The main blocker that I've seen when trying to do this manually and using Waivers and DFA is players either not being able to be placed the in the minors without going through waivers (if they are out of options years) or refusing the assignment because they can (and should).

What I'm hoping to see added to the game with Rehab starts is:
  1. A new player status called "Rehab" added
  2. Long term injuries (think six weeks or more) to have a discernible impact on a players performance when coming off the DL. Right now, any short term effects (I.E. rustiness) and rehab starts are assumed and the player simply is available to be brought off the DL. I've suggested Markus tie the D-To-D injury % into this so that a player suffering a long term injury has something like an 80% hit on their performance coming off the DL (that number based on the type of player, type and length of the injury) and gradually works back to 0% using rehab starts.
  3. The ability to bypass the waiver and option years rules so that players CAN legally be assigned to minor league teams to make rehab starts without having to go through waivers (and possibly be lost)
  4. Some rules in place so that players make no more than five minor league starts before their status is changed from Rehab and they are placed back on the active roster (or then being chosen to be formally waived and DFA). So that people don't forget about them. Any player with a status of Rehab and a DTD effect of 5% or less could, for example, return to normal status. This could always be configured via an "option" as well.

IMO that is not realistic. There aren't that many players who do rehab starts in the minors. Especially disagree with the 80% hit on performance. Even guys who have TJ surgery aren't that extreme. Some lose a lot, some very little. A lot of players do rehab at ST complexes, extra training, not necessarily in the minors. There can't be a blanket effect for all LT injured players, not realistic.

If they have options left and you don't mind burning one for something that doesn't usually do that.

Rehab seems like an extra procedural step that not necessary. Because if it were an option, everybody would send needed players to rehab. It's just an extra step. It would be like, during free agency, you make a player an offer, then the player accepts the offer, then you have to click a button to send the player a contract and wait for him to sign it and send it back to you. But we don't have to do those extra steps, in a sense, its taken care of in the background.

Same thing with injuries. When we get the message that a player will be out for 3 months. It's not that on that last day of the third month he's laying in bed unable to move and the next day he walks right out of the hospital and into the lineup. That 3 months covers what ever medical attention he needs, what ever rest he needs and what ever rehab he needs. When he comes back he's 100%. Instead of stepping us through the process, we just get the message that the player is ready.

The only way we'd need this is if they are allowing players to come back at less than 100%. i'm guessing this would be a pain to a lot of people, especially online. i hear enough complaints from guys that forget to protect players for the rule v draft and forget to make offers for salary arbitration.

I'm very excited to see the new draft features. The signing bonuses and draft-slotting is very cool.

Just gotta get through February... spring training is almost here!

MLB recommends a signing bonus for each draft pick, or slot, so I'm guessing there will be a recommended signing bonus associated with each draft pick. In baseball, there is no consequence (that I'm aware of) for going over slot other than the expense and some dirty glances. I'm assuming this slotting system wouldn't be enforced in the game either, as much as a guide as to what signing bonus is "appropriate" for any given pick.

What if rehab starts were just an option to have in the background in whatever percentage during the injury time? Maybe coupled with something similar to the day-to-day performance loss percentage thing tied into when they are in rehab. It would generate some minor league stats for these guys and you could watch their percentage rise and decide for yourself if you want that guy back in the majors a day or two early and risk re-injury/bad performance.

That works if you play without minors, but if you play with minors any rehab starts would have to take place in a league that exists in your game.

This is what I do in my own mind to handle the rehab thing. if someone is out for 2-3 months according to the game, I tell myself that the tail end of that period is the rehab/recovery period. his injury may have lasted 2 months, but the last few weeks was that recovery period.

I love all of the drafting changes, but with the pitching overhaul in X, drafting and development of pitchers was a little rough around the edges. Is there some work slated in that area? For example, with feeders, 2 80 potential 2 pitch pitchers, one has 4 endurance and is seen as a closer, one has 20 stam is seen as an SP project. The closer goes first round, the starter goes fifth round. The later is a far more valuable commodity. At worst, he's a closer.

Also, I'd still love a way to control the types of pitchers created in fictional historical leagues. Lights out closers in 1908 don't feel right. It limits fictional leagues to the modern era, which takes away an interesting part of the game.

Great points, and I do hope that a future iteration will include players who aren't 100%, but still able to take the field - if we choose - at some penalty. Fading DTD's (including potential proportional setback IF played) are a good idea for consideration.

You're not getting it. Historical play is an entirely different context. When the Tigers and Braves did the John Smoltz trade, was either GM able to pull up Smoltz' profile and see his future statistics or rely on personal foreknowledge of the guy's career? Of course not. But in OOTP that information is available. It's not a problem in an online league, because all the GMs are human and have access to the future information.

In a fictional baseball universe, you don't want the AI to be able to see the future. But we're talking HISTORICAL solo play here. And house rules don't solve the problem, because trades between AI clubs can still be absurd, and that can disrupt the entire balance of a league.

Now, if Markus already programmed OOTP 10 to include future value for rookie drafts, then I'm not asking for anything too radical here.

Aren't the types of pitches purely cosmetic? I don't think there is a difference between a 90 rated fastball and a 90 rated curve as far as gameplay goes.

It's not a comment about the pitches, but the relief pitchers and bullpen quality/composition. The modern bullpen, with a closer, setup man, lefty specialist, long man, etc. looks significantly different than a bullpen as little as 20 years ago. The game uses league strategy settings to artificially handle era's, but that's far from a good solution and it doesn't work at all for human managers. (Human managers abusing the modern bullpen and pitching fatigue is another subject entirely). The game generates the pieces for a modern bullpen, regardless of era. As a human manger, I'm expected to not optimize my bullpen usage to reflect the era. In reality, a quality young arm, like Papelbon, was developed and used as a starter. There was no consideration of using him as a reliever or closer. A simple setting to set the allocation of SP/RP/CL would make all the difference in the world for fictional historical leagues.

Much agreed. It would add a significant amount of strategy for the user, unlike the current system that really doesn't involve any decision making. When to bring back recovering players is a common point over which fans amuse themselves by debating. It would be equally fun to simulate.

Also, then the Mets could properly simulate their propensity to rush back (and re-injure) every one of their injured players as often as possible.

For Rule 5 Draft have it like in Real Life.
Home Run Derby? Voting for who gets in the Hall of Fame? Unretirements? Retirements in season.
Almost everybody who's been on the Injured List goes for a Rehab assignment.

Surprise! Not everyone - in fact my guess is hardly anyone - wants to play historical the way you do.
