FEATHERWEIGHT TITLE FIGHT CHAMPION Juan Manuel Marquez (15-1-1, 11 KO) VS #9 Eric Aiken (14-3, 12 KO) Marquez makes his first defense against a game Eric Aiken, whose power poses a legitimate threat. Marquez starts strong with a good first round, but Aiken answers in the second, landing a few hard blows inside. Marquez ramps it up a bit in the third setting up a heavy-hitting fourth round that ends with the crowd on its feet and both men land punishing blows pretty much for the duration as defense is cast aside. Though the round is even, it also seems to drain more from Aiken's tank than from Marquez, who settles in and begins to pile up the rounds. Aiken goes down in the 8th. He fires back for a last stand in the 9th, but Marquez weathers it and puts the now gassed Aiken down for the knockout in the 10th for a successful first defense. The winner by knockout at 1:59 of the 10th round, and still PBA Featherweight Champion...JUAN MANUEL MARQUEZ! |

One more title defense in this month (June), then rankings as of July 1, 2009. Will do rankings every three months. Champions must face the #1 once per 12 months or forfeit the belt.

So after building their careers, the 4-man Strawweight tournament will be...
1 vs 4, 2 vs 3, then the title match. Can the light-hitting Bustos continue his run? |

Strawweight Title Tournament Fights
#1 Eagle Den Janlaphan (12-0, 9 KO) vs #4 Muhammad Rachman (11-1, 4 KO) Den Janlaphan seems ready to make short work here as he drops Rachman less than a minute into the fight. He's unable to finish him there, though, and Rachman gets his feet back under him for slowed down rounds 2 and 3, which he's able to keep even. Things open up in the 4th as Rachman gets active, and the two engage in a slugfest round that Den Janlaphan marginally gets the better of. But Den Janlaphan puts Rachman down again in the 5th and seems comfortable once again. Rachman, sensing he better get going, dominates the 6th out of nowhere, and after an even 7th Rachman gets the better of a frenetic 8th round. Action stays hot in the 9th and 10th, both fairly even, before Rachman dominates the action in the 11th as Den Janlaphan seems secure and takes few risks. The 12th is a sleeper, bringing us to the cards...and a stunner. Though everyone in the house thought Den Janlaphan won it, two judges see it 113-113, meaning a majority draw. These two will have to meet again in the next few months. #2 Oleydong Sithsamerchai (12-1, 9 KO) vs #3 Isaac Bustos (10-0) The powerless Bustos hopes to work though Sithsamerchai's attacking pace. And it's Bustos who starts out strong, dictating the pace and striking with precision over the first two rounds. The pair turn to a brawl in the third as Sithsamerchai finds his way. That grows further in the fourth, where he dominates Bustos who's reduced to covering up and absorbing the damage. Bustos reasserts himself in the 5th and 6th before the pace slows over the 7th and 8th. Nobody seems hurt, as this has been a defense and precision-fest. Sithsamerchai dominates the 9th before an even 10th. With the fight so close, the anticipation was for a frenetic final two rounds. What resulted instead was a mutual fear of leaving themselves open, resulting in a paceless end to a solid, competitive fight. The cards...115-114 Bustos, 115-114 Sithamerchai...115-114 for the winner, advancing to the PBA Strawweight championship bout...OLEYDONG SITHSAMERCHAI!!! |

Strawweight Title Tournament Fights
#1 Eagle Den Janlaphan (12-0-1, 9 KO) vs #4 Muhammad Rachman (11-1-1, 4 KO) The rematch is the only one necessary out of the "Final Four" tournaments, so thanks Mr. Infinity for making me do this and getting the added drama ![]() Interestingly, this fight from an audience perspective looks closer than the first, which was called a draw despite 80% of the crowd feeling Den Janlaphan won comfortably. The difference here is Den Janlaphan controlling the final three rounds, which brought a resulting majority decision victory 115-113, 115-113, 114-114. Eagle Den Janlaphan moves on to face Oleydong Sithsamerchai for the title! |

