball. In regards to championships the Amercian League leads the waywinning 6 to the National's two. The American side has also won the last four. This is an overall suprize as many thought the National League was much stronger upon the leagues inception with the likes of Chicago and Boston. Of course the biggest diffrence maker has been the Philadelphia Athletics who have won 4 championships and are a class organization from top to bottom, the A's have yet to lose in the World Series. Playing styles between the two leagues have also taken diffrent directions. The American League by a large margin is a better pitching side and doesnt have the big stars with the bat, in truth most of the big stars in general reside in the National League, names like Anson, Bentely, and Barnes. The American League has an average ERA per season of 2.39. On the contrary the National League ERA resides around 3.15, an exceptional diffrence. The big hitters in the National League obviously make it the better hitting side. Averages comparing the two leagues show a .253 average in the American League and a .282 in the National. Overall of course league play has increased greatly and improved as has attendence. The errors are down from the first two seasons considerably ad new talent from the youth of cities is making diffrence, as is better and more refined equipment. The games future looks very bright indeed. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- White Stockings 11 out Chicago continues a very disapointing season as they are well behind the division leading Boston Red Caps by 11 games. The Boston side is running away with the division with an 9 game lead going into August. The big question in Chicago is the contract status of pitcher Al Spalding. Salding is having one of his weakest season's ever (13-16, 2.90) but still remains one of the better pitchers in the game. Mum is the word as Spalding's contract is running out this fall. Many feel with the money spent to resign Cap Anson, the team may not have the rescourses to meet the star pitchers demands. More of course to come on this later. WHITE STOCKINGS STATS

BASEBALL MONTHLY August 1879 Fists Fly As American Race Heats Up Over the years competition in this relatively young league has reached a fever pitch and the rules of winning seem to include an anything goes attitude. The intensity couldnt be any higher in the American League as the Baltimore Orioles and the Philadelphia Athletics are tied in first place with a month of the season remaining. Boston has all but wrapped up the National League for weeks now. Things boiled completely over in a recent game in on August 16th in the intense heat of Newington Park in Baltimore. In a tight game between the Orioles and the Cleveland Blues George Bradley plunked Oriole third baseman Jimmy Halinan and after exchanging some words, the Oriole batter charged the mound. With little control and one of the ugliest incidents in league history, both benches and some fans cleared the and a free for all insued. It took a good 20 minutes for order to be restroed and the game to continue. The league had to react accordingly and suspended both Halinan and Bradley for 2 games each. Players on the Oriole team were sure that Cleveland was working for Philadelphia and trying to injure one of their players. The season now boils to the limit as both teams go forward and the two teams will meet 6 more times including the final three games of the season. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CHICAGO HAS GOOD MONTH The White Stockings got back on track a bit and went 10-4 in the month. Chicago is only one game under .500 and has refused to quit even though the season may be lost. Al Spalding may not be a White for very long because of his contract, but he is sure making a good case to stay. Spalding was pitcher of the month and pitched two shutouts, including one against the Boston Red Caps. Fred Dunlap is also coming around, the rookie was named rookie of the month and is batting .311 in his first season. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BASEBALL MONTLY September 1879 Orioles Take Their Second Pennant The race to the end of the 1879 Baseball season was cleared at the finish line with some distance by the Baltimore Orioles and the Boston Red Caps who will meet in the 9th addition of the World Series. ![]() The Rec Caps of course culminated a dominant season and took home their 6th National League pennant. The Red Caps under the rules of the extended season won the most games in history at 57 wins and 27 losses, 20 games over .500. Keeping in mind that the team started 3-10 this season. The Red Caps are led by the strongest lineup in the league and the best pitcher the game has ever seen in Cy Bentley. Bentley had maybe his best season ever, going 28-12 with a 1.85 ERA. ![]() The higher drama was in the American league but there the Baltimore Orioles did their business and ended the race sooner then expected. Baltimore ended three games better then the Athleticis and wrapped up the series by winning 5 out of 6 against their rivals who seemed to be slowing down as the season came to a close. Baltimore was led by their star pitcher as well, The Only Nolan, who was 22-15 with a 1.44 ERA. Nolan also threw a record 8 shutouts this season, proving that when he is disciplined and on, he can be untouchable.
So the World Series is set with high expectations. Here in Chicago the White Stockings ended the season 40-44 and in third place. Al Spalding may have pitched his final game for the club and capped a fine season winning 25 games. The team is said not to have the money that Spalding is asking for, and he as well as Jim Devlin and Cherokee Fisher have likely played their last games in Chicago. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
---------------------------------------------------------------------- Barnes Wins Another 141/362 .390Ross Barnes of the Red Caps won his third batting title and flirted with .400 all season long. Barnes has proven time and time again that he is aong the elite of the league and is the engine behind the best team in baseball. 99/305 .325Cal McVey takes home a batting title for the 2nd time in his career. McVey has found his stroke again and is proving that even on a bad team, stars can shine. |

The Baltimore Orioles beat the Boston Red Sox 4 games to 2 leaving the New England team only 2-4 in its World Series appearances. A breakdown of the series and a closer look: Game 1
WP: Cy Bentley LP: Joe Borden Cy Bentley at his best had his way with the Orioles. When Cy is on, no one can touch him and he shut down the Orioles allowing only six hits in the complete game. Ross Barnes drove in two as the Red Caps played like true favorites today. Game 2
WP: John Greason LP: The Only Nolan S: Harry Arundel Both starters got in trouble early and let up 4 run first innings. The Red Caps with their big stars came out on top in the end again. Denny Mack came through with a big hit and people were beginning to think sweep as Boston left home up 2 games to none. Game 3
WP: Joe Borden LP: Cy Bentley This was a very ugly game in a rain storm as both teams made 6 errors. Cy Bentley was openly frustrated with his team that couldnt play their game. Baltimore got three in a sixth inning that gave them a comfortable lead, Clipper Flynn made two crucial errors. Game 4
WP: The Only Nolan LP: John Greason A George Bechtel double cleared the bases in the first inning and the Orioles took the early lead they needed behind Nolan. Game 5
WP: Joe Borden LP: Cy Bentley George Hall went 3 for 3 and drove in two as the Orioles took the crucial game of the series in front of a full house at Newington Park. With the slim lead against Cy Bently the Orioles behind Joe Borden did the job under pressure squashing rally after rally.