STRAWWEIGHT TITLE FIGHT #1 Eagle Den Janlaphan (13-0-1, 9 KO) VS #2 Oleydong Sithsamerchai (13-1, 9 KO) A feeling out process for the first minute ends when Den Janlaphan doubles up on the hook nicely, sparking Sithsamerchai into action and a furious exchange in mid-ring. Den Janlaphan gets the better of it but gets careless in his pursuit, taking a glancing hook followed a powerful cross that puts him down late in the round. It was more about balance than pain and he's up quickly, but the knockdown costs him a round that was his. An even 2nd takes a turn two minutes in when the fighters clash heads in what is ultimately ruled an intentional butt from Sithsamerchai that splits Den Janlaphan right down the center of the right eyebrow. The doc says he can continue, but it's obviously giving him trouble. Sithsamerchai targets away and the gash is opened wider as a result. But the doc again says to go at it, and Den Janlaphan attacks, pummeling Sithsmaerchai in the final 30 seconds. Den Janlaphan's corner does brilliant work on the cut, and the third opens with him looking fresh and ready. Soon, he's landed a hard combination that opens a cut from Sithsamerchai on the inside of his right eyebrow, and blood flows again, though the cut seems minor. They measure each other for a while before a combination from Sithsamerchai draws blood from Den Janlaphan again, reopening the wound and the blood is a geyser all of a sudden. The doc checks it again this time waves it off. But the issue at hand is the cut being caused initially by the intentional butt. The ruling from the ref, though, is the punch caused the new damage, and as a result Sithsamerchai wins via TKO as Den Janlaphan's corner goes collectively apoplectic. The postfight interview is a demand for a rematch that goes, for now, unanswered. The winner and the PBA's first Strawweight champion, by TKO at 1:13 of round 3, OLEYDONG SITHSAMERCHAI!!! |

Scheduled Defenses For July 2009 Light-Heavyweight Champion Philadelphia Jack O'Brien (18-1, 7 KO) defends against #2 Gabriel Campillo (13-1, 4 KO) Middleweight Champion Winky Wright (14-0, 10 KO) defends against #1 contender Roman Karmazin (11-0, 11 KO) Featherweight Champion Juan Manuel Marquez (16-1-1, 12 KO) defends against #1 contender Young Corbett II (18-3, 11 KO) Note this will be the 4th time these two have fought. Marquez has won all three prior fights (TKO 4, SD 10, UD 12). Marquez apparently feels confident that he can take Corbett out again, thus giving him a year before he needs to face a #1 contender again. Jr. Featherweight Champion Celestino Caballero (14-0, 13 KO) vs #2 Joan Guzman (13-1, 13 KO) Strawweight Champion Oleydong Sithamerichai (14-1, 10) defends against #1 contender Jose Antonio Aguirre (13-1, 12 KO) |

Title Fight Recaps - July 2009 Light-Heavyweight Champion Philadelphia Jack O'Brien (18-1, 7 KO) defends against #2 Gabriel Campillo (13-1, 4 KO) After a tame first round the action picks up a bit. Campillo lets O'Brien know he's in for the fight in the second and O'Brien starts to get more accurate with his punches from there on, focusing well. Campillo suffers a cut in the third that gets progressively worse as the fight goes on before it's stopped in the 7th because of the cut. Campillo wasn't getting beat badly, but his corner was unable to handle the cut. Still, a quick stoppage that, had Campillo had more power and a better chance of a knockout, may not have happened. O'Brien up 58-56 on all cards at time of stoppage. Jr. Middleweight Champion Winky Wright (14-0, 10 KO) defends against #1 contender Roman Karmazin (11-0, 11 KO) Say this for Karmazin, he's a tough, tough guy. He gets absolutely picked apart by Wright here, his right eye is swollen virtually shut and Wright piles up five 20+ point rounds before the ref finally calls a halt to it at 2:44 of the 14th. Wright led 130-117, 129-118, 128-119 at the time of the stoppage. A virtuoso performance. Featherweight Champion Juan Manuel Marquez (16-1-1, 12 KO) defends against #1 contender Young Corbett II (18-3, 11 KO) Marquez has beaten Corbett three times before in all manners. But he'll need to beat him a fourth time down the line to get his title back. A see-saw, action-packed, foul-filled battle here sees Corbett get a questionable but not outlandish nod. He was far more accurate (42% vs 25%) while keeping the same rate. Marquez landed more power shots, and dropped Corbett in the 4th. But one judge gave Corbett 5 of the last 6 rounds (4 of which could have gone either way), and a butt from Corbett made Marquez's final 3 rounds very difficult. In the end, it's 144-141, 143-142, 142-142 for the NEW CHAMPION, by majority decision, YOUNG CORBETT II. Jr. Featherweight Champion Celestino Caballero (14-0, 13 KO) vs #2 Joan Guzman (13-1, 13 KO) Guzman in full control for the first 2 1/2 rounds. Walks right into an uppercut that rattles him, combination puts him down, show's over. Caballero defends successfully. Strawweight Champion Oleydong Sithsamerichai (14-1, 10) defends against #1 contender Jose Antonio Aguirre (13-1, 12 KO) Aguirre starts this fight strong, pursuing the champ doggedly and finding his spots while handling the ridiculous pace of Sithsamerichai. Aguirre leads through 6 before Sithsamerchai begins to get things together and Aguirre starts to seem worn down. Opening the 10th, both fighters are swollen, puffy messes and Aguirre somehow finds his second wind, dominating the 10th and 11th. A tentative 12th round changes on a dime at 2:40, when Sithsamerchai lands a hammer that puts Aguirre down and out, a well earned defense of his belt for Sithsamerchai, who now has a year before having to face a #1 contender again. |

Title Fights For August 2009
Light Heavyweight Philadelphia Jack O'Brien (19-1, 8 KO) vs #6 Silvio Branco (13-1, 7 KO) A dominating performance by O'Brien. Branco starts swelling badly in the fourth, which only gets worse. He's cut in the 6th, it's reopened in the 8th and after being pummeled throughout the 9th the ref stops it at 2:32 Welterweight Vernon Forrest (18-2, 12 KO) vs #1 Tommy Ryan (13-1, 11 KO) An absolute war. Forrest tries to stay outside, but Ryan is able to pick his spots while pressuring. To his credit though, Forrest gives as good as he gets when he needs to. Ryan drops Forrest in the 3rd, but Ryan tastes the canvas himself in the 8th. Back and forth with lots of action and many close rounds, including the final three during which both fighters posted double-digit points each round. Despite many close rounds, the judges agree on scoring of 14 out of 15. The only deviation is the 11th, a clear Ryan round one judge inexplicably gave to Forrest. It's no matter, though, as the other two judges scored the fight even, 142-142, bringing a majority draw. Forrest escapes with his title, but he likely hasn't escaped Ryan looking forward. Jr. Welterweight Ricky Hatton (14-2, 12 KO) vs #4 Junior Witter (13-3-2 10 KO) Bombs away! Both fighters are just blasting away, alternating rounds of control. Hatton is cut badly in the 4th, and it's made worse in the 6th. The ringside doc checks it and lets it continue, moments before Hatton - during a positively frenetic 6th round - eats an uppercut that leaves him flat on his back for the 10 count. JUNIOR WITTER IS THE NEW CHAMPION!!! Lightweight Benny Leonard (16-1, 9 KO) vs #2 Jose Luis Castillo (14-1-1, 12 KO) Castillo has looked impressive, which makes what Leonard did to him all the more impressive. A thoroughly dominating effort by Leonard, who puts Castillo down twice in the 7th before the bout is stopped when he fails to defend himself. Jr. Featherweight Celestino Caballero (15-0, 14 KO) vs #3 Bones Adams (17-4, 10 KO) Less than 30 seconds into the fight, Adams is down, courtesy of a booming right hook from Caballero. And so it goes, with Caballero pitching a dominating shutout through 6 rounds. Adams dominates in the 7th, but Caballero doesn't seem to be in trouble. He is in trouble though in the 8th when Adams misses wildly with a left, but not with the right, that puts Caballero down on his back. He's up at 7, and with a minute left in the round Adams pours it on. When Caballero doesn't respond, the ref ends it, making Bones Adams the shocking new Jr. Featherweight Champion! Jr. Bantamweight Luis Alberto Perez (16-1, 16 KO) vs #2 Alexander Munoz (14-2, 14 KO) The first round is measured and even. The second is not...Perez blasts Munoz, dropping him a little more than a minute in, and pursues aggressively in hammering him before the fight is stopped at 2:54 of the 2nd. A dominating defense by Perez. Jr. Flyweight Ulises Solis (22-1 18 KO) vs #5 Roberto Vazquez (9-1, 9 KO) Repeat, except instead of a TKO it's a flat knockout in the 2nd, as Vazquez rises after one knockdown, but not after the second. |

Title Fights September 2009
Heavyweight Jack Dempsey (15-1, 15 KO) vs #11 John L. Sullivan (18-4, 17 KO) Dempsey took this fight assuming Sullivan, whose ability nobody questions, would continue to struggle. He's lost 4 fights - 2 by DQ, one on cuts and one a knockout loss to James Jeffries, who will break the top 10 when the new rankings come out Oct. 1 as he's accumulated the necessary 10 bouts. They say something about assuming...Dempsey starts well as Sullivan seems to have a hard time finding his bearings over the first two rounds. But eventually he gets to force Dempsey to open it up. Sullivan pummels Dempsey in the third, but Dempsey comes back strong in the 4th - until Sullivan puts him down in the waning moments. Dempsey rises but isn't the same for the rest of the fight. Sullivan controls the pace from there, forcing Dempsey into a slugfest. The crowd is on its feet for much of the rest of the bout, an action-packed war with lots of heavy artillery. But Sullivan has a dominating round in the 8th, and a bit more than a minute into the 9th, a wobbly Dempsey hits the mat after a barrage of blows from Sullivan and is unable to rise in time. The winner, and NEW WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION...JOHN L. SULLIVAN!!! Flyweight Omar Narvaez (13-2, 8 KO) vs #10 Randolph Plantz (8-4-3, 2 KO) Plantz (a stiff who has benefited by an inactive division to crack the top 10) gets the chance of a lifetime here. Narvaez is asleep in round one and Plantz looks well. That changes quickly, as Narvaez decides not to play with him and at 1:38 of the 4th, Plantz is knocked cold as Narvaez retains. |

Going to start recapping not just the title fights, but any fight between two guys in the top 10, just to give a better idea how more of the top guys are doing and add a little depth.

Highlighted Top 10 Fights - October 2009
Middleweight #2 Stanley Ketchel (10-0, 8 KO) vs #6 Charles McCoy (10-2-1, 8 KO) Ketchel broke into the Top 10 after reaching his qualifying 10th fight last month. He moves up in class here, and promptly dominates Charles McCoy, dropping him 4 times en route to a unanimous decision win (99-88, 98-88, 98-87) Jr. Middleweight #3 Joachim Alcine (9-1, 9 KO) vs #6 Santiago Samaniego (13-5, 13 KO) Samaniego dominates early and is in control until Alcine drops him in the 5th. Alcine has a good 6th as well but Samaniego retakes control and, after having knocked Alcine down earlier in the fight, drops him again in the 8th before turning his lights out completely in the 9th. Welterweight #8 Mike Glover (8-4, 2 KO) vs #1 Tommy Ryan (14-1-1, 12 KO) Coming off his frustrating draw in his title shot versus Vernon Forrest, Ryan looks to hammer a contender before hopefully getting another crack at the strap. Glover has other ideas, though, and frustrates Ryan in winning the first three rounds. Ryan starts to attack, but can never really find his momentum until a 9th round that shocks everyone when Glover gives as good as he gets once the action heats up. In the end, Ryan is ahead on one card...but the other two are even, a majority draw for the second straight bout, only this time a much lesser opponent. Jr. Lightweight #7 Edwin Valero (11-2, 11 KO) vs #1 Yodsanan Nanthachai (12-2, 10 KO) Nanthachai, hoping for a title shot against Joel Casamayor, looks strong here as he dominates Valero early, dropping him in the second and again in the 4th. Valero is swollen and cut by the end of the fifth, which makes it all the more unexpected when he blasts Nanthachai with an uppercut in the 6th that knocks him down for the count. A huge upset win for Valero and a fight that, at least for the near future, will keep Nanthachai from being the mandatory. Nanthachai was up 50-43 (x2), 49-44 at the time of the knockout. Light-Heavyweight #5 Zsolt Erdai (16-5, 5 KO) vs #4 Mehdi Sahnoune (13-4, 12 KO) Sahnoune is gashed above the eye in the opening 30 seconds, and by the end of the round the wound is one you could drive a truck through. The corner doesn't even get a chance to stop it as the ringside doc orders a halt and Sahnoune is taken to the hospital for some work. Bantamweight #9 Hozumi Hasegawa (10-1, 2 KO) vs #4 Wladimir Sidorenko (16-3, 2 KO) Hasegawa lands 45 percent of his blows as he carves Sidorenko up...literally. A pair of cuts over and outside his right eye are managed for a bit but eventually make him a human target, forcing a stoppage at 1:40 of the 7th. Hasegawa led 60-54 (x2), 58-56 at the time of the stoppage. |
